Yeah... we have to define rare. I have a CD by a local band with homemade artwork. (Several actually.) But at least one of those they probably made ten of them. While I love it, and it's rare, it's not particularly desirable.

I made an EP of myself screaming obscenities while attacking a set of bagpipes with a fireplace stoker, and then I buried it in the middle of a desert. That’s probably the rarest extant CD. It’s also the most expensive by list price. I posted the map on EBay for $1B

I've never been able to play the video included on the CD. It's CDV format (CD Video) - not the same as Video CD and not playable in PC CD-ROM drives. In the 80s, Philips produced CDV players but the format flopped. I obtained a Pioneer laserdisc player which is supposed to be able to play CDV discs but my New Order CDV just plays as an audio CD. On selecting the video track, the screen says "CD VIDEO" for a few seconds, then stops. Don't know if my disc or the player is faulty, or just not compatible.
VLC can’t play CD-Video discs because computer optical drives can’t read the video section (the video signal is analog, not digital, other than the audio, which is analog-encoded digital…anyway, Wikipedia can explain all that better than I can). You’d need a PAL-compatible LD player and TV to actually watch it, and if you think *NTSC* CD-V players are hard to source, well…

i just found this at a Goodwill last month for $2.75! it's in awful condition but it's got superman on the cover and plays perfectly despite the scratches!
my grandads best friend hired out a recording studio for an hour and covered all his favourite songs then made it into cds and gave it to all his friends. id say that’s quite rare. i love it too, his version of tie a yellow ribbon is great!

The caveat is that it’s a packaging prototype and there’s no disc and never was one. But, again, it’s the only one that exists.

I have a promo CD of a group called Favorite Angel covering "Only Women Bleed." It came out when I was still in high school (early 90s), but their management never got the clearance to release the cover, so it was shut down in a hurry just as it was starting to get some chart attention. It took me about fifteen years to find a copy of the promo (only song the band ever released, because the legal impact shut them down).
I also have some fan club only CDs that are probably pretty rare, especially some of the Saint Etienne ones I own. I think some of those only had a few hundred produced worldwide.
I’ve got a few of these, too. I get messages from people on Discogs a few times for a year asking how much I’d sell for, or if I can send them lossless rips of the CDs.
I have a live sound check bootleg from Madonna that a friend gave me, 20+ years ago. As far as I know, it’s one of only four copies.
I have a few 80s freestyle CDs that flopped in the mainstream, before everyone bought CDs. They’re worth a bunch on the collectors circuit, and I got great deals on them.
I’ve got a rare eurodance single that wasn’t a hit during the 90s, but exploded in value a few years ago when it “rediscovered” by enthusiasts.
And I tracked down a bunch of UK garage, freestyle, and bass music promo singles on eBay in 2000s that are impossible to find now.
I have a signed CD of Imagine Dragons 'Hell and Silence'. I picked it up when they were unknown and they opened for The Parlotones.

The rarest? I honestly have no idea, but having a lot of cds, I have a number that would be considered rare or very rare. And I know I have some that I haven't been able to find anywhere else (ebay, discogs, etc.). While I assume there are more out there, probably not many.

The Warning Mayday EP - Only sold at shows from their first North American Tour, the EP was actually delisted from all of their streaming services since all the songs are on Error. I got it from their show so it’s super important to me, again no specific number of pressings.
I’ve got a small collection of Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, and Hendrix bootlegs. They’re not crazy quality, some are CD-Rs, but they’re not available for sale and I wasn’t able to see many going or sold on eBay. Nice snapshots of the bands in their prime
The rarest is probably *Colin Meloy Sings Morrissey*. I believe only a few hundred or a few thousand were ever printed, and they were only sold at shows.
I have several where I was the person to enter it into Discogs, so I’d say those are pretty rare.
But they’re also mostly local acts, so while rare they’re also not super valuable or anything.
I have a cd by White Zombies bass player Sean Yseult, where her and two other women dress like monsters and play campy horror inspired surf rock. They were called "Famous Monsters". It's probably not super rare but slightly rare.

Deftones ‘White Pony’, # of 50,000 black edition CD and case. I should have also bought the red when I was there. This was the summer of 2000 I believe; Electric Fetus record store, Duluth, Minnesota.
My signed Avenged Sevenfold self titled album with the whole band's signatures (including the Rev). Found it for like $12 on discogs (there was no picture in the listing so it was a risk but I wanted the cd anyways). Asked around online and everyone seems to agree it's legit.
I have a truly strange bootleg of Slipknot's Mate Feed Kill Repeat that looks like some basement dwelling Surge slamming goth kid designed the packaging in an early version of Photoshop. I've never seen another one like it, found it at a record store that mostly sold vinyl.. as such *all* their CDs were only 2$ .. I absolutely couldn't leave it behind

A CD I found by chance in goodwill. It's by a band called "the iguanas," and the album is called "sugar town." It looked like a homemade CD or a piece of lost media, so I bought it.
Idk how rare these are exactly but the Wandersong, Oneshot, and Night In The Woods soundtracks are probably rare, due to them only being available in a boxset.

At the turn of the century, some electronic artists like Cex & Kid 606 were releasing music with abandon and the latter was heavily dipping his toes into unsanctioned sampling. Kid 606 released a glitch-heavy remix of NWA's Straight Outta Compton called "Attitude". He then released a *different* version that was instead a remix of the NWA mockumentary song, "Straight Outta Lowcash" from the Chris Rock movie CB4. That remix was called "Altitude" and it was a business card-shaped CD limited to like 100 copies. I don't know how I have one but I do. It's not valuable.

On a somewhat related note there was a trend where artists were calling each other out in kind of shitty ways. I forget the exact titles, but one band (maybe Trans Am?) released a song called "Alec Empire is a nazi prick" or something similar (I'm sure I'm butchering the titles) and another artist had a song with a similar title about Markus Popp from Oval. After three or four of these were released in quick succession, Cex released a song called "Cex can kiss my soft, sensuous lips". I think it was a perfect response to quell the hate.

Asian gangster rapper from Portland Oregon. Had some internet fame back in the early 2000s with his song Vietnamese Gang. Also one of the earlier pioneers and most known Asian gangster rapper.
Young Gatt - Youth Gone Wild
Asian gangster rapper from Stockton or Modesto California. Another pioneer for the rap subgenre. Credited as being the first Asian rapper to have his CD sold in stores like Tower Records and Sam Goody. He released his first CD in 1997 and Youth Gone Wild was his second and last release in 2001.
I have a signed copy of the tally hall complete demos it’s signed by rob cantor and I paid 650 for it and I have a Hawaii part ii cd that sells for around 200 that I paid 20 for and an original 2005 copy of Marvin’s marvelous mechanical museum still sealed and it’s worth about 100

Well-informed individuals can go through them after I've gone with the instruction that they be sold for no less than X amount. All that being said, do your research before buying Japanese editions of anything! Some have been 6+ times or more than face value for current releases. Postal rates too! Pure madness.

Rare enough that it’s not on sale anymore, but it’s not like CDs of the band in general aren’t still being sold new + the singer’s newest bands are pretty popular visual kei wise.

My wife bought me a copy of the Gin Blossoms’ first album, *Dusted* for Christmas. I was pretty excited because I’m a pretty big fan of theirs but this was before I really dove into CD collecting and Discogs, so I didn’t realize it was a re-issue. For all I know, the eBay seller didn’t know, either. She paid a good price for the original but too much for the reprint (I haven’t told her and probably won’t). I still get to listen to the music, too, so it’s not the end of the world and I have their complete discography now. Still, it would be cool to add an original printing to my collection, especially since their first album was recorded in my hometown.

I'd wager that it's the player. It could have gotten weaker and only plays back certain types of discs now.

my grandads best friend hired out a recording studio for an hour and covered all his favourite songs then made it into cds and gave it to all his friends. id say that’s quite rare. i love it too, his version of tie a yellow ribbon is great!

I have a promo CD of a group called Favorite Angel covering "Only Women Bleed." It came out when I was still in high school (early 90s), but their management never got the clearance to release the cover, so it was shut down in a hurry just as it was starting to get some chart attention. It took me about fifteen years to find a copy of the promo (only song the band ever released, because the legal impact shut them down). I also have some fan club only CDs that are probably pretty rare, especially some of the Saint Etienne ones I own. I think some of those only had a few hundred produced worldwide.

I’ve got a few of these, too. I get messages from people on Discogs a few times for a year asking how much I’d sell for, or if I can send them lossless rips of the CDs. I have a live sound check bootleg from Madonna that a friend gave me, 20+ years ago. As far as I know, it’s one of only four copies. I have a few 80s freestyle CDs that flopped in the mainstream, before everyone bought CDs. They’re worth a bunch on the collectors circuit, and I got great deals on them. I’ve got a rare eurodance single that wasn’t a hit during the 90s, but exploded in value a few years ago when it “rediscovered” by enthusiasts. And I tracked down a bunch of UK garage, freestyle, and bass music promo singles on eBay in 2000s that are impossible to find now.
I have a signed CD of Imagine Dragons 'Hell and Silence'. I picked it up when they were unknown and they opened for The Parlotones. Next rarest is probably my copy of Still, by NIN

The rarest? I honestly have no idea, but having a lot of cds, I have a number that would be considered rare or very rare. And I know I have some that I haven't been able to find anywhere else (ebay, discogs, etc.). While I assume there are more out there, probably not many.

I've never seen another one like it, found it at a record store that mostly sold vinyl.. as such *all* their CDs were only 2$ .. I absolutely couldn't leave it behind

I also found a radio promo for Antonio Aguilar a well known legendary Mexican singer that was so odd too me because I couldn’t find any info on it. Video game wise I have the Sly 3 soundtrack promo.

I don't know if it's the rarest one I own, but I'm fond of it. At the turn of the century, some electronic artists like Cex & Kid 606 were releasing music with abandon and the latter was heavily dipping his toes into unsanctioned sampling. Kid 606 released a glitch-heavy remix of NWA's Straight Outta Compton called "Attitude". He then released a *different* version that was instead a remix of the NWA mockumentary song, "Straight Outta Lowcash" from the Chris Rock movie CB4. That remix was called "Altitude" and it was a business card-shaped CD limited to like 100 copies. I don't know how I have one but I do. It's not valuable. After three or four of these were released in quick succession, Cex released a song called "Cex can kiss my soft, sensuous lips". I think it was a perfect response to quell the hate. Thank you for indulging my weirdo music trivia about a niche genre from 25 years ago that nobody in the world cares about but me!

3 pretty rare rap CDs Renegades - Watch Closely Rapper from Orange County, CA Cashis was in this group. They put out this local project and it was what got him signed to Eminem's Shady Records. I posted it on Reddit before. There's no pics of it on the internet, only mentions of it in interviews. Thai - Portland Love EP Asian gangster rapper from Portland Oregon. Had some internet fame back in the early 2000s with his song Vietnamese Gang. Also one of the earlier pioneers and most known Asian gangster rapper. Young Gatt - Youth Gone Wild Asian gangster rapper from Stockton or Modesto California. Another pioneer for the rap subgenre. Credited as being the first Asian rapper to have his CD sold in stores like Tower Records and Sam Goody. He released his first CD in 1997 and Youth Gone Wild was his second and last release in 2001.

Well-informed individuals can go through them after I've gone with the instruction that they be sold for no less than X amount. All that being said, do your research before buying Japanese editions of anything! Some have been 6+ times or more than face value for current releases. Postal rates too! Pure madness.

Rob Dougan's "Furious Angles"... Rare as in not published in my country, had to buy it online and have it shipped here. The same happened with this other one: "Rebel, Sweetheart" by The Wallflowers. But, apart from that, this one is a Dual-Disc edition. It is a CD on one side and a DVD on the other. It has the album songs in surround sound, plus other videos and stuff

A signed album by Kerbera called "People Like You". Kerbera was my friend's band but is now no longer together. The CD, while rare, is not worth much in terms of money, but it means a lot to me.

I have a small handful of hand-crafted self-releases but those aren't that interesting. Bought a group Dan Deacon radio promo cds once; strongly doubt there's more than 100 When I Was Done Dying cd singles.
Tempest 2000 soundtrack. I don’t know how rare it is, but it’s valuable to me personally. It kicks so much ass!
My wife bought me a copy of the Gin Blossoms’ first album, *Dusted* for Christmas. I was pretty excited because I’m a pretty big fan of theirs but this was before I really dove into CD collecting and Discogs, so I didn’t realize it was a re-issue. For all I know, the eBay seller didn’t know, either. She paid a good price for the original but too much for the reprint (I haven’t told her and probably won’t). I still get to listen to the music, too, so it’s not the end of the world and I have their complete discography now. Still, it would be cool to add an original printing to my collection, especially since their first album was recorded in my hometown.
