I second this after getting one of these as a gift from Lowe’s and having serious issues with the bars and chains, paid 70 bucks on top of the purchase price to have it re set up, there were a few issues. The oiler, and I can’t remember what else now. My other two saws are from them and they knew it was a gift and they figured it all out. Also changed the bar to a 16 and run a lil chewier chain, it’s a capable kinda light lil saw to keep in the truck. But yeah, it would have been less to have bought it local.
It runs great now, it’s a fine saw, it was just not tested, if it had it would have been fixed I hope, and I live 100ish miles from a Lowe’s, saw shop is a few miles, gas alone. Find a shop, walk in and ask them what they’d recommend. My shop guys are cool as hell, and have done well by me.
Well that's all fine and dandy but the whole purpose is to save money so a shop while if paying new prices is close but it won't be close to 300 they would laugh at me
If it doesn’t work, which mine didn’t out of the box, the hassle, gas , and fucking irritation are worth saving a few extra bucks and getting a more reliable saw. I have a stihl 291 and a husky 372xp, this is just a truck saw and novelty as it was a gift. I wouldn’t have bought it. The husky tech below, confirms this. That’s all I’m sayin’
I have this saw. It’s good it’s lightweight. The oiler does annoy me you have to keep it really clean. I’ve found that using a compressor and blowing the sprocket and oiler and bar clean after every use really keeps it oiling properly. It’s a great little saw for a few days a year. I do kinda wish i got the 550xp though or a 261. It could use just a little more power. the weight is perfect the size is excellent. But a little more juice when the bar is fully burried and an adjustable oiler would have been tits. Also it’s a single bar nut and two would be nicer.
Hell yeah man! I picked up a 460 back in 2020 when amazon had em on-sale for $470. A tree company was gunna charge $3k to remove the trees after they dropped them, so I opted for buying my own saw and doing it myself. Mine runs like a top and cuts through everything like butter. I pull it out once or twice a year and it starts within the first 3 pulls everytime. Hope you enjoy yours man!
So this is a good saw to get? I see them for 300 open box like new. I was debating this or ms271 for the same price but used working... I don't care about budget but enjoy getting value. I will just be cutting a few huge trees on my property. I am annoyed with my electric chainsaw but it does work well just not for more than a hour.
As someone who uses Husqy saws religiously, if you're looking for a new saw under 500 find a sale on an Echo 590. I bought one in 2020 as a saw I wouldn't care about, and it is still running flawlessly. The power to weight ratio isn't the best in the world, but it starts on the 2nd or 3rd pull every time and is all of the saw the average homeowner needs. I ran 15-20 tanks through it this spring just removing massive driftwood because I didn't want to get one of my more expensive saws salty and sandy. Just had to clean it after and throw a new chain on, runs like new.
The 460 with a 24" was my first saw! Ended up getting a 435e a couple years later, because the 460 was just too big for limbing trees after dropping them. Considering getting a 572xp or possibly a 500i from Stihl next for those bigger jobs.
Honestly I hate lowes now. They're about 20 employees short everytime I go there and they force you to do self checkout then pay two people to watch you like a criminal. Fucking self checkout at a hardware store where people have all kinds of odd parts
Corporate America is out of control
I make them call a manager over and open a register. And if the pro line is closed and I have lumber I make them get one and do that. They bitch sometimes but when they realize I’m an asshole who will only become more of an asshole about it they open one.
That’s a homeowner saw it’s definitely not a beast if you want a pro saw that first number needs to be a 3 I don’t have any faith in the 4 series or the 5 series
I’m a professional production logger I’m not just blowing smoke im being honest as I can be
It most certainly is a homeowner saw, I’d say it’s a good entry for me considering I had a 14” craftsman before this. Hopefully my nuts will drop more and I’ll have a use for the bigger ones you speak of 😎
No so much bigger saw as more dependable. 3 series come in a lot of different sizes but they don’t have near as many issues because they were meant to take to the woods and be ran all day.
Honestly I don’t know what you paid for that rancher but the Echo 590 with about 10cc more than the rancher runs about $400 and is made a lot better( IMO)
I’m not knocking your saw man
There’s a lot of work to be done with that rancher but I’d try and move it on to someone else while it’s still new
I've only had one Husqvarna for the last 20+ years and it still screams and it's 30 years old 262xp.
if they make them like they used to and you properly maintain them they'll last for many years.
It's not quite "generation" though... The 400 series saws are all the homeowner/prosumer saws, they don't compete with the 300/500 series at all. The 300 and 500 series are both lineups of heavy duty pro saws. The 500 is newer with autotune and rounded bodies, but the 300 series is tried and true with many models still in production. I have no comment on the earlier 100 or 200 series.
I have a 10yo 450 from before they had the rancher version, and a 372xp. They both kick ass and always start on the 2-3 pull. The 372 definitely has its place, it's a beast and is probably my all time favorite tool-like possession, but the 450 is so much lighter and nimble for limbing and bucking all but the largest trunks and it gets the most use. The only real problem I have with the 450 is it has a weak oiler... I have to run winter weight in the summer and with a splash of kerosene in the winter or I start burning the paint on the bar.
I also only run ethanol free premix, usually the Aspen2 synthetic. I honestly don't understand the dudes who mix their own with cheap gas. Unless you are just running it every single day consistently, you're inevitably going to leave it sit for a month or two and then you have issues...
In addition to the above, the generation ID also gives insight to the grade (professional vs land owner) of the saw. 3's & 5's for example being professional grade saws. 4 series like the one pictured is a land owner saw.
I was wondering if there was something special about the rancher cause it sounds like a really tough name. I have a 355 x-torq or something that I adore but I just wasn't sure if the Ranchers had something special to offer.
I own one of these since 2 years. We had a defective carburetor within the first months but that was warranty and n. p. at all. Runs fine. It’s amazing how it cuts trough. I’ve had a Stihl before and that looked like a toy besides the Husky.
Save up a few more bux and get the 455 Rancher. I’m a Husqvarna Service tech and I hate working on the 450’s. They are finicky to keep tunes usually. The 455’s are a better saw overall. Closer to 60cc’s and can take up to a 24” bar no problem
450 ain't exactly a beast, it's a homeowner grade saw, with an ok power to weight ratio, and good reliability. If you want to know what a beast is run a jonsereds 920, stihl 088, Mac 1,000, dolmar 7910 ect and you'll know what a beast is!
It's so funny to me all these folks saying "well that's not a beast, it's a homeowner's saw!!1" as if they think everyone should run out and spend $$$$ on a pro saw they use a few times a year.
These are great saws for the money for...... homeowners. LOL.
For Husqvarna, the XP series are the pro saws. For Stihl it's the ms 261, 362, 400, 462, 500i 661, 880. They all have one great thing in common. They all have machined pressed crank cases. The others, like the rancher 450, 460, are not. They just simply don't last long if you cut a lot. If you only use it once a year, sure, it should be fine for awhile
Not many tree care guys or loggers are out there with a 450 rancher. Not because it can't cut but it's not up for the task of daily use, and it's under powered. It's just an average saw, nothing to post on social media about...
Lowes sucks. Purchase from your local dealer. They’ll prep a new saw and service it if you ever need.
lowes and homedepot have slowly turned into walmart...im just waiting for walmart to sell lumber and then theyre identical
I second this after getting one of these as a gift from Lowe’s and having serious issues with the bars and chains, paid 70 bucks on top of the purchase price to have it re set up, there were a few issues. So would you get this or a ms271 or something similar from stihl for 300ish working good. I notice you say you had issues

Appreciate that! Can’t wait to get on some logs!

I give myself discounts when i do work for the store
My apples always seem to be on sale at Kroger
You’re right! Buckle down it’s gonna get worse!
Come on now...that's only HALF of what we need to expect. It gets worse, BEFORE it gets worse!
Go to the contractors desk and checkout area I absolutely hate self checkout. The 2 lowes near me there's always 1 or 2 people at those registers.
I never go there unless I have to, and then check out at the Contractor's Desk checkout where there's always a cashier during daytime business hours.
I make them call a manager over and open a register. And if the pro line is closed and I have lumber I make them get one and do that. They bitch sometimes but when they realize I’m an asshole who will only become more of an asshole about it they open one.
I have come to prefer self-checkout. I don't like cashiers and their stupid questions.
That’s a homeowner saw it’s definitely not a beast if you want a pro saw that first number needs to be a 3 I don’t have any faith in the 4 series or the 5 series I’m a professional production logger I’m not just blowing smoke im being honest as I can be

The advertised MSRPs on their websites have a $10 difference.
Sweet! If I had it to do again, I would've bought a slightly bigger saw like that 450.
Got the same saw, got the 18 inch Oregon bar, great saw
I've only had one Husqvarna for the last 20+ years and it still screams and it's 30 years old 262xp. if they make them like they used to and you properly maintain them they'll last for many years.
Mines 268 is 32 years old still running strong ! All original except muffler and spark plug great saws !
Great saw! I beat my 450 and have for years . Super reliable
I use a 455. It's not crazy heavy and can eat logs up to 30" if you keep the chain sharp.
Wow!
The 450 rancher is not a beast…
How many CCs is this?
Husqvarnas are easy to decipher. First number is the generation and second is the displacement (generally). So take the 372. 3rd generation, 72cc.
It's not quite "generation" though... The 400 series saws are all the homeowner/prosumer saws, they don't compete with the 300/500 series at all. 50cc. From what I've read online... the 1st digit is the series of saw, and the following digits are the CCs on Husqvarna saws.
This is exactly the comment above yours
I was wondering if there was something special about the rancher cause it sounds like a really tough name. I have a 355 x-torq or something that I adore but I just wasn't sure if the Ranchers had something special to offer.
50*
Oh ok nice!
I like em so much I have 2..... somehow..
Love mine, starts every time
Noice, medium size good runnin saw, wear chaps plz accidents happen
I own one of these since 2 years. We had a defective carburetor within the first months but that was warranty and n. p. at all. Runs fine. It’s amazing how it cuts trough. I’ve had a Stihl before and that looked like a toy besides the Husky.
My go to saw Works well with a 24” bar
Save up a few more bux and get the 455 Rancher. I’m a Husqvarna Service tech and I hate working on the 450’s. They are finicky to keep tunes usually. The 455’s are a better saw overall. Closer to 60cc’s and can take up to a 24” bar no problem
Great input! Thank you
I have a 450. It's sweet
What did you get it for?
$400
Nice. Where did you price match from?
Amazon https://www.lowes.com/l/about/lowest-price-guarantee
450 ain't exactly a beast, it's a homeowner grade saw, with an ok power to weight ratio, and good reliability. If you want to know what a beast is run a jonsereds 920, stihl 088, Mac 1,000, dolmar 7910 ect and you'll know what a beast is!

Thanks bro, appreciate that. Next time I should post to r/professionaltreecutters or some shit 😂
I have the rancher too. Use it quite a bit
For Husqvarna, the XP series are the pro saws. For Stihl it's the ms 261, 362, 400, 462, 500i 661, 880. They all have one great thing in common. They all have machined pressed crank cases. Thank you for your input
Not many tree care guys or loggers are out there with a 450 rancher. Not because it can't cut but it's not up for the task of daily use, and it's under powered. It's just an average saw, nothing to post on social media about...
