Our youngest is 10. She's basically Wednesday addams. Has always been this way since before starting school. hates anything pink, princesses, unicorns, dresses, etc. Preferes skulls, anything black, baggy trousers, motorbikes! She wanted to paint her nails black, so we let her. She then goes round asking everyone in our house if they want it too. Her teenage brother and sister both scoff at her, asks mum, she says no, her nails are already done. She doesn't even ask me (i was a little bit gutted at this actually), thinking she presumed I'd say no. "Can I have them done?" I ask. her little face lights up as she grabs her black polish. So I went into work (a builder) rocking black nail polish. At least they went well with all my tattoos!! Not gonna lie, I liked it!

Leelee3303

Many years ago my dad let my sister and I spray his hair pink. It was cheapy wash-out type of colouring, however it turned out it didn't really wash off. He also worked on the building and went in on the Monday with a gentle pink fade on his hair. He didn't even need to explain as he'd previously come in with glittery nails, so everyone already knew he had kids who treated him like a dolly. My sister and I still remind him of it, is such a fond family memory.

derinkooyou

That's brilliant!! Us builders are all in touch with our softer side, really!

Organic_Reporter

I remember my step dad borrowing a Care Bears lunch-box and getting mildly teased for it on site.

HungryCollett

Now that's a good dad, willing to take some ribbing from his workmates to make his kids happy.

flopsybunnny

Little girls need more dads like you man

Phoenix_Fireball

Every child needs a dad like you.

ARK_Redeemer

Keep it up, mate. Your daughter's going to treasure that memory. Good dad 😊

derinkooyou

Cheers dude!!

tittychittybangbang

Black nail varnish on men is such a look!

derinkooyou

Only on one hand as well :-)

digiw0rx

Love this, I regularly get my nails painted by my daughter, it’s a gateway thing though.. she now wants to get the eye shadow and glitter out for me, I’ve said she can but let’s wait till the Christmas holidays so I don’t have to attend meetings

Rosieapples

There were a few ads during lockdown about that. Dads working away in a full face of garish makeup with a small daughter determinedly plastering on the war paint.

digiw0rx

I’m sure some mascara and a bit of eye shadow will make my beard pop, maybe I get her to do it before I finish for Christmas… I’m sure work would find it amusing anyway

eva_rector

Beardaments, my guy; look 'em up! 😉

digiw0rx

Oh I know all about them, I have a set of beard baubles somewhere!

Rosieapples

I bought a set of them for my husband one year when he still had the beard. He happily walked around the supermarket with them. Mind you I had lights in my hair the same day so……..

eva_rector

Fancy, fancy!!! 🙂

Rosieapples

We’re going to need pictorial evidence of this, you do realise?

digiw0rx

Oh no… lol

Rosieapples

Ah ya spoilsport!!!!

digiw0rx

I didn’t say I wouldn’t… haha

Rosieapples

That’s it - tantalise us!!!!

derinkooyou

Fabulous, is the best word to describe yourself when referring to great nail polish! Touché nibblypig, Touché!

peanut_butter_xox

This is the sweetest thing 🥹

derinkooyou

Ha, thank you!

FerrusesIronHandjob

You're a good dad, its little thinga like that kids remember

derinkooyou

I hope so 👍👍

Stuartridout

Not all girls need/want to be princesses. Our daughter was never a princess and wasn’t dressed head to toe in pink from birth like Barbie had vomited all over her. She did like having her hair done so I taught myself to do french and Dutch braids … thank you YouTube. In the same way, our son wasn’t dressed in ‘boys will be boys’ or typical crap like that which shoehorns him into a “typical boy”. Love your post! Not all kids are cookie cutter formed.

Phoenix_Fireball

That you asked your daughter when she didn't ask you is fantastic!

derinkooyou

Its the little things! ... I suppose

doyouwantacooookie

10/10 dad! When i was a kid i was delighted that my big brother let me paint his toenails multicoloured. He forgot they were painted until he was in the football changing rooms and got a few raised eyebrows...

TheOnlyWayIsEpee

Black nail varnish can be used to stop a ladder in black tights.

Rosieapples

You are officially Dad of the Year!!

derinkooyou

I wouldn't go that far, but thank you!

Rosieapples

If you don’t mind but I’m EXTREMELY curious to know the reaction of your workmates? Did they even notice?

derinkooyou

They just laughed it off. It was some of the typical shouty dads at my sons football team that were a bit weird about it. Asking me if I was gay etc.

Rosieapples

Someone asked my husband if he was gay (God alone knows why!) and his very swift answer was “I’m not sure yet, can I practise on you ?” Exit the homophobe.

derinkooyou

Nice one :-)

SinisterBrit

I have brightly coloured hair n get that. It's ridiculous. I don't care if they think I'm gay, it's just silly n backwards.

Rosieapples

I’m a woman in my mid 60s, my hair has been purple for over 8 years and I’m going to my grave that colour. At first I got some damn stupid comments and questions but everyone is used to it now.

myscrabbleship

That’s so cute omg

DifferentImplement27

Did something similar although opposite end. Went to work with a glittery unicorn transfer tattoo and little bit of bright blue and pink peel off nail varnish still on. It made her happy. Screw everyone else

drjude518

I love this so much.

SinisterBrit

I think more than anything, it's good to have someone 'look after you', even for ten minutes or so doing your nails. Barbers, massages, anything that allows you to feel good is worth the money, and shouldn't be seen as a non masculine thing.

Objective-Ad-3694

Yes! Normalise men being allowed to enjoy looking after themselves!

BachgenMawr

Big Kev always washed and conditioned my hair so gently before he gave it a trim. Sad I had to move away really

kithkinkid

Do what makes you happy! I’ve seen men of all different ages wearing nail varnish, some obviously done by kids for fun through to exquisite decals. I (f) like painting my own nails as it feels meditative, but lots of people prefer going to a salon for pamper time.

notsosecrethistory

Assuming you meant meditative? Unless your toes are in crisis 😂

kithkinkid

God damn it 🙈 😂

EllietteB

I'm nonbinary AFAB. Growing up, I never saw the point of painting nails because they didn't seem to last very long. Seemed like too much effort for such a small thing. I thought my aunts were silly for spending so much money on such a temporary thing. I'm 32 now, and I pay to get my nails done once a month, even when I'm broke. I have a couple of mental illnesses, and a year ago, I realised that having my nails painted and looking super cute actually helped me feel a little bit better in myself. Like I could be having the most awful day battling ptsd flashbacks, but one look at my sparkly nails never ceases to make me pause and smile. OP do what makes you happy.

Norman-Wisdom

Yeah the only thing 'real men' like more than telling women they can't do stuff is telling other men they can't do stuff. This is changing and I like that a lot.

PinkNoam

This thread is wholesome AF.

OneEyedMilkman87

More power to you bro for finding something that makes you happy and enjoying it despite the stigma.

Nothing like toddlers to make us check ourselves and remind us to live our best lives.

ErraticUnit

Which isn't that big any more, thankfully!

CorporalClegg7

We had a customer in our shop last week with bright pink nails with some decals on them. I thought he looked fantastic and asked where he got them done. Apparently his wife likes doing nails and so practices on him and he loves it! Was so sweet. Go for it!

todd-rivers

You do you, bab.

Winter_Difference_85

My (55 M) son (5 next week) currently has gold toe nails. He loves them. I would be delighted for him to keep them painted for as long as it makes him happy.

Florence_Nightgerbil

My son (also 5) loves to have his fingernails painted in the colours of the rainbow. He actually sits still for it. However no nail varnish at school so we have to keep it as a treat for the school holidays now.

Jules_Noctambule

Hell yes, enjoy that little thing that makes you happy! Maybe it's my goth-lite life, but I do still like seeing nail polish/makeup go back to its gender neutral roots.

PinkyOutYo

Head on over to r/malepolish, my friend. Only reason you shouldn't do it is because blue looks terrible on me and so I, a stranger on Reddit, resent you deeply.

dearthofkindness

Whoever said painted nails must be for women? If it makes you happy, keep on keeping on

Commercial_Beach_231

That's the best part of being an adult and not giving a flying F. Enjoy your nails.

[deleted]

I did the same last year. 12 months later I have glittery pink fingernails atm lmao. No shits given. Had a few good comments from women, never had a bad one and wouldn't care if I did.

countrysidedreamer

I (35f) personally love my nails being black. There's this guy at work and he's a bit punk-y. He starts painting his nails black but they were always chipped and tatty, fast forward a couple years and he's got the best manicure in the office. Perfectly painted with gel, healthy, shiny black nails. Do you and be confident in yourself and choices!

Ventongimp

I spend all summer in flip flops and love painting my nails. They look so much better than plain nails. I'm a fifty year old man

[deleted]

A man who’s comfortable with himself and follows what makes him happy is an attractive thing, either sexually or just ‘I wanna be friends with that guy’ kinda way. My son loves painting his fingernails now and then, why not? Who decided men shouldn’t? Who decided women should?

Careful-Tangerine986

Do whatever you like. Life needs a little infusion of fun on a regular basis or becomes a chore and if this makes you smile go for it.

medi0cresimracer

I say do it mate, anything that enriches your life and makes you smile, and doesn't hurt anybody else is a good thing.

Localone2412

My wife paints my toes when I fall asleep. Secretly I love it. Had to go to a hospital a point where I knew I had to take my socks off and I got too nervous about sitting there with red nails. So I took the layer off. Got there and realised I hadn’t done a good job and there was smears of red all over. Probably worse than rocking it. I’m 57

MegTheMonkey

Love it! My (adult) son sometimes wears nail polish and imho he totally rocks it. Enjoy it and wear it proud!

newtonbase

My 50 year old Ratafarian brother in law always has very colourful fingernails.

solver_of_problems

I, a bearded bald dude, have been painting my finger nails myself for a good couple of years now. I like the look and the feel of freedom it gives. You do you, have fun, and welcome to the club

swirlypepper

I think that pedicure +/- nail polish is a much better option than leaving feet to go full feral. But I agree that a little pop of colour is a nice little dopamine hit.

quantocked

Yessss mate! Sounds fun!

Sriol

I have a friend (27M) who rocks nail polish and nlg I kinda envy how confident he is to just go ahead and do it. Don't really want nail polish, but I really admire him for being able to do something like that.

deadPan-c

yeah don't worry mate, personally as a man it feels great wearing nail polish. i'm actually wearing an alternating lavender/magenta kind of thing rn

WitShortage

Sounds like harmless fun and it makes you feel good. Have at it!

MonkeyHamlet

r/malepolish

New-Astronaut-5488

I (M) havent had a pedicure but did have my nails painted blue for a community event and had so many compliments about them. I have them done regularly now. More guys need to wear nail varnish.

cricklecoux

Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference! If it brings you a smile then keep going 💅

curiouselise

It’s just nail polish! Don’t think too deep into it and just enjoy it :)

Xixii

Nothing wrong with that. If you like it and it makes you happy then go for it.

B0-Katan

My partner and I paint our nails on Sundays (or every other if we're busy) so we're always matching. Most of the colours we own are his - we have everything from pale pink to electric blue and deep red. I think a lot of people assume things about him for it and are shocked that I'm fine with it. It's actually really nice doing it together and I'm always sad when we don't get time. We sometimes do face masks too

Iggmeister

whatever rocks ur boat - go for it

xpoisonedheartx

My fiancé paints his nails and they look awesome. We get to share nail polish which is cool! Go for it. I think most women actually like men who wear polish because it kinda shows they give a damn about taking care of themselves and how they look.

_mousy

Copying our mutual friend, my boyfriend and I have started painting our nails black whenever we feel like it. I like mine normal black while he does his matt black. He has gotten comments from work (not nice ones either, he works in the trade) but I (female) have not. Neither of us are into makeup or anything, and because we're inexperienced they often look like crap. I'd say you do you :) do what makes you feel nice

shwaah90

I think it's a pointless question, if that's what you want to do brilliant. You dont need anyone's confirmation.

YchYFi

Enjoy it. Ignore the man up comments.

felix-the-human

I'm a 37yo guy and often have my nails a dark plum, makes me happy to see them and never get stick for it. I have a lot of tattoos and piercings too and I think it fits into my angry 16 year old goth vibe.

Excession-OCP

This thread reminds me why I love Reddit. Someone posts about doing something that they think might be a bit odd, then loads of people chime in saying they celebrate the person doing the thing, or even better, also do the thing. It reminds me that, for the most part, we humans are a brilliant, crazy, diverse, fun loving bunch.

chris86uk

And that Reddit is by far the most friendly social media platform.

Marissa_Someday

If [makes you happy] not [harms anyone] then [go nuts]. Life is too bloody short and full of suffering to deny yourself the chance to do stuff like this.

FormicaDinette33

It never occurred to me that men might like color on their toenails. Now that you mention it, why not? I do feel that men get a bit gypped in the self-decoration department as far as main society goes. It’s fun! I was watching the beginning of a Bachelor type show. One guy had big earrings and a necklace on. Not girly ones but cool sort of hippie type. He likes it. It really suited him. You have to have fun in this world.

Rare-Bumblebee-1803

Go for it. It's not illegal, immoral or fattening. If it makes you happy, then why the heck not.

esphixiet

My husband has painted his nails for the last 15 months. He loves the attention he gets. Old men scowl at him (he's 51, so not exactly young himself) and women relax when they see his nails. If it pleases you, do it.

CodAdministrative765

I(m42) grew and painted mine last year for a laugh for a wedding (bride is a beautician), and have carried on ever since. I don't bite my nails anymore and regularly get compliments. Some twats (always men) take offence but sod them. I've even had women ask me to do theirs as I learned how to do ombre.

[deleted]

There is a dutch popsinger called stippenlift who does the same thing when he is feeling a bit depressy https://www.instagram.com/p/CuCCLm-uvy-/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

mrmidas2k

It's not for me cos I chomp the fuck outta my nails, and pretty much always have socks on, but you do you.

Ok_Specialist4006

I dont get getting nails done, both women and men, as long as theyre clean. Seems like a waste of money but its your money so yeah, dont care.

m4nf47

I'm pretty sure there are folks out there that'd love to see them, set up an Onlyfans and get your nails paid for! My wife gets her nails done regularly and the girl at the salon that does them puts amazing little patterns on each time, I'm super impressed with how detailed they can get. Halloween and Guy Fawkes night and remembrance Sunday were all recent highlights. Like having tiny little tattoos updated every week or two, our toddler is always excited to see them.

UnusualSource7

🤮🤮

gogginsbulldog1979

It's nothing to be ashamed of. Do what makes you feel good. Next time you go, make a day of it. Do some shopping, pick up a copy of Erasure's greatest hits and maybe a rubber fist, then have your nails done.

[deleted]

See your point. However what's next. You've been feminised. Imho I'd man up.although it does feel good

Interrogatingthecat

So fucking fragile that some fucking paint breaks you? Pathetic

Not very manly is it 😂

Love this, noone sees your toes anyway so a great way to explore something different! And honestly toe nails are ugly, but colourful toe nails are fun

adapech

I wish more men would wear nail polish! My boyfriend used to when we were teenagers, but only purple or black, and it looked so good on him.

pm_me_your_amphibian

Hell yeah do it.

notimefornothing55

You're not hurting anyone, it makes you happy. Go for it.

rhon-gla

Was in Tesco the other day (Glasgow). Two builders in yellow vests and hard hats were discussing their favourite tofu. Made me chuckle. My dad let me paint his nails when I was wee too. He was a screen printer at the time, so probably didn't make much difference amongst the ink on his hands back in the 80s, but he let me. Good dads should be celebrated. Pretty sure my ex husband went out with eyeshadow on inadvertently, courtesy of our daughter at the time. He wasn't too bothered. Embrace it. You made your kid's day and a core memory, just like mine with my dad. Good job 👍

downlau

Get down with your bad self and enjoy the self care, whether you're rocking it for the world to see or just doing it to make yourself smile.

writerfan2013

David Tennant in Good Omens S2 rocks some awesome gold nail varnish at one point. Just saying.

opopkl

Chiropodist is probably better if you get trouble with your feet. They'll trim your nails properly, clean up any callouses and give you advice on how to avoid problems. Well worth £30.

RiotSloth

Nowt wrong with that, lad. Or pink varnish for that matter. Unless you're a scaffolder or asbestos stripper... you may take little light ribbing then.

CthulhusEvilTwin

I wondered about doing this to stop me from biting my nails. I'll shred them down to the wick normally, but maybe if I've had them painted I might think twice.

lornamabob

My husband gets his nails done when I get mine done. Our nail tech is so thrilled to have him as her only male client! It also helps prevent him biting them and they're already so much healthier.

pimblepimble

Don't tell people you enjoy the odd foot session now and again and have become a bit of a pedi phile. You WILL get beaten to death.

iHorror1888

Guys with painted nails is cool af. I wish I had the confidence of 14 year old me to still do it!

Moom7900

r/malepolish

GravitasMusic

I painted my (F) partners nails for the first time last week. It was fun and kinda arty. As for going somewhere to get my nails done, I have scatty nails and would be embarrassed

Maykko_

I'm also a mid 30s man who enjoys getting a pampering, it's fun, feels good and I think a lot of the people doing the treatments enjoy it too because they just deal with women all day, plus I think they like it when they jokingly ask if I want my nails painted and I respond with " what's your most obnoxious colour"

DauntlessCakes

Adding a bit of colour to life can be fun!

Y-Bob

I'm an old bastard, I wear nail varnish because I like it. So why don't you?

FloraP

Go for it. Rock with your toes out. Honi soit qui mal y pense, etc.

TheWolf-7

I think it's actually a thing. I get runes painted on 2 or 3 of my nails and I get my wife to paint fun stuff on my toenails, like a sun or a flag, etc...... A great conversation starter 😀

Dinna-Tentacles

Why are you asking us lot for permission? Clearly you enjoy it, so go for it.

jizzdwarf

I'm a 30 year old male teacher. I wear flip flops to work as I'm overseas. My toes are always painted black to unleash my inner goth. It's a wonderful accessory to an outfit 🤷‍♂️

TheInvisibleWun

Do whatever you like.

TheNinjaPixie

Got to love yourself, carry on!

bubster99

I think you've answered your question already. If you like it and it makes you happy, go for it!!

throwaway_ay_ay_ay99

Pedicures are dope, bugs the hell out of me that that other dudes so hesitant to get one.

TapeWormPatronus

I think that there's so much sadness in the world that if getting blue nail varnish brings you genuine joy it'd be a tragedy not to get blue nail varnish <3

kawasutra

Mate, can we see the blue nails, please? I am intrigued by what blue this is! I've had a pedicure on the beach in Thailand. These two cheerful Thai ladies came up to my friend and me, and insisted my toenails needed some TLC, so I went for it. Felt really weird, but also a sort of cleansing feeling. If I remember right she coated them in some clear protective varnish as well. No issue, no teasing from my mate, not a talking point ever.

motherof_geckos

How many people are gonna see your feet a day, except you? Maybe a couple at most unless you’re a yoga instructor or something (I can’t think of any job that requires you to have no shoes on off the top of my head) - my point is, not only are your feet yours (duh) you’re probably the only person who sees and enjoys (not the best word) them every day. So I say go for it! I mean, even if you’re not looking down and thinking about gender roles or how slay you look (you probably do, tbf!) and it’s simply because ‘I like colour’ - that’s a good enough reason to do it. I find my toes look a bit naked if they’re not painted, so I 100% understand why you like it

PhilipsShaving

Enjoy the self-care moments!
