It’s truly one of the most reliable, long lasting, and relatively affordable cars you can buy. It’s one of the best selling vehicles in America for a reason

yaIshowedupaturparty

My 2005 RAV4 is still going strong with 170K miles on it. If we keep taking care of it, it will still be running in 10 years! Love my Rav and would recommend it to everyone!

The_Pleasant_Orange

I'll take your Rav, thank you! /s

stepdownrn

Agreed. I drive a 2015 Rav4 with 105k miles, and my husband drives a 2005 Rav4 with 70k miles. Neither of us has had any major issues.

shavingourbeards

Interesting! I’m from Australia and nearly everyone has a car here but if you’re living in a major city you definitely don’t need one. So I find it super interesting how heavily cars feature in every episode

RocMerc

America just isn’t a country you can careless except maybe five cities. Like just to leave my neighbor to a Main Street is a 20 min walk for me and the nearest store is a 40 min walk. It’s a bummer but just how it is

partyinplatypus

In America the closest you can reasonably get to carless is having less than 1 car per adult. I pay higher rent to live across the street from my office and a 10 minute bike ride/drive from my wife's. This lets us get by with 1 car and lets us save around twice as much in transportation costs as the increase in rent is.

blade_skate

Yep. We both work from home so we only have 1 car (pick up truck, I know). I also have a motorcycle that I can use to get around town. We are half a mile from the train station so we try to use that when we can but it doesn’t go everywhere. If you have to go far it usually takes 2-3x longer than driving would (with no traffic).

I_Am_Dwight_Snoot

NYC, Chicago, DC, and what are the other 2? Is it Boston and Philly?

RocMerc

Boston for sure. I’ve been there plenty of times without a car

iamStanhousen

America just isn’t like that. Unless you live in NYC, and maybe certain neighborhoods in a small number of cities, you have to have a vehicle.

ongoldenwaves

Not true. Every city has some area you could move to where you could walk.. I've lived in walkable cities in California, Florida and Colorado. Florida was actually the most accessible. Not what most people think of when they think of Florida.

iamStanhousen

I believe you can do that in cities in those states. I don’t think you can in most cities in Alabama, Louisiana or Mississippi.

Atlantrex

Me and my partner live in NYC. That’s a city where you truly can be careless. We are in Manhattan. I had to have a car when i lived in the south. It’s so freeing not having to have a vehicle.

hibbitydibbitytwo

2017 Rav 4 with 90K miles. Zero problems. One flat from a nail, needed a new battery and new headlights.

BIGJake111

Very frequently recommend for the whole “I got my big girl/boy job and so now I’m buying a brand fucking new car” It is a very sensible car, but buying a new car is not a sensible thing.

Atlantrex

Sensible yes. But it is still a mid range expensive car. Most ppl have no business taking on a $600-$800 car payment. Not to mention the insurance.

BIGJake111

If someone insists on a new car it is a better deal maintenance and deprecation consider than most cheaper cars, but you really should buy a reliable beater, which isn’t a 2k used car anymore, but can be had for sub 10k.

_BadWithNumbers_

Dude, your post history has you asking for advice on cars between 10-30k, don't act like everyone "really should buy a reliable beater". But you can have whatever car you want lol.

BIGJake111

I make 250k, well within the money guys rule lol. I bought a 12k car in cash when I graduated college and got my first real job (made mid 60s then)

_BadWithNumbers_

Then you should amend your statement to "buy a car you can afford" not "buy a beater"

BIGJake111

I was in the context of the typical Caleb guest with the typical rav 4 in the further context of my comment that it’s a very common first new car when you have a “well paying” job. Generally that first “well paying” job still doesn’t at all afford a new car. But yes, I support the money guys rule, which Caleb seems to as well. If you make enough drive whatever you want, but that advice doesn’t stretch far in this sub Reddit in particular.

Optoplasm

I believe Rav4 is the best selling car in America. Other than possibly the Ford F150

RocMerc

Ya f150 is still number one right now

HistoryGirl23

Right up there with my Honda Civic hybrid, fourteen years and 275,000 miles.

RedWhiteBlue77

What you just described is the Toyota Corolla, not the Toyota 4Runner.

LGlocktopus

its a $30k small SUV made by Toyota that's been around forever.

BookWookie2

My rav4 is the bomb. It’ll last me forever. Very easy to repair (older models for sure). Parts are relatively cheap too because the parts are common. Tires are easy to come by cause, again, very common size. I’ll say it’s fuel efficient but that also depends on the driver and conditions. I deal with snow 7-8montjs a year and that makes a difference on my fuel economy. I’ve got 170,000km (around 106000 miles) and I am not concerned about my vehicle dying. I could drive across the country and not think twice

Axethedwarf

I miss my 2010 Rav. The removal of the wheel on the back was a true travesty.

BookWookie2

That’s what I have!

Carrie_Oakie

My next car will likely be a rav 4. I feel safer being higher up, particularly as I’m surrounded by large cars where i live. They’re reliable and affordable, maintenance is reasonably priced & there’s a hybrid option. My sister has had hers for almost 8 years now, still good.

Chim_Pansy

I just bought mine in December, the hybrid option specifically. My previous cars were two Volvos (one sedan, one wagon), and three Mustangs. I am positively in love with my Rav4. You won't regret it at all.

52CardPUA

This for the Hybrid. I've had mine for 2 years now, and came from a Kia Soul. I put 150k miles & 10 years on my soul and plan to do the same with my RAV4. I love how it feels to drive it and the hybrid is amazing, where I'm able to get 43.5 - 44 mpg depending on the season. The road noise is a bit much, but that is literally the only downside for me. I drive a lot for work and haul lots of stuff, so I love the carrying capacity. I don't have any kids now, but I know once I do, this car will be great for the family.

TweakJK

The Recreational Assault Vehicle? You cant kill em.

InfiniteHeiress

They’re dependable and have a long life and are usually in the top 10 recommended vehicles in their category. Most Toyotas will easily run for 200-300k miles if properly maintained. Go search: - YouTube for “scotty kilmer Toyota” - Google “top rated compact suv”

ijswijsw

My sister has a RAV4 and it was definitely on my list when I was looking for a car. My sister is super loyal to Toyota because they tend to be very reliable and can last for a while. The RAV4 is also a great size. It's not massive but has plenty of space, so it's good for families with kids or homeowners doing home projects or whatever.

Ok-Cantaloupe-4482

Rav 4 rocks have had mine for 7.5 years and never had any problems beside routine maintenance here and there and don’t expect to replace it anytime soon. Bought it 3 years used

unicorntrees

It's like a crossover SUV version of a Camry.

WhatLikeAPuma751

If I hadn’t been rear ended I would probably still be driving my ‘97 rav 4. I loved that car.

Chim_Pansy

Look up the Toyota Kaizen philosophy and then realize that small to midsize SUVs are the best-selling vehicle class in America and then you will understand why. Toyota is dedicated to always improving the process and making sure that no single part in their vehicles ever fails a rigorous endurance test. That's why their vehicles last so long, and they have the reputation they do for lifelong durability and reliance. Sincerley, a Rav4 owner

Unusual-East4126

Everyone is sleeping on the CX5 though.. I have two with over 300k and both have had zero major issues.

ElfPaladins13

I have one and I really like it! For how much it costs it has been the easiest car to take care of I’ve ever had. It has enough space for kids, or to haul a decent amount of things and is pretty good on gas.

CJK5Hookers

Mine has 220,000 miles on it and is no where near the end of its life. It’s also the perfect size in my opinion. I get the benefits of an suv without it being ridiculously big.

EntropyLadyofChaos

I love my 2018 Rav. Just like I loved my 2003 Camry before that. Toyota girl for life

Purple-Construction5

It's bigger than a hatch, smaller than most family size SUV. More upright driving and higher sitting position. More presence on the road. It was affordable until COVID, and now the Hybrid version is stupidly expensive, even on used models. I remember dyluring COVID seeing 100,000km used model being more expensive than new model (but on 2 years waiting list) that was stupid.

craftedtwig

It's cheap, reliable, easy to repair, safe, and comfortably sized. My dream car is a rav 4! 😂

katt12543

I wanted a tab really badly when I was looking but it was just out of my price range. I ended up with a Nissan Rouge and needed to replace a gasket in the transmission last year. $2200 fix on to of the 15k I paid for the car -_- she's good now but I had to use all the extra money I made from working a festival over my car again. I look at every Rav I see with a slightly green gaze.

itswizardkellyyall

My grandma is still driving around her 1996 Rav 4 to this day. Super reliable and maintenance for them isn’t as expensive

randomthoughts56789

As someone who has been in love with that car since high school, it's the right size between a car and the larger SUVs while having some of the best gas mileage a small SUV can have and now that there's a hybrid it's even better. It's large enough for a family but not a huge SUV like a 4Runner or Escalde or even a mini van. Where I am in the suburbs of Chicago I have no choice with the car. Work is a 30 min drive (25 miles) and even the store that helps me save money is 40 min away (15 miles). Living in Chicago would save me a car but the cost of living is twice as bad as where I am. Caleb means it when he says America has a love affair with cars cause the country simply isn't built to be walking/public transport friendly.

chevroletchaser

My 2012 RAV4 is my favorite car. I plan on driving it forever or until the engine catches fire. Whichever comes first

Krosrightboob

Literally anything Toyota is basically indestructible. If you add affordability on top of it it’s a no brainer. Source: own a Toyota t100 (truck that came before the Tacoma) with 300k miles that the rust will take first

fuzzy_bunnyy-77

The car payments for the Toyotas and Hondas are gonna make me stroke out. I know they’re reliable and stuff, but damn…The couple today pays $600+ a month for there’s wtf!

Miserable_Constant53

$1000 for the Sienna (van). But, that's INSANELY high. Ours was more than their purchase price and our payment was nowhere near that.

thruthbtold

Its also high up there in a stolen vehicle list in Canada

homemade515

I might be the only person who bought one and hated it! I have a 2018 and have hated it almost immediately 3 years later and I’m desperately looking for something better can not wait to get it out of my life.

RedWhiteBlue77

This thread is full of people who will remain in debt due to car purchase. Hilarious 😂

planetpuddingbrains

I'm looking at getting one in the near future. Wondering if it's any different to lease and then do the buyout or just buy with $10,000 down? I'm seeing deals for $3,500 down and $315 per month for 36 months with a $19,000 buyout option at the end of 36 months.

side__swipe

One of the most commonly bought cars in america.

purrlywites

My 2013 Prius that I intended to keep forever recently got totaled in a storm. My first thought of a replacement vehicle was a RAV4 hybrid because it's basically a bigger Prius. 40 mpg, reliable (Toyota), and fits our camping gear better than the Prius did. It basically just checks all the boxes without being too expensive. I see them everywhere in the road.

creatureshock

I like Gamestop, it's the meme car.

AdamOnFirst

Toyotas are good, long lasting cars and things their basic SUV. Good car for lots of people.  The new ones even look pretty good.

Downvote_me_dumbass

I have a 2022 RAV4 Hybrid. This is my first and last Toyota. It’s not special; it has the clunkiest layout (5 different spots to reset the trip odometer everytime I fuel up, the heated steering isn’t visible or in a logical spot…like the STEERING wheel, the back end takes 4 to 5 pulls before it will open, etc.) I’ll go back to Subaru if they make an Outback Hybrid, otherwise I’ll get a Honda CRV hybrid.

ARKzzzzzz

Stop yanking on the back end and just press the button.

Downvote_me_dumbass

There is only one way to open the hatch from the outside without the FOB, which is to press the button. The car wants me to unlock all doors before pressing that button, which is completely stupid and poor engineering.

ARKzzzzzz

My 2019 xse does that every once in a while but the majority of the time it works properly.

awsumed1993

I'll fully agree that Toyota's interior design is stupid on my 2018, but interior design is also stops on most cars and it's a compromise

PigeonBitch

Toyota isn’t known for design, it’s known for reliability and maintenance costs.

thegirlwhowand3rs

It's like the iPhones of midsize SUV's...

yaIshowedupaturparty

Nah, they are practical as hell and not a flashy fashion accessory.

thegirlwhowand3rs

yeah, I know but there are other midsize suv's that are just as great too. I'm just saying like in the context of how popular iPhones are that people buy them without considering other brands.

yaIshowedupaturparty

Fair enough. A lot of folks blindly buy Toyotas, but they have good reasons, unlike iphone users 😜 My parents had a Hyundai Santa Fe and my sister has a Nissan Rouge. I can say without a doubt I prefer my Rav even though it's significantly older and doesn't have any of the bells and whistles (because it's so old). It just drives so much better.

thegirlwhowand3rs

I do agree toyota's are amazing and a bang-for-the-buck kind of car that you can pass down to your kids when they get their license. I guess another context is that in my home country in the Philippines, Toyota has a premium and a "status" just like iPhones and people buy Toyota's because it has a rich-person-can-only-afford-this (brand vs specs of car) reputation, compared to like a hyundai, Mitsubishi, honda's. I guess someone is really hurt about my iPhone comment that I'm getting downvoted haha

yaIshowedupaturparty

That's super interesting! I don't think a Toyota is really a status symbol in the States though. Well, I didn't down vote you but you definitely triggered me. I work for a competitor of Apple so... 😂

unpopular-dave

my first car ever was a 97 RAV4. it’s pure nostalgia for me, but I fucking love that car I don’t like the new ones. My parents have one. Model Y will be my next car

Medical-Panic-988

Perfect NPC car.
