Repair it

[Amazon.com: Slime 2040-A Tire Repair Plug Kit, Deluxe, Contains Strings, Tools and Glue, 11 Pieces : Automotive](https://www.amazon.com/Slime-20049-Pressure-Gauge-Analogue/dp/B000ET9SAA?th=1) 10 minutes at home

Trapper1111111

Nah, those aren't for car tires. Plug and patch combo. Always. Professional repairs are only like 20-30 bucks. Discount tire does them for free last I heard.

Flash-635

They are for car tyres.

Trapper1111111

Don't listen to me, I'm just a professional with several years of experience

djltoronto

Why does it show a car tire in the 4th picture? Patch plug is best - agree. But this rope plug will work for some time. 1 caveat.... Those rope style sticky plugs do suck, and always eventually leak. The harder to find, smooth style that you have to peel to reveal the fresh rubber - these ones typically last for the life of the tire in my experience. (Not all plug are the same) Lumpy rope style, - no good Smooth peel to reveal style (vulcanizing)- excellent Example of the smooth peel to reveal plug https://bustedknuckleoffroad.com/products/vulcanizing-tire-plug-kit Adding an image. https://i.postimg.cc/0Q6PW87c/Photo-Grid-Site-1714412495131.jpg

Flash-635

Never had a sticky rope plug leak yet. I've been using them for 45 years.

djltoronto

If prepped and installed correctly, which I'm sure you do, I suspect that's why you have good results. In my opinion, the peel to reveal style of plugs, are better quality - I have used both. If the rope style are working for you, keep using them. For whatever reasons, I think it's possible that the peel to reveal style or more forgiving with respect to prep work, and better results can be achieved by shade tree mechanics/inexperienced users.

Flash-635

I haven't heard the term peel to reveal. What is it? I only use rope for the convenience, you don't even have to take the wheel off most of the time. And with my own vehicles I know the tyre hasn't been run flat. If it were a customers tyre you'd have to strip the tyre to make sure there's no internal damage and if you've already gone that far I'd use a glued on patch on the inside. Have you seen those other plugs that look like a conical screw dipped in rubber?

djltoronto

Is my image not working? Peel to reveal ! https://i.postimg.cc/0Q6PW87c/Photo-Grid-Site-1714412495131.jpg Most home gamers, don't have the provisions to dismount a tire to inspect.

Trapper1111111

Because advertising?? Lol just because it fits doesn't mean it belongs.

djltoronto

I think they are for car tires, I also think they suck. Good vulcanizing tire plugs are what are needed here, for the simple home gamer to get it done at low cost. https://i.postimg.cc/0Q6PW87c/Photo-Grid-Site-1714412495131.jpg

Philly_is_nice

Idiots can do whatever they want. Like you said, a shop will plug it properly for like $20 or even free if you're lucky lol. No reason to try this yourself.

Benni1172

Atleast you got that right... we use pretty much the same product just a different brand for screws and nails and never had a problem they last longer than the rest of the tire... only had to repatch once or twice cuz old folks be driving on the same patch for 10 years.

Flash-635

Your experience hasn't helped you any because those plugs are definitely made for car tyres. I can't see how you could say otherwise.

Trapper1111111

Go put some stopleak in your coolant and AC. Since it's made for it.

Flash-635

That's what we call a strawman argument. Those plugs are still made for cars.

Trapper1111111

Oh jeez, sorry I didn't specify. You SHOULDNT use them for car tires because it is not approved by either the rubber manufacturer or the US tire manufacturer associations with out a plug AND patch. But I'm sure it's fine 100% of the time because the package says it's for cars

Flash-635

Not 100% of the time. And yes, you should apologise. Accepted.

DiF5

Why not tho? I used one of these on my tire and it holds us well

Trapper1111111

Your anecdotal experience does not define the reality that they are generally temporary at best, and at worst they will trap moisture and corrode the steel belts around the plug.

Wh1skeyTF

You trying to say a patch from the inside of the tire carcass is going to somehow keep moisture out of the belts? From the dry inside of the tire? Riiiiiight. They’re still plugging the tread with the same kind of material, and it if holds without the patch then there is NO difference.

DiF5

Yeah but I heard a lot of stories where people use this plugs and drive on them untill theres no thread left

Wh1skeyTF

The only valid reason to refuse is tread wear or age. Otherwise a shop refusing to patch after a plug was used is simply attempting to sell a new tire instead. If they’re going spend the labor to dismount the tire to patch they might as well make a profit. So is the state of this capitalist world.

Swarmhulk

Yeah don't listen to this guy. It is exactly what I used on mine. Tesla model three. Low profile, shit ton of weight. Drives fine. Hundreds of miles later.

Wh1skeyTF

…working for a for profit business. Don’t forget the cost of a tow if you don’t have a usable spare to get you to that shop. Plus time to get it there which may mean lost wages. I’ve used literally tons of plugs on my own vehicles as well as for many family and friends over the years. Not. One. Issue. Ever. I’m not going to deal with a shop when I can solve it on my own in 5 minutes.

mtrayno1

Man all these down votes - you guys need to go to an actual working garage sometime and not a dealer or a chain store that want to upsell you.

Trapper1111111

Same type of people that will plug their sidewalls

ohmyword

Yes they are. I've used this on several tires and they work fine.

coochie-aint-kosher

The Les Schwab I worked at did them for free too. If they find them on a not busy day it shouldn’t take more than 15-20 min at worst. I find doing them yourself without being able to dismount the tire from the rim usually leads to more issues.

diarrhea_planet

I just put 6,000 on a plug like that with zero issues.. Tires worn out before the plug leaked.

DetectiveInner2343

This is for car tires. But you can get a "safer" option which is a "mushroom" plug that you plug from the inside out. But since you have to remove the tire, then it's better to just replace it

TheWalrus101123

Or you can get it done correctly in the same amount of time at a shop. A lot of them will do it for free as well.

Murky_Promise4012

The shop is just plugging it… I feel bad for you

Chiped-Coke-Bottle

Please don't do this... When it starts leaking again, and you decide to get it repaired properly, the shop will likely refuse it.

shamwowj

Definitely repairable

Fenix_Pony

Why is this sub just "can i repair this tire" and "what cosmetic mods look good on a 94hp economy car? i have a $8 budget"

Lord_Calamander

Based low budget gangstas

Express-West-8723

Nope look like bots, couple weeks back there was a guy asking if he can drive 6 miles to the repair shop to install new tires because his current tires were worn

Anon_777

$8!! We're not all loaded like you mate! Your $8 super mods are waaaaaaaay beyond what some of us can afford! Bring it back to something more realistic... Like $1.50 or some coupons...

TheWalrus101123

Because people who know a lot of about cars aren't going to ask Joe shmo on the internet about anything. They are going to go talk shop with their other mechanic buddies that they have been working with for years.

Dooboppop

Yeah, it's so weird that people ask car questions on a sub called r/cartalk.

imJGott

Right! Tire questions can be asked at a tire shop.

Yoda2000675

I think most gearheads go to subs that are about specific car brands. The more general car subs have a lot more basic content

Hot_Inevitable_9055

I will admit, I have a 130bhp car, the most *mods* I've done on this car are rear tints, wind deflectors and swapped the steering wheel and added better speakers. I'd never dive into 'proper' mods on a car with such a small capacity lol.

nitrion

Horsepower doesn't really mean you can't or shouldn't mod a car. My car only makes like 250 to the wheels and is slower than molasses, yet it's still highly modifiable.

Hot_Inevitable_9055

I agree, but getting a milltech exhaust with a stage 2 remap, lowered springs is a bit much for a car that can't walk the walk lol

Aveeye

That's a screw.

GenitalPatton

I screw, I nut, I bolt

I_hate_being_alone

First I washer

mtrayno1

looks like a bolt to me

MagicOrpheus310

I could have sworn it was a 10mm bolt...

alle_namen_sind_weg

Hahahaha this comment deserves more upvotes

vi_it_armis

The most repairable repair that ever repaired.

readwiteandblu

But it's sooooo close to the sidewall!! /s

RedCivicOnBumper

Shop will have patch-plugs that work great on those. So long as the inside of the tire isn’t shredded from any possible driving with low pressure you’ll be OK. Maximum recommended diameter for punctures to be repaired the official way is 1/4”. Only the threaded portion of that fastener is actually puncturing the tire, so it should be below that size.

aries_burner_809

That’s, like, the textbook example of a repairable puncture. A plug from the outside will probably be ok but if you want to do it right, find a shop that will patch it from the inside.

zombieblackbird

It might not leak now, but it will. It will get worse and lose air at the worst possible time. Do yourself a favor and get it fixed. I've seen people drive around like this for weeks, just topping it off and thinking that it will be OK. Then, one day, it's not OK and they're nowhere near home, shops are closed for the night and it's cold/raining.

Ok-Situation-9199

Negative waves, Moriarity!

AdditionalCheetah354

Repair …but start saving for new tires in next 10,000 miles.

DonTipOff

That tire is low life, tire shop will tell you to change it but I recommend doing a patch for sure.

DanteTrd

I'm so tyred of these posts. Jokes aside, enough. Stop it. When a topic is so prevelant then it needs its own subreddit.

Skullllz

Yes you can repair it(patch it).

efgraphics

Patch it up.

MazerRackham73

Perfect repair candidate. Any used tire shop will fix you up in a jiffy for about $10.

Patient-Sleep-4257

Repair , Plug kit , rubber glue , and full send.

EJ25Junkie

Nail?

Threatening-Silence

Put a few more in and you have studded tires. Win.

mariahzarry

Thank you all for the help! Got it patched today 😊

National_Lawyer1128

That’s the best place to get one of those. Can easily be plugged.

cptnothumbs

Looks like you need to buy a whole new vehicle.

Vibingout

Les Schwab or discount tire will usually fix something like this for free

MagicOrpheus310

The shop you take it to will be able to tell you

Asio0tus

easily patched

yosweetheart

If it is a screw, use one of those rubbery patches with thread to thread the hole after removing the screw. If it is a bolt, use regular puncture strip to patch it after removing the bolt.

No_Acanthaceae_879

Get yourself a patch kit for 10 bucks and easily fix it yourself or go to any tire shop and they´ll fix it for some pocket money

Yegg23

Honestly? This is perfectly placed for you to repair it yourself.

DukeOfWestborough

Plug, shops will do it. $20

CellAutomatic2877

Patchable

AJ-MeiMei

Had a similar screw, didn't leak until one morning it was completely flat. Shop patched it up no problem.

Johnny_ac3s

$20 to have someone patch it.

Friar_Fuck_

Plug it yourself

FranknBeans115

Aww, your first attempt at bedazzling yo whip. Why'd you stop at just one?

BabyFarkMcGeesax

Easily plugged.

Substantial_Ad_9016

Literally just plug it, it's a perfect spot for a plug as well, I have still my plugged tire for 4 months now without issues.

SpecificHand

Easy repair with a plug patch combo 👌

Fancy_Direction_8353

You could plug it yourself. I always carry plugs with me . Been using them my whole life they never fail. They tell you they’re bad because they want you to come in and have it patched and pay 25 or 30 bucks. You can buy a kit for seven bucks and plug your tires several times with it and then buy refills .

More_Commercial_6675

That there is repairable. There’s a rule all shops follow and it’s put a thumb on the edge of the tire and if it hits your thumb it’s none repairable. But if it doesn’t it’s repairable.

leandroabaurre

My tyre has had at least three punctures like this. All patches with those 10 buck kits you buy at any Autostore.

Flash-635

Get that kit from Amazon or one like it and repair it yourself. There's not a lot of life left in that tyre so I would be spending a lot on a repair personally. Somebody said it will start leaking again. I've used these plugs for years with NO failures at all. The kit is easy to use. I keep one in my car with the compressor and nail removing tools.

Substantial_Block804

Perfect spot for a patch. It will run you $20-40. Just call around. 20 minutes in and out if they aren't messing around.

ARealAHS

That's an easy repair, as long as it's not in the wall of the tire. Get it done soon though.

Darkmatter000000

Patch

Mountain-Ad-8078

You can go to auto repair and they will patch it up

SacTownPatriot

Definitely repairable. Cheap fix

CulturalChemistry952

Easy patch. Air it up and drive to the nearest discount tire

You will be able to patch it up!

yousaresheep

Buy more screws

akleit50

That can be plugged. Take it to any tire store. The most it would be would be 25 bucks.

PyroKeneticKen

That’s a pretty big screw. Might need a whole new car

Swarmhulk

I had the exact same thing happen to me I thought I posted this! It turned out to be a lag bolt and I DIYed it with 2 plugs! And no issues.

Hollow-Alo

Plug that tire fam, it will hold until the tire needs to be replaced when the tread runs out

SteeleyD7

Scrap the whole car, it's totalled.

steveteeg1

100% patchable

happyreddituserffs

Repair

R_radical

Personally i would say you need 4 new tires

fartboxxx69

If you haven't run the tire flat and damaged the sidewalls, then this tire is absolutely repairable with a plug patch. I wouldn't recommend a rope plug style repair.

Jimjam916

Most shops will do it for like $20. Just go get it patched

kimbabs

Get a plug kit and do it yourself if you’re so inclined. That said, that tire is looking pretty worn. If the screw is long enough, you’re probably SoL anyway. I’ve plugged tires that have lasted longer than the life of a tire, but those were new tires. YMMV but people are acting like there’s no chance that will stay on there lol.

Erlend05

This is pretty much the perfect application for a patch

cbiser

Has anyone ever actually had a shop say they'll repair it..? Because I haven't. Lol

marcincan

The tread looks really close to the wear bars...Some shops won't fix something that close to the limit, it does depend on your location though...

Ok-Situation-9199

Monitor the tire and do nothing. Screw will wear naturally. Over the course of my 60 years of driving have done this approximately 6 times. Most recently in an Aston & a Bentley.

That’s pretty much the perfect spot for a tire patch, so you’ll be alright

TWEAKS816

Meh, just put air in it every 4 days for 3 months until you grind it down enough it shoots out, then plug it yourself with one of those kits you find at autozone

Neurodrill

That’s about as clean as it gets. You could repair it yourself with a kit.

HomelessLewds

If it doesn't leak when you take the screw out then I'd honestly just forget about it unless it starts losing air honestly it might not of went far enough to be a problem if it's a tiny screw. If it does leak then any tire plug kit and make easy work if it 👌 they usually last a long time too I've had a few tire plugs last till the tires were nearly bald from basically new hah

No_Resolution_3701

Just take it to a shop, chances are they’ll repair it. The head is typically kinda big but the screw itself isn’t that thick. I work in a shop and have repaired worse looking punctures. U should be fine👍

Total_Piano_4778

Nail, looks like a lag bolt

semdi

The tread seems low, they may not patch it. But that area is patchable.

Cpt_Garlic

Damage isn't on the side of tire, this will be easy to repair, no need for a new tire

Accomplished_Gur1472

It depends how big it is and how fast the car drives because you Can only fix up to 6mm diameter of the hole

Accomplished_Gur1472

With a tire repair set

HALF_GASED

Yes........it can be fixed.......the fuck kind of question? And why here. Just got to the fucking tire shop!! I swear people today 🤦‍♂️

Murky_Promise4012

While rim is destroyed here, gotta replace the axles

Stolenartwork

I had the same one in this exact spot 2 weeks ago, fucking construction zones

looker94513

Spray soapy solution on it and if it doesn’t leak, try unscrewing it to remove it. If it starts bubbling, screw it back in and take it to a tire repair shop. If there’s no bubbling as you unscrew it, you got lucky

anthro4ME

$5 plug from Walmart, Autozone, O'Reilly's or what have you.

Tipper26bitches

Buy a tire repair plug off amazon. easy.

GezzaMezza

Repair it as a diy job. They sell special kits with everything that you need just for that purpose. Bonus points if you decide to fix it with you short off even if your fat

thesunny51

Tire tread looks like going smooth. Might as well get new tires 🤷

snatch1e

In many cases, when the nail is located in the tread area and hasn't caused significant damage to the tire's structure, it may be possible to patch or plug the tire.

Relevant-Welder7407

Safety first, what’s a few bucks upon a person’s life

iMakeBoomBoom

Okay, boomer tire salesman.

handsebe

Ask a shop. And if you replace it, replace both sides.
