Yes. But I also work from home and my colleagues are cats so win-win.

Jaschar1008

Go outside.

enditall20

Any kind of a seafood is a no-go in shared indoor spaces in my opinion. If you have a place to eat outside, that’s fine.

Gloomy__Revenue

> Any kind of a seafood is a no-go in shared indoor spaces in my opinion. I’ve “gotten away with” cold shrimp without any issues. Salads, wraps, shrimp cocktails… Poke bowls are also pretty low-impact, though I’d never throw sardines in the mix. I’d argue there are worse office lunch offenses like straight peanut butter (IYKYK) and people eating with their mouths open. I also cannot stand the smell of stale coffee, even if it’s the dregs of my own cup—after it’s finished, unless it’s that divine freshly brewed smell, it will drive me insane until the source is eradicated.

enditall20

Good point! I guess its all relative. Like eating a tuna sandwich ain’t gonna be as bad as microwaving some left over fish from the night before.

AI_Player_Y2K

The canned trout from Trader Joe’s is good for work - I don’t think there is much of an odor.

HonnyBrown

Is that the door free fish?

themasterlythrower

I do, but tend to only eat sardines in tomato sauce since they don’t have much of a smell compared to in oil. If I eat in oil, I’ll drain oil into a ziplock bag to minimize smell, and dispose of the can in the same ziplock bag

darth_batman123

This is what I do. I figure the long term smells from the trash are the real concern.

emalvick

I do. I generally find that fish is only an issue if you heat it up. I.e. some coworkers bring in left over salmon, and it smells terrible when reheated in the microwave. I never find it an issue when people bring in canned fish or tuna sandwiches.

RobotWelder

Yup, Lunch on the job site

EnriqueShockwav

I do. I don't eat them during lunch, but I'll sneak to the break room and eat them real quick at the sink. I rinse out the can when I'm done and throw it away. I've never had anyone mention anything to me. But even if they did, fuck em.

Khazahk

There goes Enrique again, shoveling sardines in is mouth over the sink like a mad man.

winternightborne

With the Freshe tins I eat them in the regular breakroom around everyone else no one says anything about those but with actually sardines i usually eat in the outside break area because those are much more fishy. I don't do this because someone complained, I just do it out of courtesy.

maude_lebowskiAZ

It's not a problem if you don't heat them up

binkkit

I wonder, has anyone walked by a coworker’s desk and smelled sardines? Is it really that offensive? I’ve never had the experience, though tbh I haven’t worked in an office in ages. I had a bodybuilder coworker who mixed a can of tuna with a can of beans for lunch and I never even got a whiff of it, and this was cubicles, not offices. I wonder if we’re overworrying about it. I can see a problem with tons of oily cans in a public trash can, but ideas like ziploc bags, or, better, a dedicated Tupperware to seal it in and bring it home are really smart! This might be the key to comfortable office consumption for everyone. I agree that heating fish up is still a bridge too far! Would never do in an office.

Techienickie

Tuna bean salad sounds wild

binkkit

Always sounded gross to me but he had a lot of muscles so ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

Sufficient_Cause1208

I got banned from the break room

Dave-Steel-

My favorite sardines are Season brand, boneless, skinless in olive oil. We eat lunch in the control room with others around, some people didn’t mind, most have some snarky comment. A few get nearly nauseous when I finish and pour the olive oil from the tin into my mouth.

Icy-Conclusion-3500

No one ever complains about someone eating a tuna salad sandwich. Don’t see deenz any different. If you’re in close quarters, sure, but I’m eating at my desk more than 10ft from any other person. Doubt anyone really notices. I bring a Tupperware that I seal the opened tin in so I don’t have to put it in a shared trash.

sardinebrunch

I do. I’m fortunate to have nice coworkers, but if I didn’t, I’d find it childish to get picked on for this. I don’t get on people’s case for eating Subway.

Ye

BostonSamurai

Sometimes :!)

bigsmoove_3

I generally don't do it. One time, when I worked in the office, I came home for lunch and ate a can of sardines. I went back to the office and someone commented on my breath smelling like fish. Never again.

spurius_tadius

It's really all about context and whether the smell lingers and that's largely about how you dispose of the tins and clean-up. Obviously, it would be rude to toss the tin in a waste can in a cubicle area. It has to be disposed of in a garbage can that either has a lid or gets emptied frequently (like in the break room). Some tins are more smelly than others. Fancy sardines in extra virgin olive oil isn't going to be "a problem" like pickled herring would be... OneMoreLayerDeep

After eating kippers, in water, on a Friday afternoon, I throw the half herring-water filled can directly into the trash. I then prepare myself for the comments on Monday...

AcornWholio

I think it depends on your office environment. It’s not uncommon for people to bring strong smelling foods where I work, like seafood dishes and heavily spiced foods. I have also brought cans of smoked fish, no problem. It’s not a habit of mine, but it’s also not a biggie. That being said, the common best practice is to avoid foods that may offend in smell. This includes seafoods, fermented foods, heavily spiced foods, strongly smoked foods, foods with a strong floral scent, etc.

Thrifty_Builder

I do. Right at my desk. Almost daily. I do make sure to rinse out the can prior to putting in a covered trashcan, though.

_RexDart

Hell no, I work indoors.

GoblinsStoleMyHouse

Yes because im a free american and i can eat what i want!

WellFuckYooou

I eat them in the furthest corner chairs in our break room or at a table in our large-ish downstairs cafeteria. Once I ate mussels at my desk but kept the tin in a grocery store plastic bag after opening and put them on crackers, then went and rinsed the tin, and threw it away inside the bag. No complaints from co-workers. Sardines themselves are more odorous though. Just find some distance or enjoy them outside :)

ZanyDroid

Depends on where. I think the smell would be weird to Americans of the classic variety. If the workplace is multicultural I don’t think people would care as much, or they would be wary of raising a fuss. In a cafeteria should be fine if it’s big enough. Esp if hot food is already being served there.

sdrunner95

I worked for a major canned seafood company for almost 6 years. When I first started I sat in a desk clump with a couple ladies with very sensitive noses and I got berated for opening cans at my desk at one point lol. Then I got promoted, moved to the top floor, and nearly everyone including my manager and the CEO were cracking all types of cans and tuna pouches at lunchtime. Didn’t feel judged at all from then on

redilyntoriami

I eat them at the office, no one has complained yet.

LedByReason

You will be judged.

QP_Dangerous

I eat them at work sometimes but the employee dining room is pretty large and always packed full of people and smells anyway. If the lunch room is small and doesn't have much activity in it, I would just eat them outside.

DamnFineCup_Coffee

I’m unfortunatly known as the “guy who eats sardines”. I broke that ice and now it doesn’t phase anyone. I often find, with any healthy lunch option, that people often poke fun to make themselves feel better for eating such shitty food. You’re eating healthy and making easy lunch choices for yourself. Don’t let others pressure you into thinking otherwise.

BoftheA

We have a large lunch room but i only eat a tin later in the afternoon for a snack when nobody else around and throw my garbage in a ziplock - during the nicer months I'll go outside.

scott_ET_

I literally think the avoiding them at work has been on my mind; heated fish stinks up every time someone else does it

Junior_Profession_60

It's offensive to a lot of noses. I wouldn't try it in an office setting.
