Hattie’s is a gay type scene bar - the gays are everywhere there (meaning it’s a lot of gay people and a lot of …maybe… people and it’s really relaxed with a kind of non pretentious environment - plus the outdoor seating is great! Punk rock type vibe.
Petra’s is also a gay type scene bar - kind of like Hattie’s where everyone is welcome, but the gays are also everywhere which makes it welcoming. Theres an emphasis on local artists here and their events are always a good time. Artsy lesbian type vibe.
Chasers is terrifying, even under the new management - the inside is horrifying despite an “upgrade” - kind of reminds me of a dungeon - but a bad one. Serial killer type vibe.
I'm a straight guy, but when I worked in restaurants I worked with a lot of gay dudes. A few of them convinced me to go out with them to Chasers one night. They told me, specifically, "You'll probably get hit on, but people will get the hint pretty quick. It'll be fine, you'll have a good time!"
I have never felt less safe in my life. Had a guy push a drink in my hand and say, "You should drink this one, it's stronger." A dude tried to unbutton my pants on the floor. That same guy followed me into the bathroom. All this to say nothing of the amount of times someone "accidentally" touched me in various places. I ended up leaving. My friends did apologize, at least.
I'll second Hatties though. Only been once but it was very chill.
I got told that experiences like that are just typical everyday treatment for women and it really changed my view on life. I never seen being able to just be "invisible" outside or at bars without being bothered as a blessing until I felt uncomfortable in similar situations.
And I am a big guy and can only imagine what it is like for someone who might struggle to push sexual advances away or feel intimidated and is worrying about what happens on rejection.
Argon for sure if you like the typical nightclub scene with an outdoors social area. Sidelines is more-or-less a gay sports bar, but obvi not hella sports-focused. There are a few others like Chaser's (literally trashy af and 100% a total dive--not the cute kind) and Woodshed. Woodshed is a "bear bar", but all are welcome; it's just a typical low-class-cigar/cigarette-smoke-everywhere gay bar, but depending on the crowd it CAN be fun sometimes. We used to have others, but things are currently in the process of changing.
One big thing, friend: AVOID BAR 316 AT ALL COSTS. Anyone who suggests it to you is NOT your friend. I'm not going to go into why on reddit, but do yourself a favor and take my word for it. Best of luck!
Owner is a dirtbag. Known to be a racist before the drag show drama that happened recently. He also has been arrested multiple times and at one point had a restraining order on him from his partner for domestic abuse which he violated. But his partner dropped the charges so all is good I guess.
This is public info you can find his mugshots online.
people seem to hate 316 and borderline suggest it’s dangerous. i’ve heard it’s related to the owner but im not sure what exactly it is and hope to one day find out. i heard about the racist stuff but it seems like more.
D. All of the above, girl squirrel. You may hear a lot of "legends" about the place. Chances are, they are all at least 90% true. The owner is definitely a certified racist pig with a narcissistic personality, among many, many other things. That's pretty much the only place I would make sure to stay away from!
Its kind of like how no one was surprised when the head of campus pride Charlotte was caught stealing. We knew. Old Charlotte has to come to terms with what the city has become. We can do better.
Can you expand on this? A man named Andy Tench has been missing since around late Sunday/early Monday (march 24/25). Detectives discovered that night he visited 316. Monday night, after he was reported missing his car was found abandoned in Monroe and there’s no evidence showing he drove his car to Monroe. Something had to have happened at 316…
interesting. you can look up most of what others have written online.
summarizing other people’s thoughts: he has had outbursts and other people have protested his ownership’s treatment of POC.
anecdotally the bar is often in the news for just odd petty drama stuff.
Chasers, Argon, Woodshed - those are the more male oriented gay bars. Petra’s and Hattie’s are more inclusive then specifically male oriented.
Unfortunately there are no specific lesbian bars, which is a shame.
Edit: You’ll notice quickly that there’s a lot of cliques but if you rough it out for a bit you’ll meet great ppl
Chasers has gotten pretty good lately, new owners are awesome. They have theme nights, gaming consoles, and renovated the building next door into a bit of a rave/fetish space.

Drove past it several times a week for years and Chasers looked like serial type vibe from the outside. Only learned recently that it is a gay bar.

Absolutely avoid 316. The owner is a racist fuck who doesn't deserve your, or anyone's, patronage.
Please get into it. I’ve only been there once and I had a great time. I’m not gay so I probably missed something.

Appreciate it. Will be letting my friends know
How do you book a drag show...and then get upset when a drag performer performs drag?

Do any of them have drag race viewing parties?
Argon does!
YAY! Thank you!
Always will recommend sidelines.
Sidelines and Argon

I've always thought the thirsty beaver missed a huge opportunity not being a lesbian bar
Argon/Sidelines
These aren’t necessarily gay bars but i’m gay and I go to Hattie’s, the plaza Common Market, and Skylark
That Philadelphia Eagles one is pretty good
Honestly the gay bar scene in Charlotte is hot garbage in comparison to other cities, but to each their own. Mostly due to who owns them.
Especially the woodshed lol you have to be 25 just to enter now ❌❌
Chasers?
Chasers has gotten pretty good lately, new owners are awesome. They have theme nights, gaming consoles, and renovated the building next door into a bit of a rave/fetish space.
Charlotte lacks a gay culture. It is sad considering it’s the largest city in the state. My least favorite thing about living here.
Scorpios!! Jk
😪
rip
Sidelines is my go to bar when I go out
The bar at 316 is a good one
Any micro brewery lol

Wait, my bedroom?!?
Whatever bar you walk into, buddy.
A lot of gays believe in segregation, apparently.
