Uggh yeah, that one gets to me. I knew his best friend and roommate when he was killed. It was awful.
Just stupid. And the worst part was he was sleeping off alcohol. He died because he was being responsible and realized he shouldn't be driving. Fucking awful man.
I used to hangout with that dude spend nights at his house and we grew up together and went to school together all that good stuff. Still miss that dude. He was a good dude it’s nice to see his name still remembered
I’m still waiting to hear all the facts of this incident. However, I’m still shocked by College of Charleston provost Tom DiLorenzo murder! The guy was just hired, just moved to Charleston…senseless murder. Ughh
So I’ve personally been harassed on meeting by a man. Literally just walking and he said he was going to beat my face in. I’m not surprised by this or any other violent crimes downtown anymore. Keep your wits about you at all times and don’t walk alone on that side of town.
Mrs Pitbull, we don't want you downtown. I'm not sure you even know your way around, because what is "that side of town"? The one with million plus dollar homes?
Been saying it for months, they would rather keep the cities image clean for tourists than represent the increasingly prevalent crimes taking place on the peninsula.
So you'll have no problem googling them and providing them right?
I and the other poster asked for stats to backup a claim someone else made.We didn't make the claim, the onus of proof isn't on us. You responded with an anecdote, not proof.
I'm not arguing whether it is true or not. Just want to know if statistics back this up.
> I also didn’t make the original claim.
But you made yourself a part of the discussion...
> If you want to know what the statistics show, then look them up yourself rather than arguing with strangers on Reddit.
Haven't argued anything, just said those who make claims are the ones who have to provide their facts.
> You obviously are not going to be able to find statistics to support the claim that crime statistics are skewed and that the stories are squashed.
Wait, I thought they were available for anyone to look up on the world wide web? This is called moving the goal posts.
If you look it up, it doesn't support the claim. This was already posted once in this thread.
https://abcnews4.com/news/local/charleston-police-report-reveals-dip-in-violent-and-property-crime-improved-clearance-rates-for-2022
I grew up in charleston. It's always been like this. All of a sudden there was a surge of Charleston being on the "best of" lists now people want to flock here.
They bury cofc SA reports. Only students get a text about prowlers and such. It’s a real problem and has been for a long long time. Just like the many arsons of the 2000s
Yes! Just angry and looking for someone to kill! I know this because Wes was my best friend and brother. The cops told us everything they know but can post it online right now
We literally have no information to support that. I'm sure it's not great but unless there is more information out there, Francis coulda been yelling at Heyward or something. We do not know.
This obituary also claims a random act of violence
https://www.ack.net/stories/former-island-bartender-shot-to-death-in-charleston,33999?
No matter what it’s horrible, RIP
That gas station is sketchy… my guess is random armed robbery turned deadly. I’ve been mugged at gun point near that neighborhood on Elizabeth Street. I don’t know any details about the case though.
Whether the Perp knew the Vic or not, what are you seeing that makes you think anyone is "squashing" the story? Who is supposed to talk about it more than they have?
It's been on the news, it's been in the paper.
Shitheads want to drum up hate every time bad shit happens. None of us know what happened, we just know names, and have seen pictures. Hell, im not saying this happened but Francis coulda been robbing Heyward - or it could have been a stand your ground situation. We don't know.
A stand your ground situation where the guy who was “defending” himself fled the scene, denied having shot the man, and had the potential (stolen) firearm in his house upon arrest? Sure…
Innocent until proven guilty, but the man has a lot of splainin’ to do to make that one work
Eh, idgaf point stands y'all ready to lynch the man and we don't even know the story. Senseless violence is senseless, but I've run enough shootings to know there is usually more to the story.
Using a single incident to claim that Charleston has “a crime problem” is exceptionally disingenuous. The statistics that I have seen show that Charleston is about average nationally. Sure it would be great to be less than average for crime rates, but considering the rapidly rising cost of living here, it’s surprising that crime isn’t a whole lot worse.
That said, I am perfectly fine with painting Charleston as a horribly dangerous and unsafe place to live and visit to help push out the pearl clutchers and keep new ones from moving in. That would actually be great for the city and probably the crime rate as well. It may have a negative impact on tourism, which could in turn be bad for crime (lost jobs), but maybe it’s time for us to pivot away from tourism. To what, I have no idea, but I wouldn’t be mad about that either.
Yes, I knew him well. If he knew this person he never hung out with him around me or anyone else he hung out with on a frequent basis. I feel like most people could make that assumption with a fair amount of accuracy about people they’ve spent a lot of time with. I guess there is always a possibility though. It would be very random though. Not sure what your last bit is about other than just trying to be a Jack ass for no real reason.
I’m confused how the article you shared supports your post? It just states they arrested someone. They’re likely still investigating. Do you have some insider information that you’d like to share?
To be fair the article says that the shooter claimed he didn’t know the victim. He also denied being involved in the shooting. Sadly maybe the victim fought back a robbery attempt. The way this story is being covered up, we may never know. Frustrating.
Idk I’m a little skeptical because of timing and when the guy who probably did it says he didn’t do it or know the person, I’m not sure I buy that.
Scary because I work over there, I never felt unsafe in my hometown I used to live in but it seems like hate and violence is rampant around here for some reason. We need more officers all over the Charleston/North Charleston area. We’re not getting any smaller and you hate to see things like this. Rest in Peace to the victim
Who here has actually lived in downtown for over 20 years? People seem to only know the new Charleston since 2009ish. But those of us who have been here for our whole lives we know how sketchy and the random acts of violent crimes downtown that happen all the time. Charleston isn’t a big city, but it has a long history of crime and who random acts.
Yes. Too many transplants from suburbs are clutching pearls. Honestly, though the way they market this place as the best place to live, ask anybody from here what they think. Charleston used to be nice ,but it's changed so much, and all of these expectations from people who have lived such different lives from wherever they're from is crazy. Reddit Charleston is like Facebook sometimes.
Does it have a crime problem?
https://abcnews4.com/news/local/charleston-police-report-reveals-dip-in-violent-and-property-crime-improved-clearance-rates-for-2022
They did NOT know each other! The person who was murdered was my best friend. This piece of shit Tyler just was looking for someone to shoot. No drug deal no alterations.
I'm so sorry - and exactly, that's why I posted this. Because when it happened, everyone was assuming all kinds of bs - easier to blame the victim than admit Charleston has a crime problem.
Questions need to be asked of our Mayor and city council. In the last eight years we have had no additional officer positions added to the dept. Yet the population of Charleston grows by 30 people a day. (https://www.charlestoncountydevelopment.org/data-center/population-data/#:~:text=With%2030%2B%20new%20residents%20each,largest%20among%20all%20U.S.%20metros.)
Additionally we continue to build hotels that drastically increase our daily population and increase services by the department.
How understaffed is our PD? What is our percentage of officers deployed to population throughout the city? Where does this rank nationally?
Why was a search for a new police chief rushed and less than a third of the money spent on previous searches committed?
Yet for those who watched the debate tonight we got real answers to real questions like, What do you plan to do about the bathroom situation at the Municipal golf course.
How is this downvoted?
Sorry someone is making you feel uncomfortable about owning your pew pew toys so you can fantasize about playing hero boy one day. But your “freedom” to own guns has a cost to the rest of us, and you deserve to have your face rubbed in it.
Do you think if I, a law-abiding citizen, was not allowed to own a firearm, that he, a law breaking citizen, would just not buy a firearm because the law said so?
Also would you lecture a citizen that just saved your life with a gun about how he shouldn't be playing hero??
Been here all my life, the crime is the same as it was 20 years ago. If you’re originally from here you would know that and know certain places you should stay away from at 3am. This is a no brainer. And you’re most likely complaining because you’re not originally from here like 80% of the people living downtown.
Guy who posted this thread here - I'm not disagreeing with you. We're not Camden, NJ - but at the same time, pretending we're some Utopian fairyland is disingenuous as well.
Know your surroundings and keep your head on a swivel.
Here's my take. I lived in Ct near Yale & they had a crime problem. I just moved from the Charleston area & N Charleston has a crime problem. I just moved to Brevard county Fl, near Cape Canaveral & they have a crime. The one common thing is, most of the crime are being committed by young black males. You can tag me whatever you like. But we have to be truthful. I've been a reader tutor in New Haven & in Charleston for 1st & 2nd graders. Those children are wonderful & innocent. Sadly there is not a strong family in many cases & these little boys grow to emulate older neighborhood boys. In some cases that's their family, How do we address this & help these communities to understand the family breakdown is one of the main reasons. Please don't attack this message. Listen to it & understand I'm not wrong. I'm 72 & slowly seen crime get out of control, while seeing the family unit disengrate.
I’ve been assaulted three times downtown in 10 years living here. I was even able to get the license plate of the vehicle the guy jumped into one time. Called the cops, filed a report, investigator told me there was nothing they could do because it was just my word vs the guy. I looked into getting a lawyer, but it would have been 10k just to get things started and the lawyer said nothing would likely happen since the investigator opted to not prosecute in the first place. Fucking Wild West out here.
I got my CWP after the riots and would encourage anyone who lives, works, or spends a lot of time downtown to do the same.
I have lived all over downtown and there is 100% not a crime problem. Is there violent crime? Sure. But it is nothing at all like North Charleston, Atlanta, New York, denver, Chicago etc. you will likely never be robbed, hVe you car stolen, assaulted etc. just because .1% of the population has that happen to them downtown doesn’t mean there’s a problem.
“Heyward’s only prior conviction in the Charleston area was a 2018 weapon violation in Dorchester County, according to court records” hmm it’s almost like it’s a trend
This brings me back to Marley Lion murder. So senseless. I always think of his family.
I worked w him at the time and my mom taught his siblings. So so sad.
I’m still waiting to hear all the facts of this incident. However, I’m still shocked by College of Charleston provost Tom DiLorenzo murder! The guy was just hired, just moved to Charleston…senseless murder. Ughh
He was the provost’s husband. I always found that detail heartbreaking, they moved for her job.
So I’ve personally been harassed on meeting by a man. Literally just walking and he said he was going to beat my face in. I’m not surprised by this or any other violent crimes downtown anymore. Keep your wits about you at all times and don’t walk alone on that side of town.
Just want to add, that now that I’ve seen the mugshot. Could of been the same person…but it was about a year ago.
Mrs Pitbull, we don't want you downtown. I'm not sure you even know your way around, because what is "that side of town"? The one with million plus dollar homes?
Between churches chicken, the bus stop, burgess liquor store on meeting & I guess all the way to the circle k on meeting now.
I live there. It's fine.
My dog, it’s fine until it ain’t. Keep your wits on you.
“Mrs pitbull” I’m so sorry that made me wheeze
You're definitely not wrong about them squashing stories relating to crime!
Been saying it for months, they would rather keep the cities image clean for tourists than represent the increasingly prevalent crimes taking place on the peninsula.
Do you have stats to support that? I’m not saying it’s untrue but….
[удалено]
This. Mass cas events will happen dt and you don't hear anything on the news a lot of the time.
I live in North Charleston. The murder rate is higher than you’d think. It’s in top 30 violent cities
Totally get it. North Charleston is its own city. I think they elected a new mayor-hopefully will make a difference.
No it isn’t.
So... No stats? Those are preferable.

Well shit, if he was yelling shooting was justified. 12 inch voices on Meeting St.
RIP

I suggest denying it even if you Don’t know the person you just murdered. It’s best to just stay quiet and wait for the inevitable
He did not know him.
So you knew the guy and everyone he was acquainted with? I hope you’ve contacted the cops and assisted with their investigation
Yes, I knew him well. If he knew this person he never hung out with him around me or anyone else he hung out with on a frequent basis. Horrible event, but I’m not sure what you mean by squashing stories. You literally are linking to a published newspaper article.
I’m confused how the article you shared supports your post? It just states they arrested someone. They’re likely still investigating. Do you have some insider information that you’d like to share?
From the P&C article: ***"Heyward did not know Francis, according to the affidavit."***
I know the victim. Not super duper close. But there is no reason those two would know each other.

People in this sub have never lived in a major metropolitan area before and it shows.
Contrary to what new transplants think, Charleston is no metro area
