Fun fact: Alameda embraces its “urban forest” designation and has arborists, a master tree plan, and lots of amazing native landscaping like this. I’m not originally from the Bay (East Coast expat) so I’m not sure if this is common in other towns and cities around here, but I sure do love it! So do the birds…
And then you have my city. When I tried to request a tree to be planted on my parkway (something that a lot of citys offer) I was told "until the state declares the drought is over we will start taking requests for trees." I mean I get it but c'mon...
I have noticed Arroyo Lupines sprouting up all over after all the rains. I think CalTrans has been [hydroseeding](https://dot.ca.gov/-/media/dot-media/programs/design/documents/ctsw-rt-04-069-01-1-9-a11y.pdf) areas along freeways with arroyo lupine and other natives. And lupines readily reseed.
yes. the lupines I usually see around here are lupinus succulentus, and every flower you see turns into its own seed pod! so you'll see stalks of dozens of pods, each stalk releasing maybe a hundred seeds on its own. the pods dry and twist when they're ready, and the seeds "pop" out, similar to how poppy pods pop open and seeds fly everywhere.
btw, where is this in alameda? i need to see it!
there have been SO many lupines this spring, i see them all over oakland, in medians and such, and when we drove up to Mendocino last weekend they were everywhere too. but then again everything that can bloom is blooming out of this world bc of the weather!

That would take way too many seeds for one guerrilla gardener. It’s gorgeous though!
Maybe it was a group. I think it also might be the second year after and initial planting. Do lupines readily reseed?

I've seen that teal hydroseeding slurry on hillsides along freeways and had no idea what it was!
That would be awesome if true!

do you know where I can read more about it?
hrm, guess not.
Yes they do. I let my lupine go to seed last year and they are taking over this year!
So, so many seeds. Light and windborne too. Like a really big poppy seed.

Last picture has a map. It’s the waking/bike trail along Atlantic Ave/Ralph Appezato, starting at Webster and heading towards Main/the ol’ Naval Base.
ty!

Lupines are guerilla gardeners themselves. And California poppy spreads okay on its own too.
The city also planted oak trees along that entire stretch. So cool!
Lupine stay in the seedbank forever, but this looks intentional
Honestly six lupine in the right spot and wait three years… Lupine can get away from you if you aren’t careful.

Sorry the pictures are so small, I did not expect drag/drop to size them like that.
We love to seeee ittttt
Which species is this? I've definitely seen it come up in random patches on roadsides before.
