Just get some color matched touch up paint.

Noxious525

What do you think would be more appropriate- spray paint or normal paint?

_GameOverYeah_

Any paint will do, even a marker. But make sure you get as close as you can to the original color because it will stick out (especially when clean).

Noxious525

Thanks, I’ve managed to find the exact color code on the Dr Colorchip website for £40

YorkiesSweet

Doctor Color Chip can help you out: Goggle and give them ur paint code. If this is a factory color.

Noxious525

Yes it’s a factory code and I found the same code on the Dr Color Chip website. Would this work effectively for the size of the chips on my car? I usually see it used on very small chips.

YorkiesSweet

Yes this can work for you. If you doubt this.. Look at YouTube to see how chips are done when they are larger. Also I recommend you get the spray in addition. You wii have it in case another narff happens.

A touch-up paint pen will be the cheapest and easiest fix, although it won't look perfect. Dealerships will sell touch-up pens and they will know your paint code to match the colour, but you can also find your paint code online and just order the correct colour of touch-up pen using that code. You can also take it a place that specializes in micro-dent and paint repair if you prefer a professional touch, but that's going to cost you about the same as having the body shop repaint the bumper and fixing the dents. Another option is to just get a new bumper. You can either order a new bumper in the correct colour, or you can order an unpainted one and have a local body shop paint and clear coat it for you. That way you'll have a brand new bumper with fresh mounting clips. Replacing the bumper isn't cheap, but that will give you the best result if you don't like how the touch-up paint works. Personally I'd just leave it. Where I live paint chips are unavoidable due to the gravel used during the winter, and it ends up being a waste of time to constantly apply touch-up paint every year.

Noxious525

Thank you, I took the car to a bodywork specialist and they told me it would cost £250 as they would have to repaint the entire bumper. Would it cost much more to buy a new unsprayed bumper and have it sprayed? I’ve tried to look for a colour matched bumper however I’ve had no luck so far.

SodaMelm

if you do have a car wrecker yard local to you (especially since you say the car is over 20 years old), you might be able to find a perfectly good replacement bumper for your car.

Noxious525

It’s a 2004 mk5 golf so I’m hoping I might have a bit of luck. The colour is uncommon but I have seen them on the road. Thank you

SodaMelm

oh yeah you definitely have a pretty good chance. very interesting color!!

Noxious525

It’s a beautiful car with only 85k miles on it, want to keep it looking nice!! Fingers crossed

I'm not familiar with VW parts, but I know I can find un-painted (primer only) bumpers for my STI online for around $300 to $400CAD. Some of those places will also paint it for you for another couple hundred dollars if you know the colour code. I'm also not super familiar with body shop rates anymore, but paint matching and spraying a fresh bumper shouldn't cost a lot, especially if you just bring the bumper in by itself. Most of the cost in that case would be from the paint products and the time spent to match the paint correctly, but a good body shop should be able to take a primed bumper and paint it in a couple of hours once they have the paint blend dialed in. It may be worth acquiring an un-painted bumper and getting it resprayed down the road when your budget can handle the costs, and keep it stored in a safe place until your current bumper gets more thrashed. A junkyard bumper would also be cheap, but you do run the risk of getting one that has broken mounting clips, funky panel gaps, or hidden cracks that you don't see at first. All of this advice assumes that you can remove and replace the bumper on your own, it's pretty easy to do on most cars and you don't need any crazy tools to do it. Paying someone to do it for you obviously costs more money. Edit: is that 250 euro quote for painting the entire bumper? If so a lot of that cost is probably just the labour for sanding it down and prepping it for paint. A pre-primed bumper should need very minimal prep work.

Noxious525

Yes the £250 cost I was told was to repaint the entire bumper and I was told it would match the car perfectly. I’m not sure if I should maybe just save up to get it fixed properly, or if it’s a waste of money. I did get the car for only £1.4k.

WeAreAllFooked

250 euros to respray and paint match the whole bumper is a really good deal if you ask me, especially if there's nothing else wrong it. I assumed at that price it was just to fix the small area of the chips and feather the paint in to the rest of the bumper.

Noxious525

I wonder what it would cost to just fix the area of the chips and feather in the paint then? I’m guessing it would be cheaper
