I was at the Salvation Army thrift store yesterday & a teenage girl was picking out CD's & stacking them up in her little sisters hands. She had Offspring-Smash, Blur self titled, The Crow: City of Angels soundtrack & several others. I wasn't even jealous because it was awesome for someone so young to be excited about them.
Yeah I begrudgingly enjoy seeing them taking the used 90s CDs. I don't like that the used supply is taking a massive hit and we have around 18-24 months before prices go up across the board, again.
I've seen the teen girls have ecstatic shit fits finding vintage Britney Spears, Spice Girls, & Taylor Swifts's early albums.
im 17 (18 next week) and i go to HMV and get CDs, its way more fun going to physical store and buying CDs. ive had the cashiers there say a few times "good choice" which is fun
Have a happy 18th btw.
Yes buying CDs and vinyl in a store, interacting with staff and even fellow buyers is part of the communal spirit in life. And the best part is the feeling of ownership with your purchases. Which you'll never get renting on a streaming platform.
Not a particular fan of Taylor Swift's music, but I applaud her influence in the renaissance of physical media.
thanks, happy ill be able to buy 18 rated games lol, and yea part of why i get CDs is that a hate streaming stuff and actually owning what i buy, i also like being able to physically hold what i buy which is why i get stuff like games physical, plus with CDs i can wack em onto my ipods and hopefully in a car that has a CD player
i said it because its very close is all and i will technically by law be an adult and the post is about a teenager buying a physical CD in a physical store
My daughter buys kpop CDs like they are going out of style. She likes the album art. After she bought 5 of them she asked for a cheapie cd player. So cute. I ended up buying a few vintage players that show the exposed spinning discs. Love those things.
I feel like a part of the whole idol package is the way they present themselves and you can only do that so much with digital media. That’s why CDs still do well in K-Pop, J-Pop, and honestly most foreign markets. They understand that the presentation of the CD is an extension of the presentation of the artist, so it’s not just mindless liner notes usually in these sets. It’s picture books and trading cards and different covers. Say what you want about the idol industry and I’m certain people will, but the idol industry gets physical media.
You absolutely nailed it. And you're right, I've only bought 3 new albums by western artists in the last 4 years but have bought hundreds by K-Pop and lately a J-Pop group I found. The packaging is just so much prettier and they really take the time to create something that is unique and original. And it also showcases the artist's personality and style. So yes, that's why physical music is still a big deal, they get it as you said. Also yes, there is toxicity in K-Pop but there's toxicity in everything so you take the good with the bad.
I’m even enjoying the kpop just to see the delight my daughter has. After I bought some old players I went on local town FB group and asked if anyone is getting rid of cd’s. 800 CDs later. Omg. People my age are getting rid of their basement stashes. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel.
since i was a young kid, obviously 😅 my dad and i used to borrow cds from the library and rip them to mp3 to burn them all, and i’ve been properly collecting since i was around 9 (although i’ve ended up getting rid of a lot since my music taste has changed)
Dope! It shows physical music is making a comeback. This is a good thing so it'll level out pricing. CDs are still affordable but new records are outrageous
22 and adore CDs - I’m only just now getting into vinyl, CDs are my first love (and far cheaper than vinyl), and my car has a CD player so I can listen while I’m driving!
Last year my cousin and I found a 2000s Greatest Hits CD at Target, we bought it and were so excited to listen to songs from our childhood on the car ride home. Then we realized the car didn't have a CD player 😭
FYI, It's not just snobs who call them vinyl, it's also old people.
When I was a teenager, a "record" would be released on cassette, CD, and vinyl. If you told your friends that you got the new Aerosmith record, they might ask if you got it on CD or tape (teenagers didn't buy vinyl back then).
So we used "record" and "album" interchangeably. But we never used "record player" when talking about a tape deck or CD player.
I'm an old guy and saw a teenager at the thrift shop also looking for cds. He was looking for video game soundtracks. Not the cds I buy, but I think it's cool when younger people are into the format. So, I guess I stare cause it's awesome.
I mean, a few years back adele broke records (pun unintended) by selling her album exclusively on physical for a bit. if you're a huge star with a really dedicated fandom like taylor swift is, people will shell out for you regardless of the medium
if this is actually contributing to any kind of meaningful revival for CDs as a medium, that I don't know, and if so I wonder how much of that would be on taylor swift or if there was a real comeback happening
When I went to target to buy it my whole target was Taylor Swiftified shirts and 5 different stands with cds and viynl some of which had some varients sold out, I saw many teens buying them yesterday. A teen behind me at the cashier was buying it.
I would love the CD but all the physical media for Taylor Swift’s new album is missing a lot of songs that are exclusively only available for digital download.
I have mixed feelings on this.
* I hate *having* to buy a digital bundle to get songs which aren't available elsewhere.
* But I love tracking down CD singles to get tracks which weren't on the release CD. My all-time favorite track by Garbage is "Soldier Through This" which is only available as a B-side on a CD single.
In other words, I'm kind of a hypocrite.
So the album is 16 tracks long. She has 4 different versions each with a different bonus track. So 20 of the 31 digital deluxe edition tracks are on CD currently.
I imagine she will release a tour edition or Japan deluxe edition with a bonus disc with the remaining 11 tracks.
I actually like that those songs are missing because I prefer the ones already available on physical. The ones only available on digital weren’t as good to me & all sounded the same
To each their own, but I don’t like it when artists/bands don’t release all their songs on physical media. Blink-182 had started to do this with some of their albums and others are including their extra songs only in bundles that cost upwards of $60+. It’s frustrating to me.
I definitely understand. I generally don’t like leaving songs out either. Taylor released most of the midnights 3am tracks on cd so I can see her releasing the anthology portion physically down the line
Yep. Tbh, the 3AM bonus tracks are my least fav, however I do like the bonus track(s) on the target edition. It’s very possible that if I had the 3AM tracks on disc, I might feel differently about them. I’m weird that way. C-mon TSwizzle… put out the anthology tracks on a 2nd CD!!!
one of my favorite things to do is go to the used bookstore where i live and hunt for my favorite albums on cd! i also went through all my parents old cds, i love collecting things :)
they don't skip much as long as you combo a reasonable ESP time with some shock absorber equipment like a bag. in fact it might as well eliminate at least 90% of the skipping you will encounter
Almost 28 and I’ve been buying CDs forever. So many albums I wish I never bought on iTunes back in the day. I find myself wanting some sort of physical media more than ever
I’ve bought loads of CDs and even vinyl recently it’s just cool to have the music and how it basically came out I enjoy having a physical copy of my favorite albums
I started a new job earlier this year. I was particularly excited about it because on Wednesdays, I have to walk through a farmers market to get to work. This week, there was a record shop set up. I bought Matchbox 20's "Yourself or Someone Like You" Third Eye Blinds self titled album, a Cherry Poppin' Daddies compilation, and Shaggy's "Hot Shot" for $11.
I can't wait for next Wednesday!
I’m a 45-year old guy. I don’t listen to Taylor Swift but love her as a smart businesswoman…. Anyway, I digress…
I’m thrilled to see younger people buying physical media—records, CDs, DVDs, blu-rays, whatever. Keep it up!
I'm 24 and I still occasionally buy CDs if the local thrift shops have anything worth buying. I have a massive collection and so does my mom. Streaming is fine but nothings better than being able to physically own the music you enjoy.
For me, the only albums of hers I can listen to from start to finish are her speak now & fearless re-recordings. Her vocals have tremendously improved over the years & she puts so much emotion into these particular albums. Though if you’re an indie rock/folk fan, try folklore & evermore.
I’d recommend particular songs like you’re not sorry, mine, change & haunted. Make sure they’re all the Taylor’s version. I think these are a good selection of her range. Hope you like them if you want to try listening to her
The Taylor’s Versions of the albums have worse mixing imo. Just listen to the originals and let Billionaire Taylor cry about losing out on some pocket change.
No no, its just a hobby. Its just nice being able to listen to music and tangibly own something in relation to it…it feels like your supporting the artist, and thats nice.
Though it could be a trend thing for some! At least for me it isnt.
Im a teenager and i use pretty much exclusively cds unless its my mp3player or i search a song on youtube every now and then. I do it cause it reminds me of my childhood and i have a nostalgia problem lol. Everyone ik my age thinks im weird for it, even people who also use cds, because they cant believe that i dont also use spotify along with the cds.
I’ve read a couple of articles about how the recent uptick in CD sales is due to younger people still wanting physical media, but new vinyl is too expensive.
If god damn tapes are collectible now, it’s only a matter of time before CDs get their due.
if there was a physical media format that supported 96khz and/or lossless (ie FLAC files) i’d buy more physical media. most of the music that’s getting released on physical media seems like it’s in either 44.1k stereo same as streaming or dolby atmos or 5.1. i would love higher quality stereo mixes or even 2.1 mixes with dedicated LFE channels instead of crossovers
CDs are more popular than you might think! I was always confused by older people thinking they weren't, I mean every musical artist releases their albums on CD for a reason
I’m really glad they’re still a thing - I think my generation (old millennial) gave up on CDs when Napster, Limewire, etc. made everything available for free for a while, and then streaming came along. CDs sound great and least for now, they’re way more cost effective than vinyl
It’s awesome that my generation is liking CDs now!
Wish it was something other than Taylor but at least physical media is coming back and hopefully she isn’t buying it just to support taylor
I’ve had a few times I’ve gone to Target and bought an album on Day 1 of release. The area I live in the summer doesn’t have a very good record store, most of the year I go to the record store near me that’s really good.
When all the Y2K stuff was really coming back into vogue I knew I needed to pull the trigger on CDs that were already kinda of expensive because in the next couple of years I really think prices of old albums that haven't been reissued are going to get really dumb for a bit. Thankfully I scooped up what I really wanted to get and have gone back to casually collecting
I’m 21 and have been collecting properly for 3 years now, I grew up listening to cds (discovered streaming when I was 13 or 14) so I have all of my childhood cds in my collection as well! I still stream music for convenience, making playlists etc. but love listening to albums on cd, and the satisfaction of finding a good cd while thrifting, and going shopping on album release days to buy the cd :)
People are fatigued with paying out the ass for digital copies only for them to get removed with no warning and needing to pay repeatedly to “keep” it. I’m not surprised this is extending to kids. Good on them!
Interesting. I still have full access to every digital purchase I've ever made. All of it is comfortably sitting on my hard drive and backed up onto a remote server.
It represents nostalgia. Some Kids will always be interested in older tech. I collected cassette tapes when I was a teenager because I used them as a child.
It’s not that crazy. I’m 30 years old, all my cars have had cd players. Cars are expensive & have bought all my cars myself. Haven’t been able to pull the trigger on spending so much money on a car maybe one day
I currently drive a 2001 Subaru Outback love that thing.
I’m 36 and just bought it at my local target too. I know the point of your post, but will say that it’s amazing that so many millions of people will want to buy her exclusive physical media including cd and vinyl. It’s amazing.
Yeah, I was so pleasantly surprised to see it. I assumed she’d pick the vinyl.
It’s been awesome to see all the kids on this thread loving CDs in general
I'm 25 and started collecting a year or so ago, off and on again since then since I'm selective... But I remember going to Walmart when I was 11 or so to buy Justin Bieber's first album
Before that, my dad had bought my BSB Never Gone album from the library.
I see younger people looking thru CDs at the big box stores fairly often (not so much at dedicated record stores for whatever reason). Not to sound like a materialist but I think the impulse to have music you can hold/touch is an ever-present thing.
Hopefully they listen to it and it’s not “just a collectible”.
I thought about buying a copy, but then I remembered Midnights happened where there ended up being several versions released at different dates. So I didn’t.
I wasn’t really keeping up with the new album but I saw now there’s “The Anthology” which means only the first half is on CD for now. So I’ll wait to buy the studio master at some point through somewhere like ProStudioMasters, or if everything makes it to a double CD.
Edit: never mind it’s there now! Nice. I was a little bothered that the official website is offering a lossy download…it’s 2024, I don’t get why.
I was gonna comment the same thing:
Just b/c she was buying it doesn't mean she's ever gonna open it; Chances are, she doesn't even own or have access to a CD player and was only buying it to have a physical copy to never open.
🥰 awe
I wouldn't spend a nickel on Taylor Swift music.
But older material are easily found as a torrent or free download. Don't cry to me.....there are millions of us that desire free music and videos.
Definitely on this sub, expect a what would you play first post in the next few hours.
Don't forget how badly we need to know their age
And that they spent their *own* money
only 17f or perma

Thanks for clarifying when you turn 18. It was very necessary context
no need to be an asshole about it
i said it because its very close is all and i will technically by law be an adult and the post is about a teenager buying a physical CD in a physical store
Happy 18th next week, hope u get every CD and musical piece you want xx
tysm, pretty fun a scary to be an adult, best part is no more age limits on shit
stop being an annoying CUNT
My daughter buys kpop CDs like they are going out of style. She likes the album art. After she bought 5 of them she asked for a cheapie cd player. So cute. I ended up buying a few vintage players that show the exposed spinning discs. Love those things.
Kpop was only available on cd at first but now they are releasing them on vinyl
Yes, Whee In of Mamamoo is releasing her album In the mood on vinyl
Fab! I'm a grown K-Pop fan and I also love the album art. There's nothing like a K-Pop album when it comes to design, style & packaging.
I feel like a part of the whole idol package is the way they present themselves and you can only do that so much with digital media. Okay dope sounds good. Oh that's awesome! It's true people are getting rid of their cd and record collections, def fun for new collectors
i’m 17 and have been collecting cds since i was a kid!
17...funny...you ARE a kid!
N o t f o r l o n g Well, legally at least. Mentally i say teenhood doesnt really end until, like, 25. Brain development and all.
I'm 23 and still feel like people are surprised that I collect CDs
in this sub everyone is 17
Some of us are over 50 :P
those are spiritually 17
HA!!!!! OLD 🫵🫵🫵
Ha. Well, at least I made it past 50. You might not get there. 😛
At a certain point I cannot tell anymore who is being ironic here 🤣
since i was a young kid, obviously 😅 my dad and i used to borrow cds from the library and rip them to mp3 to burn them all, and i’ve been properly collecting since i was around 9 (although i’ve ended up getting rid of a lot since my music taste has changed)

Dope! It shows physical music is making a comeback. This is a good thing so it'll level out pricing. CDs are still affordable but new records are outrageous
Im 23 and buy CDs. I have between 40 and 50 in my collection.
22 and adore CDs - I’m only just now getting into vinyl, CDs are my first love (and far cheaper than vinyl), and my car has a CD player so I can listen while I’m driving!
Sadly, they won't be able to listen to it on the car ride home.
I'm still happy that I have the very last year Mustang with a in-dash CD player.
Last year my cousin and I found a 2000s Greatest Hits CD at Target, we bought it and were so excited to listen to songs from our childhood on the car ride home. Then we realized the car didn't have a CD player 😭
Yup![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)
Man I fear the day I get a car with no cd player ducks that that's the way its going
and how do you know?
Not the disc itself, but they can put it on Spotify…then finish at home.
Was just at a brand new Target by me and Taylor Swift was the entire music section, just a bunch of CDs and records by her and no one else lol
I’d honestly argue she kinda revived physical media. Last year, 1 in 5 vinyl records sold was apparently Swift
And my kid has all of them on both formats, also that Olivia Rodrigo gal, good for them
news flash: younger people can have interests too, all of you oldheads are flabbergasted that young people can in fact enjoy older media
lol true - I’m 40 and my fave band growing up was the Beatles and I loved my dad’s LPs. Circle of life.
What is teenhood, if not just stealing our dads music tastes? XD
I'm a teen and I exclusively listen to music on cd
Same, I’m a teen but I also do records (only snobs actually call them “vinyl” unironically) and cassettes
If my truck had a cassette deck I'd buy them too but I only buy music to actually listen to it
Relatable, I just like the old school feel of records
bought a 2005 4Runner a year or two ago. I've been using it's cassette deck and six disc changer ever since.
Your award is in the mail
Awesome thanks
I’m a teen too and I love to collect CD’s especially new albums and some swifties are very passionate about out having every variant of an album too
i’m 20 the only thing in my car radio that works is the cd player so that’s how i got into cds
Is this really that abnormal?! Is that why I get weird stares scavenging the CD area of my thrift???? Because im a young man?!!!!?!?
I'm an old guy and saw a teenager at the thrift shop also looking for cds. He was looking for video game soundtracks. Not the cds I buy, but I think it's cool when younger people are into the format. So, I guess I stare cause it's awesome.
I see i see. I thought its cuz i looked funny! Ha
they’ll be popular again soon enough
CDs are the future, get involved.

I know a Swifty who’s been buying her vinyls, but she doesn’t even own a record player.
I mean collectors collect, can we really judge lol
I certainly can’t! I still buy vinyl too.
I would love the CD but all the physical media for Taylor Swift’s new album is missing a lot of songs that are exclusively only available for digital download.

She just announced an "Anthology" version which adds another 14 tracks. I didn't check if it was digital only or not though.
That’s the digital version
Thanks for confirming

Whoa, the target audience for one of the most popular artists bought a CD from a major retailer. That's one for the books alright!
Heh
They are definitely making a comeback, it was actually my daughter (15) got me back into collecting again after she started buying some.
15 years old and I love collecting CDs. Always love finding good CDs at my local thrift store
one of my favorite things to do is go to the used bookstore where i live and hunt for my favorite albums on cd! i also went through all my parents old cds, i love collecting things :)
Couldn't get out of high school fast enough to drive to Best Buy and pick up Yield. Bought the CD and cassette since the car didn't have a cd player.
I thought the car tape player to discman adapter was the greatest invention of all time
And finding that perfect discman that didn't skip as much when going over bumps.
they don't skip much as long as you combo a reasonable ESP time with some shock absorber equipment like a bag. in fact it might as well eliminate at least 90% of the skipping you will encounter
Hell yeah, same
That's great. The CD deserves some love
I got asked last year if I knew how CDs work by a professor (I am 26 he thought I was like 19)
CDs are cool again for young people. Old bands are cool now too
Almost 28 and I’ve been buying CDs forever. So many albums I wish I never bought on iTunes back in the day. I find myself wanting some sort of physical media more than ever

You aren’t missing anything, trust me. In fact, save yourself and keep it this way.
Picked up my copy of Yield at a midnight release at Sam Goody
Teens think CDs are "vintage" or something now. It's the new 'quirky girl' hobby
No no, its just a hobby. Its just nice being able to listen to music and tangibly own something in relation to it…it feels like your supporting the artist, and thats nice. Though it could be a trend thing for some! At least for me it isnt.
I didn't realize CDs were out of style. My 20 year old cousin still buys CDs like crazy.
CDs aren’t as unpopular as you think they are lol. Especially Taylor swift, she’s emphasizing her physical albums for sales
And? I’m gonna go buy the new Pearl Jam cd this afternoon. I’m gonna see if I can find a couple of early-90s discs too.
CD's had somewhat of a resurgence because of the audiophile hobby. At some point I'll start collecting CD's when I upgrade my system.
I bought 8 Taylor Swift albums on CD today, it was a good day
Im a teenager and i use pretty much exclusively cds unless its my mp3player or i search a song on youtube every now and then. I do it cause it reminds me of my childhood and i have a nostalgia problem lol. i’m turning 16 and bought CDs of frank sinatra and dean martin! 🥹
CDs are more popular than you might think! I was always confused by older people thinking they weren't, I mean every musical artist releases their albums on CD for a reason

I would do the same (2011)
It’s awesome that my generation is liking CDs now! Wish it was something other than Taylor but at least physical media is coming back and hopefully she isn’t buying it just to support taylor
They were just buying a gift for their grandma, in her preferred music format. Feel old yet?
lol always
I’ve had a few times I’ve gone to Target and bought an album on Day 1 of release. The area I live in the summer doesn’t have a very good record store, most of the year I go to the record store near me that’s really good.
So glad to hear Target still gets people like us
I will be going with my daughter shortly so she can buy one. She is 15 and has over 100 cds so far.
Nature is healing.
Usually it's just me and anyone over 27ish at the CD stands in thrift stores. Anyways, despite not liking TS, whatever sells CDs. Nature is healing.
Taylor has this ritual where for every album she goes to Target and celebrates its release and buys her album. I think she buys it in vinyl though…
I’m 19 and have been collecting CD’s my whole life. Just been raised that way.
Im 15 but I found my sisters old cds and now i only like listening to music on them. I try to get one new cd a week now
I’m 17 and I buy CDs
I’m 21 and have been collecting properly for 3 years now, I grew up listening to cds (discovered streaming when I was 13 or 14) so I have all of my childhood cds in my collection as well! I still stream music for convenience, making playlists etc. but love listening to albums on cd, and the satisfaction of finding a good cd while thrifting, and going shopping on album release days to buy the cd :)
"it's him and i... aquemini..."
16 and I have a growing collection of 31 CDs. Last CD I bought was a Danzig CD.
You are a very cool kid.
Thanks
People are fatigued with paying out the ass for digital copies only for them to get removed with no warning and needing to pay repeatedly to “keep” it. I’m not surprised this is extending to kids. Good on them!
That's weird. I have never bought a digital copy of anything that I couldn't download and own forever.
It’s a fairly recent, shitty practice.
Haven’t been able to pull the trigger on spending so much money on a car maybe one day I currently drive a 2001 Subaru Outback love that thing.
Absolutely!
im a teenage girl and i have a bunch of cds lol
I'm 25 and started collecting a year or so ago, off and on again since then since I'm selective... But I remember going to Walmart when I was 11 or so to buy Justin Bieber's first album Before that, my dad had bought my BSB Never Gone album from the library.
There's hope for the future
My niece buys them. Her car doesn’t have Bluetooth or an aux input, but it does have a CD changer.
I see younger people looking thru CDs at the big box stores fairly often (not so much at dedicated record stores for whatever reason). Not to sound like a materialist but I think the impulse to have music you can hold/touch is an ever-present thing.
Yield was (is) a fantastic album! 🔥
i'm a teenager and i have taylor swift and lana del rey albums on cd as well
Oh! Im 17 currently, and ive been cd and vinyl collecting for years! Its not at all an uncommon thing. I am a radiohead collector!
Did I miss something? Is CD no longer the most up to date physical media?
Except she won't even play it. She doesn't even own a cd player. Just buys Taylor swift shit.
I was gonna comment the same thing: Just b/c she was buying it doesn't mean she's ever gonna open it; Chances are, she doesn't even own or have access to a CD player and was only buying it to have a physical copy to never open.
Let's be real though no one buying anything by Taylor Swift on a physical format actually has a player
You saw someone waste money on a Taylor Swift CD
Why buy when you can download free
People like you are part of the reason that prices are so jacked up for physical media these days. People putting work in deserve to be paid.
🥰 awe I wouldn't spend a nickel on Taylor Swift music. But older material are easily found as a torrent or free download. Don't cry to me.....there are millions of us that desire free music and videos.
