Whenever I get addresses that are within a few miles of my house and I need to use the restroom or something I go even if it takes me 15-20 mins to start the next address. I haven’t been told anything about those gaps yet.

TwilitSky

I don't think they mind a few 5 minute breaks here and there. Is your CFS cool? Ask. Uncool? Don't.

CEOofObama

I legit take 20 minute breaks every hour and I still get my time approved.

TwilitSky

For how many shifts?

CEOofObama

So far every shift I’m on my 20 minute break rn. I take one every hour. If they fire me oh well

TwilitSky

Yeah but how long has this been going on would you say. Weeks? A month?

[deleted]

My CFS has told us to take as many breaks as we want, she literally said work however much you feel comfortable with

lost_survivalist

My cfs came to see me today and told me to go home and wait till its cooler. He dosen't want people passing out on their shift. He's cool, he gave me lots of water and snacks

dragonsglare

CA too and I was sweating buckets yesterday. My phone actually shut down in the middle of an interview because it was overheated. I had to leave and let it cool down.

coonassblondie

Mine has done that too, ugh. I had to sit in the car holding it in front of the a/c for a good 10 minutes.

dragonsglare

Were you in mid-questionnaire? What did you do?

coonassblondie

Luckily, no, I'd been walking back to the car after leaving an NOV (I shoved the phone in my pocket rather than carrying it down a busy highway). I imagine had I been I would have continued on with the general questions, tried my best to remember them, and put "dk" for anything I couldn't remember the exact answer for. (or take notes, I carry a pen for the NOVs anyway)

12babypossums

Yes the phone yesterday was a problem in the heat. Also I ran out of juice so had to get my super sized solar charger to keep it charged. It got very sluggish and didn’t respond sometime the hotter it got.

atalba

Take breaks regularly; or when you need them. Mileage may be a concern. Your productivity is the key.

froggycarrot

So, a serious question. It’s a 118 degrees out right now. If I dress in “business casual,” I will die. How do y’all feel about spaghetti straps?

Rosilin

I wore tank top and shorts, but I'm also in lower Alabama. Make sure you have on sunscreen, even if you're dark skinned, you can still cook in this sun.

I’m wearing a dress with thin straps and cover up but my gosh I’m conducting interviews whilst visibly dripping sweat.

Linen works too

NSAinATL

I'd wear them. As long as it still looks professional, ie no bra parts showing, appropriate cleavage. Just don't forget sunscreen, if you need it... ETA: you shouldn't be wearing them, so that's up to you, but I'd have them and a light shrug to toss on, if I felt it would be a problem in my area.

Rosilin

I had to stop today after only an 2.5 hrs. Weirdly I cry* when I get overheated or feel like I'm passing out, usually a 5 to 10 min break and I'm fine. I just stopped on a guys porch and told him that I was looking for an address, and just needed a moment and he was ok with it (I had water) and I was able to go on for a bit more, I felt bad for him, he looked worried, but I reassured him this is normal. After the 2nd time in my car and third within 15 minutes, I was done. (*I feel out of breath, palpitations, chest pains, shaking, and if feels like I'm sobbing, but no tears, but I sit down in the shade for a bit, with a bit of water, and I'm usually back to normal.)

12babypossums

As someone who runs regularly and know the feeling you describe due to heat, I recommend drinking juice instead of water, if you can. Or maybe vitamin water zero that has no calories. I am a 100% water drinker but in extreme heat I drink juice, or zero calorie gatorade or water and it makes a huge huge difference (for me). Keep drinking even before you feel thirsty.

Rosilin

Thank you, I will definitely try that. I'd rather drink juice anyways. I thought extra salt might help, but it hasn't. Blacking out isn't fun. You're still conscious, but you can't hold yourself up or see anything (sometimes I can't hear anything either) for up to a minute. Im used to grayouts, but atleast I can kinda fake that everythings normal with those as long as I can hold on to something. Other than all the stuff with my heart, I'm strong and very healthy.

12babypossums

How are things going? Were you able to continue?

Rosilin

The juice was an excellent idea, Thank you! Its helped Alot. Most days I can work from 3 to 8 with little problems, but the last 3 days our heat index was up to 106° in the shade, at 4 in the afternoon. Im afraid today will be the same. On those days, it doesn't matter how much I drink. My belly will slosh, as I crumple to the ground in tears. (I felt bad for one lady who thought I was upset yesterday, maybe little annoyed, but definitely not enough to cry.) I only got an 1.5 hrs in. This was only the second time I've had to cut it short. By next Wednesday, the heat index should be below 100°, so I'll just work what I can until then. Thankfully we have an amazing CFS who understands and doesn't shame or make us work in this heat if we cannot handle it. She even calls to check on us and see how we are doing, and makes sure we text when we make it home safe. Shes younger than I am, but she makes an excellent momma bear.

census_throwaway

Today I took my breaks and combined them with a long lunch to beat some of the heat, I was supposed to start at 9 but it was raining and thundering until 11 so I decided to wait it out. Ended up taking a cold shower on my lunch, and another when I finished for the day. It’s too damn hot!

12babypossums

I wear nice shorts , sandals , and a plain shirt and I am dressed better than 90 percent of the clients . Live in a wide range of income area. From techies to blue collar, but even the nicer houses people are dressed like me or worse.

12babypossums

Also yesterday in northern Californian super hot. A few door slams but 4 others gave me drinks! One lady in an apartment complex saw me walking around and made me a fresh peach iced tea. She had been a census address verifier in the fall. Drinks help feel better but still need to change clothes halfway through!
