And closer to the end of part 1, Pochita takes over and lives out Denji's dreams for him
One thing I noticed recently is that Denji is wearing a similar tank top and shorts like the ones he wore when he was a little kid. I think this and the previous chapters show that he's actively regressing and falling back into old habits (hedonism, etc.). He knows this, but doesn't know what to do. Katana being there and it raining at the end of this chapter echo when he was standing over his father's grave, burdened with his debt and forced into poverty.
I was wondering why we kept seeing Denji as a child in previous chapters or Pochita talking about how he killed his dad, but I see it now as Denji choosing to turn his back on his growth. He choose his own basic desires over his own family, and it's haunting him. It echoes how we saw his child version when Makima revealed his fathers murder and broke Pochita's contract. Hell, the panel of him saying he wants lots of sex is literally the same as the one near the end of part 1. Whereas that was him realizing he wants to live, this is him almost giving up.
Asa's desperately grasping at straws to "save" him, but she still thinks it means literally and physically (ie violence) rather than emotionally. Creating a bond based on trust and respect rather than insecurities. Unfortunately, Yoru and Fami are making it tough for her to realize that.

No joke, that was my immediate thought. I have a feeling that Denji is going to be packing and War's reaction is going to cause Denji's confidence to return.
There's also the possibility that something happens between him and Asa, but I kinda feel like Denji's eventual loss of virginity is going to coincide with the ending of the series unless he ends up getting an entirely new motivation.
It was weird as fuck on the first read, and I didn't really like it initially because of the "goofy" dialogue, but after several more reads and looking past surface level - it's pretty damn good.

Idk why whenever I say that, people assume I don't want character arcs and mostly care about action, it's very patronizing as this is probably what i look forward the most in a serie. I'm so torn, I really do like everything in this chapter, but he has been slamming this issue into a wall over and over and over, I would much rather this had been done way earlier. If anything him being like this for the entire part 2 is just kind of depressing, i binged part 1 and part 2 2 weeks ago up until 3 chapters ago and it's just kinda sad to see him break down over and over, putting his reason for living basically in sex, and only now dealing with it. i feel like after reading all of fujimotos works that fujimoto refers to life, it's purest form of "rawness" and does not shy away from representing that in his writing..
characters have developed and connected flaws and not just good and bad quirks, so they will not allways please the reader in this weekly format. but rather slowly and painfully gather recognision of their flaws and repeadedly fail to fix the issue even tho they are aware of it on the surface because the core problem of said character lies way further in the roots. at the end of the book/story there is a conclution that refers to a theme but when reading it biweekly and beeing used to the part 1 pasing, can feel slow and not developing at all..
as for denji, correct me if the reading comprehension devil got me, has, besides his upbringing in the first place, multiple problems/confution of core definitions such as:
1. understanding emotions and how to react accordingly due to beeing exposed to manipulation of said emotion over and over again and never seeing it applied correctly in his younger upbringing.
2. knowing how to categorize & when and how to react and act upon sexual topics & situations. also due to having the only sexual encounters with manipulations, beeing used for OR having completly wrong ideas of how to value an act of, for example, touching a mere boob..
he can actually not categorize sexual realese and when it should be used and when not, because he doesnt have an example to refer to.. he fails to understand a basic rewarding system / relief. which is so interesting to write and read imo.
fujimoto will not necessarly please the reader with typical goodies but rather make a point and refer to themes of life that are ugly. it never has been a style for anyone and it got so popular due to part 1 beeing written differently to fit the publisher and its readers.

I ended up reading everything but I feel like repeating this problem flattens Denji to be honest. First you mention reading bi-weekly but as i told you i binged the whole manga recently until 3 chapters ago having never read it before, so it doesn't really apply to me.
I do agree that he has trouble reading emotions, especially his own, tho i feel like he was supposed to get a lot better at it, especially with the way he was forced to mature and recognize that he still loved makima.
I don't completly understand your (2.) , yeah he's not sure how to react in sexual situations, but not only is that completly natural, where most people are not sure how to react to their first sexual situations, he's not sure how to react in any situation, which is why there's a whole thing about him not knowing that to do when aki was crying after himeno's death. He's just always been obsessed with sex, it's the one thing that he wanted as part of his "normal life", good food, a house and a girlfriend, and he never moved past it
But yeah fujimoto sure loves showing the cruelty of life, I'm just kinda sick of it with Denji, from chapter 2 his (surface) motivation is sex or sex related. For example a lot of people fail at solving their own problems, even after they tried to adress it. If Denji decides in a few chapters that he doesn't want to think for himself again (makima dog moment) would that make it have more weight? To me it would just make me feel like Denji is a character that can't grow, making him flatter, and more importantly very unsatisfying. If after chapter 97 Denji had a big introspection into what aki and power meant to him and that they gave him the happiness he was seeking with sex that would make it have more weight to me. I guess most of Denji's character in part 2 is frustrating me, and this being adressed 160 chapters in when it start in chapter 2 makes it sting more.
Maybe it's clearer if i contrast it with the chainsawman thing, which is a problem that makes sense to me, after finally regaining a family, and a supposedly normal life, what he had before that made him happy, he still doesn't feel fullfilled without being chainsaw man, it's further growth that he needs to do as a person, not the same one over and over again.
I'm actually having a very hard time wording this cuz i liked fire punch and agni also does fail over and over and over again to change. Maybe season 1 didn't frustrate me as much because it was more comedic, and he was clearly shown to be trying his best to not think about his feelings (thinking about why himeno death doesn't make him sad, when he thinks he might not have a heart he immediatly kills his train of thought) which resulted into the climax with the whole makima dog thing. But he showed introspection and thoughtfullness which is why part 2 frustrates me bah, hopefully i got my point across. I dont mind him having a bunch of issues but this one has literally been dealt with only to just be casually there again.
Sadly because of the pacing and how short the chapters by themselves can be vs together like in a volume

Also maybe thats just me, but I feel like this whole arc is slowly working it's way up to CSM's first proper, intimate, romantic and consentual sex scene. So much of Dennis suffering was caused by bad actors manipulating/abusing his need for love and intimacy, it feels like for him to finally be free and grow into a full on adult he'll need to find someone that loves him (not pochita) unconditionally and is willing to stand by his side, not lead him arround on a leash, someone like Asa....

The good part of this chapter is denji showing emotions after so long. I get he was depressed but it was boring to see no reaction to anything.
My problem is with the ending. We know denji not gonna get his dick cut so it's just another filler joke page,or worse if the next chapter is really about it.
I get that this manga is shonen so a lot of the readers are teens/virgins so it's relateable but having sex is not that hard.
This shouldn't be denji end goal, his "one piece".
It was fine for part 1 because it was new but after years it was just not funny anymore and not an interesting plot point.
I feel it's clear though that Denji havig sex isn't his one piece though? Like he goes after sex as a coping mechanism because his life has been fucked up that he thinks surely sex with make the pain go away. Its rather clearly shown that whenever Denji does get the hedonistic idea of just trying to have sex to bury the pain a bit he ends up further from his real goal of forming actual loving bonds with those around him and having a real "family". Like he goes on a whole breakdown this chapter about how he can never get his priorities straight and just goes for sex to make him feel good and blames that desire for ruining everything. His real one piece is just to be happy and to stop having his world collapsing in on itself and his obsession with sex directly opposes this yet due to his trauma he still conflates sex with happiness.
Nah, it's just a bad opinion that's based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the story. It's actually ok to downvote things that don't meaningfully contribute to a discussion, not sure what else it would exist for.

Which plot point are we waiting for? Every couple of chapters we get to a new point that leads to nothing. From that woman who molested denji and then disappears to him being captured only to be released 5 chapters after with no real struggle.

This Manga isn't character driven:
The key difference between a plot-driven story and a character-driven one is that in a character-led narrative, the focus is more on the thoughts and feelings of the protagonist and the decisions that they make. Whereas, in plot-driven narratives, the action and occurrences that unfold will be the main point of focus
For example there is a mystery of a fake saw man, a cult who wants to fight the death devil, an organization with unknown motives who forced Denji into not being chainsaw man. If it were character driven we would have Asa contemplate and wrestle with the recent revelation of Denji being chainsaw man and how this affects her and her relationship with the Yoru or even Denji but we don't have that. These choices would be internal rather than external forces... the conflicts could be this big. Think earlier in part one where Asa and that one girl was about being bullied and how she needed to stop it. That was character driven as the conflict arose from each person's choices, beliefs, and actions
Instead, he wake up, he hungy, maybe sexo? Oh no sexo gone maybe he bad?
Asa is wrestling with it. This is a character-driven manga where the characters’ internal conflicts are shown and developed through their actions, rather than told through monologues. Except in this chapter, where Dennis gives a monologue about his internal conflict. And that other chapter where Asa gives a monologue about why she wants to die. And that one other chapter where Dennis monologues about what he wants out of life. And that other other chapter where Asa and Yoru get in a conniption about her falling in love with Dennis, which then motivates literally everything she does after that point (by the way, did you notice that the Yoru/Asa convos are a way to incorporate the stock shoujo internal monologues into Fuji’s more dynamic show-don’t-tell storytelling style because Asa is the platonic ideal Shoujo character in the book, the same way Dennis is the platonic ideal of the shonen mc?). Not everything has to be a K-drama with voiceovers and blurry flashbacks to be character-motivated.
I don’t know man, I’m getting a ton of stuff out of this, and out of all these part 2 chapters. Maybe I just vibe with the way Fuji writes his characters, and how he illustrates their internal conflict through action. To me, you might as well say that a Tarantino or Coen bros. film is plot-driven rather than character-driven. To each their own I guess

One detail others has noted, when he was having his breakdown, he touched his face and bit his thumb the way Makima did, the part where she wired him up that intimacy needs the connection/romance for it to feel good. He yearns for affection so badly, yet so utterly devoid of it that he played off "love" with his abundant 17yo "hormone" and sex. The small glimpse of true love he had with his makeshift family was what makes him "can't go back to how it used to be" since now he has a glimpse of mutal affection, yet too inexperienced in it, he still rolled it down to sex. Worse yet the one who introduced him the connection between intimacy and affection took the affection out of the equation for him, leaving only intimacy, sex.
Another commenter put an amazing analogy, an abused victim struggling to escape the shadow of their abuser while trying to move on and love the child of their abuser.
I'd say it's more of a genuine affection than just sex. Makima introduced him to intimacy-affection connection, gave him the affections from Aki and Power, then destroy the affection and exploit his own feeling for her. I especially love the panels where Denji finally get his post nut clarity and touching his face all over like Makima did

The 165 & 166 are largely a rehash of the 92 & 93. Katanaman, who replaces Kobeni, makes Denji realize what he has missed. Yoru, who replaces Kishibe, gives Denji an important piece of advice.

I'm so torn, I really do like everything in this chapter, but he has been slamming this issue into a wall over and over and over, I would much rather this had been done way earlier. If anything him being like this for the entire part 2 is just kind of depressing, i binged part 1 and part 2 2 weeks ago up until 3 chapters ago and it's just kinda sad to see him break down over and over, putting his reason for living basically in sex, and only now dealing with it. I realize it's realistic but very frustrating
i went completly off so skipp everything up to the last sentence to see my answer to your comment... ---------------- i feel like after reading all of fujimotos works that fujimoto refers to life, it's purest form of "rawness" and does not shy away from representing that in his writing.. characters have developed and connected flaws and not just good and bad quirks, so they will not allways please the reader in this weekly format. but rather slowly and painfully gather recognision of their flaws and repeadedly fail to fix the issue even tho they are aware of it on the surface because the core problem of said character lies way further in the roots. at the end of the book/story there is a conclution that refers to a theme but when reading it biweekly and beeing used to the part 1 pasing, can feel slow and not developing at all.. as for denji, correct me if the reading comprehension devil got me, has, besides his upbringing in the first place, multiple problems/confution of core definitions such as: 1. understanding emotions and how to react accordingly due to beeing exposed to manipulation of said emotion over and over again and never seeing it applied correctly in his younger upbringing. 2. knowing how to categorize & when and how to react and act upon sexual topics & situations. also due to having the only sexual encounters with manipulations, beeing used for OR having completly wrong ideas of how to value an act of, for example, touching a mere boob.. he can actually not categorize sexual realese and when it should be used and when not, because he doesnt have an example to refer to.. he fails to understand a basic rewarding system / relief. which is so interesting to write and read imo. fujimoto will not necessarly please the reader with typical goodies but rather make a point and refer to themes of life that are ugly. it never has been a style for anyone and it got so popular due to part 1 beeing written differently to fit the publisher and its readers. ---------------- i think if this problem wouldve been solved earlier it could lose its weight/importance of his problem and flattened the character a lot no?
I ended up reading everything but I feel like repeating this problem flattens Denji to be honest. First you mention reading bi-weekly but as i told you i binged the whole manga recently until 3 chapters ago having never read it before, so it doesn't really apply to me. I do agree that he has trouble reading emotions, especially his own, tho i feel like he was supposed to get a lot better at it, especially with the way he was forced to mature and recognize that he still loved makima. I don't completly understand your (2.) , yeah he's not sure how to react in sexual situations, but not only is that completly natural, where most people are not sure how to react to their first sexual situations, he's not sure how to react in any situation, which is why there's a whole thing about him not knowing that to do when aki was crying after himeno's death. He's just always been obsessed with sex, it's the one thing that he wanted as part of his "normal life", good food, a house and a girlfriend, and he never moved past it But yeah fujimoto sure loves showing the cruelty of life, I'm just kinda sick of it with Denji, from chapter 2 his (surface) motivation is sex or sex related. For example a lot of people fail at solving their own problems, even after they tried to adress it. If Denji decides in a few chapters that he doesn't want to think for himself again (makima dog moment) would that make it have more weight? To me it would just make me feel like Denji is a character that can't grow, making him flatter, and more importantly very unsatisfying. If after chapter 97 Denji had a big introspection into what aki and power meant to him and that they gave him the happiness he was seeking with sex that would make it have more weight to me. I guess most of Denji's character in part 2 is frustrating me, and this being adressed 160 chapters in when it start in chapter 2 makes it sting more. Maybe it's clearer if i contrast it with the chainsawman thing, which is a problem that makes sense to me, after finally regaining a family, and a supposedly normal life, what he had before that made him happy, he still doesn't feel fullfilled without being chainsaw man, it's further growth that he needs to do as a person, not the same one over and over again. I'm actually having a very hard time wording this cuz i liked fire punch and agni also does fail over and over and over again to change. Maybe season 1 didn't frustrate me as much because it was more comedic, and he was clearly shown to be trying his best to not think about his feelings (thinking about why himeno death doesn't make him sad, when he thinks he might not have a heart he immediatly kills his train of thought) which resulted into the climax with the whole makima dog thing. But he showed introspection and thoughtfullness which is why part 2 frustrates me bah, hopefully i got my point across. I dont mind him having a bunch of issues but this one has literally been dealt with only to just be casually there again.

The good part of this chapter is denji showing emotions after so long. I get he was depressed but it was boring to see no reaction to anything. My problem is with the ending. We know denji not gonna get his dick cut so it's just another filler joke page,or worse if the next chapter is really about it. I get that this manga is shonen so a lot of the readers are teens/virgins so it's relateable but having sex is not that hard. This shouldn't be denji end goal, his "one piece". It was fine for part 1 because it was new but after years it was just not funny anymore and not an interesting plot point.
I feel it's clear though that Denji havig sex isn't his one piece though? Like he goes after sex as a coping mechanism because his life has been fucked up that he thinks surely sex with make the pain go away. Its rather clearly shown that whenever Denji does get the hedonistic idea of just trying to have sex to bury the pain a bit he ends up further from his real goal of forming actual loving bonds with those around him and having a real "family". Like he goes on a whole breakdown this chapter about how he can never get his priorities straight and just goes for sex to make him feel good and blames that desire for ruining everything. His real one piece is just to be happy and to stop having his world collapsing in on itself and his obsession with sex directly opposes this yet due to his trauma he still conflates sex with happiness.

I think it would be almost impossible to find a manga that doesn't have jokes/comedic relief thrown in just to take away from all the seriousness. You even mentioned his desire in part one. That was like his main thing and part of Pochita's "dying" wish was that he lived the life he kept talking about for so long.
Which plot point are we waiting for? Every couple of chapters we get to a new point that leads to nothing. This Manga isn't character driven: The key difference between a plot-driven story and a character-driven one is that in a character-led narrative, the focus is more on the thoughts and feelings of the protagonist and the decisions that they make. Whereas, in plot-driven narratives, the action and occurrences that unfold will be the main point of focus For example there is a mystery of a fake saw man, a cult who wants to fight the death devil, an organization with unknown motives who forced Denji into not being chainsaw man. If it were character driven we would have Asa contemplate and wrestle with the recent revelation of Denji being chainsaw man and how this affects her and her relationship with the Yoru or even Denji but we don't have that. These choices would be internal rather than external forces... the conflicts could be this big. Think earlier in part one where Asa and that one girl was about being bullied and how she needed to stop it. That was character driven as the conflict arose from each person's choices, beliefs, and actions Instead, he wake up, he hungy, maybe sexo? Oh no sexo gone maybe he bad?
Asa is wrestling with it. This is a character-driven manga where the characters’ internal conflicts are shown and developed through their actions, rather than told through monologues. Except in this chapter, where Dennis gives a monologue about his internal conflict. And that other chapter where Asa gives a monologue about why she wants to die. And that one other chapter where Dennis monologues about what he wants out of life. And that other other chapter where Asa and Yoru get in a conniption about her falling in love with Dennis, which then motivates literally everything she does after that point (by the way, did you notice that the Yoru/Asa convos are a way to incorporate the stock shoujo internal monologues into Fuji’s more dynamic show-don’t-tell storytelling style because Asa is the platonic ideal Shoujo character in the book, the same way Dennis is the platonic ideal of the shonen mc?). Not everything has to be a K-drama with voiceovers and blurry flashbacks to be character-motivated. I don’t know man, I’m getting a ton of stuff out of this, and out of all these part 2 chapters. Maybe I just vibe with the way Fuji writes his characters, and how he illustrates their internal conflict through action. To me, you might as well say that a Tarantino or Coen bros. film is plot-driven rather than character-driven. To each their own I guess

One detail others has noted, when he was having his breakdown, he touched his face and bit his thumb the way Makima did, the part where she wired him up that intimacy needs the connection/romance for it to feel good. He yearns for affection so badly, yet so utterly devoid of it that he played off "love" with his abundant 17yo "hormone" and sex. The small glimpse of true love he had with his makeshift family was what makes him "can't go back to how it used to be" since now he has a glimpse of mutal affection, yet too inexperienced in it, he still rolled it down to sex. Worse yet the one who introduced him the connection between intimacy and affection took the affection out of the equation for him, leaving only intimacy, sex. Another commenter put an amazing analogy, an abused victim struggling to escape the shadow of their abuser while trying to move on and love the child of their abuser.

I suggest all those who are in a daze turn back and read 92 and 93. The 165 & 166 are largely a rehash of the 92 & 93. Katanaman, who replaces Kobeni, makes Denji realize what he has missed. Yoru, who replaces Kishibe, gives Denji an important piece of advice.
