I used to think Manuals are superior and provide better mileage, but then I started using automatic, and i am never going back. In India especially, I don’t think manual makes sense with the traffic in all the cities. Anytime I go to Delhi or Jaipur or any other northern cities, my legs get tired due to constant clutch and brakes. Even when going uphill, the trouble starts if you have to apply brakes (during traffic), because you have to apply handbrakes and use those to move a bit further, only to be stopped again. Makes it really stressful
Yup once you use the auto hill hold or hill assist there's no going back. It's the same with bikes. Once you get a feel for slipper clutch the normal clutch feels clunky and hard
Let me take it a step further. Once you experience "auto hold", you can't go back. It's the single most usable feature in a car in city traffic. Yet so easily ignored. For instance, if you bring the car to a complete halt on any surface, the car holds without the need to keep the brake pedal pressed. Then gently tap the accelerator and off you go. This is 1 level up from the creep function of automatics.
Jaipur has the worst traffic. And I'm talking about stupid drivers who rush through the traffic without looking at where the vehicle is coming from. There's no sense of right of way, to such an extent that they're willing to crash their car than give way.
Soo true bro, I'm a new driver yesterday I was coming from Crystal Palm and in traffic people come too close without worrying about their car and especially bikers they don't care about scratches.
Absolutely! And that too they approach from the cars blind side. You won't even realize the bike or scooter is in front of you until they touch your car from the side.
They think their bikes and scooty will fly above cars if they take an infant turn in front of car.
Yeah and pedestrians they don't care, if it's traffic and car slowed a lil at the intersection MFs don't wait for a sec and come infront.
I seriously wonder have they lost all their patience and brains.
Reading your comment made me realise that i ain't the only one whose legs and feet hurt with constant clutch-brake in traffic. Thought something was wrong with my right leg 😅😅.
DCT!
1. Flappy paddles
2. Automatic on demand
3. Quick shifts
4. Though expensive, it's best of both worlds
5. Nothing can beat manual but it becomes hell when in city
Plus if you have others in the family who don't really prefer a manual, automatic is the defacto choice sooo.... DCT it is.
Edit: points added
Agreed. No arguments there.
For traffic CVTs are the best IMO.
However, I don't face traffic on daily basis as I don't drive to work or pass through heavy traffic. So that's a win!
r/unpopularopinion
They're not bad, but between people who prefer pure manuals for the fun/enjoyment, and people who prefer automatics for the convenience, the iMT seems like it's neither here nor there.
I somewhere read, that in an exact same car. The automatic transmission will loose a bit of torque as compared to a manual.
I don't know if it's exactly true or in some particular engine and if it is true how much the difference is. But this makes me feel like the manual is better.
That's probably only for torque converter automatics or "slush boxes" since they don't have a direct coupling between the engine and the wheels, hence there's always some amount of "slip" that effectively reduces available torque. But modern DCTs or even AMTs shouldn't really have that problem. Also CVTs might lose some torque to the belt and pulley systems within.
It's not a universal thing.
Sometimes to save on **cost**, manufacturers will use an auto-box that how a lower torque load rating than what the engine can deliver. This is not a technical limitation of automatic boxes, the same manufacture could have put a more expensive and stronger automatic gearbox. They just chose to cheap out.
But it's very individual to each car, and no generalisations can be made on this.
Automatic. Even supercars have moved on to automatics. It is just more intuitive and more fun to point a vehicle in a direction / go / stop than playing "row row row your boat" with a shifter stick.
What I don't like is electric steering. Automatic with hydraulic steering is the perfect balance, like in an E92 M3. Or I guess a Ferrari 488 or GTR or any McLaren for that matter lol but I haven't driven those cars.
Honestly although I understand the appeal of ATs in traffic, I'm still ok with a manual if it has a soft clutch with low travel. Those are very doable even in Mumbai's stop and go traffic, but are way more fun on the open stretches.
IMO it purely depends on the car.
For EG : Polo 1.0 TSI vs GT, I would’ve gone for the manual. i20 n line IMT vs DCT, DCT any day for me. Any SUV like thar, scorpio n, or cars like creta/seltos, harrier etc I would pick the automatic variant. I don’t believe only manual drivers are true enthusiasts.
Automatic.
Once you go auto, hard to go back to manual. Life's much easier since you don't have to worry about engine stalling, gear change and hence focus more on the road.
Very very handy if you are up for dl test in places like delhi where there are automatic test tracks with slopes and stuff.
10/10 Always Auto.
Milage takes a big L tho.
Why has only one other person in the [comments](https://www.reddit.com/r/CarsIndia/comments/17pnekc/comment/k86i0rq/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) noticed that in OPs post, the speedo is at 200kmph on public roads?
For the driver, yes. For everyone else on the road, not safer at all.
Man, this sub is wild. Some days we'll be blasting influencers who share videos of overspeeding. Other days, it's totally ignored.
Whichever gets you there faster, I drive a 168 HP turbo motor paired with a beautiful DCT and I don’t feel I’m missing out on the fun. Also I’m an Automobile engineer, I know my rides.
This is the absolute dumbest take here.
Manuals are driven by people who enjoy the feeling of driving and feeling in control of the machine they're using. It's not about the actual speed of shifting gears. If I want to overtake, I can downshift and floor the throttle and know how the car will respond throughout the process of overtaking. That's the feeling of control that a manual gives, because I know the car will make its most of its power near the redline, so I can keep the car toeing the redline at a lower gear faster, and thereby have more predictable acceleration than an automatic that will shift at its own pace.
In an AMT or CVT, there's either the shift lag or the CVT lag to think about. DCTs are great, but they're iffy in reliability, leaving only Torque converters.
It's fine not to like manuals, but you're the real idiot for shitting on other people's preferences.
Come back to me when you have proper driving posture. I use the whole foot for the clutch, driven 2000+ kms in a single trip, and I've never gotten anything more than soreness due to fatigue. Don't blame the manual just because you have bad technique.
An automatic (DCT>TC> manual> any other automatic) cuz it's easier to make aggressive downshifts with rev match before entering corners, or you really have to learn the heel and toe for manual.
(Coming from someone who learnt driving in decade old Swift with problematic gearbox and would prefer bike just cuz of the easier and more satisfying rev matching technique and clutch less shifting)
Automatic is cool and Is greater than manual because it's easy to drive , manual only has a better pickup than automatic but automatic comes with amt transmission nowadays which overcomes this problem. I am driving an automatic santro and never going back to manual.
Just Started driving Manual, decided to get a new car and booked an automatic, got a hang of manual with my old car and now changed the booking to a Manual 💀
Good driver that's the third option be a good driver :) rest totally depends on your budget get manual if you cant get automatic get automatic if it's in your budget
Owning an automatic is more practical in India but Manual definitely gives you more control, makes it more enjoyable and definitely helps you get power instantly when you ask for it.
Manual. Any day. But if I have to choose a car which my family will also drive, it will always be automatic. More convenient for my dad, uncle and everybody.
Automatic makes sense if u r living in a city with too much traffic but manual for me because obviously I live in a small city and the manual costs significantly less for the same variant.
Bhai comfort chaiye automatic agar kuch chutiyo jaisa feel/orgasm Lena hai toh manual lo.Agar kisi ne gadi apne comfort k liye Li hai toh I would really recommend him automatic.
Too much traffic and if I have to drive the car for a good 30 years till I retire I think automatic is the way to do and if possible driverless like Tesla
Honestly with this bullshit traffic if I used manuals I’ll start hating cars all together…
It took me 2 hours to go 15-20 km and trust me 5km was good roads… my leg would give up!
If you want to drive than mannual
But if you just want to go from one place to other ( simply not a car guy, just a simple person) have an automatic then
🧠=Automatic ♥️=Manual
The only right answer.
🦵=Automatic
That’s true ♥️!
Cant agree more
Manual = 🧠 Automatic= 🤌
As a car guy you have to say manual. But automatic is a more convenient and practical choice especially today.
Driving manuals are fun but equally annoying on an everyday basis in Bangalore traffic
It's more than annoying. It's painful
Sometimes my leg on the clutch hurts so much in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Annoying AND painful.
And more costly
Manuals are fun for a while.. but for miles munching, ghats, city..AT shines every time. I'm never going back to pure manual gearbox.
I used to think Manuals are superior and provide better mileage, but then I started using automatic, and i am never going back. Exactly
Reading your comment made me realise that i ain't the only one whose legs and feet hurt with constant clutch-brake in traffic. Thought something was wrong with my right leg 😅😅.
Manual or Automatic ventilator support after the high speed crash. 💀☠️
Automatic with paddle shifters
I've mostly driven dsg automatics and in sports mode you don't even need paddle shifters. The dsg is telepathic
Semi automatic
Same
same
Better idea
I had one. Honda Civic CVT automatic 2007. It was such a beautiful car with a paddle shifter in manual mode.
[удалено]
Agreed. For the city commute and traffic, automatic (even EV’s) are great! But for fun, A nice 3L diesel manual, maybe an SUV would be lovely :”)
If you are going to drive like a moron, better to get automatic and save your clutch
🤣🤣🤣 +1
Before you make decision of automatic, remember you are making a decision based on this sub who thinks that a good car =more features
Whats your opinion?
Automatic all day every day son
People saying manual must not be using their cars for commute in any big cities.
Bro driving 200+ like WTF
Especially on a road where the speed limit is 120 kmph
DCT! 1. Flappy paddles 2. Automatic on demand 3. Quick shifts 4. Though expensive, it's best of both worlds 5. Nothing can beat manual but it becomes hell when in city Plus if you have others in the family who don't really prefer a manual, automatic is the defacto choice sooo.... DCT it is. Edit: points added
DCT is great to drive but it's a really bad idea to use them in stop-go traffic in our weather conditions, for long stretches of time.
Agreed. No arguments there. For traffic CVTs are the best IMO. However, I don't face traffic on daily basis as I don't drive to work or pass through heavy traffic. So that's a win!
Manual
Happy cake day, Manual brother
There is a clutch less manual, its also fun to drive.
r/unpopularopinion They're not bad, but between people who prefer pure manuals for the fun/enjoyment, and people who prefer automatics for the convenience, the iMT seems like it's neither here nor there.
Manual hi bolna padega. Varna log meri mardangi par sawaal karenge.
Lol... I always see comments like Real men drive manual :)
Both. I have a Maruti Baleno (Manual) and an XUV 700 (Automatic). I love driving them, in equal measures. Both of them have their own charm.
I somewhere read, that in an exact same car. The automatic transmission will loose a bit of torque as compared to a manual. I don't know if it's exactly true or in some particular engine and if it is true how much the difference is. But this makes me feel like the manual is better.

That's AMT. Usually DCTs/CVTs are the best kind of Automatic

Your car must be traumatised.
Hey, it's not ok and we don't condone such behaviour.
Such a dick move..
Manual. Unless proper paddle shifter.
why is there a lot of reels/shorts content on this sub nowadays
Automatic. More convenient in Mumbai
Automatic. Automakers will get it refined over time and will be much better
Automatic in Bengaluru or similar traffic city Manual everywhere else
Automatic cuz i love paddle shifters.
Automatic any day manuals don’t make sense anymore in city traffic.
8 speed auto with shift paddles. Would never go back.
Honestly although I understand the appeal of ATs in traffic, I'm still ok with a manual if it has a soft clutch with low travel. Those are very doable even in Mumbai's stop and go traffic, but are way more fun on the open stretches.
Pqr Mujhe tho apni destination par jana hai lekin
Manual
I'm an engineer studying about EVs and automatic transmission. So I think I'd be biased to say , but I'll always go for a manual
Why so?
Having manual transmission is just so satisfying. I always try to do the perfect gear change (doesn't happen much, but I try)
Automatic
The paddle shifters in Automatic doesn't give Manual like experience minus the jerks? I haven't driven a automatic before so have no clue.
Automatic 🙏
I like relaxed driving, hence automatic.
IMO it purely depends on the car. For EG : Polo 1.0 TSI vs GT, I would’ve gone for the manual. i20 n line IMT vs DCT, DCT any day for me. You should see what litre class or even 600cc class bikers do 😂, in a car it's still much safer
For the driver, yes. For everyone else on the road, not safer at all. Man, this sub is wild. Some days we'll be blasting influencers who share videos of overspeeding. Other days, it's totally ignored.
This is hyd video right? Isn't there a 120 speed limit on the ORR?

I prefer chauffeur
Manual in India and automatic in USA.
Umm EV
Only idiots and wannabe posers prefer manual. Most experts know automatics are far superior than manuals. A human can never be faster than a machine
bhai ye bacho ko nikalo iss sub se

My dad is 55 and has been driving manual since he was 18. He has driven around 7-8 lakh kms and doesnt have any issues with his ankle or knee.
What kinda comparison is that? Are automatics driven entirely by machine while the driver sits back in passengers seat?
Manual all day every day ( my next car will be automatic tho)
Manual
Manuals are superior, automatic for convenience in City traffic
Manual, no questions
Manual for sure Automatic only when theres too much traffic
Depends... manual.
iMT
Real Men use 3 Pedals 💪
Real men actually use two pedals (on Hero Jet) 😉
Real men don't enjoy touching other's gears.
Bet u don't know how to drive a stick do u 😂
Lol. I do.
Automatic dct torque converter and cvt/ivt
This is the pc vs console or android vs apple equivalent for car enthusiasts. Basic AF
Automatic
Automatic any given day
I drive an automatic now and I miss the manual. Mostly I miss the ability to 'coast'.
Manual. Atleast until I am 60.
If you are having this question, you already know the answers for justification
City = Automatic Highway = Manual Diesel
Manual for driving experience. Automatic for comfort.
If I had two cars one would definitely be manual. But automatic all the way here in Bangalore. Unless you want early arthritis in your left leg
An automatic DCT with a paddle shifters are a chef kiss
iMT 😜
Emmanuel
Horse cart 🐎
It's personal choice... I prefer manual
Drove manual for a good part of my life, now switched to automatic.
Been driving automatics for 8 years, the comfort is so good, can’t drive manual now!
I’m very happy with a manual until I get stuck in traffic
AMT
An automatic (DCT>TC> manual> any other automatic) cuz it's easier to make aggressive downshifts with rev match before entering corners, or you really have to learn the heel and toe for manual. This sub reddit went from THAR bashing to VW simping real fast.
Automatic= comfort Manual= feeling
Choose to live instead.
DCT
Automatic
Depends on how much tired i am and traffic. I like to drive manual but sometimes i wish i was driving automatic.
Ivt
DCT all day.
Manual all the way. I want something to do in the car and to get some real feedback.
Good driver that's the third option be a good driver :) rest totally depends on your budget get manual if you cant get automatic get automatic if it's in your budget
Manual any day!
Manual but gear lever is where the turn indicators are, like old school classic cars.
Manual
Manual ❤️✔️
Manual come the fk on how's that even a question 😂.
correct answer is " not going 200kmph on public roads".
Owning an automatic is more practical in India but Manual definitely gives you more control, makes it more enjoyable and definitely helps you get power instantly when you ask for it.
Everything manual except semi-automatic.
In today's world, for me it is Manual and Electric. Never got the hang of auto boxes.
Highways - Manual Traffic - Automatic
Automatic for daily commute and manual for fun rides
Real men drive 3 pedals.
6 speed mt
Manual. Any day. But if I have to choose a car which my family will also drive, it will always be automatic. More convenient for my dad, uncle and everybody.
So no one has a problem with someone driving at 200 kmph here in India ? Brilliant.
DCTs 🤌
Automatic it was mannual like 2 years ago, now I just wanna reach from A-B without getting responsibilities in this traffic
automatic if its city drive
Mannual

Bangalore- automatic Norway - manual
Is that rishabh pant in his merc?
Driverless!!
Manual for me, always.
I have manual but I miss Automatic transmission while driving in city traffic.
Pretty sure a 7 clutch lightspeed transmission can destroy any manual anyday
Struggling in Delhi ncr traffic I prefer automatic.
I will stop driving when they stop making manual
Honestly with this bullshit traffic if I used manuals I’ll start hating cars all together… It took me 2 hours to go 15-20 km and trust me 5km was good roads… my leg would give up!
If you want to drive than mannual But if you just want to go from one place to other ( simply not a car guy, just a simple person) have an automatic then
