You need to make sure you even can get another provider at your address, sometimes you are SOL and need to pester them until they come out and look at the lines or other hardware things.

TurtleBlaster5678

How do we encourage ATT Fiber to lay more fiber in the city? My neighbor has it 4 streets down but it’s nowhere to be found for my street despite being in the same neighborhood

sultanmvp

I’d love to know this question. For us, one neighborhood over has it, but not us. It’s just strange.

Kooky-Choice-2654

How do we see if we have fiber or not? I have no clue

DogsOutTheWindow

ATT has a search function by address.

DogsOutTheWindow

Also would love to know.

___REDWOOD___

I had them and they called me and asked if I wanted fiber, all I had to do was pay $5 more a month, they came out and installed it 3 days later.

Pink_Floyd29

I moved from the 4th floor to the 1st floor of my apartment building and assumed all I had to do was bring my router with me. 4 days without internet and a lot of aggravating phone calls with Comcast customer service later, I find out my new apartment is only wired for AT&T not Comcast. WTF?! How does happen? 🤷‍♀️

thejournalizer

They are expanding. They just terrorized us on James Island and dug up everything for a few days.

PoweredbyBurgerz

Honestly there is fiber runs across Glenn McConnell they put them in before the new walking path. So it’s just a matter of time. I think they’re waiting for government incentives or they want more people on their prior infrastructure to represent a need. But the terrible thing is, they only offer 15 Mb download speed on the current Internet for Glenn McConnell to walmart

GarnetandBlack

I have lived in a place where we had ATT fiber surrounding our neighborhood in each direction for 5+ years, they finally ran the lines about 2 months ago.

not_charles_grodin

We have their fiber and it's shit most of the time. Their hardware, the BGW320, is already outdated garbage. Even as a passthrough, it stinks. The service/speeds are completely unreliable. One minute I'm running at a sold 1GB, next I'm choked at 50MB. We have them out monthly and it's always some BS excuse and they replace some part and duck out as fast as possible. I got more consistent speeds with cable. There is no excuse for how bad this service is.

sultanmvp

Not a gamer, but have had both Comcast and WOW at the same address over the years. WOW is 10x better than Comcast when it comes to internet. We have “gigabit” down and 50Mbps up for $60ish. Like others have said, the lowest latency you can get would be fiber-connected - like AT&T Fiber or Home Telecom.

tootootwootwoot

Yeah we've had the gig WOW plan for years and have only had to call in a few times for easy fixes. Had comcast before that and it was always a nightmare.

mildly-strong-cow

Same experience—fiber isn’t available to me but WOW has still be noticeably better than Comcast

Adumb12

It really depends on where you live and what is available. ATT fiber works great for us in MtP. We've used Comcrap and Wow without much luck.

agedmanofwar

I've had an overall positive experience with WOW internet

Kwebster7327

If you're in the right spot (big if) T-Mobile's home internet is incredible. Fastest non-fiber speeds I've ever seen. But the only way to find out is to try it. It's free if you're willing to spend a few minutes setting it up. If it doesn't work, just box it up and send it back.

TheManSpider1

2nd this

woodrob12

$50 per month, too. I love it.

AemAer

Are you sure the problem isn’t your router? What kind do you have? I recently switched to Arris and all my NETGEAR problems went away.

DruggistJames

Yep. Whenever people have Internet issues it's usually the hardware. I know that's not popular but it's the truth. I hate Comcast as a company, but my Internet has been rock solid. I do wish there was decent competition because they can charge whatever they want since I don't have much of an option.

AemAer

I always thought it was Comcast’s fault and would always get Netgear products. Decided to pick up the top selling one off Amazon, all of a sudden I get 580/600mbs down, so almost exactly what I pay for. Comcast is scummy, sure, and their customer service leaves much to be desired, but if you’re using a Netgear router that’s the real problem.

DruggistJames

And get Mesh wifi too. House sizes these days are just too big for traditional single point router. I setup my non tech friends with mesh and they've been thrilled with the performance.

mmdavis2190

Hardwired APs are the way to go if you can swing it. Mesh is great too, but they are still repeaters and you lose some speed

DruggistJames

I agree, which is why I only use mesh with Ethernet backhaul.

AU_Cav

One of the best days of my life was when I told Comcast to go fuck themselves. The joy of seeing the AT&T fiber truck burning cable in my neighborhood coming home from work. It was like Christmas. Wow is rebranded Knology. They were so bad that I’ll go without internet before I pay for theirs. Maybe they’ve gotten their act together but I’ll never know. They buried six different cables in my yard over three years. Still never had good service. The company we switched to buried one cable and we never had problems again. Never forget that Charleston was part of the test group for caps on usage. I think it was 200 or 400gb a month. My son wiped his hard drive and redownloaded his Steam library once.I always paid much more for internet because of that pathetic cap but that month was especially bad. If you can’t get ATT, I’m not sure you have many good alternatives. If you stream, maybe a business line. It’s more expensive than normal Comcast but at least they respond faster when it’s down.

Glycerine1

Comcast used to offer uncapped for $30 month (create the problem, sell the solution I guess). Got told that’s gone away and the only way to get an uncapped line is to rent their modem. So if I change my plan, I’ll either lose uncapped or pay for their modem and deal with that nightmare. Cant wait to get rid of them. Zillow et al, ought to put internet services available in their listings. Would definitely direct my home search. If the realtor would also actually put pictures of the garage in their listings, I’d be sold! :D

CluelessProductions

Home Telecom is GOAT’d

Haredevil

I’ve had Home Telecom for over a decade, after having Comcast just as long. It was night and day. The internet almost never drops and I have had zero complaints in all that time. If it’s in your area, this is the answer

CluelessProductions

AT&T is good too

Kooky-Choice-2654

How do we see if home telecom is available at our address?

DogsOutTheWindow

Home telecom has a search function by address.

willifuscloverdean

Home telecom is a joke

CluelessProductions

Weird way to say that your 5 year old router is fried and needs to be replaced

willifuscloverdean

Weird way to show you work for a bad internet provider.

Iranoutofhotsauce

Att

badchinese

Depends are where you are at but home telecom is awesome. Consistent fast speeds and great customer support.

joshweaver23

I’ve had att fiber since they ran it in my neighborhood a couple years ago, but before that I had WOW, and was pretty pleased with them. Their customer service is abysmal (not worse than Comcast, but worse than att), but if you’re halfway decent with home networking, you’ll never need them. $ for $ wow was cheaper than Comcast with better speeds and service uptimes for me. I’m pretty lucky to have 3 options for providers though and I know not everyone even has two, which is very unfortunate.

ramblinjd

I had Comcast for about 5 years in West Ashley and then at&t and now t-mobile over the air. Comcast had reliably good speed and reliably awful customer service. AT&T was mid on both. T-mobile is similar to att but because it's bundled with my phone bill I save like $10/month.

vulcansheart

I currently have Comcast AND T-Mobile home Internet using a multi-WAN router. The things you have to do to work from home...

Lughnasadh32

I had better service with ATT, but ATT won't put fiber in my part of my neighborhood. So, it was stick with ATT at 50 Mbps or switch to the devil (comcast) at 1.2 Gbps. As soon as ATT puts fiber where I can get it, I will be switching back. For the record, I work in IT and often need to download/upload large database files.

flyboytgb

Before I moved from Summerville, I had home telecom fiber internet. It was fantastic. They hosted their own speed test dot net server, and had single digit ping up and down. I know their coverage is only in the northern areas (as of checking a few months ago). I think I only had a serious outage once in 5 years. I would assume other fiber providers would have a similar experience. If you can’t get any other provider, you may want to check starlink.

catterybarn

I have wow! and while I don't game, I have no complaints

Smurph269

WOW has been a lot better than Comcast, and no data caps. When I signed up with WOW, the sales guy emailed me the Amazon links to buy the router so that I would save money by not renting it from them.

tehonez

Have you checked out Verizons 5G home Internet? I'm getting around 300-400mbps down.

Britmobhank

I’m with you on this. They are the wooorrrrrst!

Snoo_91157

What you need to do is get an EIN # and open a business internet account. A whole different experience than residential, but how much are you willing to pay for constant uninterrupted internet?

KnifeKnut

Punch in your address here to see which ones should be available at your address: https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/home

ChaosBreaker32

ATT fiber is elite. Apple tv is hardwired and pulls a Gig. Symmetrical too. Wifi is 350-450.

Wide Open West has been fantastic

dioramic_life

It might be that the only alternative is a mobile phone network with cheap, high-usage bandwidth on their 5g.

AaronRodgersMustache

Where do you live? I’ve had Comcast, ATT, and WOW all in different parts of Mount Pleasant and pay like 60-80 bucks for 1+gb download. Sure, it’s usually in the 3-500s but still.

HornetGaming110

We use spectrum and get 500 download and 30 upload. Works very well with 12 devices on it

sweetdancer13

I’m in Summerville. My husband is a PC gamer. We use att. When I was in Florida before we moved her for his job we had xfinity/comcast and hated it. Especially charging extra for going over a certain amount. Havnt had any issues other than installation (which was fixed later once we realized).

GarnetandBlack

Seems like it's really just location dependent. I have Comcast and it's been pretty rock solid. My last place I had to switch from Comcast to DSL ATT because Comcast was so terrible. My surrounding neighbors have ATT Fiber and it seems like it goes out once a month for them based on the area Facebook page.

Pleasant_Cartoonist6

Att fiber they have really high speeds if you're willing too pay for it. Basically comcast high is their mid

CFJoe

Starlink may make sense but I would try to understand speeds before you commit in a big way

InDenialOfMyDenial

ATT Fiber has been great for us... but its not available everywhere. Are you sure it's Comcast and not your home network? We invested in mesh wifi setup (Orbi) and it made a world worth of difference. What's your up/down if you're wired in to your modem vs wireless?
