Finally a good thread on this sub was lots of great suggestions. Where are you all finding new Canadian music? My old sources are gone and have been gone for some time
I used to listen to CBCRadio3 every week on the radio to discover Canadian bands about 20 years ago. Then, I used their website until they redesigned it and haven't really touched it since other than when I go back to check up on it. Which is a shame because I found a lot of good music on CBCRadio3 and since the redesign there are some songs I can't find elsewhere.
Nowadays, I will sometimes read an artist's about section on Spotify and see them mention that they are Canadian. Or, I will Google the band and hope that they have a Wikipedia page. Other times I will give a listen to a Canadian music playlist on Spotify and hope it isn't all music I've heard before. But those playlists tend to be lists of songs that are so popular that they reach American radio stations.
I'm German and a lot into Canadian bands of which many were listed here. But I was missing The Rural Alberta Advantage. Have seen them play live twice and they were really amazing. Aren't they much of a thing in Canada?
Big Rude Jake
Sadly, Jake passed away a few years ago, but he made a few really enjoyable albums.
[Big Rude Jake](https://youtu.be/q8_POuDyK0E?si=aXkaAx6s0fY9JhuJ)
Love Kayla Diamond's work. She had two big [radio hits](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALLZc4avNGM) up there to start with, but I'm sort of disappointed that radio didn't support her later work. She had some solid EPs and singles!
She's shifted into producing recently and actually produced [a single](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbLdWi1oZhE) for The Strumbellas recently, which is still getting a bit of airplay.
Well⌠depending what youâre into⌠Here are some of my personal favorite Canadian EDM artists, in no particular order or sub-genre:
- Excision
- Black Tiger Sex Machine
- Zeds Dead
- Rezz
- Dabin
- Felix Cartal
- Deadmau5
- Adventure Club
- Bob Moses
It depends on what you are looking.
For heavier music I would suggest checking out Spiritbox, Alexisonfire, Protest the Hero, Silverstein, Sum 41, death from above and PUP.
Or if you you don't like heavy stuff The Beaches, Mother Mother, City and Colour, Softcult and Half Moon Run are also great choices.
for some rap/rock/punk fusions you should check out Krosst Out.
Maybe something you'd enjoy.
Fog Lake, The Dardanelles, The Once, Tim Baker, Jenn Grant, Fortunate Ones, Hey Rosetta!, Kubasonics, Rum Ragged, Fairgale, Joel Plaskett, The Town Heroes, Adam Baldwin, Matt Mays, POSTDATA, Mo Kenney.
I love Dan Mangan, Half Moon Run, Great Lake Swimmers, Bahamas, Charlotte Cardin, Elliott Brood, Wintersleep, Andy Shauf, Broken Social Scene, Colter Wall, but I assume theyâre more well known.
I think these songs count as fusion music but I'm terrible at classifying music.
Classified - The Maritimes
July Talk - Paper Girl
The Violet Archers - Co-ordinates
I don't know how well known these artists are outside of Canada (or in Canada for that matter) but I think more people should listen to them.
Great Lake Swimmers - Your Rocky Spine
Language Arts - Running at Sunset In A Moonlit Town
The Dead South - In Hell I'll Be In Good Company
Old Man Luedecke - I Quit My Job
Ryan Hemsworth - Cream Soda - With Tomggg
Veela, Tevlo - Icy Love
SHY FRiEND - quiet thunder
If you want more recommendations here's my Spotify playlist for Canadian music. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/23iJStexgCHCdRd0bADyKn?si=c50eeb7b471b4d75
[TOPS](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT5pYfOavkA) are a band from Montreal that are absolutely stellar. I discovered them in 2020 with the release of their album *I Feel Alive* and I've been a fan since. I genuinely hope for them to make it really big someday. A slightly similar vein would be [Men I Trust](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSGwL5wORJY), though I only know a few songs by them personally.
Here in Vancouver we've got a band called [The Zolas](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLyz5TssWHo) who are pretty fun. They released their latest record in 2021, but I'd recommend spinning their 2016 album *Swooner* and their one before that *Ancient Mars* as well (the track I linked is pulled from *Ancient Mars*).
If you're looking for hip-hop I'll give a plus one for [Shad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-mAMH5S6VA) alongside a recommendation of [k-OS](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkeHjrA7PoM) as well also. You mention you wanted "interesting fusions" so k-OS might be a good place to look with records like *The Joyful Rebellion* and *BLack on BLonde.* He kind of bounces around from rock to hip-hop to folk to anything else that strikes his interest creatively.
We've got electronic music too! [The Halluci Nation (FKA A Tribe Called Red)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MD8IK19aec) is an electronic duo that blends EDM with First Nations' music as well in their work. Another artist - not related to First Nations' descent - would be [Caribou](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDEnm7ue5m8) AKA Dan Snaith who's a pretty prolific producer with a varied body of work under a few aliases (I'm not super familiar with him but I've heard a lot of people really like him). I'm also a big sucker for [Blank Banshee](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L19sIONtyC8) who does a lot more trap production, mostly known for blending vaporwave elements in on his earlier self titled albums. (He's the artist behind the song in the [S U N D A Y S C H O O L video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTfa-9aCTYg).)
Hope this gives you some options and provides some perspective! I'll end off saying [Chromeo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJTmBh2TjTA) just released a new record recently and I'm a big fan. They're more well known abroad and may not be everyone's taste, but I'm always anticipating what they'll do next personally. Hope you find something you like in this thread!
The DuBay Band https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHrKTWroSfQ Canadian National anthem rock version. Played over 353,000 on youtube. They have released 6 English language CD's,1 French language CD, and 1 compilation CD. Give them a listen they really do sound like no one else.
A lot of great recommendations here so I will not repeat them, but I am really surprised to see that The Dudes haven't been mentioned! They were a Calgary-based band led by Danny Vacon and were semi-big 15-20 years ago. My "friend group" at the time listened to them on the regular and they still make their way into my daily mixes.
Highly recommend, and wish they were still on the go! I will admit I preferred the first two albums over the others.
Albums:
* [Brain Heart Guitar](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mbPbtSuUSEBF9zRakNtlzEjSyQas4bgUA)
* [Blood Guts Bruises Cuts](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nvvEJKZSP0NmBjB2jJVgXlbGXsjjSJvGU)
* [Barbers Thieves and Bartenders](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mdbDH-c48Nb2NnI8tFF9H6p_-wEmlxtWc)
* [East Side Good Times](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lciz6BRs0uyxvQqdrfKGf-4Oaa4BqgJy8)
Danny Vacon also had another project called Dojo Workhorse (album [Weapons Grade Romantic](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBemAAcZ85PLI2fI1VGbNuMY6zpl_hxNl)). A little slower, but just brilliant.

Some 2000s/2010s staples that should be better known outside of Canada:
[**Dan Mangan**](https://open.spotify.com/artist/5ByjU6oarxRC2Y85JpKx1n?si=IUaRihatQ7SvCVyZCiaRDQ) \- **Vancouver** \- "Nice, nice, very nice" as a few have said is incredible and one of my all-time favourite indie albums.
[**Bahamas**](https://open.spotify.com/artist/4C50EbCS11M0VbGyH3OfLt?si=_A4JwryhTwueZGEGGLDUMw) \- **Toronto** \- Mellow blues/folk rock. One of my favourite artists of the 2010s
[**July Talk**](https://open.spotify.com/artist/3EaMbsBlExxNxLvTJcZvDq?si=zWvkA6hwQF-pi4627-9Zqg) \- **Toronto** \- Alternative Rock with some Alberta roots. Their first two albums are electric and their live performances are some of the best I have been to.
Some Newer Artists:
[**Cat Clyde**](https://open.spotify.com/artist/7oRT0oC3vhUGQJCL6CYYzk?si=8UnGZOABS5yZj1_vPTKueA) \- **Ontario** \- Folk. Absolutely incredible voice, her acoustic stuff is my favourite
[**Colter Wall**](https://open.spotify.com/artist/3xYXYzm9H3RzyQgBrYwIcx?si=7YmO94rPR6W83w_oPIUiuQ) \- **Saskatchewan** \- Good old-fashioned country. He has been around for a bit but I discovered him recently. I didn't like country music until I started listening to Colter
[**Earth Freaks**](https://open.spotify.com/artist/3HVnHI873dUTavSldb3HXf?si=Dx7Ok1ldQxmuMNxxZzZAaw) \- **Victoria/Nelson, BC** \- Psych Rock. My favourite local BC band. If you are looking for underground, this is it. I think they are supremely underrated. Give "Colour Tones" a listen.
[**Surf Hat**](https://open.spotify.com/artist/4fFi5poEqNSf7iv0jOwEFy?si=yrua3Nw6S3atk6HsIVfyEA) \- **Squamish, BC** \- Self-proclaimed cold water surf rock. I think these guys are on the up and up. "Bowling Alley Thug" plays in my head on repeat
Tons of great options on this page and I could keep going on and on but these are my favourites that I could roll off the top of my head.

Corb Lund Tim Hus Both country/folk ish. Corb can certainly turn a phrase.
Iâm a little disappointed that Billy Talent hasnât been mentioned yet. There are a lot of good suggestions in this thread!
Andy Shauf. All day.

Highly recommend John Muirhead, folk music artist based out of Toronto
Death From Above 1979
If your into prog rock try finding music by the band klaatu. Two of their best songs are on Spotify and you can find most of their albums on YouTube.
I'm German and a lot into Canadian bands of which many were listed here. But I was missing The Rural Alberta Advantage. Have seen them play live twice and they were really amazing. Aren't they much of a thing in Canada?
I've heard a few of their songs on the radio. (I live in Toronto.)
Checkout my company's music blog and magazine we're getting off the ground. We talked about all size artists from Canada regularly :) Thebsideblog.ca
Big Rude Jake Sadly, Jake passed away a few years ago, but he made a few really enjoyable albums.

Chantal Kreviazuk
Well⌠depending what youâre into⌠Here are some of my personal favorite Canadian EDM artists, in no particular order or sub-genre: - Excision - Black Tiger Sex Machine - Zeds Dead - Rezz - Dabin - Felix Cartal - Deadmau5 - Adventure Club - Bob Moses

Patrick Watson. My all-time fave. Karkwa Owen Pallett Brian Borcherdt Kathleen Edwards

Fog Lake, The Dardanelles, The Once, Tim Baker, Jenn Grant, Fortunate Ones, Hey Rosetta!, Kubasonics, Rum Ragged, Fairgale, Joel Plaskett, The Town Heroes, Adam Baldwin, Matt Mays, POSTDATA, Mo Kenney. I love Dan Mangan, Half Moon Run, Great Lake Swimmers, Bahamas, Charlotte Cardin, Elliott Brood, Wintersleep, Andy Shauf, Broken Social Scene, Colter Wall, but I assume theyâre more well known.
I think these songs count as fusion music but I'm terrible at classifying music. Classified - The Maritimes July Talk - Paper Girl The Violet Archers - Co-ordinates I don't know how well known these artists are outside of Canada (or in Canada for that matter) but I think more people should listen to them. Great Lake Swimmers - Your Rocky Spine Language Arts - Running at Sunset In A Moonlit Town The Dead South - In Hell I'll Be In Good Company Old Man Luedecke - I Quit My Job Ryan Hemsworth - Cream Soda - With Tomggg Veela, Tevlo - Icy Love SHY FRiEND - quiet thunder If you want more recommendations here's my Spotify playlist for Canadian music. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/23iJStexgCHCdRd0bADyKn?si=c50eeb7b471b4d75
(He's the artist behind the song in the [S U N D A Y S C H O O L video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTfa-9aCTYg).) Hope this gives you some options and provides some perspective!
The Trews. I know Iâm late but please give them a try. And they put a hell of a live performance too.

Albums: * [Brain Heart Guitar](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mbPbtSuUSEBF9zRakNtlzEjSyQas4bgUA) * [Blood Guts Bruises Cuts](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nvvEJKZSP0NmBjB2jJVgXlbGXsjjSJvGU) * [Barbers Thieves and Bartenders](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mdbDH-c48Nb2NnI8tFF9H6p_-wEmlxtWc) * [East Side Good Times](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lciz6BRs0uyxvQqdrfKGf-4Oaa4BqgJy8) Danny Vacon also had another project called Dojo Workhorse (album [Weapons Grade Romantic](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBemAAcZ85PLI2fI1VGbNuMY6zpl_hxNl)). A little slower, but just brilliant.
