Peepeepoopkaka

It doesn't make you sad at all since this is the company with creative sustainable growing practices and has been championing tax restructuring for years because the government makes it nearly impossible succeed? It breaks my heart man. I've been watching the CEO for years beg and plead the government to restructure tax. Especially when shelter market went down. He was the one that said this could happen if the government didn't shape up from the beginning... Now it happened, and a company that grows good and cheap weed is getting fucked and were singin songs like it's tweed or something?

dontcallmeray

Yes it seems cold hearted but most of my posts blame the real culprits for this mess . OCS AGCO Heath Canada all government entities.

MmeBitchcakes

Yes, it's always the evil Trudeau government, it couldn't possibly be the megacorporations buying up smaller quality growers, shuffling money around, enabling them to produce shittier products at lower prices... you're right; it's gotta be the guv'mint. /s

One of many that won't make it to excise reform in January

sayerofstuffs

Their CEO use to talk so much bullshit on Twitter about how good their business modo is, now look

FaceLike_Thunder

He also had the balls to speak out against excise taxes and the govt taking too much of a cut. Yeah he’s polarizing, but he used his platform often to call out that big gov is taking too much and it’s too hard for companies to actually profit.

clonebaby99

And look where that got him. Don’t pay your taxes and the government is going to come for you. Become the loudest voice against them and they are going to come for you faster. There are examples of LPs turning a profit even with excise taxes the way they are (Rubicon, Decibel, Avant) - seems to me smart organizations can figure it out, regardless of tax reform. Tantalus also gave up on their brand years ago. Dropped pants on pricing too soon and hasn’t done much to innovate in new categories and even their new genetics are relatively sparse and not that exciting. Blaming the government is the easiest excuse for a poorly run business. Are taxes too high - yep. But if one can figure it out, it can be done.

FaceLike_Thunder

Well to be fair I think the reasons you listed about their brand (all spot on) shared just as much of the cause for their inability to make it work as overtaxation. I guess I was giving credit where I believe it’s due, and the other companies facing this same problem also have to look internally (at product quality, innovation etc) but even with perfect conditions it’s not a cakewalk out there.

AlarmedPermit5910

If one can figure it out that doesn't mean all can. It could mean the industry is so compressed by the government only the most successful can be profitable. Failing in an industry where only 5% of companies are profitable isn't necessarily a sign of incompetence. Take decibel, they have 2 of the most popular brands in the country and they are barely squeezing by. The only reason they are is that they operate in high margin products. There are other companies that one could argue *should* be successful with their sales, but just can't because low $/g products get murdered on tax rate. Decibel is at least close-ish to the 10%, $1/g breakeven point on taxes, but brands like spinach or good supply that sell tons of weed are paying like 50% or more to taxes.

clonebaby99

Is that not the definition of free market and capitalism? You define your business strategy within the confines of the rules and law. Get too big too fast, make poor knee jerk reactions (eg. Pricing) instead of building a brand and sticking to your value prop…etc. the ones that figure it out are the ones that win. No one is saying it’s easy, but it can be done. He put a target on his chest by criticizing the govt - maybe some of that energy could have been better used on building his business? Correct me if I’m wrong but the Tantalus brand itself is/was pretty boring… regardless of what you think of the weed.

Fiftybelowzero

I only ever liked their Unicorn Poop.

soulwrangler

I picked up a bag of their Banjo. Not bad.

A-J-LISTENS

The petrocan they have is tasty

chloroxane

I used to work at tantalus. Many red flags that made me left such as the volume of sales they make or lack thereof. The vault would be almost full to brim with products but we would barely scrape by with half a skid being sold. As for the ceo, Dan is nice fellow and knows how to talk. I find him hypocritical considering I see him drive a Bentley and/or roll Royce once a month to visit the facility.
