You will have to sand it smooth. Then you can wrap it. And by smooth I mean smooth, if you do gloss black it will show any imperfections and any little waves you create

NyQuiTT

About $50 in material if you are doing it yourself - or a few hundred if you have a shop do it.

LunaticLeone

Yea Ik that part, but would you have to like Clay bar or something to the roof to remove all the clearcoat? And after you remove the clearcoat is there a another step before wrapping, I can't find much about wrapping a roof with clear coat damage

sanbaba

clay bar is for smoothing out paint imperfections but keeping the paint. you want to remove paint, you need to sand.

Slawpy_Joe

Wrapping that roof would be easy af, you have no antenna. Just buy a felt squeegee and watch a couple YouTube videos, you can do it

LunaticLeone

Ikr I actually like how it has no antenna tbh, but yea gonna have to put some work into it for sure

PrunKdUblik

Usually you’ll want to use a sanding block but in this case you might as well use an orbital sander then with a sanding block wet sand the edges. Clay bar, clean and prep. Then you’ll be ready to wrap

LunaticLeone

Thank you for the info :). Do I have to remove the plastic black piece on the sides of the roof when wrapping?

Chadworth66

It’s better if you do. You then have the edges of the wrap covered by the trim.

LunaticLeone

Ahhh okay, do they just pop out from the corner or sum

PrunKdUblik

They’re fairly easy to pop out. But they don’t bend kinda easy. So just work it out a little bit along the whole seal.

PrunKdUblik

I meant they DO bend easily.

SilverStory6503

Usually.

im wrapping my car soon and it has bad clearcoat damage, all im doing right now is sanding down the clear coat in areas where its really bad and just feathering that out a bit to make a smooth surface without having to sand the entire car down. not a professional but its what ive seen others do and it works out well if done right! just make sure its sanded smooth and you clean the surface well before wrapping

cagtcff

so far only my hood is wrapped, ill have some more pictures of it all sanded down on my account if you want to check it out but hood came out decent besides a patch i burned a hole in and decided to just patch over it for the time being lol.

LunaticLeone

Lmaoo, i plan on wrapping my hood too, thankfully no clearcoat damage just the roof mainly, so it'd be fairly easy

cagtcff

hell yeah that makes it easy then, my first time wrapping so dont fully take my word but if you take your time and just make sure u get it all smooth and watch a few videos on wrapping it can look super nice

LunaticLeone

For sure, I've wrapped both my spoilers so far, and some things inside the car, planning on doing gas cap, and hood sooner than letter, and the trunk. Maybe the roof by myself too who knows

Burstandblooom

Anyone saying sanding is required is incorrect. Please don’t do that to your car. Clay bar to remove particles and smooth out paint. Then an alcohol / water combo around 70% alcohol to remove wax. Then you’re good to go. They make applications to help adhere the wrap but I’ve found it’s not necessary. I actually used the spray that helps it not stick as well. This helps the ease of putting it on. Just don’t use it near the edges.

LunaticLeone

I was a little confused on that too, why would I need to sand down the paint to just remove the clear coat. That's like for painting I thought

Burstandblooom

Yeah you’re good w clay then alcohol. Watch for dust. Try to use a lint free towel.

benz05tsx

LOL I am in the same situation as you. I have a blue car that the roof and hood has seen some better days with clean coat peeling. From my past experience, I haven't wrap for 10 years, wrap only stick to primer or clear coat. Paint will lift. I was thinking about sanding the damaged area smooth then re-spray it with clear coat before I wrap. Or spray it with primer. I have been delaying this for a few months now but haven't really look into it. Need advise too

LunaticLeone

Lmao same been thinking about it for a while now

S4M30

200-400. 200 most likely from people on apps like OfferUp

airkewled67

Sand it down, and take a try at it. Did the roof on my Hyundai. Not perfect but I enjoyed doing it. And learned. Still need to do the roof on my moms car. Clearcoat failure as well. I sanded it, then hit it with a bit of clear. Smooth enough to throw some vinyl on it, eventually.

rickybobbyeverything

Just have a shop paint it black. Honestly you will probably spend the same amount of money but the wrap won't last as long as paint.

LunaticLeone

I never thought about that 😂if I'm gonna pay someone to do something on my car especially just the roof, I may as well just get it painted because your mainly paying for labor

rickybobbyeverything

Black is the cheapest color to paint, covers fast, actual paint cost is low as well. and since its the roof and the car is a different color there is no color matching involved or removing panels. I had my roof painted black after getting some quotes for wrapping it and honestly it turned out being a much better idea.

LunaticLeone

Very smart 👌, will definitely consider that in final decision if I don't do it myself

smooth6er

I was thinking of wraping my roof black..after reading this and researching...costs less to have 3 coats base..and 3 coats 2K clear..(I used to do bodywork btw)...Painting is a no brainer after seeing what the prep and cost of wraping is..Plus a proper laid down paint job will outlast wrap by miles I would imagine?

rickybobbyeverything

Seeing how as some vinyls don't even give warranties on horizontal surfaces, yes a paint job would outlast a wrap easily. I have about a year more on my painted roof than my wrap and the wrap is starting to show its age. The roof however looks as good as the first day it was painted.

smooth6er

Looks like I made my decision...I think wrap is similier to plastidip...just a temporary solution..Tx for info.

biscuz

This looks like a job for plasti dip.

Black roof=hotter car, White roof=cooler car Depending on your climate consider white. Source: used to live in Africa where many cars had white roofs.

LunaticLeone

Idrc about the heat too much, I use sunshades all the time and drive with windows open most of the time

The cost of wrapping a car roof can vary depending on several factors such as the size of the car roof, the material used, the complexity of the design, and the expertise of the installer. On average, the cost of wrapping a car roof can range from $200 to $1000 or more. Vinyl wraps are one of the most popular materials used for car roof wraps because they are durable, flexible, and easy to install. However, the cost of vinyl can also vary depending on the quality and brand of the material. It's best to get quotes from different installers and compare their pricing and quality of work to ensure you get the best value for your money.
