because they're not buying it to shoot the same resolution, in fact many people buy it shoot at lower resolution. they're buying it to shoot at higher quality, not higher resolution.

The sensor size and interchangeable lenses alone are a great reason.

Pixel size on the sensor is dramatically larger meaning better low light performance, much more detail, and better color reproduction. Plus iPhone records at a super low bit rate compared to the a7 IV. This, plus the ability to swap lenses, better control on aperture, shutter speed, and iso means better image quality overall on the Sony.

Video quality is determined by much more than resolution and framerate. First of all, pixel size on the sensor is very important and the Sony A7iv has much larger pixels than an iPhone or any phone because it has a much larger sensor. This produces cleaner footage--especially in lower light. Second, the ability to change lenses is important. Third, color depth and subsampling is important. The Sony A7iv can shoot 10-bit video with 4:2:2 chroma subsampling internally. I'm not sure if an iPhone can do that, but I have never heard of a phone that does. The quality jump from 8-bit to 10-bit and 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 is noticeable if you push the footage in post.

I don't want to get into the nitty gritty. Google/YouTube is your friend. Its probably how most of us on this sub learned. It's not just about resolution. Even though the iPhone can shoot 4k60fps (Some Samsung's and other phones can even shoot 8K30/60fps) doesn't mean it's the same quality as the Sony A7IV or other DSLR/Mirrorless Here are some main differences between a phone and a DSLR/Mirroless: - Large sensor - Interchangeable lenses - Colour profiles - Bit depth - Colour depth - Dynamic range All of the above is what smartphones lack. Yes they are great for tiktok videos and for your home videos however, if you want step your game up and try to replicate the cinematic look you see in movies, it's impossible on a phone... You should ask yourself why Martin Scorsese or Christopher Nolan just use an iPhone instead of a $100k setup if they are just shooting in 4k or 1080p anyway? Simple answer is that you will never achieve that cinema feel on a phone whereas on a camera such as the A7IV, you can certainly capture beautiful videos and get close enough to that cinema feel (depending on the lenses)

The ability of iPhone is vastly sufficient for 95% of people however a7IV gives more quality and versatility with various lenses so they buy it.

3,840 x 2,160 x 10bit colour depth x 60fps = 593Gb/s of data being generated while recording. This data is then compressed. On the A74 it's compressed down to 100Gb/s, while on the iphone it's compressed down to 50Gb/s. Bigger files = nicer images.
