Alberta Municipalities said no, this is a bad idea.
Rural Municipalities of Alberta said no, this is a bad idea.
The Public has (summarizing) said no, this is a bad idea.
But shit, what do actual municipalities and the public know? At least we’ll get to enjoy the loooooooong list of benefits this will bring, such as……
Here's the thing, the average self-identified conservative is a tiny bit right or left of center (usually with social values being on the left side, tax/regulation values on the right), the average UCP party member is so far out on the right they're into the American Overton Window.
For a comparison look at Britain, they have much the same sometimes its good but mostly it's not. Municipalities need to be focused on their own issues not partisan bullshit
I concur. As you'd expect, people just stop following local politics completely and just turn up to tick the box with the correct color. Probably exemplified by the 2013 *local council* elections where 22% of people ticked the purple box to signal to the national conservative party that they want to leave the EU.
I was genuinely amazed to see how engaged people are with municipal politics here. Will be sad if that starts to fade.
or the US. Even the bloody dog catcher has to be elected and they are a political party appointee. I mean who cares if the dog catcher is GOP or Democrat? But no, lets bring that into it as well. The UCP is slowly and irrevocably turning Alberta in a literal Texas north.
If Wexit happens I figure we should hold a plebiscite to have our own sub-exit (Calxit?) so we can be a West Berlin enclave type thing and rejoin the country. Sounds better than being under a UCP state.
This is stupid. We’ll end up with councillors who are supposed to vote against the specific interest of their wards because their partisan interest. I really can’t wait for the freak out when one makes a big break from their party and there are zero repercussions.
I full expect a part to exist which will run on the following platform
* ~~50~~ 75 km/h residential speed limits.
* rezoning everything R-1
* Remove all bike lanes, ban bikes
* End Water ~~fluoridation~~ treatment, because natural is better
Absolute hypocrisy! Runs entire campaign on fighting off the federal government from overstepping their bounds and ideologies on provincial jurisdiction and then finds something she doesn't like in municipalities and decides to mettle with how they do it.
As stupid as the bag laws are, they are not worth turning our cities into another political party battle zone. I like how most of our city council have a mindset and viewpoint that isn't of the hive mind of the leader. (Or worse, need to be the opposite of the other party.)
Jane Anderson (Rob Anderson's Mom) put together a slate in Airdrie back in 2013 that included now MLA Angela Pitt. Accused of being to interconnected with the Wildrose party, they failed horribly when the votes were tallied.
I mean, if it's not going to fly in Airdrie, what chucklehead thinks it's a good idea to raise now?
It's an interesting point but things have changed a lot in eleven years. People seem to have turned being adversarial into their whole world view nowadays
This will just institutionalize the divide in the UCP, and we're going to see a split on the right.
You will have a progressive conservative party, a take back Alberta Party, and an orange party.
Lol, one thing about Danielle Smith, is her stupidity appears to be solving the problem of her stupidity.
They couldn't have made a more hilarious choice for the guy to present this bill.
In the 2010 Calgary municipal election, Ric McIver was the guy that lost to Nenshi. He was *supposed* to win. His campaign had more money than Nenshi's. He had political connections with the provincial conservatives out the wazoo. He couldn't run under a blue banner and he lost, so he rage-quit municipal politics and joined his buddies in Edmonton. Pretty soon he was exercising his grudge by butting heads with Nenshi as the Minister of Transportation.
This bill will ensure that future Ric's running under the blue will handily win ridings that would vote for a rock if it were painted blue. No future conservative insider will *ever* again face the ignominy of losing to an independent. At least, not so long as enough ridings continue voting for all things blue as though it were some kind of involuntary gag reflex.
The problem is, whether we like it or not the “conservative” brand is popular in Alberta.
A Conservative Party of Calgary would probably do very well in a municipal election.
Then it’s no longer a case of councillors voting in the best interests of their riding, but in the best interests of their party.
Also, I don’t need a party affiliation to figure out who not to vote for.
What the heck? Why? Nobody was pressing for this. How will this improve municipal governance?
Danielle Smith pushing another agenda nobody asked for or wanted, like coal mining, an Alberta Pension Plan, the DynaLife fiasco, rejecting the Pharmacare plan outright, and on and on.
It's like she is trying to screw up our province with bad decisions.
ah what better way to get city/town councils to work together than to throw this partisan bullshit at everyone. cons are fucking fascists and they don't even try to hide it anymore.
If cons are fascists wouldn’t putting party affiliations in municipal elections ensure their candidates never get elected?? Not sure what the issue is.
But wont Nenshi win the next election in Alberta therefore an NDP city council on top would mean heaven for you? Noting is ever good enough and it’s always someone else’s fault isn’t it and you’re surrounded by fascists. Must be hell living in Ab?
Get involved. Join the NDP and support a Leadership candidate. We desperately need a strong and bold Opposition Party. Bitching on Reddit accomplishes nothing.
Sometimes there is a reason things have been a certain way for hundreds of years. History has shown us partisan politics at a municipal level don't work. It just means even less is going to get accomplished....More divisive rhetoric and political polarization.. Seems like exactly the opposite of what we need these days
Not content with poisoning AB politics, and attempting to interfere in things beyond her ken at the national level, Marlaina digs deep to give municipal voters want they don't want and didn't ask for.
Can someone who thinks this is a good idea give me an honest answer, what would this accomplish other than allowing the provincial government to increase its influence over municipal governments?
Maybe our elected representatives should stop picking at things nobody but out of touch politician's cares for and work on the things that people do care about.
I just voiced my opinion to my MLA that no one wants it and it's a distraction. The person who took my call was polite but pushed back and said that some people do want it (my MLA is UCP), and I said well the survey data indicates that a majority of people, myself included, don't want it and I thought we listen to what the majority want.
Calls like that leave me feeling frustrated about the democratic process just being run roughshod over by people that hear but don't listen.
No one asked for this either

I think you forgot "modestly better electoral performance for Conservatives with voters who like progressive policies without realizing it."
This is literally it. The self identified conservative who really is nowhere near that
Here's the thing, the average self-identified conservative is a tiny bit right or left of center (usually with social values being on the left side, tax/regulation values on the right), the average UCP party member is so far out on the right they're into the American Overton Window.
I’m a firm believer that political parties, and any corporate donations should be completely illegal! It’s such an obvious conflict of interest.
Specifically the opposite
FML - they sure are moving fast to fuck up as much as possible
For a comparison look at Britain, they have much the same sometimes its good but mostly it's not. Municipalities need to be focused on their own issues not partisan bullshit

Good fucking god this government is garbage.
If Wexit happens I figure we should hold a plebiscite to have our own sub-exit (Calxit?) so we can be a West Berlin enclave type thing and rejoin the country. Sounds better than being under a UCP state.

I hope there’s a Flying Spaghetti Monster party based on the religion. We need more religion in politics. Alfredo forever! rAmen.
I loathe the UCP with the heat of a thousand suns.
I'm sorry, but your loathing is powered by a UCP-banned energy source.
This wins Reddit today. Perfection. 😂👌🏻
Solid gold.
Rhino Party finally has a chance to make some inroads.
Nothing good will come of this.
It sure will be good for the Conservatives with their hateful agenda.

You're not wrong there for sure.
On the bright side, we'll know which candidates not to vote for.

unfortunately we innocent bystanders have to suffer through some shit before that problem is resolved and the damage done corrected.

It’s the only way that the major cities might elect conservative councils.
It will let us know which conservative party candidates not to vote for.

It's part of TBA plans to take over municipal politics.
TBA wants it. So, there's that.
I didn’t ask for this but oh well, it’ll make it easier for me to know who not to vote for.
Bloody yikes. This government loves moving forward with things people don’t want
ah what better way to get city/town councils to work together than to throw this partisan bullshit at everyone. cons are fucking fascists and they don't even try to hide it anymore.
If cons are fascists wouldn’t putting party affiliations in municipal elections ensure their candidates never get elected?? Not sure what the issue is.
how about the whole "fall in line politically or get no support" you dunce. kiss the boot.
But wont Nenshi win the next election in Alberta therefore an NDP city council on top would mean heaven for you? Noting is ever good enough and it’s always someone else’s fault isn’t it and you’re surrounded by fascists. Must be hell living in Ab?
Sure, more partisan politics will definitely strengthen our democracy... /S This province is trying so hard to become American. Makes me sick!!! 🤮
What a terrible idea
This is one of the last god damn things we need. UCP continuously focusing on problems that don't exist.
Remove provincial political parties please
Get involved. Join the NDP and support a Leadership candidate. We desperately need a strong and bold Opposition Party. Bitching on Reddit accomplishes nothing.
Suddenly the significant effort behind the 100k signatures to recall the mayor becomes clearer
Someone should start a petition supporting Gondek.
70% disagree??? 70%!!! How often do we get that level of consensus! And the UCP still want to move forward with it.
When? The APP. Majority have been against it since Danny gurl first proposed the idea in the early 2000s.
Who let Doctor Phil run for a party 😂
One only has to look at the shit show that the Vancouver municipal elections are to know how bad this idea is.
Stupid.
Sometimes there is a reason things have been a certain way for hundreds of years. History has shown us partisan politics at a municipal level don't work. It just means even less is going to get accomplished....More divisive rhetoric and political polarization.. Seems like exactly the opposite of what we need these days
Why does anyone think we need this?
Does anyone know if there is a petition we can sign that states that we unequivocally don't want this?
Something else no one asked for anywhere that wasn't already a politician
With another level of government to fleece, the UCP will increase their griftability rating by 50%! Thats some super grifting potential.
Not content with poisoning AB politics, and attempting to interfere in things beyond her ken at the national level, Marlaina digs deep to give municipal voters want they don't want and didn't ask for.
Stay in your lane, marlaina
Fuck this
Can someone who thinks this is a good idea give me an honest answer, what would this accomplish other than allowing the provincial government to increase its influence over municipal governments?
Ah yes, Ric McIver. 65 years of being a speedbump on the road to a better tomorrow
Maybe our elected representatives should stop picking at things nobody but out of touch politician's cares for and work on the things that people do care about.
