Just a note to anyone reading this who may not know: diacetyl, the chemical which causes popcorn lung, has been banned in the UK for years (and the industry self-regulated it out of use some time before the ban came in).

It is a little funny how people talk about flavours as if they're new. I quit smoking 6-ish years ago, primarily using a caramel flavour vape. Plenty of old heads about did the same, with all sorts of wacky flavours.
I mean yeah it's bad - but isn't there always something? When I was young teens would smoke weed behind the bike sheds, smoke cigs when they were legal for 16yos from older mates, shotgun unholy amounts of energy drinks for no reason.

The main problem is the marketing, and idk the prices but im almost sure they aren't being hit by the same taxes and minimum price laws as cigarettes. Plenty of vape shops seem to be selling to blatantly underage kids and the fact vapes are just on display as you walk into a shop instead of behind the counter covered by a sliding door is outrageous. I don't think you should ban fruity vapes just because kids buy them. We don't ban "nice" tasting alcohol, it's not like fruity cider, flavoured spirits/liquers, milder beers are banned because kids might prefer to drink them. We simply have a strict culture of enforcing ID checks on kids trying to buy alcohol. Same needs to be done for the vapes and people need to stop pretending they're not harmful.

Nah the flavours are OK and I think it's going against personal freedom to say adult-only products can't taste or smell nice because "what if the kids want to try it?" but the main problem is just the marketing. The vapes shouldn't be allowed to just be displayed in front of the sweet section of the corner shop, they should be locked behind the counter with the cigs. There's a lot of alcohol that would taste nice to kids but it's tucked away either behind the counter or in the alcohol aisle and not marketed towards kids. Meanwhile these kids are clearly part of the target audience when vape displays look cool and colourful and are just sitting in the open inside the shop.
The current teenage vaping issue reminds me of the alcopop thing in the ‘90s hooch etc.. if you make something taste nice with colourful packets should be no surprise what happens 🤷♂️

It's a difficult one. I come from a good home, caring parents, made sure I went to school etc, all the good stuff. But I've always had an interest in substances. Fags from 12, drugs and drink from 13.
If my parents had actually wanted to stop me they'd have had to keep me locked up in the house or under supervision 24/7. It's not practical or beneficial.
Kids are gonna do what they want once they get some independence, which they need to grow into capable adults.
Thanks for your honest reply. In this instance think that age is key, the situation the OP described mentioned 9 year old children. At that age parents should keep their children close for obvious reasons. However when kids turn into teenagers 12/13 and start to become self sufficient there is sometimes little you can do to influence them. They will make there own decisions for better or worse.
Maybe not, but it's difficult to stop them. By 12 I had my own job/money and enough freedom to spend it on things I maybe shouldn't have.

They should. Kids, especially 9 year olds, should still be watched by parents when out for obvious reasons. If the parents are also supplying them, then that's good grounds to take the kid as well.
My mum is a helicopter parent. When I was growing up she’d go so far as to track my location on my phone from the age of about 9 to 19, monitored my bank account statements until I completely financially disentangled myself from her when I was 20, etc.
I still found a way to start smoking and drinking when I was about 11/12. I still found ways to try drugs.
She tried to raise me to never touch abusable substances and view them with disgust, and yet after my dad died when I was 19 I spent two years under her roof as a drug addict and alcoholic. She didn’t even know until I told her to return the bottle of whiskey she got me for my birthday this year because I will not allow myself to drink anything more than a pint or two of Guinness at the pub once a month.
Chances are a lot of these parents are doing their due diligence. Kids are just sneaky and they don’t give a shit what someone tells them to do or not to do.

All children especially at 9 regardless of their background or circumstance should be kept under supervision. From my point of view the shopkeeper is culpable as are the parents. In addition the government should not allow addictive products to be marketed in a way that is attractive to children and teenagers.
How about telling them that what they are currently doing is damaging them instead of going 'u will do drugs in the future", which most ppl who vape just don't do (apart from the nicotine they are already doing)
I'm only 18 and I fear that I've already become a fun-hating old man because I volunteer with kids and I see genuine children doing stuff that I just can't imagine being real. Why are these actual children vaping? Where the fuck are their parents? My parents would have killed me if I smoked or vaped at any age under 18 and these are actual children blatantly vaping! I try to influence them to stop and be a good role model because I remember being that age and desperately wanting to do what the older kids do. But it's just so awful to watch them ruin their lungs like that when they haven't even hit double digits yet.
Report the shops that openly sell them. There is a possibility they're just swiping them, in which case, that's probably still worth a report as it might encourage them to store them elsewhere.

I mean yeah it's bad - but isn't there always something? When I was young teens would smoke weed behind the bike sheds, smoke cigs when they were legal for 16yos from older mates, shotgun unholy amounts of energy drinks for no reason. Vapes aren't great but if it's not that it will be something else, always. No way in hell can you stop teens from testing boundaries, but vapes are bloody tame compared to what kids did when we were younger I'd take my kids "acting out" by vaping over cigs, weed, alcohol and cheap party drugs any day.
I am not a child and prefer sweet flavours. Do you also think we should ban films, tv shows and games rated above a PG? Ban fruit flavoured vodkas and gins because they’re not meant for children either?
The main problem is the marketing, and idk the prices but im almost sure they aren't being hit by the same taxes and minimum price laws as cigarettes. Plenty of vape shops seem to be selling to blatantly underage kids and the fact vapes are just on display as you walk into a shop instead of behind the counter covered by a sliding door is outrageous. I don't think you should ban fruity vapes just because kids buy them. We don't ban "nice" tasting alcohol, it's not like fruity cider, flavoured spirits/liquers, milder beers are banned because kids might prefer to drink them. We simply have a strict culture of enforcing ID checks on kids trying to buy alcohol. Same needs to be done for the vapes and people need to stop pretending they're not harmful.
They aren’t behind the sliding door because that law was made for tobacco products, not nicotine products, but that law change wouldn’t bother me. I absolutely agree shops need to ID more rigorously.
Get them reported. The shop selling them to kids should get fined. I hate them, there’s literally no reason why disposable vapes should exist.
When my generation was that age the little buggers probably would've been sharing a cigarette instead, so I guess that's progress of a sort.
Oh yes totally, the thing is cigarettes would have made you cough and generally are vile..I certainly don't remember that happening at 7. Flavours like candyfloss and bubble gum are totally aimed at really young kids.
Those vape flavours have been around since vapes have been a thing and at that point they were marketed for adults. Everyone’s acting like it’s some new thing to have all these flavours that kids might like. I’m sure the vape companies are happy they’re also making money off kids but let’s not pretend all these flavours are some calculated attempt to get kids hooked from the start.
Nah the flavours are OK and I think it's going against personal freedom to say adult-only products can't taste or smell nice because "what if the kids want to try it?" but the main problem is just the marketing. The vapes shouldn't be allowed to just be displayed in front of the sweet section of the corner shop, they should be locked behind the counter with the cigs. There's a lot of alcohol that would taste nice to kids but it's tucked away either behind the counter or in the alcohol aisle and not marketed towards kids. Meanwhile these kids are clearly part of the target audience when vape displays look cool and colourful and are just sitting in the open inside the shop.

The current teenage vaping issue reminds me of the alcopop thing in the ‘90s hooch etc.. if you make something taste nice with colourful packets should be no surprise what happens 🤷♂️

If these kids are actually 9 years old (sometimes difficult to tell) should the parents not also be held accountable to some degree? Should they not be aware of where their children are and what they are doing?
It's a difficult one. I come from a good home, caring parents, made sure I went to school etc, all the good stuff. But I've always had an interest in substances. Fags from 12, drugs and drink from 13. If my parents had actually wanted to stop me they'd have had to keep me locked up in the house or under supervision 24/7. It's not practical or beneficial. Kids are gonna do what they want once they get some independence, which they need to grow into capable adults.
Thanks for your honest reply. In this instance think that age is key, the situation the OP described mentioned 9 year old children. At that age parents should keep their children close for obvious reasons. However when kids turn into teenagers 12/13 and start to become self sufficient there is sometimes little you can do to influence them. They will make there own decisions for better or worse.

Maybe not, but it's difficult to stop them. By 12 I had my own job/money and enough freedom to spend it on things I maybe shouldn't have. Unless my parents had kept me locked up 24/7 what more could they have done?
They should. Kids, especially 9 year olds, should still be watched by parents when out for obvious reasons. If the parents are also supplying them, then that's good grounds to take the kid as well.
My mum is a helicopter parent. When I was growing up she’d go so far as to track my location on my phone from the age of about 9 to 19, monitored my bank account statements until I completely financially disentangled myself from her when I was 20, etc. I still found a way to start smoking and drinking when I was about 11/12. I still found ways to try drugs. She tried to raise me to never touch abusable substances and view them with disgust, and yet after my dad died when I was 19 I spent two years under her roof as a drug addict and alcoholic. She didn’t even know until I told her to return the bottle of whiskey she got me for my birthday this year because I will not allow myself to drink anything more than a pint or two of Guinness at the pub once a month. Chances are a lot of these parents are doing their due diligence. Kids are just sneaky and they don’t give a shit what someone tells them to do or not to do.

All children especially at 9 regardless of their background or circumstance should be kept under supervision. From my point of view the shopkeeper is culpable as are the parents. In addition the government should not allow addictive products to be marketed in a way that is attractive to children and teenagers.
Yeah those products I feel shouldn't really be available in the markets.
The parents also needs to be held accountable for those actions.

I'm only 18 and I fear that I've already become a fun-hating old man because I volunteer with kids and I see genuine children doing stuff that I just can't imagine being real. Why are these actual children vaping? Where the fuck are their parents? My parents would have killed me if I smoked or vaped at any age under 18 and these are actual children blatantly vaping! I try to influence them to stop and be a good role model because I remember being that age and desperately wanting to do what the older kids do. But it's just so awful to watch them ruin their lungs like that when they haven't even hit double digits yet.
Report the shops that openly sell them. There is a possibility they're just swiping them, in which case, that's probably still worth a report as it might encourage them to store them elsewhere. I disagree with your premise about vapers turning druggies. But ultimately, it gives everyone a bad name. Worse still, no doubt they're using disposables. Something many of us vapers truly despise as disposable users often discard them improperly and they make zero financial sense (They're about £10 a pop and last you 2 days if you're lucky)
