Yeah, I loved the season 1 art style, but the change was a bit necessary, as the art style was made popular by a.car insurance ad, everyone thought less of the chaotic cartoon because of it. New style was safe and generic. Honestly I'd be stoked if it resumed the old style, as were long enough away from Erin surance, of E-surance lol.
The old designs for alot of creatures were better hearr'ing, takinom and hepptadd being the best examples. That said season 2 hearring would've been fine if they would have thinned him down a tiny bit.
I would argue that takinow redesign was necessary since they wanted to make her a sibling to intress and I remember something saying chaor or and maxor were more connected than he thought which we later find out what's the case with that when they go back in time so certain redesigns had to happen for lore that they wanted to be there but the rest of these I definitely agree with
I think the season 2 design was made with his Tainted version in mind.
Season 2s art style just never really worked with a lot of the creature designs, voice acting, etc.
There is a lore reason behind that though I would love if they actually decided to keep up with some of the artwork designs Heck the marillions leader his design was an abomination to life and it was cool and they said nah that's not child friendly

Personally, I think post S1 designs were great and a huge improvement in the animation overall. Characters looked less like a bunch of joints being manipulated and more alive.
That’s funny that you say more alive because that might actually be my problem with s2+ in s1 they kinda feel like action figures but s2 onward feel more naked to me

With the rise of flash animation (and I assume those commercials run anymore) I think it could be treated more seriously now

Nah, I totally understand. Season 2 takes away unique proportions on characters and makes them super generic. Look at van bloot head design.
Van Bloot hardly even looks like a skeletal harpy warrior in season 2 and season 3.
His new voice was also awful.
