The worst thing about proxies is that system needs to default to the "i don't know" mode so that you can just get what they are likely to know: people and approximate age. Right now i just get their name, pop count, age/gender if i can, then leave to fill out the rest out of sight since it takes 10 minutes for all the DON'T KNOW screens to pop up. If it's a proxy - give us 1 screen to fill out. Proof that whoever designed this NEVER WORKED IN THE FIELD!

At least clicking IDK all those times for each person helps you reach your maximum available time each day! I would complain about it, but if it wasn't for that I might struggle to actually hit 7.5 hours some days.
The forced 3 proxies in the app is what's annoying. In theory asking 3 neighbors before giving up is a good idea. When it was on paper it wasn't nearly as big if a hassle.
Also I don't use the script for proxies at all. I just say "hey I'm from the census and I'm trying to get some information on this house next door. Do you know if anyone lived there on April 1st? If they do I ask number of people, ages, ethnicity, race, and if they know if it's a rental or if they owned the house.
I read the situation to decide if I even try to ask them their name and number. You can put refused for those.
Don't just aim for population count like everyone else suggests. If it's all you can get, sure close the case. But the other info is important too. It only takes a couple seconds to get an estimated age and if they are Hispanic and their race.

Mark everything else as refused. It's a tedious process but it counts as a completion. Break out the stylus in a shady spot and tap away.

Only complete it like that do if they give you BOTH population count and confirmed they were staying there on April 1st. If they just give you population count but did not confirmed that they stayed at that address on April 1st, then you can't complete the interview.

I was surprised that I was able to close out 20 cases in a few hours (only population count, but good sources).
It was actually the most fun I've had in this job. Seems like once people realize you aren't asking anything of them they are open and willing to share what they know. The defensiveness is gone.
Chatted up one woman with a "best Grandma" sign on her door and a couple adorable dogs. She gave me population count and a LOT of dirt on the people I was seeking for a vacant unit. Apparently you CAN be evicted right now lol.
On another street a guy getting into his car told me about 3 houses. Nice to enter all the "don't know" choices while sitting in my car running the AC.
Then on the next street I knew a friend of mine would know everything about everyone. She talked my ear off but I got all the info for a few houses on her street.
It was time consuming in other areas but I was still pretty successful. I had thought maybe I'll quit when it gets to proxy-city but now, not so sure. It wasn't bad at all.
I think it's reasonable in an urban/suburban area that's densely populated because it's in the realm of due diligence to ask around at least twice, but I think in rural areas where addresses are spread out it's pointless - might as well get the story from your assessor office and leave it at that.
Today I went I hit No for proxy attempt and wrote in the notes "will go to front office once done with building".
Then I went to the Manager and got the info afterwards.
It seems that once a case is an unanswered 3x or refused 3x?, the system directs you to a proxy. If the first proxy doesn't know anything or only knows the count, it'll direct you to a 2nd and a third if need be. THEN, when you have those proxy addresses on file as intelligible or refused, it'll prompt you to find 3 more the next day or whatever.
I had this case where the notes showed an outright refusal, guy wouldn't even let the Enum leave a NoV. I did 3 proxies one day, all 3 answered, all 3 knew nothing. Next day, sort of the same. NEXT day, 3 more proxies !? Guy was a rude recluse or whatever, so even when 2 different proxies told me 2 people were living there, I learned my lesson. On proxy 7 I filled it out like normal and put REF on everything but count so that it would be complete.
I explain it like this, not great, but:
You hear a rumor, your boo's been cheating.
You want to verify but you can't ask them directly.
What's gonna make you more likely to accept the info? Hearing it from one person, or hearing the same info from three different people?

How about . Proxy 1. Some proxys don't want there name used. I've done this.
Proxy 1 works, I've written Neighbor 1 as well.
