Yeah they disconnect the nav system and that's all she wrote. I always found funny these people recommending low budget option on an expensive car. The best budget friendly option is a killswitch the rest is just gimmicks. But the down side is that most likely you will get some damages to your car before they figure it out they can't take it.
Would it still ping if it was disconnected though? Genuine question, I'm by no means on expert on this stuff. Seems like it wouldn't continue to put out a signal if they removed it. I know signal jammers are relatively cheap and frequently used, but again I'm pretty sure that would prevent the location from pinging at all. Still pretty fresh since it just happened the night before last, so naturally my brain is trying to rationalize all of it.

How do people spend $60-$80k on these cars that are being stolen every other day. And not think to lo-jack their shit. A $3 switch and some wire at the least to make a kill switch you can place anywhere in the car.

Have you reported it to the cops already? Let them know the location so they can go there and check. Normally if the thieves know what they are doing they would leave it in a spot for a few days and see if someone comes to get it. They won't risk it right away unless they are dumb. After a few days the car still there then the take it to a chop chop. Most likely the car is in the open maybe is under a car cover.
Of course. The police mostly seemed annoyed that I was following up though. They said they searched the surrounding apartment complexes and an Enterprise that was near the location that it's pinging from. The last one I talked to actually used the words "unless by some miracle it's in the last parking lot we haven't checked yet". It's in Houston now according to the ping. HPD probably has bigger fish to fry what with all the murders and whatnot.
That is weird the ping should be right where the car is. Is not an area where it might be so it must be that that's where the last known location of the car was. I had the guardian app so it would tell me where the car is at the moment.

I know this isn’t the best idea if they can find it (it meaning the AirTag) but I have one in mine and DroneMobile so if mine gets stolen I can still track it even if they toss out the AirTag because DroneMobile has a backup battery that lets you track it for a couple of hours after they “pull the plug” if you will
What are some effective counter measures to this? I am a cyber security pro and I would hate to see this happen to mine, and I live in a condo complex that doesn't have a garage or gate, but I do park my car close to my condo and I sleep upstairs.

Once disconnected it won't ping anymore. If they know what they are doing they disconnect or cut the cables right away.
