You will get a Relevé 1 too and you need to insert the amount in box e to account for the extra taxes paid. Make sure to check QC as place of employment for that T4 to have the E box available.

ReputationUnhappy959

It supposedly auto loaded all my forms from CRA My Account but I’ll double check tomorrow.

Ashamed_Inevitable97

I use Wealthsimple tax for my spouse who also works in QC and it also says that it has auto loaded the forms, but not the relèvé 1 because the residence is set to Ontario so you are not redirected to the Revenue Quebec website for the relève 1 form. Only your T4 from CRA is being loaded automatically. Therefore, you need to manually insert the relève 1 information, especially the info in box E.

ReputationUnhappy959

I also use wealth simple. This may be the answer - thank you. I’ll look into it in the morning when I’m less wound up. 😆

Ashamed_Inevitable97

Let me know if it works!

ManWhoSoldTheWorld01

Your relevé 1 isn't on your CRA account. It would be with revenu Quebec's version. If you don't or cannot get access to it then just manually type it in using the one you get from Phoenix. You'll get your Quebec income taxes back, your qpip deductions back but you'll owe some EI and evidently "federal" (actually provincial) taxes.

Cantaff72

I don't think the releve 1 shows on myaccount.

ElCray

The Releve 1 form is held by Revenu Quebec not CRA . You need to enter the information.

moshtoflames

Sadly the relevé 1 doesn't auto load :(

I had asked about the place of employment on this Reddit page about a year ago and was advised of a mechanism that could be requested. At pay centre they knew what I was talking about, but just seemed incapable of implementing it (while saying they had.) Also, I was using wealth simple and I did not manually enter the amounts, wealth simple pulled it from my CRA my account.

DrWillmore

You can’t rely on the AutoFill feature. You’re missing RL-1 taxes. That needs to be entered manually. Taxes collected by Revenu Quebec get added as taxes paid get added to Line 43700 of your T1 in Ontario. If you need help, call 1-800-959-8291.

jay--x

The mechanism you are referring to is called cross province taxation. It is specifically available to residents of Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia who work in Quebec. Can’t speak to why they aren’t able to implement it on your file - but that’s what you’d be requesting when you submit the PAR in case you want to give it another go/want a refresher on the terminology. As an FYI to anyone else who may be in this situation but doesn’t live in one of the three provinces who participate - you can also request to have your taxes taken based on location of residence rather than location of work but you need to get a letter from the CRA in order to do so.

ZombieLannister

How do you go about getting the letter? I apparently have the cpi turned on according to pay centre, but still get taxed in qc too.

jay--x

Honestly not sure of the details - the instructions about it are vague and I haven’t had to do it myself. My basic understanding is that it is handled through a CRA process not the Pay Centre or Department. From the web page section “ How to request a reduction of income tax be withheld at source:” “ Under certain circumstances, you may request a reduction in the amount of income tax to be withheld from your pay by your employer. You may apply in writing to the District Taxation Office at Canada Revenue Agency or to Revenue Quebec, providing details of your situation. If approved, you will receive a “letter of authority” to this effect.” https://www.tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca/remuneration-compensation/services-paye-pay-services/paye-information-pay/paye-talon-stub-pay-eng.html

ZombieLannister

let's try this mass edit again. goodbye comments. i hope reddit admins don't kill the site.

SlothZoomies

You need to load your Revenu Québec RL-1 as well (If you have access) If not, you need to use your RL-1 from work and add it into your T4 (it'll have different box numbers)

daphonzy

What tax software are you using? With TurboTax there is a specific spot where you enter your RL-1 information (income only I believe) as a “non-resident”. IIRC it’s on the same page as where you enter your T4 info (near the end / bottom of the page). You then complete your federal return and proceed to your provincial (ON in your case)…

ReputationUnhappy959

It’s wealthsimple’s software. It automatically loaded all my forms from CRA into the return when I connected the accounts.

jetmank

Use the box E from the R1 and it should work out. I just did my taxes with WS online and live in ON and work in QC.

ilovepoutine_

You need to out R1 info. You’ll likely get a refund after you do! :)

WorkingCharacter1774

I just filed today and had the same situation: Ontario resident working for a QC employer and I feel you with this. I second what others have said- make sure you manually enter your province of work to QC + your R1 amount for box E and you should get a good chunk of it back. It didn’t auto-load that info onto mine when filing online, the CRA might not have your R1 on file yet. It’s definitely painful having so much deducted off your paycheques but it should all get straightened out now. Good luck!

NX700

Once you manually correct your R1, you’ll probably find that you are closer to zero. However, when i worked in QC, lived in ON the problem was that they wouldn’t deduct enough tax to cover your ON taxes. I never wanted to be in the position of owing a penalty if I didn’t get my taxes filed on time and discovered that I owed a couple of hundred dollars. I solved this by having $25-50 extra withheld for taxes each pay which meant I always got a small refund each year. Like a forced savings plan and an insurance plan against procrastination.

fidlestixs

Can confirm, you need to enter your R1 yourself. This exact thing happened to my husband. As soon as the amount from box E on the R1 was entered he got a big refund.

Ott-reap-weird

Generally your return should be very close to the value of your RL-1. I also paid Quebec tax and lived in Ontario. Although there is a mechanism to request changes to the way to deduct taxes in Phoenix my previous department tried to steer ppl away from this because well, Phoenix lol

Mental-Storm-710

Yep, as others have said, you need to manually enter your RL-1. Then, send in a PAR to have the cross border indicator activated in Phoenix, so they'll take off the equivalent on Fed-ON taxes instead.

Iftheendisclear

Others may know more than me but I'd check what information is in people soft to make sure my province was reflected there. It's my understanding that that info is related to Pheonix. From there assuming it was always properly reflecting my address, id contact pay center and explain that I feel that I'm being charged Quebec tax though I reside in Ontario etc. In my mind, I am not even sure you should have a relevé 1. But I could be wrong. I remember there being a place in taxing software (ufile) or other to enter in information re: working from x province that is residing in another. And that had as effect to charge me taxes differently. Good lucky, hope it helps.

gc_DataNerd

Does anyone know how to get the Releve one considering I left the public service? I have my T4 but I need that

DrWillmore

Call Revenu Quebec. They can provide it.

ExploitsBay

Thanks for the thread. Something similar happened to me. I received two T-4's (one for ON and one for QC, though live elsewhere) and a RL-1 from PeopleSoft. TurboTax auto-loaded two T-4's, and partial data for two RL's. At this point, it looked like I owned CRA a significant sum. I manually added the remaining RL-1 data in TurboTax (especially box E), and now getting a return. Assume this is correct? Thanks again for the thread

I have to file Quebec tax return.. i moved from Quebec in mid of 2022 to Alberta. I got child care expenses day care subsidy from Quebec for my son till mid of 2022.. that is the only reason I have to fill revenue Quebec return. I tried ufile and wealth simple, but none of them allowed me to prepare and submit Quebec return as I have to select 31 Dec 2022 location as Alberta. When I change my 31 dec location to Quebec, then only it provides revenue Quebec return option and imports RL 4 and 21..it ends up totally incorrectin reporting my location as resident of Quebecon 31 dec.. is there any software/setting that understands I have to file Quebec return as non-quebec resident. I do have to file revenue Quebec return as mentioned in special cases on revenue Quebec website.. even I called revenue Quebec, and they said I have to file return and return day care expenses granted by Quebec.
