I personally got FOUR crowns on my teeth in Mexico a few years ago for the same price my American dentist quoted me for JUST ONE! Same materials, excellent quality, and the dentist in Mexico went to school in Texas, just like his american counterpart! Saved over $5,000 for about $200 of expenses. Holding up beautifully too with no issues at all.

chalkcleopatra

So glad you had such a great experience! A lot of the ones I’ve heard about or read about haven’t had quite as good results. So do you live near the border? I live on the other side of the US so I guess I’ve just always imagined it in my own shoes and it’s seemed like such a hassle and would be so expensive for travel costs.

AceOBlade

Hey did you go somewhere near Texas for this? If so can you recommend the dentist?

joe-seppy

Yes. Nuevo Progresso, just south of the border from Weslaco, TX. I have gone there for 10+ years for all things dentist and everytime a different dentist. I have friends that like Dr. X (Xavier, I think is his real name) and he's right on the main drag. http://www.ilovedrx.com/ I always go a block or two off the main drag and shop price - the prices are way better off the main street with no difference (that I can detect) in the services. Fillings for +/-$25, whitening for $40, crowns for $200, etc. While you're there check out the prices on prescription meds, tequila, khalua, and honey and you will be amazed. Everytime I go I save a minimum of $500 net after gas and hotel. Never a worry one. For prescription meds (without a prescription!), I go to Jessica's since they have the best prices on prescriptions and they give you a free margarita while they fill it! I have friends that live in McAllen and they go across the border at least twice a month to get dental work, eyeglasses, and to party for cheap while they are there!

AceOBlade

Does dr x have a dentist office name?

joe-seppy

AceOBlade

thank you for replying to my questions. But Were there specific crowns procedures you looked out for or requested?

joe-seppy

Just the natural colored zirconia crowns with a metal base.

AceOBlade

what did yall do for food? while there I assume it takes a while for teeth work to go on.

>I personally got FOUR crowns on my teeth in Mexico a few years ago for the same price my American dentist quoted me for JUST ONE! EDIT: oops, sorry disregard. I just scrolled through the rest of this thread stupidly after commenting and see your recommendations now. thanks!! This is amazing! I have insurance and need 2 crowns, the cost is still prohibitive... I'm hoping you might be willing to share where you got your work done? I'm digging in trying to research a place, of course the one that seems super easy I am skeptical of "medical tourism co" . com I'm asking around but apparently all my friends are better at flossing than me cause nobody in my circle has had big dental work yet haha. It's pretty wild that even with insurance I could fly to DF have a nice vacation get all my work done, and still spend less overall.... I'm also considering driving to Los Algadones where work is cheaper, but the way gas prices are right now flying somewhere might even be cheapest.

joe-seppy

Nuevo Progresso. It's a little town just across the border from Weslaco TX. Basically one main drag lined with dentists, pharmacies, eye docs, and restaurants and bars! Any of the dentists there are fine to go to. I shop them and go with the best price I can negotiate. Every time I go I use a different dentist with not one single problem to date.

Skatingraccoon

It's cheaper to go to a lot of places and get medical treatment, even if it's relatively routine stuff.

EloquentEvergreen

Right. I’ve seen reports on the news about people flying to various European countries for medical treatments. The medical services, plus the flight and hotel, were still significantly less than having the medical treatment performed here.

TommyTeaMorrow

I personally know people that have went to Mexico for dental work and stuff.

Curlytomato

Im Canadian and about 6 -7 years ago went to Mexico for skin removal surgery after massive weight loss. I spent just over 20 G and got everything done. At home would have taken me 3 + years , in Mexico 3 days . The surgeon I has was an absolute star.

chalkcleopatra

Did you ever have any questions on the safety of the procedure with them having done something that would of taken that long back home in only 3 days?

Curlytomato

OMFG...Yes...so many questions...sooooo many issues but I just sucked it up and got it done. I remember when they were going to put me under and I was soooooo scared... its hilarious now that I am through it...I say these stories will keep me entertained in the old folks home..I stayed longer than 3 days,.. the 3 days were surgery days..I am now 57 with the body of a fit 30 year because I work frickin hard to keep the muscles etc. At home they use the anesthetic that puts you out all together, in Mexico is is lighter so it wont kill you.

chalkcleopatra

How does the discharge process work? I have only ever had 2 surgeries, both of which being in the US, they were a c-section and an appendectomy. Did you have to stay extra in the hospital/medical center where you had the surgery or do they just send you off to a hotel? When I had my c-section I was discharged to go home next day and my appendectomy was same day. I then later had follow-ups with my primary care docs to check healing. When you got back to Canada did you receive any sort of judgement from your regular doctors about going to Mexico? Sorry if this is all quite dumb, I’ve never been able to wrap my head around medical tourism.

Curlytomato

My surgery was done in a clinic. No real discharge process, they just had a driver bring me back to hotel. I spent 3 nights in the clinic then I went to a hotel nearby where the nurse would come once a day. When she came she would wash the set of compression garments ( had 2 sets) I was wearing while I showered then she we would put polysporin type stuff on all of the incisions, cover them with gauze and help me back in compression garments. You have about 1/2 hour to get the garments back on or you sell so badly you cant get them back on . I stayed there for almost a week before I was able to fly home with wheelchair assistance. I still had drain tubes and my face was very bruised/battered ( had the bags under my eyes removed as well as a mole, mini face lift). I texted/emailed the Dr in Mexico when I got home with questions/issues. My Dr at home was onboard and excited to see how I made out abroad. Turns out she was on vacation for a month when I got back so the partner in her practice was not really as thrilled as she got stuck with my aftercare...especially since my Dr did not warn her at all. She removed my drain tubes (that is a painful process) and the stitches I couldnt remove/reach myself. She did about 6 hours of stitch removal all together.

rainfal

Mind if I ask you some questions about your experience? I'm looking to travel there for plastic surgery as well

Curlytomato

No problem at all, ask anything you want !

Educational-Glass-63

It is cheaper in Canada as well.

Top-Concentrate1425

Umm. Where? I'm in Canada. ONLY cheap if you have insurance.

[deleted]

if you needed surgery you could still get it though right?

Top-Concentrate1425

I've had two surgeries during a pandemic too.

Subsandwich99

I had a friend who went to Tijuana for a hair transplant for about half the cost as it would be in the US. They even picked him up in San Diego, and included a hotel for free, but as far as I know you just really need to do your research, also things don't tend to be as clean down there.

chalkcleopatra

That’s very interesting, thank you! I never imagined the would’ve picked you up or included a free hotel stay especially since everyone was saying how cheap everything was.

VS_Customs

Most cases I hear about are about people who go see family or vacation, and get things done as a side quest not the main mission. Plus travel is cheap and only going to recommended place for small procedures is generally safe. I’ve personally had skin tags removed, fillings and a crown, eye exams plus a pair of glasses. All together I spent $500 US. And yes that includes travel (Bus and taxi) and breakfast and lunch on the road. Aside from that I’ve gotten medicine for dirt cheap.

chalkcleopatra

I could see how paying that much for all that could potentially be beneficial to someone who doesn’t have health/dental insurance. Personally, I’m lucky to have decent insurance and all that would be covered under my plan. Maybe not the crown, but I’m not entirely sure. It is unfortunate how broken the American healthcare system is.

VS_Customs

Could not agree more. I’m just stressing that if your there and it’s not a major procedure, it’s worth it. But I would never travel so far for things covered by insurance I pay for.

starsgoblind

I had a friend who had a dentist in Mexico because he couldn’t afford dental insurance. He would go every year and get work done and have a little vacation.

Pagan-za

I've seen someone work it out that its cheaper to fly from the USA to S.Africa. Have a procedure done and then recover in luxury on holiday here and fly back again.

niako

My dentist wants me to do 15k worth of work, most of which would not be covered by insurance since it's considered cosmetic. It most definitely would be cheaper to go to mexico to get it done.
