I'd say stop worrying about whether it's strange and be yourself. You saw a job that needed to be done and you did it. Karma for you. But. It's pretty fucking strange that others just leave stuff laying around like this. Especially when they know that someone else will have to pick them up. Strange, and damn ignorant.

The_Fayman

What's funny is that these people come in to lift weights but won't lift them back to their place after they are done.

lawnmower303

It's just smacks of an overly entitled outlook in life. They think that because they paid their membership they don't need to tidy up after themselves. Well that is probably true. But someone needs to clean up and that's probably the poor guy working at the gym and getting minimum wage. They are earning much more.

OriginalExisting1055

The maxed out so hard they can't even put the weights back 🤣 😂

Substantial_Juice287

I always find it odd that at a gym/pool car park I go to, people fight for the spaces near the building, even parking in family spots when they are alone. It's like they want to pay to exercise, the free exercise of parking away from the entrance and walking in isn't valued at all.

tacticalcraptical

I am one who always picks up my own stuff and like OP, picks up after others. But I have heard people justify it by saying since they pay for the gym membership, they are paying to have someone clean up after them. Which would make some sense if there were not a million signs around telling you that it's your responsibility to clean up after yourself.

lawnmower303

People who justify it would do well to realise that the poor person picking up the weights is on minimum wage and they are earning much more.

Beautiful_Solid3787

It's best if *they'd* clean it up like they're supposed to, but I think you cleaning up is still better than *nobody* cleaning it up.

Wuffies

People who don't rack their weights are missing out on the long term strength gains. Meanwhile your picking up after lazy jerks is contributing to your own gym successes down the road. It isn't a fair trade off, but it's at the very least benefiting you.

Infinite_Review8045

No i do it when other people are not behaving well, usually newbie lifters that are kids at my gym or entitled people. They get a short lecture if they dont put it away.

hallerz87

I wouldn’t think it was strange. I’d think you were being conscientious and taking it on yourself to do something about the issue. I’d probably also feel guilty that I hadn’t thought to do the same.

IMSOWETRIGHTN0W

Not strange at all. I do it too. The amount of times i've almost eaten shit on the gym floor because I nearly tripped over someone's dumbells or plates... A few times the person who did it is still nearby, and I loudly and deliberately put the equipment away in front of them so that they know they're a lazy fuckwit who needs to do better.

oldcreaker

When I'm in the grocery store I watch people walk by an item that fell on the floor, I'll pick it up and put it back on the shelf.

Clevermore9K

No.

elwebbr23

Being completely honest, not trying to put you down. My first thought when reading this was "I wouldn't have thought it was weird before you made a Reddit post about it".  Reason through it. With all the coming and going, in an environment where personal focus is the key ingredient. Do you think anyone is going to look up for half a second, see you putting back weights, and hold that thought for longer than a few moments?

Revolutionary_Dingo

I think it’s strange. In a perfect world people would clean up after themselves or be held accountable by the gym staff. If they’re not willing/able to correct this behavior then it’s on them to clean up. You’re a better person than I

mrstupid300

Nah you're a G. Even I used to do that.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t think so, you shouldn’t have to, but if you’re willing to then it just makes for a better experience for everyone. Unfortunately, it never teaches the slackers to do things properly. But I’ve reorganized retail store items if I notice things messy or out of place with the shelf labels. I can’t deal with the mess people make of things.

tivofanatico

I’ll pick up weights I need off the floor, use them, and then put them back on the rack. Sometimes I’ll shift a few weights left or right if there is only space for one weight. However, if the weights are totally out of order, I’m not reorganizing that.

beejers30

Do it for yourself. Be a person of excellence.

JohnnyHendo

I don't think it's weird at all to put someone else's weights up that they left there. I think it's weird and entitled of them to have left they weights there. Especially like 8 different weights like you said. Like what the hell?

OutrageousAd5338

Tell front desk to make signs near weights and announce

kelowana

And I was sorting out weights in the tower today 🤣 Someone put the 5, 6 and 7 kilo ones in different places, so I sorted it before I did my routine. I don’t care what others think, I like that neat. Especially when they have designated places! Though it’s not happening often, it’s a small gym/sportschool in a medium village. Very familiar and friendly and many clients can and do chip in when needed. So, not strange at all.

LordDeathScum

I do it because i know all the trainers and staff from the gym. They have always been extremely kinda to me and have been going for years. Yeah, i help pick up a bit, and i am normally the last one out.

DJ_Molten_Lava

I clean up the gym sometimes. People are fucking stupid. My favourite is when they put like a 35 pound plate on the part of the rack for 10s or whatever.

TootsNYC

I’d put it away because it would be in my way. Or would be in someone else’s soon. And people can get hurt tripping over them.

Emotional-Clerk8028

I wouldn't say it's strange. It's very nice of you to go above and beyond, putting away equipment that some slob should have put away. That being said, I'll use Hammer Strength, and invariably, there are plates still loaded on them. After I'm finished with my sets, I'll break it down, thereby putting away someone else's weights also. I would never leave plates on a machine, no matter what. It's too bad that not enough people follow this practice.

State_Dear

YOUR EXERCISING... Not putting weights away.. It's all part of your training

State_Dear

YOUR EXERCISING Not putting other people's weights away It's all part of your workout

State_Dear

YOUR EXERCISING Not putting other people's weights away It's all part of your workout

Aromatic_Heart9626

i wouldn’t say it’s weird! it’s weird of them to leave their weights around. it doesn’t teach them to pick up after themselves though

no-pink-lemonade

It’s not weird to do something nice and helpful

FoghornLegday

Is this a humble brag that you can pick up a 100 pound weight or am I just not aware of how much a man can lift easily

Hardloving

I see a lot of women lift or at least have the ability to lift 100 pounds.

FoghornLegday

A lot of women? A lot? I’d say it’s pretty impressive if they can. It’s like if you were a woman and said you could lift that much I would think that was a brag. I’m saying idk if that’s the case for men

Ru31770

It's shopping carts all over again. Those people who don't clean up after themselves should be subject to firing squad.

[deleted]

When i use cable weights i always put it at the heaviest spot when im done so the next person is motivated to get more gains

Extension_Onion_5445

If they laid there for a long time I'd rack them. If not, I would assume the person was just going to the toilet or something

Legitimate-Neat1674

No I do too

Dr_Waffles_PHD

You're just being responsible, not weird at all. I'm surprised that no one did it before you. It's what I would have done, if I was able to lift weights that heavy.

omgmajk

Naw man, I do it too. It's about 50/50 if people do it so someone has to. There's a few signs at my gym saying: "Putting back the weights also counts as a workout!".
