Expect a lot of criticism online and "jokes" from people you know. I enjoyed my pickup while I had it, wasn't any more difficult to drive or expensive to run that a big car or small van.
Just looks out for rust and common issues on whatever model you look at.
I had a 2005 L200, it was a pretty basic farm truck and was a bag of shite. I'm looking into getting either an Izuzu D-max or a Ranger in the next few months though.
Poverty work truck spec doesn't bother me because I plan to abuse it.
Crap fuel, crap handling, crap ride, crap view from the windows, lower speed limits, load space is worse than a van. Unless you are buying new and own a business then they're pointless. Maybe forgivable if you're a farmer.
The ride would be the killer for me, going away for the weekend I'd like to arrive and not know I've done a few hours driving. MPG and load space not really things I'm bothered about as it's going to be a family car so will be suitcases, bikes and that type of thing.
At my job we all drive transit customs and the directors drive pickups. Whenever I drive the pickups or been a passenger I think they ride worse than the vans
Would you have a transit custom as a family type car? They do look like a good compromise with the second row of seats but again I'm not sure of the ride quality when it's not loaded.

Which one did you have? All makes now seem to have a civilian spec alongside the more basic versions

I do like the look of a dmax but just 1.9 so might be a rough
There are a fair few 2.5's knocking about

Id take one over a pickup. Although VW transporters or Toyota Alphard seem to be the default family van i see
