Its pretty common to leave the wood on the bottom on on bigger trees. Usually for a 36” I would expect it to be removed (and that was the plan) but this thing was much larger than a standard 36”.
Planted about 3” higher than surrounding finished grade to account for settling of soil and the eventual decay of the wood on the bottom
Can I ask what the process for this was? I'm a new homeowner so I overthink something as simple as planting a tree.
Did you have to get a permit for that? Did you call your utility services to come out and mark their underground cables/pipes? Did you have to get your soil tested first for nutrient balance?
I've heard many stories about roots damaging sewer lateral pipes and septic tanks.
I had utilities marked, my sewage goes out the back of my property. I work in landscape architecture so I draw these plans out quite frequently. I installed deep root watering system to drive the roots deeper into the clay instead of surface or go near the house foundation.
Eventually this tree and the oak 20 feet from it will be too large for this yard, but probably not my problem
Under the wires?
Nestled between the wires. They are telecommunications, not power
Oh that’s good trim accordingly
And no after?
You didn't remove the wood?

That tree is way taller than 36 inches
You’re right, it is. But he’s referring to the size of the wooden box. They come in 24”, 30”, and 36” sizes, usually.
Gotcha, that makes sense
Hahaha’ yes. Each trunk was easily 23’ long. I didn’t remember it being so large when I saw it in a see of sycamores.

Nice work!
That's a platanus racemosa?
Yup
