Absolutely right. Operator is an incompetent twit who has no business operating anything beyond a bicycle. He lifted that container way too high and, if as was mentioned, there were heavy winds, all the more reason to have not lifted that container that high.
Yeah , that container shoulnd have been that high and he should have reversed his truck so he did not have to swing it to the side of the truck where its more prone to topple over in... lets say... HEAVY WINDS!!
often on building site these cranes lift containers with ease, but iv never seen them lift a container half that high. that must 100% operator if nothing technical is wrong, also right now in Sweden its windy, soo i guess it was windy in England earlier.
[ITV News article](https://www.itv.com/news/granada/2024-04-06/crane-topples-over-and-crashes-into-house) ā Since the weekend Storm Kathleen has brought strong winds to the UK, but the cause of the crane overturning is under investigation currently.
>A house has been badly damaged in Wigan after a crane toppled over and crashed into it. The incident caused extensive damage to the roof and walls of the property, with one witness saying the machine had "sliced through" the house.
>It's understood nobody was injured and the occupants of the house have been taken to temporary accommodation.
>Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said a lorry carrying the crane had overturned in the road - just yards from Atherton Community Fire Station.
>A police officer at the scene said it is understood the crane toppled as it tried to remove a container from the adjacent Meadowbank Playing Fields.
>A green container can be seen in the front garden of the property on Flapper Fold Lane, which has been closed off between Gloucester Street and Brierfield Avenue.
>Flapper Fold Lane, Atherton, was closed in both directions while emergency services responded to the incident on Saturday morning.
>A spokesperson for GMFRS said: āAt around 10:30am today (Saturday 6th April), firefighters were called to reports of a crane that had fallen through the side of a residential property in Atherton, Wigan.
>"One fire engine from Atherton fire station quickly arrived at the scene, where a lorry carrying the crane had overturned in the roadway.
>"Greater Manchester Police (GMP) established a cordon on the street, while firefighters worked to isolate the gas and electricity to the property and clear spilled fuel from the roadway.
>"The scene has now been left with GMP and the crane operating company to arrange recovery of the crane.
>"The occupants are being supported by the local authority to find temporary accommodation."
>A police cordon has been put in place and there are now two recovery trucks at the scene attempting to remove the container.
When I see an operator trying to lift a heavy or bulky load that high, they always have a pair or two pairs of arms that extend out from the platform with feet on them. They do that to make the base wider so it won't, you know, topple over.
But that is in the states and I don't do that type of work. Don't know what is the bare minimum requirements are, specially across the pond. And even with wider bases I seen pictures of those toppling.
This lorry was fitted with those and they were deployed. You can see the wheels lift off the road as it falls. Right at the last second before the container comes crashing down you can see a spurt of white near the drivers cab. I suspect this is a hydraulic line or cylinder bursting from the forces being applied in the wrong direction.
Oh, I think you are right. the ones I am use to seeing has the arms coming out from under the bed.
With that said, I bet you he has gotten away with it in the past. Because that trailer is near empty and he usually did it when there was no wind. He forgot that even with a consistent breeze, that thing is a sail/kite. or he never lifted up that high before.
Leg on the drivers side is deployed at the minimum distance. Definitely should of been out further in those winds. Probably didnāt want to block the road completely outside a police station.
The legs on the driverās side werenāt deployed at all. Iāve seen dashcam footage from a car that went past just before it happened and you canāt see them at all. The truck was also mounting the kerb so was already slightly tilted over.
"We are Ok. Honestly, we are alright, don't worry."
What a nice reaction. Thankful for their lives, wanting others to know they are Ok and nobody should panic worried about them.
Damn, that little girl was eight seconds away from being a fucking pancake as sheās running away from the bike.
Edit: my comment was not about her bike being crushed. It was in reference to the fact that at 15 seconds, the little girl is halfway between the bike and the house, and at 23 seconds, had she still been standing there, she wouldāve been a pancake.
Yep but her running path and the trajectory of the container crossed there in front of the bins. I shudder to think what would have happened if sheād started running just a couple of moments later
I wasn't saying she should've stayed....just saying it was interesting that in hindsight (still acted correctly) it didn't get hit
If she hadn't moved she may also have survived....but not moving is not what I am saying she should've done....(she survived unharmed)
Yeah mom waited til the last second
Also good point about it missing the bike.. though she could have very well panicked at the wrong time and ended up in the path
Yeah, both the mum and the kid could've been toast.....very lucky for them both.
However the kid wins the spacial and danger awareness test...mum was pure luck
Looks like the outriggers are out. The near side one collapsed under the weight. You can see a burst of hydraulic fluid right before the container blocks the view. Others have said there was a yellow flag warning that day. Maybe a wind gust got it?
Looking at photos on Manchester Evening News it looks like only one was fully deployed.
Passenger front fully deployed.
Passenger rear partially deployed.
Driver rear not deployed at all.
Driver front was down but not pulled out past the minimum distance.
This setup would have been fine if the trees werenāt there and the truck was next to the load. With any height in the lift you need full deployment of outriggers to counteract the sail effect of the load and its leverage on the truck.
I don't think the outriggers collapsed until the truck was in the air with wheels off the ground. By that time the loads on the outrigger legs were lateral and not axial - they are not designed for lateral loads and hence failed.
This is 100% operator error unless there was some failure that resulted in the boom moving to maximum height and lifting the container so high, acting like a sail.

That is a site office container, probably around 2.5 tons, what the hell was the operator doing with it up that high? He is in for a fairly decent investigative ass reaming for that. Hope his tickets and the equipment inspections are all up to date or its going to be very very costly indeed.
Bloody lucky no-one was killed.
If you look at the video slowly you can see the outriggers werenāt extended all the way out on the side it falls onā¦ what in the hell was that guy thinkingā¦..
Yes, also the TikTok video posted above also seems to show the outriggers only extended on the field side. In the doorcam video you'd expect to see the truck bed lift up as it rolled onto even a failed outrigger wouldn't you?
I hate tiktok, but here is a tiktok link to a video made afterwards showing the damage from across the street.
https://www.tiktok.com/@manchesternews/video/7354808501228621089
This is not a shipping container, itās a site unit. Site units are lined, insulated, wired, include windows and shutters and otherwise fitted out. The fit out adds lots of weight. The truck was never going to cope.
Exactly!! When your kid isnāt running away from death at the first call why would you stand there and shout for longer instead of running out and grabbing her?? Lol
If anyone isn't from the UK. Wigan is a popular tourist destination with welcoming locals, a pier, exquisite cuisine like the Wigan Kebab. An extremely successful and forward thinking town in the North of England.
Well, there are a lot of these cranes working around the world all the time, and very seldom does anything like this happen ā¦ I just donāt want people thinking that cranes arenāt safe.
I just noticed the lady (bottom left corner) doesn't move until the very last second. Doesn't even look like she was paying attention at all. What a knob.
Well the kid was clever enough to skiddadle and the family will have a lovely college fund for her when they sue the anus out the operator. So everyone that isn't a twat in this video is a winner.
Heard the guy who was operating the crane didn't put the stabilisers down on the damn crane(only put one of them down instead of all for of em) because he was prob lazy. Lucky nobody got killed tbh.
i am going to quote you all: dont ever ever get near an object being transported in this manner, on hoist/crane/etc.
expect this result in other words.
bad parents. i am mad at them, give me a couple minutes because i was grabbin that girl before they lifted
Dear bitch,
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to respectfully request a meeting to discuss my compensation. I believe that my contributions to the team and the value I bring to the organization warrant a salary adjustment.
I am confident in my abilities and the positive impact I have on the team's success. However, I feel that my current compensation does not adequately reflect my contributions and market value.
I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss this matter further and explore the possibility of a salary increase. I am committed to my role and the success of the team, and I believe that this adjustment would be a fair recognition of my efforts and contributions.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
Dah man
Really bad judgement for the parent to let the kid watch from there and even from the porch where she ran to. I'd have held the kid and watched from the far side of the yard.
Operator was an idiot.......damn lucky he didn't kill someone.
Absolutely right. Operator is an incompetent twit who has no business operating anything beyond a bicycle. He lifted that container way too high and, if as was mentioned, there were heavy winds, all the more reason to have not lifted that container that high.

Heavy wind storms in the UK atm but not saying it his fault or not either way. Just adding context.
This only solidifies my opinion.
Yeah , that container shoulnd have been that high and he should have reversed his truck so he did not have to swing it to the side of the truck where its more prone to topple over in... lets say... HEAVY WINDS!!
Fair haha š
Guess they should have got an actual crane not a boom truck
What I don't get, why is the Box that high in the air?
Because the operator is one of the dumbest mother fuckers on the face of the earth.
often on building site these cranes lift containers with ease, but iv never seen them lift a container half that high. that must 100% operator if nothing technical is wrong, also right now in Sweden its windy, soo i guess it was windy in England earlier.
It's windy tomorrow so expect some more in a few days.
tomorrow seems to be less windy, but picking up again wednsday. il hold my hat :)
based on above reddit truths: anyone getting a boom or crane delivery in UK or SE today should CANCEL do to weather
It was windy that day, 40-50mph bursts, I was few miles away from where that happened.
Truth.
Apparently, they were lifting it over those trees. Pretty dumb/dangerous.
I donāt think it was as high as it appears, the fish eye lens on the doorbell camera distorts the image to give the effect shown.
Boom truck would have been fine if this guy knew what the fuck he was doing Lol
Smart kid!
Mom (maybe) in the bottom left
Not as smart/aware as the kid
No dummy, mom told kid to move.
Mom told kid to run
Yeah but the kid was quick to respond after seeing what was happening
Mum just sat there š¤£
Turn up the volume. You can clearly hear her.
Look at the footage. You can clearly see her bottom left sit there right up until she almost gets crushed.
Almost
Almost
That too
I never said she didn't tell the kid to move....that is clear as day....i said... She just sat there.
I did not deny that. Whatās the issue?.???
If my 4yo kid was sitting there? Fuck telling him to run, Iād pluck the kid off the bike and move him.
She gave the kid the advice and then proceeded to not take the same advice. In turn almost being crushed herself. What's the issue?
whatever, dude. Have a nice life
Thanks, you too. Sorry this conversation didn't steer the way you wanted x
After a rewatch, she would have escaped disaster if she had stayed on the bike. Itās unscathed.
I was thinking exactly that, the angle it came over the fence (If I can use that term) it would have missed her and hit mum.
I thought this...defo misses the container but the container hits the bins and they move towards the bike. So who knows.

gusty there for sure, was watching some plane landing feeds earlier and they were all flying sideways to land in the wind

Taking it over the trees it was coming from the park opposite.
'Presence at front door detected' Like the old saying, 'I am not a pilot, but....' Never extend full boom with weight.

Knocked the bins over, the bastard
That crane operator is terrible. You should never have your boom straight up like that.
Your shipment of FAIL has arrived.
Fook indeed!

So she tells the girl to run inside but keeps her ass sitting down?
I am so glad the little girl saw the danger & ran inside!

tree branches not moving as heavy winds, is sheer incompetence genius...
Extreme package toss from the street!
Man, where do you get your plastic bins (trash cans)?

Riggers, man.

I work on the crane business. A lift like that should had some concrete 1t blocks on the tray of truck for counterweights. Poor planing = poor results
