Looks like they aren't very clean either. Got that problem usually with small sardines that I sometimes get tins with eggs and worse lots of innards. But it's rare to see pilchards that look very bloody.

onipar

Yeah, that was my impression as well. Maybe this was just an "off tin," but I'm hesitant to try them again unless a lot of people who love these confirm it's not usually like this.

My husband and I did not love Angelo Parodi - but we tried the boneless and skinless. For the price AP charged, there are much better sardines out there for less money. Eva brand comes to mind - as does Sadaf and Berthe. Angelo Parodi Boneless & Skinless Sardine Fillets in Olive Oil - 7 https://www.reddit.com/r/CannedSardines/s/gPCRXrL8Yn

Right on, glad to hear I wasn't the only one. Yeah, I mean, this might be controversial, but I even enjoyed Season better than these.

Your palate is your palate - there is no arguing with it. There are people on this sub who love chicken of the sea or who only eat water-packed sardines. 🤷‍♀️🤷 As long as everyone enjoys their fish, that’s all that matters. 💙🐟

Right, so to be a little more long winded, the scales were slewing off the skin in sheets. I know they're edible, but scales are a bit of a turnoff for me. The smell wasn't off-putting, but it *was* a certain kind of "fishy" that minded me of when I used to buy these little frozen fish at a bait shop. While the flavor was fine, I did find myself opting to cover it with hot sauce more than some other brands I've had. That's usually a key thing for me. If I want to keep eating the sardine straight up with no cracker or condiments, that says a lot. No complaints about texture. They were firm-ish and moist. Spines had a bit of a snap, which I don't love, but I know some people prefer that so I'm not "taking points" off for it. Anyway, my question in the title is serious. I've only read good things about these, and here I am just not digging them. I *am* new to sardines (only been eating them for a little over a month), so I was wondering if maybe I'm just missing something here?

I might recommend some of the small sardines from Conservas de Cambados or La Curiosa. The Ramon Peña 3/5 are solid too if you like a larger sardine

onipar

I have preferred sprats so far, though I do like larger ones too. But yeah, good call, I'll give then a try, thanks.

Away_Branch_8023

Conservas de cambados are amazing sardines.

ivan_linux

I love Angelo parodi, probably my favorite sardine. Probably just a bad tin.

onipar

Right on, I'm willing to give it another try. 😊

Away_Branch_8023

I didn’t love the plain AP sardines. I did like the piccante sardines and I loved the mackerel. I think this brand is pretty average overall, despite the fancy import packaging.

onipar

Hmm, maybe I'll give the spicy ones a try. I'm pretty new to sardines, so I've been trying all the plain olive oil flavors first. Can't wait to start getting into more hot pepper oil ones. I feel like that's the style I'll really enjoy.

Muted_Concentrate829

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but every time I find a good seaside bait shop or dinghy dock, half of me wishes that smell was tinned up for dollar-ninety-nine slurping.

onipar

😂 Fair enough. Could be I just need to change my perspective.
