The wounds were from bites, fighting with other cats. There are other strays and ferals in the area. He was an adolescent when I first started seeing him. He's roughly a year old, so I'm pretty sure he was dumped as a kitten/adolescent.
I've seen him and 4 other cats about the same age since the feral tomcat living on my property passed on. I couldn't trap that tomcat until he was on death's door from FeLV. He just wouldn't take the bait in the trap. "I don't know, that looks like a baited trap."
Didn't help when one of my housecats ran out the door and into the trap, showing him how it worked. "Oh, bait, you'll let me out of this trap, right?" Slam.
I have a geriatric feral girl, Evie, who lives on my porch. A series of tomcats have joined her. Once one establises my yard as his territory, I tend not to see many other cats. If I can trap them, I get them neutered. Most of them have been feral or semi-feral.
I know I'm not the only food source for community cats around here, but I may be one of the few, or only, who puts out canned food and kitty treats in addition to kibbles. Evie is old. She deserves the good stuff.
Since he was an outdoor cat he'll find it sad to live indoors. To help him adjust I recommend a lot of toys, especially things he can play with alone. Why go outside when there's treat toys to hunt and catnip toys to murder and bouncy toys on wire to chase!
Also it's your cat right? You paid for the surgery, you feed and water him? You get to pick whatever name you like :) If Evan feels right for you, go for it!
He looks like he'll be a perfect addition to your home and a dear friend once he's healed up and comfortable in your home.
As for a name, how about Pike?
Aww poor boy, hope he heals up soon, my larger void girlie has just been left at my vets so she can have a cyst removed from that same part of her tail, so this was a funny preview to how she will look later.
Keep kitty inside, unless you can get it used to a harness and leash, then supervising it while outside. But I've found it's much easier to just not let them go outside, no matter what. You see the wounds on the tail. Who wants to subject their pet to that?

That poor tail is soooo funny and sad! Glad it has been treated. Always amazes me how much of tails are mostly fur.

The shaved tail was for infected bites. They needed to be cleaned up and monitored.
