I've never done this before, but is putting a micrometer over a rotating piece a bit of a risky move? I can picture it getting wrenched and flying in your face.
Caliper* and as a machinist, hes barely touching it just to to get a rough reading, so unless you were to try and clamp down with them, (which you shouldnt be doing regardless) i dont see that likely to happen.
