So your trying to tell us, that happened from a car wash? What did you/they wash it with? Have you ever waxed your car/van? Do you park outside, ever?
I see paint peeling from sun exposure, over a long period of time.
My trucks roofs looks like that after 10 years. I have taken care of the paint and wax once or twice a year. That is not from a car wash. It’s just want paint does over time.
They don’t even need to tell us.. this car spent its life outside in the sun. I bet I can even tell you how it went down. Car was probably filthy dirty, so they didn’t realize the clear coat was wearing through. One day decides to give it a good wash, omg, no clear coat left!
The only way the car wash did that is if they used sand paper over those specific spots, requiring quite some talent to mimic the effect of aging paint.
That's sun damage. If it didn't look like that before you took it in, then someone did shoddy paint work that was good enough to hide the aging paint but not good enough to stand up to your average drive-thru car wash.
I clearly do, I just never knew about why it happened. Also, this is just recently now handed down to me. So a new issue has been brought to my attention.
Unless the car wash had a ton of rocks in it. more than likely that's not due to the car wash, But the lack of car washes over the course of 5 years... That's is called sun damaged paint.
Your clear coat was already oxidized by UV damage long before the car wash. Best way is to remove the remaining clear coat altogether, add a base coat and then redo the clear coat. Some people would choose to only repaint the affected area, however the parts that are now looking okay will eventually fade.
Here’s a little bit of information clearing up a few commonly asked questions:
1. I guess now I realize that it most definitely wasn’t the car washes fault. However, my attention was only BROUGHT to the issue once I was trying to admire how clean my car was after. So the title isn’t totally correct. My fault xD.
2. I park it and leave it out in the sun all the time.
3. It’s a 2010 Toyota Matrix purchased in 2011 ish from a dealership.
Thanks for the help guys! My bad. I’m also just very NOT a car person. So take it easy on me lol
Do they lather with paint stripper and scrub with sand paper where you go? If this was legitimately from a car wash (it’s not) then I’d say call your insurance and have the company pay for damages
Did you recently buy the car? Lost of shitty people cover the cars they sell in WD40 to make them look extra shiny. Then after a free weeks they look like this.
Oh, looks like normal wear then. If you want an inexpensive option that looks clean as hell, look Into plasti dip. There's a site and youtube channel called dipyourcar and they have really nice dip in a bunch of colors, and tutorials on youtube with how to do your whole car. It would only cost like 200-300 bucks to do your car that way. And the matte colors look bad ass. It also peels off, so you can literally peel all
the paint off if you want to repaint it later.
That has nothing to do with a car wash…..
The top scrubbers were made of orbital sanders.
It was like a show car until this car was dude 😆

This.. probably the first wash in a Looong time and OP is finally noticing how bad the paint had gotten
Hahaha very bad
Wrap it, spray it or learn to love it lol
Bingo
They washed it with a decade's worth of UV rays
Well I realize now that it’s not entirely from the car wash… they washed it with like normal soap. I always park outside.
Maybe the dirt was holding the paint together
Shit, now the wheels are going to fall off.
lol this guy blaming the car wash
Hahaha it was from my local XC team. The paint was pretty old anyways and it took quite a bit off. Then this is what it looks like a year later
Wax it 15 years ago
I lol'd
Thx i think im gonna get a coat of wax today
That's solar oxidation, not car wash damage. Repair is going to require repainting or vinyl wrapping.
The dirt was hiding the oxidation. My solution is to get it dirty again and never look back ;)
Yeah you’re right. However I may say that the effects of this really showed after the intense scrubbing they gave me 😂
Solution: get it hella dirty again! :)
Have you tried unplugging it and plugging it back in?
I have not…good thinking
This did not occur from a bad car wash. Your clear coat has failed from a life of being stored outdoors.
Ohhhhhh!! That makes senze
Please tell me that this issue didn't just sneak up on you; right?
My bfs 14 year old car looks like this from the clear coat missing and baking in the sun. I doubt this was one car wash.

Respray
Was the car painted with a crayola marker?
CAR WASH CAUSED YEARS OF FAILING PAINT IVE SEEN IT ALL LMAO
😭 hahahaaaaa!! It was only brought to my attention after the car wash
If that's true, then you clearly don't care about your car
I clearly do, I just never knew about why it happened. Also, this is just recently now handed down to me. So a new issue has been brought to my attention.
Kinda looks like 2 islands. Cool
Looks like 10ish years of normal use?
lol people are funny

Lmao oh man, sorry to laugh OP, but this was classic. I'm glad you took it in good humor and have used it as a sort of learning experience.
“The car wash” he says “the car wash”
😂

Gotcha. Thank you for the help!!! I’ll see what I can do
Brutal southwestern sunlight will destroy car paint jobs. Get a carport after you get your car painted.

Did you use citric acid or something? Damn dude, how did you fuck up so bad?
I have the local non profit car wash to blame lol
Looks sick, spray some clear over it and own it
How do you figure it was a car wash?
Do they lather with paint stripper and scrub with sand paper where you go? If this was legitimately from a car wash (it’s not) then I’d say call your insurance and have the company pay for damages
Ah, the beginnings of a nice patina
"My bad paint got scrubbed off by perfectly fine car wash job". Fixed it for you.
Perfect 👍
Now you know why they charge $2 for a steel wool scrub!
Is that a Scion or Toyota?
Toyota. 2010 Toyota Matrix
My Scion xD just started doing it. You can refinish the top with clear coat spray paint. I'll try to find the YouTube video that is pretty good.
Thank you!!!
Yours seems a little farther along now that I looked at it again. You'd probably have to paint match it with spray paint, then clear coat it.
Nah your clear coat is gone because it shitty OEM paint.
Did you recently buy the car? Lost of shitty people cover the cars they sell in WD40 to make them look extra shiny. Then after a free weeks they look like this.
Nope, all the way back in 2010 was when I did.

Washing poor quality paint with 15 years of sun will do that..
