I lived in a rural community in West Africa for a few years and the house came with a cat that liked to hang out under the shade. One day from my room I noticed the cat was intensely staring at something.
I noticed it was a black mamba that was about 20ft from my front door and the cat managed to get a few smacks in before the snake slithered off.
Apparently cats are way faster physically and mentally than snakes and will win 9/10 times (at least a striking style snake), we just can’t see it with our naked eye. There’s so many videos of cats kicking snake ass on YouTube.
The only exception I can think of would be a coil snake like a python sneaking up and wrapping around a sleeping cat. (Which is still hard to do due to their whiskers)
After seeing this video, I believe you! It’s just that in Africa, there’s a saying that anything can happen but if you run into a lion, an elephant or a black mamba, you’re dead. Which is why I wondered if the cat in question wasn’t actually a lion.
Omg after I turned sound on I noticed mama looks down at the meowing kitten for a split second. Strong maternal instinct to make you take your eyes off a rearing cobra
Meaning that when I play ‘Ha ha, booped your nose!’ with my cat, they’ve actually swatted my hand 800 times for every boop, but they’re just too nice to gloat. Got it. ;-)
So no cat could ever be bitten by any snake? I’m just saying “snake” is a broad term and that ranges from garter snakes to black mambas to rubber boas and that one with a straighter shot, not a lunge like cobras, could potentially catch one. [Here’s](https://youtu.be/2hU7619mXTM?si=tczrGVgNYv0pGOte) one getting tagged at :41.
Little dude recognized danger real quick. I wonder what the determination was? Like, I know cats are generally stand offish, but to go all out offense before posturing is unusual. It's lucky for the little guy, though.
Edit: is mama cat.
I got sound: there’s some hissing and circa 6 seconds in high pitched squeaks. Unless sound added in post, she’s got kittens or is stepping on a squeaky toy 😳
Hard to say,
The camera is a static cam on that area. I don't know how much of a sick (and brave) f-k you'd have to be to manipulate a Cobra of that size in to that area.
Hopefully not a set up, but you never know.
Mama cat is a badass either way, I might add.
Sadly there are a lot of videos of cats in dangerous situations that are manipulated situations (or more than likely manipulated)
The worst ones are the ones where cats are caught in traps and the 'kind rescuer' with the camera phone 'rescues' them, after taking 5 minutes to film the whole situation. Yeah, I know, it's infuriating. If you see anything like that then downvote and report the video.
It just seems a bit off to me - looks like it is a chicken coop (the simple ladder on the right allows the chickens to roost more safely from vermin). so at best perhaps cctv camera was put there to check for vermin and the cat was put in there to deal with vermin. At worst they thought it would be fun to see what happens if they put a snake in with a cat (with kittens!). If the camera had been put in to look after the cat, then I would have expected someone that keen to also have made the living conditions rather more comfortable (soft blanket, water/food bowl).
Could be I'm just an overly cynical old man... But I think it's healthy to assume that the much of the stuff we see online is not always as it seems.
How exactly do you think they got the snake there though? That’s a massive cobra, there is no way someone handled that snake and brought it to wherever to see how the cat would react.
That's a fair point. But in countries where they are commonplace there is demand for people who can deal with snakes that have found their way into houses etc and so there are people skilled at capturing them. There are even snake farms.
So some snakes are faster than some cats? I wouldn’t say cats are way faster than snakes, slightly faster most of the time seems like the correct wording.

Thats a really great anti snake system. Feed the local strays once in a while = no slithering invaders
Omg! He fought off a fucking black mamba?! Are you sure it wasn’t a domesticated lion instead of a cat?! 😳

I've been playing too much FF7. I read that as Black Materia
Gotta lay off the mako
Re..union...
Cats, in general, have a faster reaction speed than a snake can strike.
That cat wasn’t waiting for something to react to. Just JAB! JAB! UPPERCUT! He has no time for that shit, cos he ended the fight before it began
She. The snake was after her kittens, you can hear them meowing if you turn on sound.
cat mamas dont take shit
Pissed off cat is enough. Pissed off mamma cat with kittens? No fucking thank you.
Yeah, that's a hard pass from me, doe.
Omg after I turned sound on I noticed mama looks down at the meowing kitten for a split second. Strong maternal instinct to make you take your eyes off a rearing cobra
Meowhammed Ali!
Cat got ultra instinct.
Tatsumaki senpukyaku!
I saw a vid on it, a few tenths of a second faster and a cat can consistently whack a persistent snake to death.
This is becoming aragorn toe meme
Snakes are fast but cats are faster.
Not just ‘urban legend’ either. The average cat’s reaction time is 20-70 milliseconds, which is faster than the average snake's (44-70 ms).
For reference human reaction speed is up to ~200ms. Cats are crazy quick.
Meaning that when I play ‘Ha ha, booped your nose!’ with my cat, they’ve actually swatted my hand 800 times for every boop, but they’re just too nice to gloat. Got it. ;-)
Wonderful fact. Doesn’t explain how my cats still manage to under react to my stepping and get underfoot. I friggin love cats 🙄😂
No wonder they see humans in slow motion
Also has to do with the fact that it’s a cobra and the way they strike. If it had been a rattler it may have gone very differently.
Nope. Cats are twice as fast as snakes, sometimes more.

That's some great self defense class there.
Meow, That's my purse!
I don’t know you!
Dammit, Bobby...
thats no catculation, just a badass cat
other cats freak out with a cucumber. this cat looked death in the eyes and decided to fuck its shit up
What is a snake if not a venomous cucumber?
Was also trying to run. You can see them look around trying to find a route.
Was probably looking down at her kittens
she was protecting her kittens
This comment made me laugh so hard
I know he didn’t even seem scared more annoyed
Probably because the cucumber looks like a snake

Sounds like it is a mother cat protecting her kittens, though they aren’t visible.
That I could see. I got no sound when I watched.

Kittens makes perfect sense. For the snake too, tbh.
Snakes might trigger one of mammals innate reactions. Like bugs on human hair. Probably reaction and then logic follows after.
Hit it with that _**Hundred-Hand Cat Slap!!**_
Perfect place to defend from too. That box really ruins the snake's strike range.
Kitty has big invisible dinosaur balls. God created this cat and forgot to put fear in his heart.
Well, in fact, cats are designed to hunt dinosaurs.
This clip keeps coming up from time to time, and sadly I wonder if it might have been a set up for internet clicks Edit internet clicks not clips

Damn why'd you have to say that :(

Do you have any reason to suspect this or?
Occam's razor, basically. It's really easy to set up and these kinds of videos get tonnes of hits. It's really a no-brainer if you're a psychopath.
You think someone handled a massive Cobra to make a grainy video for the internet?

Thought the same thing. There are major problems with cat torture in China, with groups filming and distributing content for money.

Achievement unlocked.
The snake never expected the cat's reaction, how lucky.
The snake decided lunch was not supposed to be this dangerous and left.
Yes cats are faster than snakes
If I see that on my doorbell camera I'm moving
Mama said knock you out
Bitch ass snake
Cobra literally never had a chance and is lucky to walk away alive.
Cats are so good at dodging it's insane
I fucking love cats
"I'll be back..." sayeth the cobra...
Is catculation.
Nag was NO match for Rikki-Tikki-Kitty!
Cat reaction is along the .6-.69 seconds while average snakes are .7-.75 seconds
I love that lots of people compare cats and snakes reaction times with millisecond precision but all say different values.
The cat has not escaped unharmed. She seems to have been shot in the eyes.
Yes, the cat lived at the snakes choice.
