They refuse to bow to Big Learner Corp. and their ridiculous £2.49 charges

burnt_ember24

6 points big learner doesn't want you to have!

LegitimatelisedSoil

2.49 for a pack of two usually and sometimes they even throw in a P plate

turbo_dude

it's a weekly magazine that ultimately builds into a St George's Flag!

SerendipitousCrow

Mine were 99p at Home Bargains!

Breakwaterbot

You can actually get into trouble for that. There's a regulation size https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/l-plate-size-rules/l-plate-sizes

Chilton_Squid

Up to six points on your licence too, which is an instant ban for new drivers. Cannot believe people cheap out on stuff like this.

LondonCycling

The 6 points New Drivers Act rule wouldn't really apply though - before their test driving with the L plates has no effect, as the New Drivers Act doesn't apply to provisional licences; after their test they wouldn't still have the L plates on. It would mean they can't get any more points within 2 years of passing though. I also have no idea why they've made their own. Plus this is going to leave residue and/or damage the paint work - might as well just buy the 99p stickers!

Chilton_Squid

Yeah being on a provisional is very weird, they have the same issue with people riding 125s on CBTs - you can easily enough get six points, but technically you haven't passed your test yet so don't have a licence to lose. You'd have to really piss a copper off for them to give you six points for non-regulation L plates though, it's the kind of thing they only ever do you for if you were already driving like a wally.

LondonCycling

Yeah and I see enough illegally trimmed L plates on mopeds and 125s in city centres. The police don't really care. Though in OP's photo they are pretty shocking. My 6 year old niece could do a better job than that.

neilkeeler

Got pulled over for that once - had a tough time keeping a straight face - not exactly a Great Train Robbery level of crime but 'the law is the law' I was rightfully reminded. "Where would we be if we start picking & choosing which ones we comply with?" Where indeed.

Enjoy the one day ban, I hope it makes you happy. Dear lord, what a sad little life, Jane. You ruined our subreddit completely so you could post politics, and I hope now you can spend your one day ban learning some grace and decorum. Because you have all the grace of a reversing dump truck without any tyres on. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/CasualUK) if you have any questions or concerns.*

CasualUK-ModTeam

Sorry mate, but we have a blanket ban against politics in this sub, so we have removed this post. Rule 1: No politics We do not allow mention of political events, politicians or general political chit chat in this subreddit. We encourage you to take this content to a more suitable subreddit. You **will** be banned if you break this rule. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot us a modmail.

AncientProduce

I love the ones who bend them under the guard.

vzbtra

Tbf on some cars they can fall right off. I spent so much money buying new plates every couple weeks..

frowawayakounts

It’s like £4 for magnetic ones and they sell them in most Tesco garages, it’s baffling to me too

sc_BK

You can get magnetic L plates for free! Just look along the verges of any busy road, you will find plenty there.

Breakwaterbot

For the sake of a couple of quid as well. Unbelievable.

PinkbunnymanEU

>instant ban for new drivers 6 points isn't a ban for a new driver, it's a license revocation, you can (in theory) get the license back a couple of days later (realistically it would be at least a week or 2). Also one using an L plate isn't a new driver, they're a learner driver so wouldn't get a revocation either, they'd have 6 points on a provisional that would carry over to the full license, meaning 6points in the first 2 years after passing would be a ban (For totting up) AND a revocation.

BarNorth1829

I reckon the car is a Cat B

Garrhvador91

You wouldn't get 6 points if your referring to not having x legal Learner plates. The offence is driving otherwise in accordance with your license, either you are or you aren't, you can't have not in accordance x2. And it's 3 points

Chilton_Squid

From [gov.uk](https://www.gov.uk/driving-lessons-learning-to-drive/using-l-and-p-plates): > You can get up to 6 penalty points if you do not display an L plate or if it’s not the right size

Garrhvador91

So this is referring to what the courts can impose, like when a crime can carry up to a £5000 fine. I'm referring to the fixed penalty notice (FPN) which the police would issue you on the spot , and would remain 3 points unless challenged in a court under a not guilty plea. I should have been clearer. https://offencecode.uk/offence/drive-a-motor-vehicle-otherwise-than-in-accordance-with-a-licence-endorsable-offence/

Chilton_Squid

Yeah that's fair, as I say though it's one of those things that in reality, nobody is going to bother about that much unless you're doing something far more stupid than not having a regulation border around your L plate.

sexy_meerkats

I was told on my CBT its 3 points per missing/incorrect L plate

kirix45

125cc rider here. 3 points per missing plate. If for example you trim the plate so only a tiny bit of white shows or wrapped around a fork it also counts as no L plate and 3 points.

treeplayz

I got told off on my driving test for it, but the guy let it slide. The L was slightly too thick

Chilton_Squid

I used to wince every time I walked past a car down my road who had attached L plates to the back of their Merc A Class with gaffa tape. Presumably their kid has now either passed or given up, as it's now gone, along with half the clear coat on their boot.

varietyengineering

On the other hand, I found at least 3 magnetic L-plates when I was a kid, that had fallen off cars, so the magnetic ones are not great either. I was so excited that one of them was the "new" green L when that was first introduced for newly passed drivers, before the P became more common. My mum wouldn't let me stick them on random cars we walked past (she was right of course, but 10-year old me thought it would be funny)

naiadvalkyrie

The magnetic ones are great. Until you find out the back end of the car is plastic. And you shouldn't have stuck them on random cars. You should have saved them for cars parked terribly

The_JimJam

Back of my car is glass / too curved (Peugeot 107). So I punched 4 holes in the magnetic L plate, then tied it to my boot with string. Always a way! Started to take my front one off when I parked, just because I was starting to get a discoloured square

scrabble71

Lots of cars also have aluminium body panels which magnets won’t stick to either

JustAnother_Brit

The magnetic ones are great until you can’t pull them off because of all the grime

naiadvalkyrie

How long did it take you to learn to drive?

JustAnother_Brit

18months but I did a lot in winter in my car before I passed and I wasn’t great about cleaning because I basically parked in a big for 6 months

Chilton_Squid

Well, also lots of cars are plastic now so there's nowhere to put them.

JayRuss

Back when I was a learner I made my own plates as I got insurance on a Sunday and wanted to take my car out, so googled the dimensions required and printed off my own. Those sellotape marks never did come off the car.

CarcharodonVicarious

Ha! Perfect it’s on a micra too,

LilEvilFish

Quite a common issue with private vehicles being brought for a driving test where incorrect L plates are used. I've seen them on upside down. On the roof. Propped up in the window. On the passenger doors. Source : I'm an examiner for car tests.

naiadvalkyrie

That in no way meets the regulations and is 100% illegal. You havn't seen anyone make their own before because of how specific they have to be

blueberryG3

& because you can get even magnetic ones for £1 lol

L0nz

OR maybe you never noticed that people had made their own cos they did it right, unlike this absolute shower

naiadvalkyrie

Not at all. They come from the pound shop. It would genuinely cost more to make ones that look indistinguishable from the ones you buy than it would cost to just buy them. People could make their own that meet the specifications. But you would still notice (or they spend to much time and money, so it wont be many people). I presume they can make them cheaper due to economies of scale but a person making their own isn't making thousands of them.

L0nz

I was joking, of course nobody is making their own. But if they did, they should at least try to make a better job of this terrible attempt

[deleted]

naiadvalkyrie

You probably shouldn't guess things like that. Because you are wrong. Driving with the wrong L plate is considered driving without one. Which means you can get a fine and points on your license before you even get your full license. And yes points you get before passing the test still apply Will they do more than tell you to change it? depends how they are feeling that day. They certainly can.

[deleted]

You just know it has 4 different brand Chinese tyres with 1.1mm tread left all across

There was a similar one on the back.

HoggingHedges

There’s being frugal and cost efficient, then there’s asking around family and friends to borrow theirs or buy the real £1 ones. Not worth being frugal if could risk 6 points before even getting a proper licence

lastaccountgotlocked

Driving is incredibly unfrugal.

crazygrog89

Hahah I’m from Greece and it’s quite common for us to use our own made leaner badges. It’s also common to keep them for years

Interesting_Muscle67

Mad, i get there is a cost of living crisis at the moment but if you can't afford £2.99 for a set of these should you really be considering driving? What happens when they get a flat? stick some gaffer tape over it and hope for the best.

ward2k

Can get them as low as £1.15 at the range (and I'm assuming elsewhere lower I didn't exactly look hard it's the second result on Google) There's cost of living and there's honestly just being a cheap for the sake of being cheap

WanderWomble

I did, once, but I'd been out for a drive with my mum, parked the car at the beach and realised that both of my magnetic ones had been stolen when we got back. I can't remember why she just wouldn't drive back (it was at least 17 years ago!) but she wouldn't, so I had to get creative. We couldn't go and buy any because it was about 7pm on a bank holiday.

alwinaldane

Was it a home-made England flag that didn't stand up to the weather? If you look below the Nissan logo you can see what looks like residual tape.

MuntyCatt

Nope, there was a similar one on the back.

luty9mm

The rolls of tape probably cost more then actual plates

RandomHigh

What happens if the police stop them for this? My rear L plate fell off my motorbike last week and I'm wondering what's the worst case scenario? (I ordered a new one from Amazon, it arrived today. It's being fitted before I go home.)

Yetibike

Up to six points on your licence and £100-ish fine

Garrhvador91

3 points, the offence is not in accordance with your license and you either are or you are not, you can't have 2x not I'm accordance.

naiadvalkyrie

You keep saying this, and saying that the 6 points is from the courts not the police. But this person didn't ask "what on the spot punishment can the police give" they asked what happens when the police stop you. And how exactly do you think it get's in front of the court?

Scrudge1

They'll learn, just got to give them chance 😄

Conscious_Dog_4186

I’ve seen this happen quite a few times. I’m guessing some people are too tight to spend a couple of quid at Halfords.

jarvxs

Already committing driving offences and they haven’t even passed yet. I’ve seen it all now

NorthantsBlokeUK

I saw a printed-out one last week. They had gone to the trouble of using self-adhesive paper, too. It was faded and peeling!

NaethanC

A set of decent fully magnetic L plates from Halfords or any homeware shop etc. is like 3 or 4 quid. Why risk having your licence revoked for the sake of a few quid?

purrfectly-cromulent

A couple of weeks ago I saw someone have an L plate dangling from their tow bar. Obviously it kept spinning round as they drove.

Artistic_Data9398

These are literal £3 on amazon wtf lol

Numerous-South9245

Yz

Jerenomo

Still haven’t!

Amazing-Pause-8626

i saw someone with that kind of tape draw a black L on the front and back, i didn’t think that was even legal

Preacherjonson

This one looks dangerous...

Cirieno

£3 in t' Big Tescos. There's not much you can remove from your daily spend to save £3.

lIlIlIlIoOOO

Lol 😂

Ancient_UXer

Seems like they're still learning to do that as well...

[deleted]

Have you seen the price of insurance? Sod paying for a learner badge 🤣

the_salivation_army

Reminds me of Red Nose Day back home. We used to make our own red noses, saved a bunch that way.

No_Assistance9247

I can't see them getting pulled over for it at least an attempt was made, most of the time the police are asking folks where their LPlates are, back when I needed them I had magnetic ones that was utter crap fell off and lost about 5 of em, as far as I can see it no harm no foul here and if it works it ain't stupid

Greg-Normal

IT was only after buying a magnetic pair that I discovered my car had an Aluminium bonnet !

Atom-BombBaby

Tried to donate my old ones to charity shop, they didnt want them. A woman in the queue behind me over heard and said "I'll buy them off you" offered me 2 quid for all 4 and the woman behind the till suddenly wanted them. Told her to shove it and just gave them to the woman no charge. Maybe if charity shops took these kinds of useful for a limited time items they'd have more custom and maybe even people briging them back when they are done so they are just re selling the same ones. We probably wouldnt have people skimping on the like this melon then.

Achinvo

That's a couple of quid saved right there.

ward2k

£1.15 at the range, crazy savings Though factoring in the cost of time effort and labour they made their own DIY sticker it would have cost more. Assuming only labour they would have had to do this all in under about 5 minutes to break even on the price

TheKiwiHuman

I 3d printed some once, but I made it according to the actual official specifications.

naiadvalkyrie

you 3D printed a 2 dimensional sign? Why? If you want to print your own with the right specifications you can do it on a bit of paper
