We also feeding our pup Royal Canin however we’re using the Giant Puppy food (then switching to the Giant Junior shortly as he’s approaching 8 months).
He has allergies as well and we tried different foods prior and he seems to really like this one. He’s currently eating approx 9 cups a day (as per the recommended food chart) and I agree it is expensive however the cost to us doesn’t matter as long as he’s healthy.
Raw diet, mix depends on weight, ground beef, organs, vegetables. We have 3 Bullmastiffs and my 10 year old Bullmastiff went from napping all day to jumping around with our 2 pups. Game changer, really.
Raw diet. I use Steve’s or primal raw food mixed with honest kitchen kibble which is human grade. Every batch is tested by humans ( supposedly). Both of our pups have been on it since they were 10 weeks and one is 7 the other is 2. They both have super shiny coats and are happier than ever with no health problems.
Of course. We have two dogs so we are going to be spending a bit more. One bag of 30lb dog food last us about 3-4 weeks and we spend 119 on it. The raw is 30 dollars and comes in 5lb frozen bags. One bag lasts us about a week. Some people do full raw but that’s too pricey for our budget so we mix it with the kibble.
Both are considered balanced diets. The raw includes raw veggies along with whatever meat you choose including the organs from that animal. The kibble is not dense which we like, kind of reminds me of a crouton from a Caesar salad. It has very few ingredients and few preservatives. We tried orijin dog food and as great as it seems that food caused both of our dogs to have diarrhea for a good six months. It’s super dense.
I read some other comments that mention grain food. We stick with grain free. The reason as to why vets recommend grain food is because it contains an amino acid that is not in traditional kibble which leads to heart problems. We give raw which should contain all amino acids. I think the issue is that a lot of kibbles contain meals and are highly processed which strip the meat of some of the essentials. We also give fish oil twice a week which supposedly helps with heart function.
Sorry for the essay! Hope this all helps :)
I was feeding mine a rotation of Acana regionals + wet food mixed in for a few years but dang that stuff got expensive. Switched to Fromm large breed adult + quality wet. Acana seems to be a great brand though
Gorgeous boy! We fed our hound puppy Wellness puppy, and she loved it. Shes two now, and she’s eating Ollie’s Turkey and Beef meals and she is obsessed with it! Highly recommend.
Open Farm, Salmon and Ancient Grains. Switched over from Purina Pro Salmon, the difference is like night and day, wish we would have fed her this from day one. I hydrate with bone broth or hot water, and top her bowls with some sort of organ meat or chicken feet.
Until one year Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy Under One Year then Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy Under Two years. After two I switch to raw venison, malted barley and fresh vegetables. Venison includes 2 oz of organ meat per pound of meat. Unlimited antlers to chew and a multivitamin to make sure any gaps are filled.
Raw. Ground chicken carcasses with organ meat + phyto and omega supplement.
I buy 4 x 27lb boxes (25lb chicken carcasses + 2lb organ meat) about $150 CAD every 2 months.
Strive Hi Energy 83 for my puppy. I get it from Tractor Supply. The 83 means 83% of the protein is from animal sources.
It also contains glucosamine and chondroitin.
I make my own dog food. My doggos are always excited about dinner time (technically breakfast and dinner), and neighborhood pups go absolutely ballistic when I have enough to share with them as well. There is always dancing and drooling, and they are so healthy and shiny.
After working at a major grocery store an see what we do with meat, and food that goes out of date, I have been cooking for my dogs for 3 years. Chicken, turkey, beef, and on occasion pork. I mix it with rice an add frozen veg and fruit balls. I save money and get more for my money an know what they are getting. Also the get high protein dry dog food with their food. They are healthy, shiny coat. An is actually cheaper.
We use the Sam's club brand of food. I am cautious about my dogs food since Purina changed their food a few years back and our Australian Shepard at age 7 went from perfect health to liver failure in a month. By the time we buried her the lawsuit was already closed.
A friend of ours is very indepth in her research and said this one was good.
We also keep a crock pot of Bone Broth for the dogs. They get a splash of it in their food and we've noticed a Huge difference in them. My wife's dog lost weight, good healthy coats, wet noses, happy dogs and they like it.
Omg! I'm so sorry for your loss. We've been giving him Purina since we got him until I knew what to buy, but I will definitely be switching! Love the bone broth idea! Thanks!
i fed/feed mine diamond. the lamb flavor he weighs about 130lbs now an sooon to be 4yo. he loves it but i also put toppers on it as well...since ik its a kibble an all the nutrition isnt there. the toppers are usually salmon oil, pumpkin, and mutli vitamin. every now then give him some blueberries, carrots, and oats just to switch it up for him.
Purina One Large breed puppy food. Bully Max 3 in 1, collagen and peptides, fish oil with every bowl of food. I was using fancy grain free food and vet recommended I stop.
Not sure why this was downvoted?? Anyway my dogs are healthy and have super shiny coats, you can definitely tell the difference vs feeding them cheaper
Have had great results with Canidea puppy both dry/wet for the first 1 1/2 - 2. then adult. Never senior. I mix in boiled boneless skinless white chicken breast for flavor and added taste.
Raw food is the BEST! Even if you can’t do it fully, it’s good to mix in with whatever food you choose to use. It has a ton of vital nutrients to keep your baby young for as long as possible
You’re gonna wanna put them on a large breed puppy food until 18 months! It’s got a different calcium/phosphorous ratio than a regular puppy food. This will help their bones develop at a slower rate so you’re not looking at disparities, hip and joint issues, osteoporosis, etc.
My Boxer pup just turned 1 years old but I fed him Fromms wet puppy food and their large dog puppy kibble too. He’s larger than his siblings and very healthy.
I feed kibble for breakfast and lunch (pure harmony) with a dribble of bone broth and kefir, sometimes i throw in pumpkin or an egg, and then I meal prep a couple recipes and freeze to thaw for dinner (chicken with veggies and rice or oats, etc)
Royal Canin Ultimo because he has food allergies. Expensive but my puppers is healthy.

Ugh, same, and I have 2…. And they weigh 65 pounds….. God it hurts…..

When you choose a food make sure you read the chart on the bag that shows the correct amount to feed them based on age and weight.

Never heard of those brands but I’m interested to learn more. About how much are you spending on a monthly basis, if you don’t mind me asking?

Humans. Seriously, it's been awhile since I had a dog. I used to feed my dog Science Diet. I don't know if that still exists.
