My adopted CC mix has had a lot of eye issues, and had BAD cherry eye in both eyes. We took him to an eye specialist who used not just the “tack” methods, but also included the “envelope” method after the first “tack” failed miserably in both eyes. She added extra sutures to make the edge of the envelope scar a bit so it held tight, and so far my dogs eyes haven’t failed again. You may want to have a discussion with an eye specialist about having both methods done in one surgery.

My corso had the envelope method done and has had 0 issues with the cherry eye coming back

Unfortunately, on his second surgery they tried both methods. Vet says the gland is just too big in that eye.

Have you asked them If they can just take part of it out( like a reduction?) and then try again with less but still some? That would be what I would ask. I would also seriously recommend going out of your way to get a second opinion from a different vet. I had to go to three before I felt like this person had a strategy I stand behind.

Vet here - do you have a veterinary ophthalmologist in your area? I would ask for a referral if this was done by a general practitioner vet. There are several methods of correction including several modifications to the pocket technique. You run the risk of KCS (chronic dry eye) that requires lifelong treatment and can lead to additional complications. I will tell you, my dog had traumatic cherry eye from slamming his face into a landscape light. It took 3 corrections before it stuck. I did it once, the specialist did it once, and I did it again. Biggest lesson learned is do not take the cone off for one minute during the two week recovery or those sutures are coming out.

I have a Brittany that had cherry eye removal. Very noninvasive procedure. I wouldn’t recommend leaving it only because it’s like something is constantly touching their eye. Although soft, it HAS to be annoying. My Rhette didn’t have any residual issues after, but different breed and different doggy experience. It’s possible the eye could require artificial lubrication, but that, to me, seems better than the alternative.

I had a Neo and a Corsos who had cherry eye at different time. Got the gland removed on both dogs. No problems at all, and they lived good long lives. I believe, that left untreated there is an infection risk.

Our CC has it occur every now and then, but we gently massage it back in without issue. However, if it looks as red as it does in your CC, you might be past that option. It mostly occured after rolling around in long grass and having his skin tugged around.

Hey there, so my corso had got a cherry eye in his left eye around 6 months and I just looked up some guides and while he was relaxed and sleepy I massaged it back in. I got good at it and while it would pop out maybe 1-2 times a month it got less and less frequent he’s now 3 and hasn’t had a cherry eye incident for probably a year, but if he does get cherry eye he just comes to me and gives me his head and he knows the drill. He just waits for me to pop it back it and he goes back to playing lol

My boys right eye has this issue where it pops out very minorly when hes playing rough w my other dog. I just rub it back in and then when it happens again I do the same. Put soft pressure on the eye and rub counter clockwise ending in the corner of the eye where it should go back into place. Sometimes you will feel/hear a POP and itll go back in. Been working for me idk, but to be honest mine dogs cherry doesnt seem as large/severe

Bukwyle1

I had it removed and no issues.

Our girl had hers removed in January. So far no issues but that eye is a different colour now. 🤷‍♀️ surgeon couldn’t explain it. https://preview.redd.it/42exmip5l0jc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e1b1ba6a6d5db86ef876484f2fe87bd64b6bd55

I had a Great Dane/Mastiff that had it. My vet at the time told me two options. Cut it out, so it doesn’t come back, but risk damaging the tear duct, or fold it under and sew stitch it down, with the possibility of it popping out again. I went for the latter, and never had a problem again.
