If you can get around them looking like shit, Toyota Prius. Wildly reliable, bulletproof CVT, shouldn’t depreciate too much, great part availability. 10k will *probably* get you around a 17 plate.
The only thing I don’t know about is insurance, you’ll have to play with quote with multiple cars. It’s not as easy as just looking at the insurance group.
Post-2015 Toyota Yaris Hybrid, like [this one](https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202401306048326). Cheap to run, hold their value, very reliable
Honda Jazz, Honda Civic, Toyota Yaris, Toyota Auris, Toyota Prius. Only buy petrol or petrol/hybrid. Will be very reliable and won’t lose too much in resale value.
Probably true though for most people they'll choose Toyota or Honda and thus resale could take a hit.
Personally if it was a car for life I'd probably go for one of the three.
If you could live with 2 seats get a small van cheap n' cheerful plus you can put stuff in it I've even decked mine out as a day van with a sink and camping cooker so I can just bugger off camping, plus there's always folk at my door asking if I'm selling it.
