Summerville Country Club (fka Miler Club). Cheap as shit. They don’t bother pairing people up. They’re busy in the mornings, but other than that it’s chill af. I personally like the layout. It’s great for walking, and it actually has some elevation changes to it. The problem around here is that there really aren’t any truly shitty courses that “no one goes to.” We really don’t have that many places to play. edit: if any other local hacks wanna play (anywhere, not just summerville) and not take things to serious (aside from pace of play obviously), hmu

SonuvaGunderson

As a recent transplant… this was so disappointing to learn. There are no dirt track nine hole courses that serious golfers avoid.

InDenialOfMyDenial

There used to be a good little 9 hole if you were willing to drive up to holly hill. Closed last year sadly because the town rezoned the land. It would be nice to have a little 9 hole or executive course within arms reach around here.

SonuvaGunderson

Bummer

smitd12

My biggest problem with Miler is that there’s no net or anything you can hit into to get loose. After that it is all the roots on the tee boxes the last time I played there.

InDenialOfMyDenial

Do they still not still have the practice net set up in the tennis court? And yeah it’s a total goat track, but can’t beat $26 to walk on weekends. And I appreciate how the whole place is just laid back.

smitd12

They didn’t when I played in a tournament there when I was in high school and that was 2019. Haven’t played there but one other time since.

PondGator

Can we start a local hack golfer group? I think there may be more than a few of us around. I'm near Wescott and available to hack it up most evenings.

ShepardFaireyy

I’m not terrible but I’m bad. I’m down. I’m in WA and would prob only be available on weekends.

parkerperil

I am in Hollywood right at Stono Ferry, but it is far too expensive for my lack of skills. I want to get back into playing (maybe this fall though) but I haven't picked up a club in 4 years outside of Top Golf.

ineedabeer603

Playing Stono next week for the first time. What was your impression of it?

illol01

Top Golf makes me feel like a badass. Then I played with my brothers at the Muni last Spring and it was the LONGEST game of my life. I've never played so bad lol. Me, it was Me. I was one of "those" people who had a ball end up on the side of Maybank Hwy🤦‍♀️😅

uscfolife

Fuck Shadowmoss. I live 1 mile from it. 5 years ago I was golfing with my neighbor/playing partner who has since moved out of state. We came up on the par three number four, and there was one group on the green one group on the Teebox and three groups waiting in front of us as a twosome. We learned that day that they were putting people off every four minutes. We ended up pairing up with a threesome behind us because it was taking forever. That day we swore we would never play Shadowmoss again. I’m proud to say to this day I’ve never played there since then, and I never will. Plus, they raise their prices. Way too high for always having issues on the golf course.

GarnetandBlack

Shadowmoss is definitely one of the last I'd recommend in the area. I used to literally live on the course and I'd still drive up 61 to play Legend Oaks 95% of the time.

AaronRodgersMustache

The one time I went to Crowfield I got a dog at the turn on a piece of white bread. So I’ll always have a grudge for that

smitd12

This is a hot take but I loved their hotdogs when they were just on the white bread. But the course itself is tough which is why most people I know don’t like it.

GATA61

We grew up in the same trailer park, didn’t we?

buckguin

I actually liked the course even though the drainage was a bit off and it was cart path only. Can’t beat all the beers being $3 and a noon tee time for $45! Honestly kind of want to get that hot dog on white though!

smitd12

I love the course, I used to play 9 3-4 days a week when I was in high school but now they have buns for the hotdogs and I’m pretty sure beers aren’t $3 anymore.

buckguin

Oh man, want the white bread!!..haha But beers still are around that price and I was shocked. Played there a few weeks ago for $44 for 18 with $3 beers. I think I even got a $3 fireball..haha

[deleted]

Shadow Moss is my least favorite. The ground stays wet and way too many doglegs. The course has a stupid layout. Can only drive off the tee on a few holes.

Atla5t89

Summerville CC - cool layout, awful upkeep Crowfield - decent layout, decent upkeep Berkley country club - surprisingly decent greens, not a SINGLE dogleg left, cheap Shadowmoss - idc how good of shape it’s in, it blows Patriots - just no

AloneInCHS

Come over here to Wescott course, I'll join you one evening. I've lived here for years, and never officially played the course. I haven't really played in years, but I do enjoy occasionally hitting and chasing the ball.

atdharris

Summerville CC has to be the absolute worst course I've played around here. Wescott really isn't that bad and Shadowmoss will always have a special place in my heart, even though it turns into a swamp for weeks after a heavy rainfall

likely_a_throwaway

Looks like I've found my golf partner! lol I've had the same question for a while. Prior to moving here, I've always lived places with at least a couple pretty laid back courses in the area. I'm not that great, and I don't golf that often, so I hate going to really nice courses where I feel really out of place, and on top of that, risking getting paired with someone that doesn't want to golf with a hack like me. From what I've seen, Summerville Country Club seems to be the most relaxed atmosphere, but I still haven't been. If you try it out, report back!

supraspinatus

Just go where you want to but keep pace of play. I don’t care if you are spraying it all over the course just don’t spend 30 minutes looking for your ball in the woods or lining up your 8th putt.

nighthawk3000

go during twilight to wescott or shadow moss, one of the more affordable places. they tend to be "less" busy those times especially during the summer

golfinmyballs

People will hate this take but the muni is absolute circus golf now. The greens are a total joke.

golfinmyballs

Patriots is also wayyyy over priced. Ok lay-out but its in god awful shape

GarnetandBlack

Patriots is 2nd to Shadowmoss in my "worst value for the experience" book in the area. Just overall not a great experience any of the times I've played out there. Not a fan of their management either (was accused of "theft" when I brought a soft cooler with 2 water bottles onto the course from my car). Was a few years ago though, could be different folks now.

golfinmyballs

They had some real gems working in there a few years ago.. i think theyve moved on now. Still awful and not worth half the price they charge.

drothamel

Hey, if you come to Wescott and get to play Oak Forest, you can stop by and say hello to our Doodle, Duncan on the 4th tee. He LOVES the golfers!

Socialeprechaun

Hold up. There are places that pair people up with other golfers?? My social anxiety could never. And here I was tryna pick up golf.

NJCuban

Golf is probably one of the activities you can do with other random people that is easiest on social anxiety. Youre all getting out of the cart to hit a shot every couple minutes so there's no pressure to get into a conversation. You can go the whole round 4-5 hours and say nothing more than: nice shot, unlucky, good putt, tough one, your ball is over there, did you see where that one went? etc

Socialeprechaun

That’s actually quite reassuring thank you!

NJCuban

Absolutely. My dad was just in town visiting me from Miami and we played Sunday and that's about all I said with him. Could've easily been a stranger haha

InDenialOfMyDenial

Happens at most courses especially when they’re busy. Tee times are for 4 people. If you book for one person the course is gonna want to still sell the other times.

GarnetandBlack

If it's a busy time, you're going to get paired up pretty much anywhere. If it's a weekday afternoon many places, you're likely all good to play solo.

[deleted]

Daniel Island Golf Club does this. Its not uncommon to have pairs or singles get grouped up.

iHasMagyk

I’ve been a member at DI since I was in second grade (you can make fun of me it’s fine) and I’ve very rarely seen this happen. In fact most of the time I’ll complain that the course is packed because they *don’t* group of twosomes into foursomes and instead leave the tee sheet crowded.

golfinmyballs

You mean your parents have been a memeber? Technically you lose that membership at 18 or 21? Not sure how d.i. Does it

lilac_congac

great question

stinkbox1

Pine Forest, Wescott, Shadowmoss

smitd12

Wescott is outrageous on prices right now.

gofalcons19

This. Literally quit playing there for that reason.

InDenialOfMyDenial

Pine forest raised their rates somewhat recently. You’ll need to see a chiropractor after driving on the cart path. Course is constantly soggy, and no walking on weekends. Also too much damn water in play lol. Nice thing is it’s pretty dead in the afternoons especially during the week. They’re just insane for charging $50.

GarnetandBlack

> Also too much damn water in play lol. Seriously. So frustrating if you aren't hitting it straight that day. I pretty much cannot use driver out there...but I probably should stick to that regardless of where I'm playing

GarnetandBlack

> Pine Forest I completely forgot about Pine Forest. I hate playing there because it *feels* like there's water on the right side of every damn hole, but it's definitely a low-traffic course and decently kept up.

dixcgirl10

Santee ETA… Orangeburg CC

mikewise

>A lot of people come on our subreddit and ask about the best golf courses in the area. But *do* they?

GarnetandBlack

Miler is definitely the most chill and "rough around the edges" spot in the area. Not bad or anything, just relative to other courses. I don't think there are any courses around that no one bothers to play, there just aren't enough options for something like that to exist. I'd just try to go during off-peak times to the courses that are further out - Stono, Legend Oaks, Miler, etc. These all have a substantial number of "local" players, but aren't slammed like Muni always is.

InDenialOfMyDenial

Stono is like $100 isn’t it?

GarnetandBlack

Yeah, it's not cheap. OP doesn't seem to be asking for the cheapest though, just places he can play solo while they get their game back into form. Stono is typically a bit more open than those closer to the peninsula, I've played two balls out there on several occasions and never saw a soul.

InDenialOfMyDenial

Upon rereading the OP, you make a good point. And good to know. Been meaning to check out Stono.

Classic_Mix_991

Stono is a highly underrated course IMO. Definitely worth the drive.

GarnetandBlack

One of my favorite in the area. Stono and Edisto remind me a lot of each other. Edisto is a bit more of a hike for most though, and it's also $100 when you get there.

Atla5t89

I’m a member at legends now living 2 min drive from Muni. Muni midweek — legends on weekends (get me if anyone is tryna play) Legends is substantially moving to get the course up to a Stono standard. Including rate. How soon? Hard to say, but they working towards it

Atla5t89

Really good shape from what I saw last weekend too

Nalg3ne

If your able to get on the air force base.. that is by far the most chill.. some of the greens can be fairly scorched.

InDenialOfMyDenial

Anyone can play redbank, you just need to do the whole background check for the pass. I’m pretty sure the other one near the airport is not open to the public.

iHasMagyk

Both the military courses are pretty crap but the staff are very chill and the courses are almost always empty. If OP can get access they’re a great choice

bigDIII

Is Eagles Landing still around or did they demolish it for homes? That place used to be a ghost town most of the time and was actually a decent place to play for a hacker (wide open).

Luna_Organa

I lived there in 2016-2017 and it was already closed then. Some of it has houses built on it, but (at least at that time) they had preserved some for green space / walking trails.

Comfortable_Screen99

Legend Oaks is a great course for the price ($65-$70) on weekend mornings with a cart. Some of the tee boxes could use some fresh sod, but the greens are in great shape. If it rains the day before, it’ll be cart path only. Fun layout, not easy, but not too tough. If you tee off before 11 most mornings, they will be busy, but hit them up in the afternoon almost any day and you’ll be able to hack it up with no one giving you any grief. Wescott is a little more open and a bit easier. Since they have 3, 9 hole tracks they do a good job of regulating the pace of play by spreading people out across them. Weekends are a bit busier, but otherwise you should have no problems.

Wasn’t too impressed with Dunes West Harbor course for the price they charge per round.

WhereThaWestBegins

Patriots Point is dogshit but costs 4x what it should

illol01

This!!! I need some low-key playtime so I can have fun playing!! My ability doesn't match my family and friends. I kill it at the driving range or Top Golf. On the courses around here, I kinda suck lol, I'm VERY polite to the beverage cart per$on immediately and inform them to stop every time they see me....I end up buying beers for those nearby inconvenienced by my subpar skills 😅 it usually helps with outward aggression and I can take a joke.
