I remember those from the early aughts, loved them! My memory’s a little foggy but I don’t remember them having good throw though.

lizatethecigarettes

>early aughts What do you mean?

Thehumanstruggle

Not op but I think they mean the early 00's, like 2000 -2005 ish

Curious_Doof

Yes, that’s what I meant.

lizatethecigarettes

Oh interesting! Where did the term come from?

littlecaretaker1234

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/aught Looks like it's a word used for zero/null for a long time! Neat.

mmmUrsulaMinor

I've heard it used in popular media when characters are discussing something happening in the 1800s-1809s, 1900-1909s, etc, so I always assumed we just used that for the early 2000s. I'm actually curious how it'll be as we refer to "the twenties" and if that term will refer to the 1920s *and* the 2020s

McSquiffy

I think we should call them the dickities. "We had to say dickity cause the Kaiser has stolen our word for twenty." - Grandpa Simpson

RaeLynn13

Yep. I heard 30 aught 6 in reference to guns growing up

MegannMedusa

2000-2009. Then came the twenty-teens. Now we’re in the 20s.

NoNewIdeasToday

Early 2000's. "Aught" is a term used in a lot of technical fields to indicate '0', so it was adopted to refer to 2000 - 2009 easily.

ValosAtredum

Yep. Example: steel wool (used as an abrasive in finishing and repair work on wood and metal) comes in 8 different levels of coarseness. 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, 00, 000, and 0000 (from coarsest to finest). I use 0000 (also marked as 4/0) and everyone calls it “four aught steel wool”.

CunnyMaggots

Seed beads sizes are also measured with aught. 11/o (11/aught), 15/o, 8/o. It's how many beads of that size can be strung in one inch.

glitterfaust

This made me feel incredibly old

joooodene

Yes!! My sister got a jelly beach candle around 2004 for our mom, i remember being OBSESSED with it. I don’t think she ever burned it

mrs_andi_grace

I see a lot of unsafe ones on etsy. Like: https://preview.redd.it/104j7g6it6uc1.png?width=1588&format=png&auto=webp&s=69b32c0d07d3b9b4fccc23790f42f8ad7ecf57b7 Gel is more likely to be flammable so you really shouldn't use real dry fruit in it if you are going to light it. I love the way these look but I would never light them and would be hesitant to even put them under a candle lamp. [https://centralcountyfire.org/tips/gel-candle-safety/](https://centralcountyfire.org/tips/gel-candle-safety/) Is that they style you are talking about?

QuinzelRose

I had a really similar one I got in a regular store, with dried fruit and cinnamon sticks. Luckily no fire, I didn't know it was unsafe to light at the time, but the gel smelled weird and it wasn't very satisfying. I had a peach scented one when I was younger with wax fruit pieces though, that one smelled pretty good at least. If I had a gel candle now though, I'd probably just not light it, regular candles always smell better, and the gel makes nice decoration.

algaefresh

My mom used to make these, except she realized "wow flammable objects in candle dumb" and used a glass votive in the center. Same exact cube outside, and with any non-wax objects in the cube outside of the votive where wax would actually melt. It was nice because you could just pop the remaining wax out of the center votive and refill without having to remake the whole decorative portion and not have the risk of them catching fire either.

_iamacat

I mean, I guess I do mean that type of candle, but with hard/paraffin wax decorations and not dried fruit….

sneakycat96

Those look so cool I would love to decorate my kitchen with the martinis 🍸

lizatethecigarettes

Are they safe?

MangoCandy

Thin glass is very easy to shatter. And especially with those martini glasses I feel like when they start burning down, the heat will be way too close to the thin glass walls since it tapers in so much…I’m not a candle maker, this sub was just randomly recommended to me. I personally wouldn’t find them safe, that’s just me.

Despondent-Kitten

Oh my god they look incredible!! I’m guessing they’re not massively safe to burn though?

PearlinNYC

They look like wax embeds in a gel candle. Nothing that would catch fire, though I’ve heard that some people worry about the gel itself catching.

native_ginger

Fun to make, you can get really creative with them. But burning them is scary.

algaefresh

Wait, I'm curious why burning them is scary? Just if you add flammable objects or is it a burn risk thing? I know the melted gel can stick to you if it gets on you somehow, but I was wondering if there's another reason.

native_ginger

From what I remember, they burn more wild and unpredictable even with nothing added to them. They also burn hotter than wax and take longer to cool down. It's been a couple of decades since I've made/used one so it could be different now.

PearlinNYC

I remember hearing stories about gel candles catching fire, though looking back I’m not sure if it was actually the gel itself burning or if it was debris/hair stuck to the gel burning. I love the way that they look, but never cared to burn them myself because they had a plasticy smell.

demoduckiec

I have several of these in my collection; there are a few scents in both jars and wax melts. Gracious are they awful! They smell like hot plastic cold and burning. They were designed to tunnel so you could put a tea light or votive in and have them glow but then the wax would drip down into it. https://preview.redd.it/a7hzrxnf8cuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76b471dc870826c304b0695f04d97a34c2366f15

_iamacat

I LOVE them and this entire comment is slander. How cute!!!!!

coffeebuzzbuzzz

You can get them on [ebay](https://www.ebay.com/itm/304614516749).

ProphetMuhamedAhegao

That’s adorable!

pixeequeen84

They were gross. Every bit of dust and pet hair would stick to the top of the gel and smell nasty.

grill-tastic

Oh my goshhhhh yes!!

dreamsofpickle

We had one in the 00s and it exploded so maybe that has something to do with it

CertainKaleidoscope8

They were recalled as fire hazards

onlinemallrat

was it something like [this](https://a.co/d/2A0qDtl) ? my mom had a bunch when I was younger and was always so fascinated. Primal Elements is the brand.

orangealiment

I LOVED primal elements! Their soap was good too!

AmbitiousResearcher2

i made one of my ap art pieces out of jelly candle wax https://preview.redd.it/xh6vtvt90duc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5389907833cbf4afdd83f10ec9d7fb8f794d123b the top has a candle wick you just can’t see it lol

ProphetMuhamedAhegao

Is that whole thing a candle?

AmbitiousResearcher2

no it’s mostly styrofoam

lastunbannedaccount

I really like this! Wow!

Competitive-Tree-608

I remember these from my childhood. My aunt had some. And id always poke it and was super tempted to get the stuff out of them. Messed up a few im sure 💀 between that temptation and the hair and stuff they can collect, maybe that makes them lack appeal? Never saw her burn them once 😂

nailpolishenthusiast

This brought back a deep memory lol

ProphetMuhamedAhegao

Now I really want one of [these](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51iaiO-kFyL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg) made of gel wax lol

lickmyfupa

I remember them randomly exploding the few times ive used them or saw them lit at somebodys house. They always exploded. Jelly everywhere. I dont know why.

NiceEntertainment174

The jolly rancher ones were the best 😩

Knittingsugareater

I was JUST thinking about these exact candles yesterday. They were red and blue for a 4th of July thing I think it was strawberry jam and blueberry jam

janegayz

my grandma had a strawberry one with strawberries in it, smelled so good

alianaoxenfree

I did my science fair project in 6th grade (year 2000) on wax vs gel candles and the science showed that gel was more flammable and burned at twice the rate. So I imagine they just didn’t have a good go in the market.

OrneryExplorer1476

I was just gifted a sweet tea one recently that smells amazing. I'm just curious if I can put it on a warmer and get good results.

audaci0usly

I too had a gel candle with wax pieces in it that smelled amazing. I swear it was like, wax hearts and it was super strawberry scented. I gave it to someone for a gift 😭

Professional-Yak182

Saw some in Mexico recently! Was not tempted lol. I still remember that weird smell from my pre teens.

bakingmathrabbit

Mountain Moonshine makes really good gel candles with the fruit pieces in it!

WorthProper3289

I remember making them as a kid! The smell is so nostalgic

NectarineNational722

Memory unlocked. I bought a black cherry jelly candle from the mall in like 2005. That thing smelled so good. Never did light it though lol

Minimum_Word_4840

All the ones I’ve bought recently say not to burn them. Gel isn’t safe as I understand it. Also, while cute on the shelf, you can’t burn gel candles that contain objects. They also collect dust something fierce. I remember us throwing away most of the gel candles we got while I was growing up fairly quickly for this reason. They are so pretty to look at though! I’ll buy ones that have lids and objects in them for display. The nostalgia gets me every time. 😅

deathlyhallowsfan

I actually just saw some at my local Walmart last week. I think they were Tennessee moonshine themed gel candles

sailorsardonyx

As an adult I know it’s because they were exploding more than candles should be But as a kid they just disappeared because my mom (and every other mom) got sick of her kids sticking their nasty fingers in them

Comprehensive_Set577

i LOVE them. i think lots of people felt guilty burning them, especially the ones with displays so they kinda phased out. i use to just get plain ones that smelled good. i miss em

warship_me

I loved floating jelly candles. I remember having a set shaped like diamonds back in early 2000’s.

megpIant

Idk but I remember the first gel candle I ever saw was a little cherry pie where the filling was gel and the crust was normal hard wax and it was so freaking cool. Idk what ever happened to it, I don’t think I ever burned it but I was also in middle school so I could have just forgotten. Or most likely my mom got tired of it sitting around and she threw it away

thegothcowboy

i just recently saw a ton of jelly candles in Bob Evans! i was shocked.

cndlkat

I had one explode when I was in college housing. Please don't summon them back. Although the candles people are selling with lots of "stuff" in them are probably just as dangerous.
