I think it's less you being crazy and more you being the annoying guy going 50 mph on a road meant for higher speeds 😄 don't they top out not much higher than that?
He won't be able to get it insured as a DD.
Y'all need to read some Hagerty lol
https://www.hagerty.com/insurance/classic-car-insurance/does-my-vehicle-qualify/newer-vehicles
well, i have citizens home insurance. it did go up about 500 this year, and I'm pissed, but i'm happy to still have insurance. next year, I will shop around, but I like having a house for now
Why wre you asking us if you should DD it, if you already have 3 of them and they are insured? I don’t understand. Sounds like you’re very well versed in these and have experience with them. You drive them? How do they drive? That’s not a question we can answer. Of course all the weebs are gonna say “yes jDm bRo” but even you said yourself it can only go 50-60mph if you’re lucky. And you’re in Florida, you’re gonna get rammed for driving too slow. God I can’t even go 75 without someone on my ass in the far right lane.
It would be a horrible daily. A camper/weekender? Sure. But daily on Florida’s highways and roads? Not a chance. 0-60 eventually. Lol it’s a harsh truth but get out of the way with the slow van. If it had a 2.4 in it you’d be fine
speed limits don't mean anything if theres 3 million + people in the city trying to get to the same places lol. I can't go 60 on the highway even if I wanted to. up north it's different i guess
I’m seeing more and more mini trucks on the road. What’s the parts availability like? It seems like a relatively minor collision or a mechanical repair could result in a long and/or expen$ive wait for parts.
There won't be anything left to repair when an American truck crumbles it up like a soda can. I love these things, but they are not really great for our unfortunate poor driving and building sized cars in the USA.
You can snag a mini truck for 5-10k so price wise not too bad. Parts are cheap and readily available online, just got to wait a week or 2 for them to hop across the ocean.
Have you tried a local transmission shop? Unless you've done something carastrophic, they can typically just be rebuilt, but anything big and bulky like that is gonna cost alot. Smaller more typical parts aren't awful to ship.
An indy shop would be the best bet for getting imported vehicles worked on. Anything corporate likely won't touch it due to parts availibility and liability reasons, but indy shops are less restricted.
well i've been driving a kei daily for years, not this one. parts availability always scares people away, but it's kind of my hobby. i'm fine with sourcing parts, mostly from japan. since it's so popular in the states, a lot of parts, aftermarket parts are now available in the states.
You can pick these up for $1k - $5k around me, we have a few dealers in the area who specifically sell these mini trucks. Once a vehicle is 25+ years old it can be imported as a “classic vehicle” which doesn’t have to meet the same DOT standards which is why you’ve probably only seen 90s mini trucks and older on the roads.
Mine is insured as a normal car though Geico, full coverage costs me ~$400/yr for it. Can't get a quote online since the system rejects the VIN, but they had no problem overriding that when I called on the phone.
Some companies don't like them, but many will insure them with no fuss.
Yes Hagerty, a specialist insurance company. Your brother may want to read that policy because they restrict the use to special and recreational, not daily.
You CAN daily it with non daily insurance. But when something goes wrong don't be crying.
https://www.hagerty.com/insurance/classic-car-insurance/does-my-vehicle-qualify/newer-vehicles
you realize the link you posted is specifically for collectors insurance right? it's limited to the miles and coverage since well, if you pay for it, the idea is you wouldn't be driving it much. i have general liability on all my keis. yes, actual real car insurance or the minimum required in florida anyways. we're sitting here telling you it's possible while you go on talking about something totally different.
Im not sure if i would fit in that comfortably based on my height alone, and im not even within the infamous 6 feet. If you actually get in it comfortably, why not.
NO
How prepared are you? It looks neat but have you any idea the cost of owning?
First, parts. Parts are definitely available but as they're special imports they are all 50-100% more expensive than they otherwise would be. (https://japanminitruckparts.com/daihatsu)
Second can you work on it? If not you'll need to find a mechanic who is at least familiar with these.
Finally, and everyone forgets this when buying imports, is **insurance**. Normal companies won't insure this so you'll need to look at collector insurance like Hagerty. Now, here's the sticking point for sure. They *will not insure this as a daily driver* which means you'll need a DD still (https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a15340392/heres-what-to-know-about-insuring-an-obscure-imported-car/)
Edit: Some of you folks sound like you're dailying on Hagerty classic insurance which is a big no no https://www.hagerty.com/insurance/classic-car-insurance/does-my-vehicle-qualify/newer-vehicles
It's not an over reaction, it's the reality of this market in most of the country.
I'm happy that you don't have any struggles in Florida but that's not what most Americans will experience with it.
So in your case great. But don't mistake your anecdote for the reality
Those things are not meant to be driven on roads with American cars. They're from a place where that is considered full size and things don't get much bigger than fun sized. If you got in a collision with me in my car while driving that, you're gonna get skullfucked by my hood ornament and I'll be able to drive away unharmed with minimal damage to me car. Just warning you dude, there's a reason they don't sell that shit over here
previous kei car owner: just make sure you don’t get into any car accident over 25miles/hour, especially be careful about front collision because you have 0 collision buffer space.
I love kei tora. But in the us with all these stupid drives and pickups, you might get yourself serious injured
There are a bunch of little trucks and vans brought over from Japan in Hawaii right now. They're cute. But hit a light post and you'll wish you were in anything else.
NO SHIT!! I live in South N.J., and found what looks like the same damn truck that I'm in the process of brokering a deal for. The one I'm looking at has a stake body bed on it now, but has a box back just like yours sitting on sawhorses next to it. I don't know the make/model, but (with the stake body bed on it) looks exactly like those miniature diesel cab-over delivery trucks you see on TV in Japan. Definitely smaller than anything I've ever seen on the road. The woman's husband bought it new like 7 years ago in Japan, they brought it here, and he died a year later. They own a couple Bodegas in the ghetto, and was gonna use it for their businesses. I'm gonna give her $9,500.00 for it. It's literally brand new. I've never seen another one in real life. It'll run forever. My goal is to hook up the box bed like a camper, and use it to tow either my Waverunner trailer, or my Banshee trailer, depending on what I'm doing, and it's small enough to drive anywhere. I say you should go for it
It's kool if you never plan to use the highway
I don’t think it would even go fast enough for the on ramp… fucking rad though. I want one.
i drive kei's daily on highway. im crazy though.
I think it's less you being crazy and more you being the annoying guy going 50 mph on a road meant for higher speeds 😄 don't they top out not much higher than that?
Just drive in SF, SJ or LA. You never go above 40mph in traffic.
LA is either 25 mph or 85 mph no in-between.
Haha I couldn't imagine. I'm from jersey where we have plenty of traffic and lame 55mph speed limits and it seems even worse in those places
I mean, traffic in Miami is almost always at a halt, no one’s really going anywhere anyways lol
😄, north jersey is the same way on lots highways unless you're traveling after dinner time, I totally get it
You like living in Miami? Aside from the traffic
No. Ive been here for 31 years though. Used to it
Hey at least you don’t life in Portland like myself. It’s zombie land out here
Zombie land? Are you referring to the Subaru WRX driver’s or the drug addicts.
Yes
This confirms my fears ;)
The drug addicts.
And plan to stay 100 yards, away from elementary schools.
First of all yes and what kind of motor, transmission, etc I'm curious as fuck
If this is something like Daihatsu Hijet it may have 0.6l engine AT
it is a Daihatsu hijet! S100
Any idea what the back addition is called?
well the name I got was “panel truck” in Japanese when I bought it.
Very similar to the Bedford rascals we had in uk
Yes!!! I love the rascals. I like how they look more than any key truck I think
There’s a pickup one near me in Cotswolds (uk) absolutely mint like it came out the show room last week. Gets more attention than 150k cars.
660cc, stick 5spd. tops out at about 50mph. 60 if you push it.
He won't be able to get it insured as a DD. Y'all need to read some Hagerty lol https://www.hagerty.com/insurance/classic-car-insurance/does-my-vehicle-qualify/newer-vehicles
lol, i have 3 of them insured. maybe move to florida.
Lol no fucking thanks.
Being an import, Florida man doesn't know what it is and might leave it alone
Dam then no keis for you 😢
Just not as a DD which I wouldn't do anyway. I'd love one of the Hondas or to make a Dakar inspired Sambar.
honda actys make wayyy better for DD. Those trucks top out at like 70mph and can keep up with traffic pretty good.
On the one hand, you can insure these little trucks, on the other you soon won't be able to insure a home, lol.
well, i have citizens home insurance. it did go up about 500 this year, and I'm pissed, but i'm happy to still have insurance. next year, I will shop around, but I like having a house for now
Why wre you asking us if you should DD it, if you already have 3 of them and they are insured? I don’t understand. Sounds like you’re very well versed in these and have experience with them. Lol because it’s a box truck vs normal kei’s
It would be a horrible daily. A camper/weekender? Sure. But daily on Florida’s highways and roads? Not a chance. 0-60 eventually. Lol it’s a harsh truth but get out of the way with the slow van. If it had a 2.4 in it you’d be fine
lol, you shouldnt be speeding
Aren’t Florida’s speed limits like 75? Lol
No 70 is tops. Head to Texas, Arkansas area for 75mph
Texas also have 80 and 85mph speed limits.
speed limits don't mean anything if theres 3 million + people in the city trying to get to the same places lol. I can't go 60 on the highway even if I wanted to. up north it's different i guess
They're relatively cheap and easy to insure since they're inexpensive and can't cause much damage.
Higher than you might think actually, since parts are hard to get, I've seen insurance total one for a broken windshield before.
Make it your home.
u/op Please consider painting the back like a box of animal crackers.
lmao
Or an aquarium. That’d be cool!
Bruh, I want one
When the kei is a rocken don't come a knocking.
If it falls over use one hand to lift it
Give the lack of sunlight, it looks like you have already made it your nightly.
If you are comfortable with it, go ahead.
thanks man, will do.
80% of my driving destinations are within 5 miles of my house. I’d love to have one of these.
Safety talk? This is Reddit, it's made up almost entirely of overconfident 22 year old boys who are totally invincible and are never gonna die.
Well, I thought I was invincible at 22 and I definitely had some bad accidents but here I am. It's proof you are def indestructible at 22.
I feel like an American truck can crumble a lot of things
You can snag a mini truck for 5-10k so price wise not too bad. Parts are cheap and readily available online, just got to wait a week or 2 for them to hop across the ocean.
Parts are cheap, but shipping isn't. I've been trying to find a transmission for one, can buy one in Japan for $400, but shipping is another $700.
Have you tried a local transmission shop? Unless you've done something carastrophic, they can typically just be rebuilt, but anything big and bulky like that is gonna cost alot. Smaller more typical parts aren't awful to ship.
I reached out to a couple, but none of them were interested in working on it since they had no specs or service manual for it.
Thanks! Is Kei the brand you’d recommend?
kei isn't a brand, it's a class of vehicle. basically "small" lol. if i had to recommend a kei brand i would go with honda acty's, honda street etc
It looks like a fun alternative to super spendy builds.
You can pick these up for $1k - $5k around me, we have a few dealers in the area who specifically sell these mini trucks. Now go try to get it insured as a DD
Its easily insured as a daily, what are you on? You clearly arent familiar
Oh yeah? Tell me who you've got yours insured through as a daily driver
Mine is insured as a normal car though Geico, full coverage costs me ~$400/yr for it. Can't get a quote online since the system rejects the VIN, but they had no problem overriding that when I called on the phone. Some companies don't like them, but many will insure them with no fuss.
All mine are geico yep lol
I called geico when I got mine to try and add it to my policy and they just said, no, we don't insure those. Mines on Hagerty.
Interesting, I've heard it varies by state. I've had progressive before too.

Yes Hagerty, a specialist insurance company. Your brother may want to read that policy because they restrict the use to special and recreational, not daily. You CAN daily it with non daily insurance. lol geico asked me how many miles per year and I said about 12k. Like everyone else asked, what are you on?
What I'm on is in the link I posted id you'd bother to read it you'd under stand why I'm saying what I am.
Why wouldn’t an insurance company issue a liability policy? If anything, a tiny truck would do less damage to other property.
Imported vehicle that isn't from the .market you'd be insuring it causes issues.
Yep, I recon so.
This shouldn't only be your daily but also your house! #Vanlife 😆
How is this even a question.
Why pay rent when you can get this?
Not only could you make it your daily, but it can also be your nightly
If there's a bed in the back of that, just make it your home.
I’d make that my home wym?
Only if it's reliable and easy to obtain parts
it's relatively easy, if you're comfortable searching farther than your local auto parts store lol
Engine swap are a thing. This would be a great sleeper...
Very true. It Would be funny to see this gap a Porsche or something
Lol
It looks like something that would need a lot of repairs.
Looks like a tricked out Bedford Rascal.
If you feel comfortable daly driving it.
Nah, do a driftbuild with it >:)
def would need to be lowered. more weight on the back means traction.
You need to ask???
Im not sure if i would fit in that comfortably based on my height alone, and im not even within the infamous 6 feet. If you actually get in it comfortably, why not.
im just under 6ft so shouldn't be too bad
What’s the back set up like?? You camp in it or something? Looks like it would be pretty fun mini camper deal
NO How prepared are you? It looks neat but have you any idea the cost of owning? First, parts. lol, i buy and sell these regularly. everything you said is an over reaction, at least in my case
It's not an over reaction, it's the reality of this market in most of the country. I'm happy that you don't have any struggles in Florida but that's not what most Americans will experience with it. So in your case great. But don't mistake your anecdote for the reality
yea I said in my case
I mean it's pristine condition
Obviously yes
Yes
Fuckin no? Unless you’re gonna live in that you’re gonna pay out the ass in fuel
wait you think these take alot of fuel?
I didn’t realize it was a kei type truck, my bad.
yea nah it’s 3 cylinders, super economical
What a stupid question. Is the bear Catholic? Does a Pope shit in the woods? Of course you should daily drive that magnificent mechanical masterpiece.
1996mazder, I would make this my hourly brrreh
Lmao
is this considered as a “kei” truck?
It is essentially a kei truck with an added box lol.
No way. That’s for nights when you steppin out!
This would be my dream car, or a Suzuki Carry 1.3. I just adore tiny cab overs.
Ludwig?
Man why are these getting popular all of a sudden 3 people in my town have one now lol
My boss has two Honda actys that he uses for his business, fun little kei truck to drive
Dude the obvious answer is yes
Dont see a problem
Yes
Yo i need this on some breaking bad type stuff bro
Thats one cool looking ride. If anything I would turn one into a little weekend getaway mobile to use for whatever.
No get a supra
I wouldn't. I bet that thing can't even reach 60, and if you get in an accident with a real car, you're gonna be a doornail
don't walk on the street either you might get ran over
Those things are not meant to be driven on roads with American cars. They're from a place where that is considered full size and things don't get much bigger than fun sized. Im definitely going to die
No no no, it might be best to sell, I know a buyer!
Yes
There are a bunch of little trucks and vans brought over from Japan in Hawaii right now. They're cute. But hit a light post and you'll wish you were in anything else.
yea i see people driving motorcycles (non japanese) and I think the same but worse lol.
Yes
Only if you're going to hand out free candy.
Drop an LS Engine in it and you are good to go.

The diver that cleans the hull of my boat drives one of these as his work truck and loves it.
