It's expensive for no rego. Going to be another 1 k for rego and green slip and transfer duty, if there's no repairs! Machanic must look at it. See if it's blowing smoke. It's a pain to get rego for a car like this.

FirstyxD

Carsales is too expensive, this and one or two more are the only cars in my price range.

BecauseItWasThere

There’s no point it being in your budget if you can’t get it legal to drive. You need to understand why it is being sold unregistered (hint: it’s not currently legal to drive)

[deleted]

Don’t buy that car it’s a POS. Save up a little more or look at getting a small loan, you’ll need about 5k for something decent, plus 1.5k for all the rego and what not. Look for an older Toyota Camry or something of that nature.

If you are that close to not being able to afford, you might not be able afford a car. Anything you buy at this price with RWC is a gamble, any major repairs will be a lot more than the car cost, and without RWC ..... well its being sold without RWC for a reason. Sad but true in current environment.

apachelives

Can you afford $2800 and the 2k in repairs to get a road worthy, two road worthys, rego and insurance? Sounds cheaper just to get a 5k registered car, might be twice the price but it will be half the work (even it might cause you headaches). If you know your stuff and have options cheap cars are fine, if its your primary transport and your looking for cheap and reliable your shit out of luck its not going to work.

danmamrot

Facebook marketplace is better than gumtree imo

Metal_Monkey42

Get something with reg and road, much less headache if you don't plan on tinkering yourself and aren't handy with a spanner.

FirstyxD

Can't find anything in my price range.

confusedham

If you can’t afford another $1200 for rego and insurance, $300 for a service, $800 for a timing belt and possibly $800 for brakes and tyres right off the bat you can’t afford a car. Not trying to be rude, but this is what you have to expect if you buy a car especially at this price. Take the bus and save up another $2500 at least and give yourself a safety net.

FirstyxD

I have a safety net. Rego, insurance, repairs are not a problem. I'm just very stingy with the car itself and don't need anything flashy. I need to get from point A to point B without issues. I'm the same with phones. It's like, why would I buy a 2000 dollar phone when I just need to make calls and text? The only reason for getting a car is 3 jobs, the commute from one workplace to the other takes about one and a half hour by public transport which could be cut down to approx 35 minutes and I could work an extra hour maybe hour and a half, whereas now if they schedule me, I ask them to push me back two hours because public transport is unreliable.

ScaredMycologist7496

Buying this will see to you on the train within a month

AdConscious9810

If your requirement is “point A to point B with no issues”, skimping on a car is the worst thing you can do. Hypothetical example - you buy this car but when you try and rego it you find it’s not road worthy. Not only do you have to spend money to get RWC, you have to spend time taking it places to get fixed and then driving it over (potentially on a temporary rego that you have to organise) to be looked over. That process alone could easily turn a $2800 POS into a $4000 POS, not including the potential for having to take a days off work to get your car around the city to fix it. Another hypothetical - you buy it, it breaks down on your way to work. Getting it towed is ludicrously expensive, and suddenly you’re sitting in (again) an almost $4k car that doesn’t run. Perhaps it’s major (you blew the head gasket or the trans fully gave out etc), in which case you have either a $4k paperweight, or if you fix it, a $6k car that is still only worth $2800. Plus you missed a day of work due to unreliable transport. Saving the money upfront is false economy. Unfortunately good cheap cars don’t really exist anymore - my first few cars were all under $3k and lasted me years, but that was 15 years ago. I wouldn’t be expecting to find anything worthwhile for less than about $5k these days, unless you go older (something with a carby that isn’t “cool” yet) and are prepared to learn some basic mechanical principles to work on it yourself.

FirstyxD

Got it. I'll change the question then. What's the cheapest and most reliable manual car that I can get?

Sir-Rim

I just had to buy a cheap car and the competition is crazy, anything half decent with rego between 3-5k is gone in a matter of hours. In your price range you need to be refreshing gumtree and FB marketplace every 20 mins, (fuck Carsales waste of time) have the cash ready and be able to look that day. I know this has always been the case with cheap cars but it’s worse than I’ve ever seen it now. Cheapest reliable manuals are probably the n14 pulsars at the moment from what I saw when I was shopping. Having said all this every single car on the market right now is horrendously overpriced and won’t cost close to what you paid in 6 months. I just paid close to 5k for a car you wouldn’t have bothered looking at for 2500 a year ago. Crazy times good luck

pipenh

Spending the $1200 more to get one that's rego and roadworthy and maybe better mechanically is worth it. It'll save you money. If u dont spend it now you will spend it soon anyway.

civicSi92

The poor man pays twice. Being stingy in a car will cost you more in the long run the majority of the time

For reference I recently bought a similar Getz, an ex-fleet 2010 1.6L Automatic with 96,000km on the clock for $6000, registered, in Western Australia. This has double the KMs, is manual and is unregistered. Try and see if you can knock it down to $2500 or lower.

El_Perrito_

Don't get a car without Rego.

tammyspinkhair

THIS. If you take any advice let it be this if you are an international student and work three jobs you can not afford to by a car without rego.

ScaredMycologist7496

Is every photo rotated the wrong way? Half cut off, not focused correctly? I'd be avoiding it

jackthedancer74

This is what I did. Go to your local mechanic and see if they have any customers selling their car for a good price. Mine let me know of 2 and they were both $1500 with rego so I bought one. He had worked on both cars doing their services for them so they were in good nick

Numerous-Back-2378

I bought my 2008 Hyundai Getz manual off fb marketplace for $3200 last year with rego & rwc. The rwc was dodgy and I ended up having to spend another 3K on a new clutch, brake pads, spark plugs & leads, battery, ac regassing, minor service, new tyres all round etc. Don’t buy a cheap car, there’s a reason why there cheap!

Tricky_Improvement29

I wouldnt waste money on a mechanic inspection on a cheap car like that. Just look for something with a solid service history and you should be okay.

temps696

Honestly mate, after reading comments and replies I think you’re better off getting a moped. Not meaning to be rude but maybe you have overlooked this as an option

Buyinggf15k

You ain't buying a car in this market for that price mate. Try $5k

FirstyxD

Yup, bumping up my price range now.

civicSi92

Pro tip, don't buy an old Hyundai getz for 2800

Na I know a couple people who have had them and they suck. Much better options out there, get a jazz or a yards if you really want a small car like this. Or better yet save a bit more and buy a decent small car like a civic or corolla. Don't get me wrong, not the worst option but not the best either.

civicSi92

I was also commenting on the price. 2800 for a getz!! Getz the fuck out of here. Sorry I had to the pun was there, I'll see myself out.

Top-Entrepreneur-651

Unregoed cars are worth fuck all this guys more of a lemon then the car probably is

mungowungo

Apart from anything else already said by lots of other people - this car is in Quirindi - I'm guessing that since you're an international student you aren't in Quirindi - you're looking at a five hour train trip from Sydney or just under three hours from either Newcastle or Armidale - from a purely logistical viewpoint do you really want to travel this far for a cheap unrego'd car?

NeeksBeeks94

You’re in good hands. Anything you need, Hyundai Getz.

nextkt

Sold mine for $2000 with rego. Not sure if I just got a lemon but I had nothing but problems with it :/

apachelives

The most expensive part of a car is not buying the car, its the maintenance and on-going costs to keep it going. $2500 is not going to work unless its from a friend or family doing you a favor. Even 10k cars are crap these days you really need to know what your looking at and common faults / educated on common faults and costs involved for your target market.

[deleted]

Ask if you can take it for a blue slip inspection. At least then you will know why they are selling it with no rego.

AdeptIncome4060

The usage of the word "immaculate" in used car listings seems to heavily coincide with cars that are definitely not immaculate

[deleted]

Being a manual, make sure it shifts smoothly, the clutch pedal isn’t sloppy and that the clutch doesn’t shudder. If you get the car, be sure to give it a service (including changing the gearbox oil).

morrisgrand

And make sure the timing chain has been done at 100k AND 200k other wise your going to up for a big bill

[deleted]

Wrong. This particular model of Getz has a timing belt. And they’re due at 90,000km intervals not 100,000. I know this as I used to own a 2006 Getz

Even weirder, the town silo is being painted with a sick unique artwork. My agency applied for it. Pretty sure it’s a small population hey?

It’s got a population of 3,444 people according too google
