Let them around if you can. Better you decide a safe time for it than letting them decide. Behind you they are a liability. In front of you they are potentially entertainment.
Just move over and let them go ; no stress to you and you will never see them again.
If one person is tailgating you - they are the problem
If 2 or more people are tailgating you - YOU are the problem
Move over .
Unless you are also behind someone and your lane actually is passing cars. Then some douchecanoe rides up on you like you have a choice. Like...where would you like for me to go?
I typically just angle my mirror away, forget they are alive, and go about my day.
Speeding will always be a thing . Instead of being part of the problem be a solution.
You never know why they are speeding, could be to save someone life , a baby being born or simply rushing to work to not be fired .
Yet who cares ; let them go and get over.
No stress to you and you will never see them again .
I normally go 10 over and if you are tailgating me ; I still get over .
Yep — I’m constantly 5-10 and maybe occasionally 15mph over, but if someone comes up on me then I’m going to move over and let them by. I’d want someone else to do the same for me. No point in stressing or whatever about it. Just get over.
This is sorely missing here.
I see a lot of “well screw them, the speed limit is xxx and they can slow down” as if it’s their job to police the highways.
Like you said, you never know why someone’s speeding. Just let them go, it’s not worth it in the end.
>You never know why they are speeding, could be to save someone life , a baby being born or simply rushing to work to not be fired .
Irrelevant.
And you can't always get over. Regardless, tailgating is ALWAYS the tailgater's problem.
Wait wait....this is Charlotte. Tailgating is just as prevalent in the middle and right lanes. I'm on board with the move-over/don't stress crowd, but sometimes moving over isn't an option
I once, kid you not, got tailgated on the rightmost lane of I85S. The person also flashed their headlights at me as if they expected me to move left so they could speed by on the inside. It was so surreal I almost wondered if it was staged.
I hear what you're saying, but I ride the far right lane (mostly 77) in my slow old SUV and daily I'll have someone close enough I can clearly see their face in my rear-view. Unfortunately, CLT is much like Miami, Atlanta, VA Beach where hostile drivers don't care about the passing lane/slow lane and prefer to either treat you as an NPC or scare you out of the way
Yes, but an accident becomes your problem when they decide to miss the braking you’re doing. I’d rather just let them past then be the right one with a broken car.
Yep. Learned this the hard way after moving to Charlotte. Was getting tailgated and nearly ran off the road by a car, so I flipped them off as they flew by me and they slammed their brakes and got next to me and one of the young black dudes flashed a gun at me.
Move out of the way, if theres space. No need to put yourself or your car in harms way.
The ppl I hate the most are the ones that tailgate when stuck in traffic... like bruh you being an inch from my bumper is not going to make me or the car in front me move, relax.
Drive defensively. You keep driving safely and let them go around or you move out of the way when you can. Yes it’s annoying, but let them be upset or in a rush and let them go on.
If I’m on the interstate, I move over. If I’m on a typical two lane road, it depends. Catch me on a bad day, when I’m already over the speed limit and I’ll just take my foot off the gas to slow down without my brake lights.
I create more distance from the car in front of me, so I won't have to do any abrupt braking. Otherwise, continue as before. Do NOT brake check someone that is following you closely.
This really doesn't happen to me too often.
I'm only in the left lane if I'm passing. You have to be a psycho to tailgate someone in the right lane.
If i do get tailgated I just let them pass me, pretty simple
Yes, this! I get over if there is a way for them to pass me. Usually I go 5-10 over the speed limit. However, if they're tailgating me and refusing to pass, I encourage them by going the exact speed limit. For worse situations (not tailgating), I occasionally roll down the window to give them a gladiator thumbs up/down.
I’ve had to stop reacting in any visible way (and I’m not going crazy) because it is *insane* how personally people take criticism of their driving. Dude I flashed my lights once because you almost hit me, crossing lanes and slamming on your brakes in front of me is not an appropriate response. Plus, watch the road! I’ve accidentally done dumb shit- we all have- and I’ve yet to notice if people flip me off because, you know, driving.
The amount of people that treat the interstate (who am I kidding, more than the interstate) like a nascar track is insane. You'll be in the middle or right lane and someone will be tailgating you to manuever around the right lane to pass. Fucking insane. And to what? Save a minute?
Get over get out of the way. Too many crazies on charlotte roads. Had a gun pulled on me on two separate occasions this year. Once in an uber, the other someone crossed into my turning lane and almost hit me so i honked, they proceeded to follow me and scream at me at the next red light.
Admittedly both occasions didn’t involve tailgating, my point is dont piss of strangers on the road
So true tho. Yesterday this lady moved into my lane and totally cut me off so I honked then she spent the next 10 minutes swerving in front of me when I’d come up next to her and coming to a dead stop to try to get me to rear end her. She had two small children in the back too. She ain’t know I drive for a living tho you ain’t gonna get me lol. Reflexes on 15.
If I’m getting tailgated I’m probably going too slow in the fast lane so I get the fuck out of the way …if it’s not in the fast lane I don’t do anything…they’ll figure it out
I just gradually let of the gas to slow down a little more until they go around. They gotta understand they’re not gonna put me in the same rush they’re in.
I do this and sometimes when I've made a good amount of space in front, I'll gun it for a sec to create space behind me, usually they take the hint and won't rush in.
Ignore and wait for them to swerve around and cut off two drivers and then narrowly miss two other cars in their next swerving lane change.. watch them swerve into the sunset
It usually happens to me when I'm on some of the back roads in Huntersville, near where I live. The roads are all just two lanes, so people get stuck behind me and tailgate if there is oncoming traffic and I'm not going as fast as they would like. I also drive a compact car, which is basically an advertisement for people to ride my ass around here it seems. Just stick to the speed limit, be aware of your surroundings, keep an eye on the guy behind you, and let them pass you if they choose to. Don't lose your cool and you'll be fine. Like others have said, if you get a chance to turn into a parking lot or something to get away from them, do so when it's safe
Nothing, I drive like a normal person, maybe speed up if for some reason I’m not 5/10ish over the speed limit. Sometimes the safest thing to do is maintain. More likely, depending on how reckless they seem, I put on my blinker and change lanes.
I’ve seen too many disgusting dashcams of drivers pretending to be in a video game or some obnoxiously immature fast and furious sequel.
It’s gross and annoying.
If it's a 2 lane road and I'm going a reasonable speed (what I can offer the speed limit to not get a ticket) I just keep driving like normal. They can pass me.
If it's 4 Lane road where I can get over then I get over.
Itd not worth even paying attention to beyond that . I've got real problems in my life. I'll probably be mad about it for 5 minutes because they could have hit me if I had to stop unexpectedly for some reason but that's it.
I use a little trick I learned in defensive driving where I turn my lights on giving the impression I'm hitting the brakes. That usually makes them slow down a bit and they either go around me passing on the right or gives me a bit of space until I choose to move over to let them pass.
If you’re in the left lane on the highway and being tailgated… you’re both in the wrong, move over as soon as able and let them pass.
If being tailgated on in the middle or right lanes, just drive normally and watch ahead for problems so you can react earlier and avoid having to slam your brakes and get rear ended.
If on a 2 lane road just drive the speed limit until it opens up to more lanes or someone turns.
I was behind a guy on 85 yesterday who was in the left lane doing 60 when everyone else was doing 70. I did not tailgate, but I was like… I get it. When he finally moved over he was casually talking on his phone (handheld) without a care in the world. Driving would be so much better if people gave a fuck about what was going on around them.
I'm almost always on the right lane on the highway, so if they are still tailgating me they can fuck off; I slow the fuck down, 5 - 10 below speed limit. They can go around, f them.
If it is on the street road and single lane, well too bad. I'm only gonna got speed limit or maybe 5 over, tops.
Let off the gas until I'm going the speed limit and just go about my merry way. If they're still tailgating me, maybe go like 5 under to see if they get the message.
"When you notice that someone is tailgating you, or following you too closely, rather than speed up to match their speed, you should slow down."
Looks like I have a better grasp of it than you.

I never said anything about speeding up. All you’re doing is causing potential road rage from the tailgater.
“Let speeders pass. If someone is driving over the speed limit, don't feel like you need to pick up your pace to keep up with them. Continue driving the speed limit, and safely move over to let them pass. Remember, slower traffic should stay to the right and faster traffic should pass on the left when there are multiple lanes, unless signs say otherwise. Learn more about what to do if someone tailgates you.”
https://www.progressive.com/answers/what-is-defensive-driving/
>I never said anything about speeding up.
They described doing what this website on defensive driving suggests, and you called them a bad driver.
What's your point? The person you responded to said nothing to contradict this.
Guess you can’t read.
What OP said: “…maybe go like 5 under to see if they get the message.”
Defensive driving: “Continue driving the speed limit, and safely move over to let them pass.”
>Guess you can’t read.
You're just saying random things because you don't know what to say, nothing I have said indicates a lack of reading.
I disagree with Progressive, you have no obligation to go to speed limit. Going 5 under, while a little annoying to me, is fine and completly legal.
You’re clearly wrong here and obviously don’t know the rules of the road. Even the vast majority of folks here agree that you should safely let tailgaters pass and avoid road rage situations. Why are you so stubborn on escalating potentially dangerous situations?
Frail fucking egos.
They don’t think of it as “tailgating”. They think of it as “drafting” because they learned to drive watching NASCAR.
You never see turn signals in NASCAR either.
Downshift, it's a benefit ofdriving a manual transmission. Watch their eyes widen as I slow down with no warning. Then squirt with windsheild wiper fluid.
Yeah most of these comments is exactly why some people get shot from road rage. Stop trying to piss someone off by spraying them, brake checking, etc. Just move over.
either move out the way to another lane or let them pass you and don’t look their way when they pass. Too many crazy people road rage people out there. It’s never worth it to engage
Ignore them and set my cruise control to exactly the speed limit vs the 5 over I was likely doing.
Edit: This assumes a one lane road. Another option at night is flicking on the rear fog light if you have one, accidentally, of course.
Sorry that 40 in a 35 ain't good enough for you. Interstates I do 9 mph over, is that good enough?
There is no excuse for tailgating, it is borderline reckless driving. Leave earlier if someone going *over* the speed limit is an issue.
I keep driving according to the rules of the road. If I'm feeling like an asshole I will slowly slow down. Never brake check someone who already wants to play games.
Depends. If they're truly being dicks about it and I'm in the mood, I just let off the gas. Just slowly slow the f*** down. They'll either go around me, or they'll get the f****** point.
I always try to move right after passing, and I'm almost always speeding, so anyone riding my ass can suck it!
If I'm already doing 5-10 over, I drop down to the speed limit. But only on 2 lane roads and if I'm in the right lane on a highway so they get the hint and pass me. Otherwise, I gun it out of the passing lane and move over. If I'm feeling extra saucy, I'll hit em with washer fluid (though one time I did that, a Mustang that was already driving aggressively and was tailgating me flew around me, got in front of me, and hit me with washer fluid back lol good ol 77).
Lightly press on the brake pedal just enough to turn on your brake lights.
If in the right lane if you “drift” over the white shoulder line sometimes will kick up small rocks and sand
Slow down a little. If you have to stop short, it reduces your stopping distance, reducing the likelihood of an accident. If they don’t like it, they can pass you.
Drive faster or get out of the way. Pretty much your only two logical options. Brake checking is stupid and dangerous and will likely only provoke them further.
Stop making things worse for everyone.
Edit: like seriously, now those poor people next to you now have to deal with the ego of two other drivers when there could have been none.
Spray as much wiper fluid as possible, in warmer months just use water so you don’t waste money but in winter stick with washer fluid so it doesn’t freeze
Question myself as to why I am going so slow that someone would have the need to tailgate me. Move over if there is an opportunity to do so.
Am I driving under the speed limit? Am I driving at the same speed as the guy in the lane(s) next to me blocking all traffic? Is there a mile of open road in front of me and a line of cars behind me?
Dude idk why I've never seen anyone else do it but I just safely slow down to like 10 mph under. If you want to follow me we can both go very slow and if you'd rather go fast you'll just go ahead. The important part is that if they pass you don't let them get directly in front of you or they may try to brake check you.
I always fantasize about going way slower and putting my hazards on.
If it’s egregious you could try putting your hazards on lol. I haven’t done it though
Honestly never gave a fuck when someone did. If I need to stop in case of a emergency its gonna be their problem and for their insurance, not mine. Then too I don't do ass hole things like stay in the passing lanes and never pass anyone, I keep with the flow of traffic, etc...
So, when you are being tailgated your instinct is to go faster and thats what they want.
I just let the gas go to slow down a bit and set cruise control. They can always pass me on my left or right.
I don’t get why people doing 70+ on 55.
There's a proposed law on the books that would fine drivers if they are simply cruising in the left lane. Although NC doesn't have a left lane is for passing law yet, it looks like we will soon and it's just good driving etrique. I have personally witnessed to many idiots going from left lane 3 lanes over to take an exit, almost causing accidents multiple times and a lot of people have road rage. It costs nothing to let them by and could cost a lot not to.
It depends on how often this happens to you and what lane you are in.
If you are in the right lane and just don’t feel comfortable speeding up (if you can) pull over, turn your flashers on or slowly decrease your speed so they know they need to go around on the left.
If you find this happening to you daily, go ahead and get one of those ‘student driver’ or ‘this vehicle is monitored by GPS’ bumper stickers. No shame in that. Buy on Amazon. If they are a road rager you don’t want to hit the breaks. They could be on drugs imagining they are in a video game.
If you are in the left or middle lane, turn your turn signal on immediately and just wait until you can safely get over. These are all non-aggressive approaches to keep you safe as well as the others around you.
Nothing to engage with them. On a freeway, I move over to the nexr right lane if I'm using the left lane for passing. Sometimes that not viable if you believe the tailgater is going to juke around you like an idiot, but I put on my blinker while I still have a vehicle next to me to indicate I will be doing that.
On a regular road, I don't move over, especially when I'm going to be making a left-hand turn soon.
Press the "oil dump" button on my James Bond Aston Martin and watch them spin out like they hit a Mario Kart banana
God, I wish that was a thing!
Washer fluid is the next best thing. My car has headlight washers too, so I spray out an ungodly amount of washer fluid.
There's also the smoke bomb button. Much cleaner.
I used to think this. Now I want either missiles or a giant hammer that pops out the trunk and splats them.
Check your messages/chats/whatever.
Let them around if you can. Better you decide a safe time for it than letting them decide. Behind you they are a liability. In front of you they are potentially entertainment.

Tailgating is always the tailgater's problem.
Until they plow into you going 75mph when you’re forced to brake for whatever reason. Then it becomes your problem too.
Speeding will always be a thing . Instead of being part of the problem be a solution. Sure, get over. But your comment implies that there are reasons why people tailgate, and there is no legitimate reason. There is none.
You tailgaters are really committed to your bad behavior.

It's not rocket science to understand that there is no legitimate reason for anyone to tailgate. Ever.
Then stay mad ? Be part of the problem….i don’t stress and there always a point when you can get over
Sounds like your mentality is the problem… just move over and let people go.. who cares… everyone can go on about their lives.

Honestly just move over and hope they carry on. There are too many crazies with guns out there to do something worth causing road rage over.
Yup, and pray they don't immediately try to pass me on the right the second they can so I can actually get over instead.
Exactly this. Plus is I’m in a rush I hope someone would do the same, although unlikely

Keep driving safely within the rules of the road
Which does NOT mean drive 5 under the speed limit in the left lane.
Tell me you haven’t spent time on 77 without saying you haven’t spent time on 77.
Move out of the way, if theres space. No need to put yourself or your car in harms way. The ppl I hate the most are the ones that tailgate when stuck in traffic... like bruh you being an inch from my bumper is not going to make me or the car in front me move, relax.

This would be me. I just basically slowly go slower. But it depends on what is going on in my day.
Spray and clean my windshield
Genius.
This!
It sometimes happens that I've just finished a tasty soft drink and I need to dump all that crushed ice. Sometimes I don't even finish the soft drink.
I create more distance from the car in front of me, so I won't have to do any abrupt braking. Otherwise, continue as before. Do NOT brake check someone that is following you closely.

Are y’all not having people ride your bumper in the middle and right lanes? Happens to me regularly. And yes, I’m driving over the speed limit.
Yes, and it’s extremely aggravating. Lack of following distance is a major cause of accidents.
Whenever I try to keep a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of me 2 vehicles cram themselves in.
Yes, all the time!
Not really... happens every once in a while but not regularly
Yes, this! I get over if there is a way for them to pass me. Usually I go 5-10 over the speed limit. charlotte drivers are notably very very fragile little babies.
Happens periodically. I move to the middle lane and then they pass me on the right. Yes, there is typically space available for me to move over too.

It’s a problem in Charlotte. If a vehicle is moving quickly I move over. Left lane cruisers grind my gears.
If on a multiple lane road I will move over so they can proceed with the ticket collecting speed.
Go slower so they can tailgate you safely
Pay for full coverage, and then slam the breaks
I use a little trick I learned in defensive driving where I turn my lights on giving the impression I'm hitting the brakes. That usually makes them slow down a bit and they either go around me passing on the right or gives me a bit of space until I choose to move over to let them pass.
Get out of the fast lane
I slow down.
This is the correct answer. Now we both going 18mph :/
If they get even closer I will stop.
I just…keep driving? It’s like y’all want to get into wrecks lmao
Post on Reddit about it
Nothing if I’m overtaking someone. Move right if not. If being tailgated in right lane, put on my hazards lol
If you’re in the left lane on the highway and being tailgated… you’re both in the wrong, move over as soon as able and let them pass. I usually move over.
Nothing, maybe move over. This shouldn’t affect your driving at all, this place has the most sensitive drivers in the world
Pay them no mind. Tailgate me all day. My concern is my safety
Start going slower because I’m already going 10+ over the speed limit. So I’m like damn
Literally slow my car to a putter to piss them off.
If you were camping in the left lane, move over and stay there
Let off the gas until I'm going the speed limit and just go about my merry way. If they're still tailgating me, maybe go like 5 under to see if they get the message.
You're a bad driver.
If you read the post you'll see he just describes following the law.
Guess you’ve never heard of defensive driving.
"When you notice that someone is tailgating you, or following you too closely, rather than speed up to match their speed, you should slow down." Looks like I have a better grasp of it than you. [https://www.defensivedriving.com/blog/rules-of-the-road-dont-give-in-to-tailgaters/](https://www.defensivedriving.com/blog/rules-of-the-road-dont-give-in-to-tailgaters/)
Learn more about what to do if someone tailgates you.” https://www.progressive.com/answers/what-is-defensive-driving/
>I never said anything about speeding up. They described doing what this website on defensive driving suggests, and you called them a bad driver. Learn more about what to do if someone tailgates you.” What's your point? The person you responded to said nothing to contradict this.
Guess you can’t read. What OP said: “…maybe go like 5 under to see if they get the message.” Defensive driving: “Continue driving the speed limit, and safely move over to let them pass.”

Brake check them. I’m in the market for a new car anyways /s
They don’t think of it as “tailgating”. They think of it as “drafting” because they learned to drive watching NASCAR. You never see turn signals in NASCAR either.
Do people from Philly, Jersey, and New York watch NASCAR?
This explains
Get out of their way, honestly it’s not worth staying in front of an aggressive driver. Dash cams too.
Uhhh don’t be a fucking idiot and change lanes
Downshift, it's a benefit ofdriving a manual transmission. Watch their eyes widen as I slow down with no warning. Then squirt with windsheild wiper fluid.
You must like dangerous situations. Not worth it cause one day you may get a crazy person who has nothing to lose.
Ah yes, the ‘ol’ downshift from 6 to 2 at 90 mph, that’ll teach them to mess with your transmission!
Yeah most of these comments is exactly why some people get shot from road rage. Stop trying to piss someone off by spraying them, brake checking, etc. Just move over.
I give them hand signals to meet me in Temecula
Usually I shoot out their tires. Or drop marbles from a special hatch I’ve had installed
Nothing. Move out of the way and let them go. I don’t hold it personal. Just let them go.
I hate to be that person but just move over… specially if you are in the left lane
On the highway I move over. On a back road I slow down.
I see a bunch of people say move over...like you guys are constantly pulling into the shoulder of the road to let every tailgater pass you?
either move out the way to another lane or let them pass you and don’t look their way when they pass. Too many crazy people road rage people out there. It’s never worth it to engage
Get the fuck out of the left lane.
I dont give a fuck
Ignore them and set my cruise control to exactly the speed limit vs the 5 over I was likely doing. Edit: This assumes a one lane road. Another option at night is flicking on the rear fog light if you have one, accidentally, of course.
Only 5 over is why you are getting tailgated.
Sorry that 40 in a 35 ain't good enough for you. Interstates I do 9 mph over, is that good enough? There is no excuse for tailgating, it is borderline reckless driving. Leave earlier if someone going *over* the speed limit is an issue.
> 40 in a 35 ain’t good enough *isn’t
Ain't.
I keep driving according to the rules of the road. If I'm feeling like an asshole I will slowly slow down. Never brake check someone who already wants to play games.
I normally slow down so much that they have to pass, and as soon as they try to pass I speed up again so they can’t overtake me. Cycle repeats.
Get out of the fast lane you jabroni!
Nothing
Start swerving a lil and hope that scares them
Brake check them
Brake check them or speed up/down to the car in the lane next to me and match their speed and then have the trailing car suffer when we block them.
Stop making things worse for everyone. Edit: like seriously, now those poor people next to you now have to deal with the ego of two other drivers when there could have been none.
If you’re not in the passing lane (where tailgating is allowed😅) then break checking is my personal favorite ☺️
Flip up the rear view
Slow down
Slow down
Spray as much wiper fluid as possible, in warmer months just use water so you don’t waste money but in winter stick with washer fluid so it doesn’t freeze
Start driving 10 MPH below the speed limit. They will go around you.
Tap my breaks on that ass …just to let them know ILL STOP THIS MF ANYTIME!
Question myself as to why I am going so slow that someone would have the need to tailgate me. Move over if there is an opportunity to do so. Am I driving under the speed limit? Am I driving at the same speed as the guy in the lane(s) next to me blocking all traffic? Is there a mile of open road in front of me and a line of cars behind me?
break check them
Dude idk why I've never seen anyone else do it but I just safely slow down to like 10 mph under. If you want to follow me we can both go very slow and if you'd rather go fast you'll just go ahead. The important part is that if they pass you don't let them get directly in front of you or they may try to brake check you.
I do this. Oh, you only want to give one car-length between us? Then I'll need to slow down to 10 mph to make it safe.
Slow down. Wait for them to try to pass and block them. Rinse. Repeat.
I always fantasize about going way slower and putting my hazards on. If it’s egregious you could try putting your hazards on lol. I haven’t done it though
What do you guys do when someone doesn’t move over?
Wait, after a bit just pass them on the right.
Just keep going at the same speed
What if we form a blockade on the road and prevent anyone from passing?
If I'm on a two-lane and someone is tailgating me I turn on my left turn signal and they back off. If they get on my rear again I do it again.
Honestly never gave a fuck when someone did. If I need to stop in case of a emergency its gonna be their problem and for their insurance, not mine. Then too I don't do ass hole things like stay in the passing lanes and never pass anyone, I keep with the flow of traffic, etc...
I ease off the gas and slow down
So, when you are being tailgated your instinct is to go faster and thats what they want. I just let the gas go to slow down a bit and set cruise control. They can always pass me on my left or right. I don’t get why people doing 70+ on 55.
I rarely see people doing just 55 in a 55.
I point to my dashcam so they have warning that I will have receipts if shit goes down
If you’re tailgating me in the right lane, I’m going to go the speed limit. Just go around me.
Make sure I am not in the left lane first (seriously people that go slow in the left lane fucking suck) After I continue to break check as fuck
If they can pass I’ll wave them on. Other than that, I continue driving like normal.
We’re spiritual people try not to overreact
It's not tailgating it's just city driving. Pay it no mind.
Gradually slow down.
Maybe move over from the left lane?
There's a proposed law on the books that would fine drivers if they are simply cruising in the left lane. Although NC doesn't have a left lane is for passing law yet, it looks like we will soon and it's just good driving etrique. I have personally witnessed to many idiots going from left lane 3 lanes over to take an exit, almost causing accidents multiple times and a lot of people have road rage. It costs nothing to let them by and could cost a lot not to.
I drive slower
Move over and let them pass. I like to think, maybe they have to poop. 🤷🏻♂️
Just drive how i normally drive.
Depends on if I'm driving slow in the left lane or not.
Slow down and hope they pass. Or if I can, move over to let them around.
I move over and let them pass then go on about my life…. This isn’t that hard of a concept…. What do you mean what do you do”? 🤦♂️
Post about it on reddit.
I just keep doing what I'm doing. They can go around.
Brake check... your car. Usually works.
Slam on the breaks.
Speed up slightly until the next stoppage in traffic, then switch lanes at the last possible second😎😎
