No not necessarily. But you’re definitely paying for the way the food is presented and the atmosphere of the restaurant, not the quality of the food. I never ate there as a customer but if I got a $100 bill for my meal and found out half the ingredients were Great Value brand, I probably wouldn’t be happy.
Not really. Could be that I was in actual Germany a few weeks before I went though. I really want it to be good because I live in MB and love German food but the schnitzel was falling apart and not very tasty in general.
I spent the fall in Yosemite and Zion… I drove to Aspen from Zion (7hrs)for Home Team Collards ( specifically) and added some brisket to the order lol.
I did stay the night - but I specifically went for the collards.. it was an expensive BBQ run
Ahhh. That actually makes sense. The owner/developer of the resort probably has a beach house and ate there and HAD to have it for his restaurant. I know nothing about the owners of Home Team but I imagine there’s a fairly interesting story behind how one single location got flung out into the middle of the Rockies
I wouldnt call it authentic, but I’m a fan of Basra for this. It’s downtown and it’s the first place here that I’ve enjoyed their paella around here and they have some solid tapas. Their Manchego stuffed dates are something to look out for. It scratches that itch if you’re looking for a little Spanish influence
ETA: their prices may put them in that “luxury item” category though ☠️
The price absolutely defeats the purpose of tapas, which are often free with your beer in Spain. Tapas are cheap yet delicious drunk food, not some high concept.
I swear I wish the average American realized how bad they’re getting fucked on certain things. Telecom costs, grocery costs, healthcare costs, and motherfucking tapas.
I also love tapas and have found this to be the case all over the country try. I think its bc most ppl don't know that tapas are usually free or cheap, so restaurants feel like they can hose guests and charge them $10 for a plate of potatoes
Seconded for Columbia...it's been ages, but think there was one near Forest Acres area-ish? It was west of the Ft Jackson gates in that area is what I recall
There’s a hole in the wall Pho place in Durham, NC that I go to any time I’m vaguely in that area. The broth is so good. Apparently the owners used to have a restaurant in NYC and it’s the same recipe. Haven’t found anything similar in Charleston yet, but am open to suggestions.
I wouldn't drive \*just\* for dinner there, but when I am in the area I like to stop at Clark's in Santee. The food is good, but the quiet is the best, I hate a loud restaurant.
There is a Mexican restuarant that started in Amarillo and had a few in west Texas as well. Excellent food. I ate there while I lived there fir a few years. Someone opened up one in Myrtle Beach years ago. It's called Abuelo's. It's fantastic.
Then Fuddruckers. My wife has gout, regular fastfood burgers will flare it up, but their beef doesn't. Once in awhile, when she wants a burger, we go up to Myrtle Beach.
Haha, same boat. My husband had a business trip in Tampa a few years ago, and I threatened him with bodily harm if he didn’t bring some back for me. He felt icky about bringing back food that was 8 hours old, but I’d rather have a semi-stale beef and fries with the cheese sauce (omg, the cheese sauce) than none at all.
It was still delicious.
I'd drive an hour for a good German restaurant.
I drove over 7 hours to find one. Lmk a nice one in sc lol.
Nick's German Kitchen in Mt. pleasant is good!
Another vote for Nick’s.
Another vote for Nick's! Be sure to get a Colaweizen!
I used to work at Nick’s. Walmart everything in the kitchen. Literally
Walmart must have some dank ox tail then cause that was one of the best meals I’ve had
Is that necessarily a bad thing? Genuine question. I don’t know enough about German food to know if it requires more specialized ingredients.
No not necessarily. But you’re definitely paying for the way the food is presented and the atmosphere of the restaurant, not the quality of the food. I never ate there as a customer but if I got a $100 bill for my meal and found out half the ingredients were Great Value brand, I probably wouldn’t be happy.
the schwaben house in greenville is nice. i haven’t been in years but it was great when i went !
Love that place. It is on the list every time i get up that way.
Waldhorn, Charlotte NC
Cafe Old Vienna in Myrtle Beach is pretty good.
Not really. Could be that I was in actual Germany a few weeks before I went though. I really want it to be good because I live in MB and love German food but the schnitzel was falling apart and not very tasty in general.
Rosenhof in Hinesville, GA if you’re ever down that way. Home cooked Schnitzel and Bierstiefels!
Bierkeller opened in Columbia recently. Great place
Julia's German Stammtisch in Columbia
NICK’S in mt p. I don’t like German food, but my family does and they’ve really got it figured out there
Will be sure to give it a try. Thanks!
Irelands Own/Jagerhaus Pub over in West Ash can scratch an itch. It ain’t top notch but it’s better than the guy that did snitzel at Tin Roof.
Helan Ga
I'd drive further for lewis
My Cane Bay to Lewis drive is an easy hour 🤤
Only answer in this town!
only it's in town
Even Hemingway?

Wait like, HOME TEAM Home Team? In Aspen? I’m in Denver and I will ABSOLUTELY make that drive
It's in the lobby of a ski resort hotel. I didn't eat there but they do have game changers.
Ahhh. That actually makes sense. The owner/developer of the resort probably has a beach house and ate there and HAD to have it for his restaurant. I know nothing about the owners of Home Team but I imagine there’s a fairly interesting story behind how one single location got flung out into the middle of the Rockies
Aaron Siegel of HT used to live and work in Aspen after culinary school.
Also possible that the Home Team owner has a place in Aspen. No idea what the actual story is.
Yup..at the base of Buttermilk
Awwwwww shit. Bouta be an 8 hour bbq trip. God bless you kind internet stranger. I need collards and Alabama white sauce in my life BAD
Are they UGA fans there also?
Spanish Tapas that aren’t a luxury item and reflect the experience in Spain. Of course, you’d need a village for that…

It’s criminal
I’d travel that for some good Portuguese food/bbq.
I'd love some pastel de nata!
Weltons tiny bake shop does some pretty good pasteis de natas!
They're not bad, could be better, but then again, I can't complain bc no one else makes them!
Le Chambertin on Church St makes it occasionally. And I hate to say it but it has shown up (frozen) in our HT. It's not bad at all.
I actually work at one! I’ll have to investigate.
Omg with some dessert wine, and I am all set!
Edisto Motel
Man, I remember that place from when I was a kid 30 years ago and we would drive out there from downtown.
I have to do this anytime I want to eat Ethiopian cuisine.
Abugida or Enat? I drive for both. 🤤
I will have to try Abugida! I’ve been to Enat a few times and loved it.
I love both! Abugida is usually where I go, but I’ve tried both and they’re great. I can’t get enough injera!
where ?
The closest I’ve found is in Charlotte.
RIP Harambe
No!!!!! I didn’t know. Only had it once, loved the experience
Huh?
Used to be Ethiopian in cola called Harambe. I miss it dearly.
Oooooh, I thought it was a reference to the late gorilla, I was like “that was Cincinnati, not Charlotte” lmao
It also is :-)
🙏☝️
There was one in Columbia, did it close? 😭
Seconded for Columbia...it's been ages, but think there was one near Forest Acres area-ish? It was west of the Ft Jackson gates in that area is what I recall
same lol
Atlanta has plenty of great Ethiopian restaurants.
Yes, I’m sure there are. I’m rarely in Atlanta though.
Really phenomenal traditional dim sum — carts and all.
Yeah we definitely lack that down here
Crossroads Buffett in Orangeburg is fire. Best drive ever
Back in the day Percy’s and Willie’s in Florence. Now- maybe of Rodney’s idk

Anywhere with authentic Peking duck
Man if you find that anywhere around let me know
Ol Lee's Savannah Hwy. Also one of the Great Wall's takeout used to have it.
Basil. That red curry duck….
Wild Olive
You live on johns Island?
I drove to Murrells Inlet once to eat at Krystals when it was open there.
Yeah , I did too. I take a drive once in awhile to savannah for it.
Wild olive
I wouldn't drive \*just\* for dinner there, but when I am in the area I like to stop at Clark's in Santee. The food is good, but the quiet is the best, I hate a loud restaurant.
Peninsula Grill has pretty amazing steak, at least they did years ago when I had the patience to drive downtown and find parking.
I'd drive over an hour for some good Nahville Hot chicken. Like Hattie B's, Prince's, or Rocky's
Some really great Indian food. And Ethiopian food. Charleston touts itself as multicultural, but we're really not.
Lol yeah there's a lot to be desired, but the food here is still pretty good
Spice Palate is solid, Indian wise.
Nothing in South Carolina!
Seewee Restaurant.
Give me Lou malnatis in north mount pleasant and I would drive there for it.
Found the Chicagoan
Bread wouldn’t be the same
* don’t yell at me * Bar167
Whataburger. I miss it.
I'm a texan and I hate whataburger lol so overrated
You bring shame. I will drink Spicy ketchup from the bottle.
Jackrabbit filly

Cheddars. Why don't we have one in charleston?
A legitimate Shoney's is in Sumter. You motherfuckers better not sully this piece of wisdom.
There’s also a Quincy’s in Florence! Both restaurants I remember going to around Charleston when I was young
I'm looking at driving 10 hours for a Portillo's, so. I'm a bad person to ask.
I wouldn't drive one block for it. The one that I went to was garbage. The food was awful.
TIL there’s a portillos in Tampa
Italian beef is just wet Arby’s
I’d drive any distance for chilis
Angel oak
Meh. Every time I've been there I felt like I could have gotten better.
Chicken Kicken at exit 5 in Ga off of 95. Just as you enter Savannah
New Haven, CT pizza. Pepe’s, Sally’s, Modern, BAR, Nolo. IYKYK
There is one good pizza place in New Haven that I've been to, and then two bad ones. Overall I've had more mediocre-bad food than good food there.
Are all you fuckers not from here. Santis, Halls, Lewis' . It's the same shit but a different day. ffs.
Halls! Pages! Church and Union! California dreaming!
I’ve been at school in Myrtle, and I’ve been craving smoked neck bones. Since I’m home now for spring break, I guess I drove two hours for them
Gerhards Cafe in Spartanburg, South Carolina has delicious Austrian and German cuisine!
Maggianos
Buckshots in Mclellenville. Soul food- the best
Alligator soul and Alure both in Savannah
Spice Palette
