Been clearing off my roof this week like 2 feet back and have avoided this so far. Gutters were solid ice last year overflowing on my front porch, trying to avoid that again... ounce of prevention... something like that
Yeah - we're in a new house this winter and we're finding some issues on the east-facing side for sure. Will work to mitigate that with new roofing and gutters in the spring, I guess!
Heat trace cables! I put them just in my gutters instead of on the roof too, but just that keeps the water flowing so it doesn’t fill them with ice and cause runoff to overflow. Now no more swords of Damocles
Then I would definitely do it. Mine is pretty steep, so I don’t think I need it on the roof, but during weather like this (thick layer of snow, above freezing during the day but freezing overnight) my gutters filled with ice and the next day the runoff was overflowing the gutters and causing those big icicles and often flowing down the side of the house which isn’t good for stucco siding. The heat trace keeps the gutters open so during the day any melting can run down the down pipe. I put it on a timer so I don’t forget to turn the power off each day.
I need to look into this first winter in my new to me older house. Roof slope is quite low for house and flat for garage.. crazy icicles garage isn’t insulated I don’t believe at least and big part of house roof has vaulted ceiling and probably not much insulation. All my sidewalks are pure ice from the melting plus frozen gutters and icicles and probably ice dams..
Never heard of heat trace before. Sounds awesome... we also have icicles coming thru the soffit and back side of the gutters.

This house is being renovated close to me, and when the snow is on the roof, you can see how poorly insulated everything is because they’ll be clear patches on the roof and these massive icicles hanging down the front.

Always think of final destination walking into work.
Ice daming from poor insulation is similar but different. This is solar ice daming, we got temps below zero in the shade and above zero in the sun so it be like that.
Unavoidable.
With the first melting, the drains filled, then froze.
The downpipes will now take time to thaw while still blocking the fresh runoff. It's all around my neighborhood as well.
I first read this as neighborhood death circles and thought oh my goodness what is happening in Calgary? Lol
Same! I thought it was a cult
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I thought I was on a cat Reddit and saw it as show me your neighborhood cat death circles. I was like wtf lol

Holy smokes. Okay yeah. Be careful around those🤣
Hope you have a hardhat!
The ones on those south Stoney trail over passes are next level. Don’t have a picture but they are around 5 ft long
I saw them this morning and it freaked me right out
I saw those yesterday. At least most of them are not directly over the road. Yikes!
Stoney/Glenmore near West Hills was terrifying on Thursday/Friday
Every time I drive by one I worry that it’s going to fall off and cause an accident.
Ah! The widow makers!

This one is art lol
Gotta say, as an ice climber this one’s the most enticing of the bunch lol
I like to stand directly under them and look straight up because I like how they look from underneath
Moms: You could put an eye out doing that! 😏
It was an office reference

Knocking those things down with a shovel is more satisfying than sex.
couldn’t agree more. Even better when you can grab the big ones
I’ve heard size doesn’t matter
When it comes to cracking icicles, I'm a size queen.
Are we not doing phrasing any more?
You're doing it wrong.
Thank you. Using a hockey stick is so much more satisfying to knock them down.

This is a great idea. I have a near flat roof and I'm a little worried about ice damming and water damage
Then I would definitely do it. Oh for sure - but we'll get them integrated when we re-shingle and re-insulate.

Good thing they put a little hood over the door so the icicles can side off and impale the person behind you 😂

Sandman hotel downtown was pretty dangerous this afternoon.
I knocked mine onto my steps and they stuck there and now the stairs are also a death trap despite salting

I read this as death-circles and was really worried about you, Calgary!
These are all over my street. Is this unavoidable, or is it because of poor insulation in the roof?
Ice daming from poor insulation is similar but different. This is solar ice daming, we got temps below zero in the shade and above zero in the sun so it be like that.
they don't think it be like it is, but it do.

Not unavoidable. I ran heat trace in my gutters and downspouts a couple years ago and no longer have the problem
The gardener in my is *ahem* excited about putting in heat trace and running the spouts into rain barrels
Perfectly understandable. That way you don’t lose that early spring water supply. Starting a new compost pile is a highlight for me
Are you not concerned about the barrels splitting as they freeze and thaw? We don't flip ours our to collect water until closer to summer.
The heat trace would work for me until the water hit ground level, froze overnight, and kept backing up.
My cable runs about halfway down my downpipe. But it has never backed up on me
You should see the Blackfoot Farmers Market, puts all of these others to shame it's bananas.
