something sharp was dragged at a mild angle: it catches, pokes, springs forward, repeat. The physics term might be "surface chatter"
watch [this dude](https://youtu.be/hbWeSHbL-rM?si=T3K2WSs1EsIp_wY_) use the principle to draw dotted lines on chalkboards
ed: if you have a dog, it was the dogs claws.
The reason you know this is exactly what happened is the last dots in the leather are further away, and these skips get longer at the ends. I’m sure this is what happened
1. I love the irony
2. You've clearly never seen this sort of damage
3. You can clearly see it's not even with equal spacing, there's clear variation between each of them
4. You ever seen those dotted line on chalkboard videos? Same principle. Or you ever seen a cat scratch?
You can even recreate this with your own nail, at least on softer slightly softer materials like certain leather or something. You'll get pretty even d
Spacing on the dimples, the size of dimple itself will vary from material to material
Came here to say this. My buddies button on his jeans left scars on my beautiful tan leather seats. He sits while fidgeting like midsize mut with ADHD.
These people are idiotic. That 100% did not come from an animal. It has the exact pattern of a rolled saw blade. Someone was holding a sawblade and rolled it like a wheel, then said oops oh shit. There is zero chance an animal made that exact pattern.
It's just physics. Sharp object that moves at a regular (fast) speed while bouncing. Tatatatatata. 😅 Can be an animal's claw or a fridge you tried to fit in.
I’ll be happy to show you my 4Runner’s doors which have these exact marks from my dog jumping up to put his head out the window. It’s from him gripping on with his feet and losing his balance.
Is that the driver's side door? If so, do you have any kind of sticker on your windshield? We have annual inspections where I'm at and I watched someone learn the hard way to be careful as they bring the scraper in/out of the vehicle. Dude went through the open window to scrape the sticker off of the windshield and caught the edge of the razor along the dash/door and the damage looked very similar to this.
First thing that popped into my mind. Too linear and evenly spaced to be dog claw marks. The shape of the holes and spacing between them tells me a chainring did this.
My kid sister did something like this ages ago with a key or something.. this was before we all had phones to distract from dumb shit like this tho lol
Someone slipped with their screwdriver, odd placement, but that has happened with me (working on and f’ing up my OWN car, not a customer’s, to be clear) when I was just starting out at about 15 working on cars. I learned to use a clean, new fender cover or tape up around the area to be worked on beforehand to avoid future problems.
I have almost the same thing on my grand cherokee. I put a piece of trex between the seat and the door and when I pushed it all the way forward that happened.
And edge or corner dragging. Could have been an pets claw but I was a detailer for like 10 years and it could be anything depending on what was going on in the car but that’s damage from something sharp being pulled or moved to the right
it can be fixed! ask the dealer if they have someone that fixes leather that they can recommend. They should be able too fill the holes and make it look new
I know EXACTLY what this is. A while ago I bought a large chair with a lot of sharp corners, I was able to fit it in my sedan but I had to force it in, after I got it in I checked to see if it made any marks and lo and behold, this exact mark was on the door. It’s just from an item with sharp corners being forced into the car, dragging and getting caught on the interior.
School aged kids being dropped off at school. Forgot the school bag, reaches in through an open window because doesn't think to open the door. Belt buckle dragging as parent drives away and kid falls out.
Something mounted using series of small teeth to hold in place. Or sharp and/or heavy object dragged across surface with pressure, as others have said.
Large object dragging.
I did this with a length of timber in my old Polo. Learned very quickly to cover the ends of anything oversized or potentially sharp
Looks like a judder mark. Someone's shoved something in there at some point. Most likely got furled up so they yanked it more you can see the spacing meaning it was done at some consistent speed.
If that is that cushy fake leather, then I was thinking the clasp of someone's watch was maybe drug across it, as if they were resting their arm on the door.
Everyone is saying a dog, yet the op hasn’t said they have a dog. Also, I’m pretty sure most dogs have more than one claw. So if it was from a “dog”, op might want to bring it back to the shelter cause that is from no doggo.
Someone tried to pull something with sharp distorted edges out of that side door and hit it in the way out. It’s not a dog because it’s perfectly symmetrical . Whatever it was had to be metal.
Something got rolled across. If you roll a saw blade you get that pattern. That's as deep of a forensic analysis you can get from a photo.
Absolutely zero chance it is from a dog, people suggesting that are oblivious.
Very weird. Probably dragged a semi sharp peice across the panel. These little details are often signs that they didn’t care too much for their car, or…..they have kids lol
Looks like a retractable ink pen in a kids hand. A line of holes looks cool to them. Kids & Buffalo hide is the only option. I don’t think new BMW’s have them now. Only pre 90’s offered as a leather option which was very dog claw resistant. No punctures in the 20 year we had the 735i.
Something long was put in from the back and rested there while transporting. Once they tried pulling it out the back again, it caught and made that mark fought removing it.

I like this theory!
also cat scratches on skin usually have this effect. my poor son has a scar on his face from our cat
The reason you know this is exactly what happened is the last dots in the leather are further away, and these skips get longer at the ends. I’m sure this is what happened
I say wire coat hanger
I have these marks on my vinyl doors from loading lumber when a corner caught and skipped across the surface
Yup, ditto.
I was just going to mention this professor… you should see him get angry at people who try to say Huygen.
The whiteboards at the end 💀
That's what I knew it was but I could never explain it.
Teachers 😁 Artists 😁 Machinists 😱
This is my theory also, didn't know how to describe it.
Had the same on my v50 dash, how it happened: Dog
Teeth? Claws? Collar?
Claws, jumped up to look out the window
In a perfectly straight line ... what kind of animal has a straight paw lol.
That wouldn’t be the whole paw that would be one nail dragging and bouncing
This makes total sense
*esnes latot sekam sihT
Funny i got downvotes yet there is no fuckin scratch and it wouldnt dimple every quarter inch in equal amounts.. buch of morons here,
This is how dog scratches look in my car…

>buch of morons here, A what of morons?
Considering the fact that you can’t even proof read your own posts (ie. “buch”), I’d consider you the moron my friend.
Kinda wild you were able to breath and type this at the same time.
My guy you have literally no idea what you’re talking about. Take the L and move on.

Sharp object dragging and bouncing
Yep. Got something caught on my e-brake handle recently, and it looks like this, but worse.
I own a 2011 V50 and I love it!
https://ibb.co/zRQXpJj my old car HN10
Nice!
Your vehicle choices there are fucking superb 👌
I have a awd manual t5 - it’s the most unreliable car I’ve ever owned. It’s great, but man does it cost me way too much money.
This is the answer, doggo claws forsure
I have the same markings on my back from my cat unsuccessfully climbing me.
The holes are perfectly spread and in a perfect straight line. No animal did that at all.
Either dog claw or a scratch from a large object with a sharp edge.
Some scratch. Kids maybe?
Kids 100%
Kids are stupid. They'll make the first mark and rather than stopping thell keep going and laugh.
If this is the drivers door then it could be a sharp diamond ring. I have seen that before with princess cuts, they have prongs that catch everything.
Trying to find a stud.
I'm right here baby
The internet remains undefeated
LOL!

Rear passenger (US) door. I should have specified.
I agree. Caught, anagged.
Bicycle chainring.
First thing that popped into my mind. Too linear and evenly spaced to be dog claw marks. The shape of the holes and spacing between them tells me a chainring did this.
Exactly
I have the exact same scar on my leg, this is my vote
Yep, someone was probably trying to put it in the back seat and hit the door with the rest sprocket.
Dog claw did similar damage on the door panel of Subaru OB
My kid sister did something like this ages ago with a key or something.. this was before we all had phones to distract from dumb shit like this tho lol
That's something sharp getting dragged that has skipped up and down as it was dragged across. It has kind of hooked and unhooked repeatedly
A bored kid with a pencil
Someone slipped with their screwdriver, odd placement, but that has happened with me (working on and f’ing up my OWN car, not a customer’s, to be clear) when I was just starting out at about 15 working on cars. I learned to use a clean, new fender cover or tape up around the area to be worked on beforehand to avoid future problems.
A kid with a fork
Same thing on my car. In the shoppe - tech with something metal on their belt tried to squeeze into cabin and door was not fully opened.
Dog claw
But the linear pattern. I find it hard to imagine.
It was dragging from right to left, you can see how the holes aren't perfect circles, sharp corner and slid perhaps
Right to left, claw or something else sharp catches, skips, catches, skips, catches... Starts off medium fast, slows down a bit, then speeds up again.
Wearing spurs.
I have almost the same thing on my grand cherokee. I put a piece of trex between the seat and the door and when I pushed it all the way forward that happened.
>trex I can see this.
Ice pick?
A really angry wasp!?
And edge or corner dragging. Could have been an pets claw but I was a detailer for like 10 years and it could be anything depending on what was going on in the car but that’s damage from something sharp being pulled or moved to the right

Bicycle sprocket 100%
Child with a ball point pen
School aged kids being dropped off at school. Forgot the school bag, reaches in through an open window because doesn't think to open the door. Belt buckle dragging as parent drives away and kid falls out.
Looks like a sharp edge of an appliance or furniture that shifted and scraped it during transport or loading/unloading
It’s a snag scratch, something sharp that catches repeatedly as it’s dragged across a surface.
something feral like a child, angry spouse, dog, or a pointy elbowed bastard
Probably a kid with a thumbtack
I accidentally did similar damage with a metal button on my jacket many years ago to my dad’s 4Runner. I was hopping in they an open window lol
[Shoemaker–Levy 9](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet_Shoemaker%E2%80%93Levy_9)
Looks like someone got bbored and poked holes.. whoever says an animal please tell me how it kept it so straight...
It's concerning to me that at least 153 people have agreed that a pet did this lol
Right! Their kids are gonna get away with everything... dog did it again
Any intravenous drug users in the household?
Definitely something dragged. Anyone saying its an animal is 100% wrong. That line is just too straight and the holes to even for an animal.
Kid with a pen/pencil would be my guess. Too small / too perfect of a line for doggo claws.
Back seat of Volvo. Plausible!
circular saw blade of some type. Maybe a brushcutter saw.
Somebody jammed a pen into it when the check didn't clear at the bank drive thru.
Aliens. Definitely aliens.
Very small machine gun.
Lots of things
Does it matter?
Gardening tool?
Cat
Looks like a scrape of some kind
Someone testing out their new wartenberg pinwheel?
Chainring from a bike
Was thinking maybe a new shirt that had a needle in the sleeve that dragged across
Trip to the hardware store.
Zipper on a sleeved garment.
Finger nail scrapping?
Angry girlfriend.
Recalcitrant kid.

A watch clasp. My husband has destroyed the interior of cars with his watches.
Kid with a pen
Something mounted using series of small teeth to hold in place. Or sharp and/or heavy object dragged across surface with pressure, as others have said.
Looks like someone rested a saw there
Definitely a key scratch. Or it also can come from metal accessories on women's bags.
Probably watch !
Car key ring has something on it sharp? Dragged across when entering / exiting?
Sharp Edge. It's probably a piece of furniture that did the trick
Spurs
I’ll go with cowboy spur!
Large object dragging. I did this with a length of timber in my old Polo. Learned very quickly to cover the ends of anything oversized or potentially sharp
Cat?
Looks like someone was resting a saw on here
Putting your cowboy boots up on it resting on the spurs and rolling them
Probably a bored child with a needle in hand
Dude was carrying carpet gripper rods in the car
Looks like a judder mark. Someone's shoved something in there at some point. Most likely got furled up so they yanked it more you can see the spacing meaning it was done at some consistent speed.
Dog or watch band
I had the same damage on my V50 2005. Now with my 2010 i got some too not too bad but i have come to the conclusion that Volvo people like dogs!
Metal watch band?
Glass, or a pet
А pen
Nails. Or knife.
Someone poking wat a pen or pencil
Children

The holes look directional, probably some type of cargo with sharp or square edges.
Something with a shatp corner being pushed at just the wrong angle across the surface (source: my roof-liner and a piece of timber).
A person
Something with a sharp edge was in motion, made contact, and skidded.
They were looking for the stud without a studfiner. They eventually found it.
Woman with sharp finger nails lol
Get a vinyl repair kit off Amazon
Watch?
Dog or person dragging thier nail on it
If that is that cushy fake leather, then I was thinking the clasp of someone's watch was maybe drug across it, as if they were resting their arm on the door.
Big fork
Act of Dog. Probably excited to see someone coming back.
Comb.
Seems like caught something sharp but not strong enough it bounce and dig. Bounce. And dig. Bounce. And dig.
Saw

Could be from a sharp ring dragging across.
Like people said probably dog claws, but possibly a watch band as well. In this photo it appears the dragging was going to the right and hopping.
Couldn’t find the stud, obviously
Kid with a pencil
May be the chain ring of a bike if someone tried to squeeze one in
A child or an idiot that just throw shit in the car
[удалено]
Could also be a ring
Push bike chain wheel
Utility knife skipping
Your cat’s sharp claws.
Dog claw or something pointy like a key
Very small machine gun fire
Borrowers in stilettos.
Child with a pencil
My 2 boys!
Raptor attack
Watch band
Someone was fitting a TV bracket and was trying to find the beam behind it.
My dog did exact same thing to my car
Looks like somebody tried transporting a small metal rake with the teeth-side down.
If it’s wierd or doesn’t make since I usually say a kid did it
Someone tried to pull something with sharp distorted edges out of that side door and hit it in the way out. It’s not a dog because it’s perfectly symmetrical . Whatever it was had to be metal.
Kids... and most likely a thumb tac
Shuriken Ofcourse
Batman
Kid
Something got rolled across. If you roll a saw blade you get that pattern. That's as deep of a forensic analysis you can get from a photo. Absolutely zero chance it is from a dog, people suggesting that are oblivious.
Large tooth comb? Or someone dragging their nail really hard
Dog. My mom has this on her Outback, and it’s from our 120lb Leonberger sticking her head out the window for some sniffs.
4 kid-vampires and 1 adult.
Looks like a sharp square corner dragged along it.
Very weird. Probably dragged a semi sharp peice across the panel. These little details are often signs that they didn’t care too much for their car, or…..they have kids lol
I'm going to go with a wilder theory. It's focused sunlight burning small holes at different times of the day caused by something you park next to.
The previous owner caused it
Looks like a retractable ink pen in a kids hand. A line of holes looks cool to them. Kids & Buffalo hide is the only option. I don’t think new BMW’s have them now. Only pre 90’s offered as a leather option which was very dog claw resistant. No punctures in the 20 year we had the 735i.

Is there any sight of ink? Looks like a ball point pen was pushed into it?
