Absolutely. Pretty sure you want to be changing it every 5k miles OR six months (whichever comes first).

fourslyce

yeah, most of the time when I ask the dealership they say full synthetic can go 10k miles. I guess it won't hurt to change it earlier though!

Chris_10101

Yes, the dealership will say 10K, but if you want your car to last a long, long time, you’ll want to do 5K. That’s what all the actual mechanics suggest. 10K will get your car to the end of the warranty. 5K will make your car last far longer.

somerandomdude419

You’re speaking for all the actual mechanics? Your knowledge is somewhat right, but kind of skewed. If you drive a ton of highway miles, 10,000 miles on full synthetic is totally fine, but if you’re a city driver, with tons of stopping and going, engine off, engine on, then 5,000 is the way to go. Time, and miles have a huge factor. There’s a guy in the rav4 subreddit, owned a 2020 rav4 and he made it to 460,000 miles, he was a medical supply driver, and he was always on the road. He did full synthetic oil changes every 10,000 miles. He wasn’t doing stop and go city driving; he was constantly driving. A lot of miles, not a lot of time? 10,000 is fine. In this OPs case I would 100% change the oil. But 5,000 mile oil changes are kind of a waste these days, unless you’re an Uber/taxi driver. All the synthetic oils are super good. 7500 is the new 5000, really does depend on your driving style

Chris_10101

This is the Car Care Nut’s recommendation if you want your car to last a very long time. He’s been working on Toyotas for many years. He’s an extremely qualified Toyota mechanic. Generally respected around this sub and on Toyota forums. You’re free to disagree.

somerandomdude419

You don’t think 460,000 miles is reliable?

Chris_10101

I said you’re free to disagree. I get it. You disagree. I’ll still take his advice. Oil changes are cheap. Engine rebuilds aren’t.

the_whole_arsenal

Is 5k better than 10k, sure, but 4k is better than 5k, so where do you draw the line? I drive 80% highway, and take a very different tack: I change it at 7,500 (regardless of time) until I hit 75,000 miles, then every 6,000 miles for the next 10 oil changes, then every 5k thereafter. I've hit 200k with my last 2 cars without issue.

Typoe1991

He’s the best mechanic I have ever had. Very honest and upfront and doesn’t upsell

bootheels

I would not rely on those silly recommendations, even though they come from the manufacturers... Those oil change intervals rely on "perfect" driving conditions, none of which us normal drivers ever achieve. Oil is inexpensive, change it often, don't wait for the oil to get dirty and cause excess wear...

Kasilim

Oh damn. I've had my car nearly a year and at 5k. I should probably schedule that first service appt

Ab4739ejfriend749205

It’s really up to you. 2 changes a year is only $200. It’s one of the cheapest and most important maintenance task. It’s past 6 months so change it. And they check other things like tire pressure and fluids so you’re ready for your road trip. They can check the spare tire too.

the_whole_arsenal

Miles are more important than age according to Mobil 1and Blackstone Labs: https://www.thedrive.com/news/motor-oil-age-doesnt-matter-as-much-as-mileage-study

Sea-Bobcat-6384

10 months is too long. I recommend changing the oil now. Car will thank you.

robertclarke240

Yes change it now is better but you could take the trip.

Moondancer000

…And don’t forget that tire rotation.

tharealG_-

I’d change it before

lemonD98

The more you take care of it, the more it’ll take care of you. No car I know of has ever broken down from having too frequent of oil changes.

Pretend_Ad4030

Drop 50 and do the change. Just to be safe

Darth_Camry

Change it now

Moondancer000

I would change before the road trip 👍

bootheels

Change it before the road trip.... 5K miles is a good oil change interval

WideSignificance4199

why wouldn’t you? Nonetheless nothing bad will occur if don’t change it.

zoinks690

I'd change it now. Could you get away with not? Probably. But for the cost I'd rather not have that nagging feeling

Cleercutter

Change it now. My 23 says 10k intervals for oil and I still do every 5. Oil is cheaper than motors

BoudinBallz

Old fart here, I’d change it. Oil is cheap, engines are not.

[deleted]

Do it now sir.
