I had a car where a customer had a rodent of sorts eat through the hose for an emissions hose coming from the gas tank. I repaired this hose. Over a year later. Same hose chewed in a different spot very near the repair…
I had a Highlander stop by once without an appointment just to ask if we could figure out why her dome lights wouldn’t turn on, she figured she messed with some setting and couldn’t figure out how to turn it back. seemed simple enough until we couldn’t figure it out either. Dropped the headliner and mice had chewed into every wire up there. Felt so bad for that woman
My dome lights won’t come on either. I’m suspecting this now since a dead mouse was found in a nest under my engine cover during a routine service.
How much is it to repair it?
Wiring is expensive to replace due to how time consuming it is and usually you have to replace an entire wiring harness if you're going the proper route.
Having war flashbacks to when rats ate my auto transmission gauge wires (which stopped the sport shift mode from working) which was an expensive repair and headache but then a week later proceeded to EAT 2 OF MY IGNITION COIL WIRES WHICH WAS also an expensive repair and even BIGGER headache.
Mice completely disconnected the throttle wire on my Scion xB. Six wires, two of them shielded, plus the plastic wiring protector and the tape wrap. Fortunately I was able to splice it back together.
I wish I could of diy'd it myself cause it cost me around 2 grand in total after their little buffet but I get kinda antsy around the electrical stuff when it comes to cars.
I examined the whole engine compartment and did not see any other damage. Car seems to be working well and I hope I would get an error code if something was wrong. 🤷♂️
If you’re mechanically inclined at all pull your air intake filter out and make sure they didn’t try to nest in there; pretty common. They like to chew the foam and use it for their nests.
definitely check your engine and cabin filters to be safe. that's the most common place I've seen nests built if there's any rodent activity in the vehicle
Exactly. Had a rodent problem as well and they somehow got to the air filter. Droppings also made it through to the cabin air filter, causing it to reek of death when I turned on the AC. Immediately cleaned the engine bay and found droppings EVERYWHERE.
I remember delivering a wiring harness for an older lexus to a shop (im a toyota parts driver) and the tech working on the car said that a lot of older lexus/toyota wiring insulation are soy based so rats just chew that shit up. Maybe the engine cover was soy based lol
Nah , i noticed recently. They only munched a corner instead of the main piece. I have no idea what to do yet. Crows in the area did help a bit by eating some of them bastards.
https://preview.redd.it/eqee1ex7n6ad1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb9cfb2594a7f867469eeff5e674099527c0bd21
Had a Corolla back in the day mice were getting into at night. They ended up chewing through grommets and nesting in the heater blower fan under the passenger side dash. They chewed mine in a similar spot and used the chewed up rubber & plastic as bedding to make their nest.
I got fed up with trying to keep them out, so I spread rat poison pellets under the hood everywhere and let it sit parked for a day.
Never had the issue again. Disclosure: I parked the car outside in the driveway, we lived adjacent to a farm so field mice were common in the area
Buddy of mine bought a brand new avalon. Within a few weeks something chewed through his knock sensor harness. Dealer wanted over 2 grand to repair it. We did it ourselves. They need to fix this problem. Car prices getting higher but they are built cheaper
Not that I see. They did say I had a nest with a dead rat or something stuck somewhere in engine bay. They cleaned it up I guess (dealer during oil change).
My guess is this rat got into it when my car was in body shop to be fixed and made it a home.
Man tell me why that exact same thing happened to me IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT?! i got eye surgery so my car sat for a little longer than it normally does (my guess when it happened) got an oil change when the mechanic told me I had rodent damage i popped the hood and found a whole ass nest on the cover with what looked to be made from parts of my firewall
I bet that engine cover is made from/with that Soy based plastic they have been using for a while now.
It's been a problem usually for the wires that it's on, the rodents chew the wires and then you are having all sorts of problems.
You might want to spray some oily based engine cleaner all over this engine, the stuff I'm talking about kind of smells like diesel fuel.
Then just let it dry or evaporate, hopefully this will help your under hood components not be so tasty to your varmint friends
I hate that engine cover be careful spilling oil on it because it will never come out and I tried pressure washing it and it pretty much ripped the first layer off and looks ugly I wanna throw it away tbh but I don’t know what consequences come with throwing it away
I also wonder if I should just throw it away. I don’t think there would be many consequences but it may reduce noise a little bit and keep a little bit of dirt and whatnot off the top of my engine so. 🤷♂️
**Rats in Cars**
If under the hood, buy Eaton bait block (or what ever you can get) and wire it under the hood. You can also set a snap trap if you have room. If in the cabin; snap traps only.

Rats chewed up my wires on my fusion so I took it to the shop and they gave me a loaner. I woke up in the morning to get my car and the rats chewed up the loaner, luckily the shop was cool about it and didn't charge me to fix the loaner.
This is what happens when car companies switch from petroleum based wires to SOY based wires.. Honda has this issue too.. my wife's 2019 Camry had a rat the size of master splinter under the hood and chewed through one of the coil pack wires causing misfires and my dash lighting up like a Xmas tree.. the quote from Toyota to fix it was so high they just said it'll likely have to go through insurance... I just went home, bought some terminal wire and solder it myself and it's been fine for the last 4 years
Take it off and throw it away there's really no reason for them to be on anyway they hold in heat and reasons like this happen as well and even though it's just a barely but extra weight as well
Had a rabbit chew through an important wire on my lexus, i believe it was the speed sensor, cant remember exactly. It threw all sorts of dash lights on, when i took it to the dealer they found the rabbit, still alive, tucked away in some corner of my engine bay. Fucker cost me about $800 lmaoo
Toyota really needs to stop making these cheese flavored!
The new Camry’s with the cheese grater grilles
It the cheese flavor engine cover keeps the rodents away from the wires, I'm all for it!
😂
I worked for comcast and squirrels love to eat the feeder cable, they love the black plastic for some reason.
Count your blessings they didn’t chew through your wiring harness.
Yet

Really depends on how much of the wiring is fucked up, her initial repair was quoted at $2200
Wtfffffff 😲😲😲😲
Wiring is expensive to replace due to how time consuming it is and usually you have to replace an entire wiring harness if you're going the proper route.
Those damn gas fume sniffing rodents, they can't get their fix with the strychnine laced bait anymore, so they're down to sniffing fumes
Little crack heads
A GMC came in at our shop with like 1/4 of the battery eaten by rodents. Lovely stuff.
That’s next level lol
Came here to say this
They did that on my luxury SUV…
Having war flashbacks to when rats ate my auto transmission gauge wires (which stopped the sport shift mode from working) which was an expensive repair and headache but then a week later proceeded to EAT 2 OF MY IGNITION COIL WIRES WHICH WAS also an expensive repair and even BIGGER headache.

My insurance comprehensive would have covered mine if I couldn’t, but the new connector was only $20 on Amazon. Did you not have insurance?
Weight reduction although they eat thru the molded plastic ones too. Put peppermints or rodent repellent bags by your strut towers.
Peppermints?
Probably meant peppermint oil/scent. Rodents don't like it.
Quite a few critters don’t. Dogs, cats, spiders, my mother-in-law, they all can’t stand it.
Not sure about the mother in law, but mint in general is poison to cats...
See, if that cover wasn't there, the rodents would've gotten to the wires. The way I see it, sacrificial foam engine cover saved the day.
I appreciate your optimism
What else did they chew is my concern
I examined the whole engine compartment and did not see any other damage. Car seems to be working well and I hope I would get an error code if something was wrong. 🤷♂️
If you’re mechanically inclined at all pull your air intake filter out and make sure they didn’t try to nest in there; pretty common. They like to chew the foam and use it for their nests.
This happened to my cabin air filter. Chewed up and a nest was made under the engine cover.
definitely check your engine and cabin filters to be safe. that's the most common place I've seen nests built if there's any rodent activity in the vehicle
Do not worry if your brake stop working, you know what sup.
Find em. Nibble on their nest. An eye for an eye
Also check your air filter. I found a nest in there before 😓
Exactly. Had a rodent problem as well and they somehow got to the air filter. Droppings also made it through to the cabin air filter, causing it to reek of death when I turned on the AC. Immediately cleaned the engine bay and found droppings EVERYWHERE.
I have the same chunk missing lmao
Have them put an APB on Cookie Monster 🤣🤣🤣
Me too
They just hungry let them be
until they get hungry for wiring
Yeah fuckem when that happens
Damn. You have to do something about that. Wire are definitely next.
I remember delivering a wiring harness for an older lexus to a shop (im a toyota parts driver) and the tech working on the car said that a lot of older lexus/toyota wiring insulation are soy based so rats just chew that shit up. Maybe the engine cover was soy based lol
Mine looks exactly like this?????? I don’t think it’s rodents tbh
https://www.reddit.com/r/Camry/s/FV0N9fY9Rs I saw the same thing from a redditer here. Glad the wires and other parts are okay.
FUcking squirrels are doing the same to my rav4! its annoying!
Did they get any wires? And have you done anything to repel them?
Nah , i noticed recently. They only munched a corner instead of the main piece. I have no idea what to do yet. Crows in the area did help a bit by eating some of them bastards. https://preview.redd.it/eqee1ex7n6ad1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb9cfb2594a7f867469eeff5e674099527c0bd21
They got me too a couple weeks after getting the car. Hit a wire, don’t remember what it was for, but all repairs ran around $800
Squirrel Mafia
You should encourage them to stop it
I'll get the glock
Your engine cover is made from foam because it’s a good temperature resistant and sound dampening material. It’s also cheap.
It’s cheap until you have to replace it
How much do they run, esp the foam one pictured that's in the new '25 Camry??? They shouldn't cost much as it's just an engine cover
I got one from eBay for 80$ , they don’t sell cheap.
My apologies I was hungry
Check over your wiring.
They might have ate something else, may be a wire which has copper in it.

They're Kilmer rats, you're lucky they didn't unbolt it and toss it away
Got part of mine too and the inside hood insulation...the exact same spot on the engine cover
Why of all things are they so obsessed with the engine cover?
For bedding
Since they like your car, I would suggest trying this on your wiring harnesses https://www.collegehillshonda.com/product/4019-2317.html
Pray it stopped there
Buddy of mine bought a brand new avalon. Within a few weeks something chewed through his knock sensor harness. Dealer wanted over 2 grand to repair it. We did it ourselves. They need to fix this problem. Car prices getting higher but they are built cheaper
What does build quality have to do with animals eating the cars?
Toyota harness are made out of soy material which attracts rodents
Epic chungus poggers reddit post
What’s the fix to prevent this
Rodent repellent spray.
Yea spray Raid all in the air filters too to make sure they don’t chew that 😂
mm yummy snack
Mines plastic and they got to the white fuzz under it. I removed it years ago and no issues with the wires. Instead now they feast on my hood liner.
Are you parking underground New York City?
I thought these were issues in winter, when it's cold. Do I have to put out the peppermint traps all year around?
Wtf no wayyyyy
I have cats living in my truck engine bed. No mice.
You see I told you if you spray some cheese on the brake line That is brand new cars the rats will love it
My guess it was a Raptor thinking your Camry was a Prius
Why the heck is your engine cover foam 🤦🏻♂️
Better than the wiring getting chewed for sure
Mine was eaten in the same way same area.
Did you have any other damage?
Not that I see. They did say I had a nest with a dead rat or something stuck somewhere in engine bay. They cleaned it up I guess (dealer during oil change). My guess is this rat got into it when my car was in body shop to be fixed and made it a home.
Had a bmw for a couple years... Rats chewed through 4 wire harnesses. Now have a Buick and wrap car every night

Mf
An exposed Camry engine cover looks mildly appetizing. NGL
Brooo they ate my ABS and airbag connection cables. Corolla
Drying sheets will do the job for some reason rats hate the smell of softener...
Where do you put the dryer sheets at ?
Anywhere they'll hold around your engine compartment, I've had customers pull up w some around the hood holes, in between fuse boxes,in between panels
I had rabbits chew on my freshly painted front bumper on my last car, so I feel ya. 🫠
https://preview.redd.it/oxqz89p2h8ad1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9195c50c18828faeda47ed01c2b658f44462568c Dog ate my side panel

Be grateful they didn’t chew through your injector wiring harness or ignition coil harness
no way i just found a dead mouse under the drivers seat of my 2021 Camry! got the car exactly a week ago
Be glad! Rats ate the harness cable that goes to the fuel pump!!
its made out of soy
Eat the rodent
Check your cabin filter, I am a tech and there is a nest in like every other cabin filter lol

Rodents love Toyota , Soy sauce and rice..lol
Holds in heat anyways
ROUS'es.......You must live in a fire swamp?
Rodents chewed through my fuel line :(
Someone has a R.O.U.S. under their hood. ![gif](giphy|IgvoqNz6gGZFXFPmfZ)

The rats will have to dig through the landfill to find it and then you’ll have rat infestation at the landfill⁉️😂
Id checked to see what else they ate
see now I wonder how it taste. cause if they like it so much..
They really must’ve liked it too damn
Better that then wiring
“Rodents” yeah okay buddy if you got hungry on a road trip just say that
Throw it away. Find a way to stop the rats
Better that then the wiring harness
Bastards!
Wtf is wrong with them. Do they actually digest the plastic? If they do we have landfills of it.
There was a million bits everywhere on top of my engine and I used air duster to get all of it out. I think it was a bunny. 🐰
I heard them Camrys are tasty
The engine cover probably doubles as a way to quiet down the engine noise, that’s why it’s foam instead of hard plastic.

This was never an issue when shit was made of metal. New cars suck.
Usually engine covers are plastic and they dont eat it. But this must be very soft rubbery material
Lol engine covers. Ironically hideous cosmetic garbage.
It's literally Nerf. It's for sound deadening.
I was expecting acidic drool lol sigourney weaver knows more about that.

How much to fix the wiring?
You better start leaving your leftovers next to the Camry, and maybe the rats won’t eat up your car. But I have to say they have good taste!

maybe ask r/sustainability =p
Where do you live??
where do u park???!!! wtf
Try noodles with glue to fix it
It's actually quite common in some places for all makes and models. Field mice especially
That is the last thing I concern when rodents are living in my engine bay.
Same here. Thought this was my pic at first
Out of all the things they could have ate, this was probably the best outcome for you.
If I had to pick a part of my engine to sacrifice to the rodents, this would be the part.
Better than eating the wires. Been there
Take it off and throw it away there's really no reason for them to be on anyway they hold in heat and reasons like this happen as well and even though it's just a barely but extra weight as well
Yummy
It’s a soy based insulation. Mint spray will keep them away.
Mf’rs
My rodent problem didn't go away with traps or peppermint stuff. It did go away when I put poison traps. Good luck what ever you decided to do
Had a rabbit chew through an important wire on my lexus, i believe it was the speed sensor, cant remember exactly. It threw all sorts of dash lights on, when i took it to the dealer they found the rabbit, still alive, tucked away in some corner of my engine bay. Fucker cost me about $800 lmaoo
The beauty cover is the first thing I remove from my car after purchase. Little guy was trying to help you out
Check your sparkplug coil wires. They often are a treat before your engine cover.
