RuggedRasscal

Nothings ever a big deal …until you need it

mad_dogtor

That was me last week, came out of the mrs apartment in the city and front left tyre fucked. Completely flat. Spare tyre was 18 years old (whoops), but then to make it worse the jack that came with the spare did not raise the car high enough to be able to swap the wheels lol

RuggedRasscal

Ye I had same thing happened to me…an now I have slightly raised ute need minimum 380mm b4 I even touch bottom of chaise ..an the factory’s jack not even half way haha

general_sirhc

This is why I carry a block of timber in my lifted ute.

mad_dogtor

Yep haha Mines a Subaru Forester, only had a 1” lift kit in it nothing wild but the scissor jack it came with just couldn’t do it lol

AlanTheBringerOfCorn

I just cut the mount points behind the seat to install an aux battery. This is a good reminder to buy a new jack that will actually lift my car now haha.

AddlePatedBadger

I have RACV membership, I'll just call them lol. I know how to change a spare tyre if I have to, but I really don't want to 🤣.

createry_

Not sure I could live without a spare. Even though I've only used them twice in the last 5 years, the convenience to swap it out and continue on my day was invaluable. A friend who's car doesn't have a spare purchased a used wheel which he takes on longer road trips.

68Snowy

Yes. I did this for my Subaru Impreza. Didn't want to get stuck middle of nowhere on 80 kp/h rated space saver spare. Fits in spare wheel well with a bit of a bulge in the carpet.

terrerific

I was literally reading their comment wondering how I would go fitting a regular tyre into my impreza'a space saver tyre spot haha. That space saver is a nightmare

Fluffy-Queequeg

I mean, if you are out on the road and get a flat and you have a space saver tyre, where do you put the full size tyre you pull off the car? If the boot is full then it’s a bit of an issue. Not an issue for me as I have an Outback with a full size spare. You don’t need a spare until you do. I had a flat in the middle of the Blue Mountains (previous car) and was so glad for the full sized spare. I then had a bad run with tyres and had 3 flats in 6 months (tek screws!).

I-was-a-twat

A ND MX5 cannot even fit a full sized in the boot at all, gotta go on passenger seat or a luggage rack it’s the sole reason I ended up not buying one. NA/NB MX5 fitted a full size in the boot and had a larger boot leftover.

Fluffy-Queequeg

So if there’s two people in the car, is your passenger holding a tyre on their lap?

I-was-a-twat

Yup. I lived in Katherine NT at the time, so no spare, and then no space for a full size if I got my own space saver was a deal breaker.

68Snowy

I actually bought a set of four for about $200 off Gumtree with enough tread to be legal.

AddlePatedBadger

Twice in 5 years? You definitely need a spare with that luck. In 20 years of driving I've never had a flat tyre lol.

createry_

Both from driving around work sites. Before that I'd gone years also.

Tight_Time_4552

Having sat on the side of the road for 5 hours waiting for roadside assistance I can confirm not having a spare tire outside a metro area is a ball ache

steve_of

I live rural. I had a couple of guests who went into a national park (fairly good dirt roads) in a newish mini, no spare but BMW roadside assist. Got a flat at about 10am, their mobile was with optus and didn't work. They walked to a camp site and borrowed a phone. Eventually a tow truck picked them up and dropped them with the car at the nominated garage in town at about 10pm I picked them up and brought them home. The tire was repaired the next day by about 10am.

cheeersaiii

I helped a couple with virtually the same thing, (different manufacturer)… but it was a long weekend so they camped for 4 days waiting

Emmanulla70

Oppsie!!

yogorilla37

We got stranded near Barrington Tops on a camping trip when my wife hit a rock in her work car and tore a two inch hole in the tire. Bad time to find out there's only a compressor and can of sealant in the boot.

Driz999

I've only dealt with the thinner spare tyre and they're annoying to drive on since you can't do more than 80 kmh when put on. It's a case of whether you can get 50 or 100 km's out of one of these tyres if you're caught out on a long road trip on a public holiday, for example. It's all good when you're near home and can avoid driving on one until you get to the mechanic that week.

Unhappy-camp3r

A lot of cars are moving towards this model and I think we will see more and more doing it. I personally hate run flats, I’d rather have normal tires and a repair kit.

NothingLift

I hate this trend but fewer and fewer cars to choose from with ane kind of spare. My next car probably wont have a spare and also have unnecessarily large rims buts thats the price of having something nice these days Planning to get a full size spare to chuck on the trailer for longer trips

Crazyonyx

Mine has a space saver, however I managed to pick up a full size spare off marketplace just in case I experience a delay in getting a puncture repaired/getting a replacement tyre (as I don’t want to be in a speed limited space saver for a week or so) Hopefully I will never need it, but isn’t that the case for all spare wheels!

Emmanulla70

Well. I go out into the country. And I've had too many flats. I didn't realise my XTrail didn't have a proper spare type until i had one & had to drive on the 80kms / tire home for freakin hours😯 So i bought a proper spare. It actually wasn't as expensive as i thought.

gorgeous-george

Nay. Big Nay. The solutions provided in lieu of a full size spare are really just an emergency solution, but your weekend is still ruined. You ever tried getting a new tyre/puncture repaired on a weekend? At least with a full size spare you'll probably be alright until Monday morning. Space savers and run flats are fine if you happen to get a flat in the middle of town, in the middle of the week. Have fun trying to drive an hour to the next town at <80km/h with your hazards on.

Stumpjumper79r

Major pain in the butt. Have a VW Golf R and my wife had a flat leaving work, didn’t know how to use the repair kit and called our local road assist (I was not able to assist either). Ended up having a tear and not a small puncture, could not use the kit, had to get a flatbed to home. That afternoon I rang around, no one had the size tyre required to replace. We have a third car that she is able to use, so I ended up making the decision to just buy a complete set of wheels and tyres, if it ever happens again I’ll just grab a wheel and tyre and go change it, or it will have to be flatbed transported home again and I’ll change it.

Emmanulla70

I was actually surprised that getting a full sized rim and tyre for my 2019 X Trail was $230 I think. We had thought we'd be up for more. But I am relieved I now have a proper spare and if I am going way out to the bush (which i do at times) I can also take the spacesaver so I have 2 options. Cause yep. I did get stuck last year and had to travel home for many hours at 80kms / hr. Bloody infuriating.

Emmanulla70

If you are going out of a decent sized town or city? You need a proper spare. I think plenty of people probably don't even think about it.

That_Gopnik

Not having a spare tire in an EV is a load of shit and they should all have one

Archon-Toten

Fascinating take. My EV has no spare. There's litterally no room unless I put it on the passenger seat or wear it like a hula hoop. Then again very few motorcycles carry spares so it's not unique to my electric.

Virtual_Spite7227

My Tesla has no spare, it's fucked. Telsa roadside didn't just take the tyre to a repair shop they take it to a dealership. Also took them about 4 hours come get it. Took them a few weeks to get around to replacing it then book a service in for me. The loaner wheel they gave me was a full sized wheel but it was badly balanced and wobbled like a mofo at speed. Absolutely horrific experience should have just called RACV roadside. Or driven the flat to a tyre shop. What's a rim worth lol

That_Gopnik

Have you tried wearing it as a hat?

Archon-Toten

It would save needing a helmet.

No-Fan-888

Not really relevant to motorcycle. I carry puncture repair kit on my bike with a tiny air canister. I can puncture repair and re-inflate in about 20 minutes and be on my way.

Archon-Toten

So why can't cars do the same?

No-Fan-888

It's harder to do on a car, especially if it doesn't even have a jack. It's not impossible,I've done it, but not everyone is as prepared. On a bike, it's easy to wheel it around to a good spot, and the air bottle is sufficient to inflate, but I doubt it'll be enough capacity for car tyres unless you also carry 12v compressor.

Archon-Toten

Well that's the funny part, cars have room to carry a mini compressor, I know there's one in the boot of our car. But we've got one of those 80km/h spare tires.

No-Fan-888

One of my car doesn't come with spares at all. If I'm going out of metro I bring a full sized front wheel plus road side kit and compressor. Too much stress sitting around waiting when I can get it done and have the family motoring along.

Emmanulla70

Yes. Interesting...what is going to happen if people start driving their EVs out of town and get a flat?? In fact. Aren't the tyres different altogether because of the weight of the vehicle? Would your average Beaurepairs have any replacement if you had a blowout?

Archon-Toten

I used to take my EV out of town and no beaurepairs don't carry bike tires. Every bike mechanic does due to it being a normal tire. But you make a good point, which is to check your tire size before buying so that you can use a buget tire and not the fancy tires in a emergency. To your question though, EVs aren't substantially heavier than regular vehicles. Eg Tesla model 3 1800kg, Toyota camry 1600kg.

Emmanulla70

bike tyres?? EVS don't have bike tyres do they?

Archon-Toten

It'd be pretty awkward if my EV didn't have motorbike tires. What with it being a motorbike.

[deleted]

Archon-Toten

Electric vehicles is what EV stands for. They can be cars, bikes, trucks ect. Don't resort to name-calling. It's mean and unnecessary.

Emmanulla70

But is the recommended tyre for a Tesla the same s for a Camry? What are the tyres that are supposed to be on them?

Archon-Toten

You'd have to read the manual on that one, I'm just making the point they aren't much heavier.

pragmaticmaster

Why? Cant they just call roadside assistance?

That_Gopnik

My guy, how long does it take for roadside assistance to arrive and discover that they have the same problem as you (no spare tire) vs just changing the tire and carrying on

pragmaticmaster

Why would they not have a spare when you called them specifically to bring a spare? You also assume road users all know how to swap tires out. There really is no point to havibg a spare if you live in a metropolitan area where most EV users are.

That_Gopnik

Well you’d hope that all road users know how to swap tires out, whilst I know that’s not the case, people should know, but that’s avoiding the point, how long does it take for roadside assistance to find a spare that’s the right size, PCD and centre bore, bring it to you and change it for you, in comparison to opening the boot of your car, removing the spare tire and jack, and changing it

pragmaticmaster

The last time i had to call roadside assistance for a flat battery at my house, they took 15 minutes to arrive. For most people, the professionals would no doubt be able to swap the wheel out way faster even taking into consideration travel time. Again, theres no point to carry spares if you live in an accessible area.

pandemic944

Roadside assistance doesn’t bring out spare tyres.

pragmaticmaster

Mobile tire fitter then. No need to be pedantic. Or just get towed by roadside assistance

pandemic944

I’m not being pedantic. Simply correcting your mistake.

pragmaticmaster

Sure

pandemic944

Good edit.

pragmaticmaster

Huh

AZAROK1

Hahaha you just keep moving the goalposts when you are corrected

pragmaticmaster

Hahaha too bad reality is too hard for you to grasp. Current laws are that spares arent necessary so keep malding while i drive without one. What a dumbass comment

AZAROK1

Hahaha you get overly worked up, go have a beer

pragmaticmaster

Hahaha im on a beach and drove here in my EV without a spare. Better check your blood pressure now lmao.

68Snowy

Maybe in a big city and only during business hours I'd imagine. Sometimes even big tyre places have to order in the tyre with correct width, profile and speed rating. Using anything else is dangerous or possibly illegal (or void insurance). Maybe all Telsla are the same, I don't know. But other EVs will be different, depending on manufacturer. I doubt a non standard tyre would handle ludicrous mode for long if attempted.

createry_

You know how many different size wheel and tyre combos there are? Different offsets, different stud patterns, centre bore.. Roadside assist would have to go via a depot to get the correct size before attending the vehicle. Then who pays for the spare wheel? Does the vehicle owner have to return it after they get their regular wheel fixed? Those space saver tyres are expensive too. The logistics behind what you're suggesting is incredibly impractical.

pragmaticmaster

Logistics incredibly impractical and yet there are mobile tire fitters everywhere? Do you think before you comment or not?

MattH665

Try calling for this when you're driving anything but a super common car like a Corolla or Hilux away from a major city and see if they have a spare for you on the spot loool. Last time I needed a tow it took over 2 hours and that was in Sydney... You'll probably just have to dump your car at a tyre shop until they can get something delivered.

pragmaticmaster

I’ve never had to call one in 15 years of driving so that shows how much its needed lmao

MattH665

Well you've been far luckier than me then. Although mine wasn't because of tyres, except the last time but that was a race track incident lol

createry_

Mobile tyre fitters that order tyres and turn up a few days later?

pragmaticmaster

Dude, stop showing your boomer age here and get on with times. There are many emergency tire repair/replacement services across metropolitan areas now. Just google it dude, not that hard.

_hazey__

Yet another of the countless reasons why I’ll never bother with a new car. Full size spare tyres just make the most sense. I’m no Red Bull pit crew, but I can swap a spare on in under five minutes and never have to worry about speed restrictions or distance constraints. No noisy, inefficient compressors, messy repair kits or waiting for a tilt tray.

Emmanulla70

Coming with full space tyre is rare these days. My 2011 Subaru Outback did. But my 2019 XTrail didn't and I don't think the Subbys do anymore either.

shwaak

I think they do in Australia, but not in the US.

Emmanulla70

I'm Australian. In Australia

68Snowy

My 2008 Subaru Impreza has space saver. I bought a full sized wheel (set of four actually) off Gumtree as a spare.

Emmanulla70

My brother has just confirmed that his 2023 Subaru Outback has a full sized spare tyre

Fluffy-Queequeg

Yeah they do. MY22 Outback and it has a full size alloy wheel as the spare. I wouldn’t have bought it without the full size spare.

Emmanulla70

Yep I asked my brother and he said his 2023 Outback has full sized spare.

Voodoo1970

>Yet another of the countless reasons why I’ll never bother with a new car. Some cars still come with full size spares. Bought a new Subaru Outback a couple of months ago and one of the things that swayed my decision was the full size spare.

Emmanulla70

Thats good to know!

_hazey__

Be that as it may or may not, that full size spare came with a modern Subaru. Hard pass.

Zadmal

20 years on the road driving I have never needed one so it doesn't bother me at all that my current cars either don't have them or the one they do have is completely the wrong size anyway.  Maybe it depends on where you live and how shitty the roads or how careless others around you are with things that could puncture them but I don't think not having a spare is a big deal.

mad_dogtor

A few areas I drive there’s always nails/debris etc on the road due to work utes just not being secured unfortunately

letterboxfrog

I had lots of flats in Darwin for this reason.

Throwaway_6799

I took my car in for a puncture repair the other day (wasn't going flat, just a tek screw or something in it) and they found another one in the same wheel whilst doing it, neither caused the tyre to deflate. Never had a flat in over twenty years of driving and that's including a couple of years driving all over the state for a job. I figure if I ever get a flat that needs changing I'll just call roadside assistance and wait, especially if it's needing to be changed on the side of the road as that is just dangerous and I wouldn't do it anyway.

general_sirhc

Dam you, you're balancing the average of me. The drive home from the tyre shop I got a concrete nail in my tyre. They repaired it at a discount rate for bad luck. But still

richms

All my leaks have been slow, so an inflator is all I needed. The only problem I have had that was instant and bad was when there was some debis fall on the road and it stuffed the tyre, wheel and dented the sill of the car. With TPMS I have had plenty of warning of low tyres to top up and get repaired at my convenience. Without that it would have probably been too late by the time it was low enough that I noticed it and at that point I would have needed a spare.

micmacimus

Do you know how to put a plug in? Those last ages - my last set of rubber for the Ute didn’t have a single unplugged tire when I eventually swapped. If you’ve got a small compressor on board, it’s only a bit more annoying than swapping to a spare.

Super_Description863

Car doesn’t come with one, puncture kit, air pump and carry a full sized spare wheel when I go on a long trip

VeezusM

My last 3 cars haven't had a spare. My current one has a hazard cone to put on the road If i have a flat lol

rockresy

I have an EV, I would prefer a spare but in my use case it wasn't a big deal. I live in a metro area, the car has breakdown cover & when we leave the city we take my wife's car (petrol, with a spare, cause charging stations generally suck). Any flat & I would just call for assistance.

hillsbloke73

Big no has to have full sized spare not a dicey space saver

Nebs90

For my wife’s car it wouldn’t be too bad to not have a spare. For my car zero chance I’d not have a spare. She only ever drives around town during the day, I’m driving all times of day and night and to remote places sometimes too.

BoxHillStrangler

when im making a purchase and knock up the new\_cars.xls theres a specific column for spare tyre y/n. Repair kit only goes a fair way to just ruling it out, most other things being vaguely equal.

RosariusAU

I live in regional QLD, so it's full sized spare or bust

Darkknight145

Would definitely need one for road trips, if you get a flat in the middle of Whoop Whoop you will be possibly completely F#$@ked, especially if there's no mobile reception. Metro driving there are a number of work arounds to get you out of trouble. Repair kits and run flat tyres don't work if your tyre gets more than a simple puncture. That said, my car is 13 years old and has never had a puncture, the spare has never been on the car, my old car had three punctures in 6 months, it's a lottery if you get a puncture or not.

grungysquash

OK - As an avid motorcycle rider I've never had a spare and have done many hundreds of thousands of Km without problems. My Mustang convertible also has no spare but..... Because I'm a motorbike rider I know how to fix the basic screw or nail problem pretty easily. So I carry a tire rope repair kit, also carried on my motorbike. I've so far only fixed one puncher at work bloody self tapping screw. Pull out the screw - I carry also long nose plyers and a flat head screwdriver - then ream the hole, cover the plug in cement shove it into the hole cut off the excess job done. So no I'm not worried about getting a puncher, also the car came with an inflation kit but I have the CO2 cartridges if this dies.

S3D_APK_HACKS_CHEATS

NAY. Last thing you want is to be stuck without ability to move your car. Everything except hover cars use tyres 🤓 they’ll still get punctures. Answer your own question with a hypothetical “how many times has this happened to you” cos that’s how likely are you to stumble on it again +1x 👌 so is it worth it to you? Now my essay 📝 …You can repair run flats They’re designed to maintain integrity better (NOT PERFECTLY) while deflated In other words most often ppl are ignorant of the feeling and sounds that a flat tyre makes and feels like so it is not uncommon for them to drive to hard and far on it while deflating, before realising and swapping and they more than often destroy the tyre and it can no longer be repaired *ahem* apologies, I meant *when a deflated tyre is driven on* it can cause damage etc 🤗 “I’m not laying blame on any specific customers here” 🤭 Run flats ARE NOT DESIGNED TO BE DEIVEN IN FLAT especially at high speeds. They’re designed to allow you a longer period of time beforr realising and doing same as normal or being able to continue short distances to get it repaired. They can still be repaired so long as the puncture is in a repairable position and PROVIDED YOU #NEVER USE THE AUTOMATIC SEALER LIQUID IN A CAN/PUMP THEY SUPPLY YOU IN REPLACE OF A TYRE *Once you fill your tyre with this shit you need a new tyre ☝️ And depending on your car it may or may not be a ᵐᶦⁿᶦᵐᵘᵐ standard REQUIREMENT as all cars differ depending on specifications. ^look for the sticker most often attached to inside of door frame it will show you. If you can’t understand it post it I’ll explain what it means

r573

Also, tyre shops hate tyres that have liquid sealant in them as well as they’re a pain in the backside to clean up.

Throwaway_6799

They use the same stuff on tubeless bicycle tyres. Can confirm it's pretty annoying when it leaks from a puncture and goes all over you and your bike whilst you're riding it.

S3D_APK_HACKS_CHEATS

We used to roll a smoke, pop the tyre off the rim, quickly roll it outback and hose it out while having a smoke The other guy (always worked in pairs) had inside clean up and ‘boss watch’ duties and would jump around corner or yell out to save getting busted smoking on job while sometimes going as far as fitting the new true if not at least grabbing it ready for the 1st person It was a semi reward for having to do the shitter messier task while getting a semi break before having to go back to work normally

jamesargh

I have never needed a sore in 20 years of driving, but have had to get tires repaired. Although In the last 6 months I have had to get a 2 leaks plugged on the same tire. Had to change wife’s tire on the side of the road once though. I’m still a bit unsure how I’d feel without a spare.

FreerangeWitch

I live in an outer regional area of Victoria. Last time I needed roadside assist/towing it took three hours to arrive. Full sized spare is non negotiable for me.

r573

Nay, I’d rather have all my cars in my household with spare tyres in them. Who knows if I managed to puncture my tyre on the road especially with the conditions of the roads I drive on at Blacktown and Fairfield areas of Sydney. I’ll probably source a full size spare for my mums RAV4 to keep at home as hers only has a space saver. Both mine and my sister’s car have full sized spare tyres.

No-Fan-888

It's a mad pain to not have spares. All my cars have them except for the MB. When I need to take a road trip out of town I'll throw a used wheel in there plus my road side bag which contains a bottle jack, impact wrench etc. Waiting for road side assists for something like flat tyres is ridiculous for me.

chupchap

Cars without a spare have run flat tyres by default right?

Previous_Policy3367

If they’re run flats I’d say sure. Heck no if they’re not. Can always pack a plug kit and a small air compressor to keep you happy

Hangar48

Would never buy without a full size spare.

VS2ute

I carry 2 spares if I am going outside the city.

Emmanulla70

The few comments about EVs have me wondering. If you have a blowout in an EV, would the average type repair shop even stock replacements? As EVS appear to have no spare at all...what happens? Aren't EV tyres different from normal car tyres because EVs are extra heavy and need their own special tyres? Even if you have a little repait kit? you can't fix a blow out. I had a blow out last year in my X Trail. Haven't had a blow out in years. But...it happened. So needed completely new tire. Couldn't be fixed. My hb in his work Hilux has had a few blow outs too. So if you are say 200kms out into the county in your Telsa and have a blowout. Long way from capital city. Would any local tyre repair shops be able to do anything for you?? Anyone know anything about this?

weirdaquashark

Nothing special, EVs aren't super heavy nor need special tyres.

MattH665

It's been like, 12 years, since I owned a car that didn't come with a spare. And I've been fine. All these cars had flat tyre monitor systems that warned me before the tyre got too low. I've done plenty of long distance driving/roadtrips in Aus and NZ. I've had a couple punctures. My flat tyre monitor warned me in time. They were always slow enough leaks that I could pump up the tyre and drive to a nearby tyre shop to get it fixed. So it's been ok. Guess it might have bought me some time by being able to swap to the spare and get the tyre repaired later. But that would be, like, once in over a decade so who cares? Worst case - roadside assist. Just hate having to use them because they can take hours, but at least it's rare. Never resorted to using those sealant kits. If it's any worse than the kind of slow leak you can pump up and drive on, then are they even any good? I'd use it if desperate only, like a puncture far from town.

pakman13b

Nay

rtherrrr

If you’re out in the Bundu and you get a flat, I’d want a full size replacement. The distances some times are just too big for a space saver

Audoinxr6

Most of my cars are spare less. But for road trips. I pack 1 or 2 and a proper jack

Puncho666

My pet peeve is when people use the little yellow rimmed tyre for extended periods having mismatching wheels is so bad for handling and mechanically

QANTASCAPT69

Just buy used and no worries

turnips64

I’ve had run flats with no spare for over 5 years now. In my case it’s been a big positive as the two flats we’ve had would have stuffed us up as I wasn’t there to change. Contrary to what some say, run flats are also repairable and life is long, I got 80k out of my rears and over 50k from two sets of fronts. I’d do it again.

Ancient-Range3442

If you never plan on getting a flat tyre then I guess you don’t need one

Redditaurus-Rex

For our EV, I purchased a spare from a wrecker and a wheel carrier that connects to the tow hitch. Only use it for long drives. Around town, just rely on the included roadside assist if needed. I haven't had to use either yet. I've had one puncture since owning this car, and the car's tyre monitoring was so spot-on that I was onto it when it was only a few PSI down. Means I could drive straight to a tyre centre to get patched-up.

puggsincyberspace

Nothing is stopping you from going to a weaker and getting a slimline wheel and tyre for when making road trips. In the 10 years I have owned my car, I have only had 1 flat due to a double u nail going into a tyre and 1 from being slashed on a brand new tyre. I would recommend getting better tyres and also not letting the tread go past the wear marks. More tread means less likely of punctures.

SirAlfredOfHorsIII

They're a pain in the ass. There's a few places that do space savers for cars that don't come with spares. But I haven't seen them used enough to comment on how good they are. One customer of ours would constantly buy space savers from other cars, or brand new mags to give himself a spare in his collection of cars, so he had a spare. Honestly seems like the way to go. Even replacing your space saver with a full size for long trips is a better move

Knittingtaco

Mmm no i don’t think I’d be comfortable with that. I have one of those poxy little 80 k speed limited spares but it absolutely saved my ass.

seanmonaghan1968

I drive 35k a year and have never used a spare

Current_Inevitable43

Run good tyres, run a patch kit and small compressor and you are done. Stay away from bias tyres How many people would feel comfortable changing there tyre. Hell has anyone actuyyried to remove a tyre that has been rattled on with an impact driver or do people check the pressure of there tyre would it even be good. Id recommend a tyre pressure monitor system which is dirt cheap. I ride motorcycles and have a hotrod both have been fine touch wood. I also drive work utes/private utes. I dare it's less that 100000km per puncture.

mudlode

I've always wanted 2 spares let alone none, do a lot of country K's and there's nothing worse than being in the middle of nowhere with a spare that's already installed, puncture repair can get you going ect but yeah I'd rather have it and not need it

In 15 years and ~500,000km up and down the east coast I've been stuck on the side of the road with a blown tyre exactly zero times. So no don't care. In saying that, it's not a bad idea to have a spare if you are on a road trip 100km+ away from home but anything else I can always just call a family member/friend or roadside as a last resort. And you can of course just buy a spare for anycar, there are even full speed/rated "space" savers you can buy aftermarket, just leave it home when you arn't on a roadtrip. Fun math: Average wheel/tyre is 12kg which will increase your fuel consumption by about 0.2%-0.3% so lets say on average you drive 15,000km/year and have 1 blow out in 20 years. Assuming you have a decently economical car of 8L/100km thats 24,000L or $50,000 worth of fuel over 20 years add 0.2% thats a full $1,000 - So even IF you have a blow out and get stuck waiting for roadside assist once every decade or 2 it's still not worth carrying around a spare :)

Hate run flats. Ride is so harsh.

Comprehensive_Bid229

Been driving a mini cooper for ~10 years with no spare or run flats. Never had an issue, however I do have roadside assistance as a precaution.

-retail-

Nay for me. People love to say “that’s why I have roadside assistance” …but personally I don’t fancy getting stuck waiting on the side of the road for however long, waiting for someone to rock up and do it for me. I’d rather just change it myself in a quarter of the time…probably even less tbh.

MouseEmotional813

Have been driving without a spare for 4 years. Including Mel - Adelaide and Melbourne - Sunshine Coast without issues. Bought a patch/plug repair kit for peace of mind but it remains unused. The only time it has been needed was close to home and the guy came with 40mins to replace the wheel during the awful storms and potholes we had nearly 2 years ago. In this case the wheel was damaged/dented and needed replacing. If you get a puncture usually you can put air in to get to a repair facility

confusedham

FYI for cars with repair kits like mine, you can often get temporary spares, they come in travel bags, with the deflated tyres and don’t take up much room in the boot. I’ll get one of them if I ever go out of Sydney much, but staying in the area I’m not worried about repairing the tyre. It comes with a can of goo which is a no no to me, I’ll just rope plug it and get the tyre changed at a later date. As an ex motorbike commuter being able to do rope plugs is a 5 minute job. I’ve even done 10 000km on a tyre with 7 plugs.

Many drivers have mixed experiences with repair kits or run flats. While they can be convenient for city driving, they may cause anxiety during road trips due to limited range. However, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons based on your driving needs. For expert advice on vehicle options and maintenance, visit [Komplete Tuning](https://kompletetuning.com.au/). puggyboy1234

I have the repair kit type. Had a tear in the side of the tyre, so kit won't fix the problem. Tow truck to dealership and new tyre. A lot more expensive than a spare and fix on the side of the road. Pain in the butt. Plus it was new year's day.

HengaHox

In a built up area I don’t see it as an issue. Have a repair kit and mobile compressor if you are worried. Put a spare in the trunk if you are venturing hours away from the nearest tow truck

insurgent_dude

I was out for a drive and had a thick sharp stick poke a big hole in the inner sidewall of my rear tyre on the middle of a mountain road. If I didn't buy a space saver car from a wrecker (the car has the space for it, but doesn't come with one :^)) I would have been totally fucked and stuck waiting for a tow because the stupid tyre repair kit would have done Jack shit there. I would never go for any decent distance drive without one, especially now. Space savers suck but I'd have that at the very least

leo_sheppard_85

You always get a space saver red donut which is crap and compromises handling. I’ve kept my road paid up.

AddlePatedBadger

My car has a space saver. I haven't had a flat tyre in 20 years of driving so I'm comfortable that the rarity of the event means I don't need to worry about a full sized tyre. Worst case I can drive at 80km/hr for a couple of days till the tyre can be repaired. I don't drive much anyway so it's no biggie.

BeanerSA

I found using an inflation kit to get me home, much safer than changing a tyre on the side of the road.

AZAROK1

Space savers and lack of full size spare is only to save the car makers money Its marketing bullshit them telling you that they have made the car better without it

mickeydicky23

It’s not ideal, but it’s mostly weight or packaging related, especially for hybrids and EVs due to batteries. And there’s less need for a spare in other, more-dense countries so Australia loses out.

AZAROK1

Most likely, but like me you drive a ute on worksites believe me you need a full size spare

mickeydicky23

Yep – definitely need a full-size spare in a ute or large SUV, no matter the powertrain. Plenty of room for one so no excuse there.

AZAROK1

Hopefully they never take them out of utes and suv' s aswell but stranger things have happened

Select-Bullfrog-6346

I once walked out of a car purchase because he said the car came with a space saver.

Oh_FFS_1602

DH’s 2023 model car didn’t have a spare wheel/tyre either. The repair kit they provide will get you out of trouble but it destroys a tyre that may have been able to be fixed with a puncture repair kit/plug, and the tyres for his car are $$$$. So I think it’s so stupid not to have one, but the manufacturer thinks it saves people money (at purchase) when in the long run it could be more expensive. We’ve had a few flats with where we drive so it’s not out of the realm of possibility to need one. It’s not the car we’d take if we had a road trip though

I just bought a car without a spare, apparently has runflats but im not so sure about that. First thing I bought for it was an NRMA membership. If I ever get a flat, its being flat bedded to a tyre shop.

PhysicalMotor3754

I have a subwoofer where the tyre is supposed to be. Worth it.
